Chelsea’s pre-season tour of Asia has so far been relatively straightforward. Three games, three wins, no goals conceded and with every passing game, Andre Villas-Boas’ side are looking more threatening.

From a Fantasy perspective, however, matters are not quite so positive. Speaking at a press conference in Hong Kong, Andres Villas-Boas suggested that even his favoured formation, the 4-3-3, may possibly be open to change:

We have this idea of a 4-3-3 and we are focusing on it at the moment. It doesn’t mean we won’t go to other formations because you have to have this flexibility to challenge for the Premiership.

I think with the players’ experiences they are more able to do it. The 4-3-3 is a system for us in the end where it is not just a striker, it is three forwards in the end, and we have this flexibility in the squad.

It’s early days for Villas-Boas and with the club yet to make a significant move in the transfer market, it’s clear the new boss is weighing up every player currently in the Blues squad before turning his focus on replenishment.

What has been significant so far is the use of Yossi Benayoun- the Israeli made just 1 start and 6 sub appearances in an injury-blighted first season at Stamford Bridge but Villas-Boas has been utilising his talents as part of the Chelsea front three. Indeed, the player was singled out by the new boss, who suggested his inclusion offers the side more variety:

Yossi is a creative player coming from the channels to between the lines, so we have the flexibility to try different structures. We tried 4-4-2 in a diamond against Malaysia, 4-2-3-1 against Thailand in the second half, so we are getting bits and pieces with other formations, and we are pretty happy at the moment and not focusing a lot on the striking positions.

Starting at 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League -and classified as a midfielder- Benyoun could come into our thinking as an out-of-position player in the upcoming campaign if Villas-Boas decides to lean towards a definite starting XI next season. At present, though, this only increases the number of options available to Fantasy managers eyeing up Chelsea targets. Benayoun now seems likely to fight it out with Florent Malouda, Daniel Sturridge, Salomon Kalou and Nicolas Anelka for the two wide forward positions, as Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba continue to do battle for the lone central striker role.

The one real positive aspect here was the candid nature of the new manager- Villas-Boas seems quite happy to talk in length with regards to his thinking and Fantasy managers will be hoping his Friday press conferences mirror those of Carlo Ancelotti. The former Blues boss was the most “Fantasy friendly” manager of recent times, with his tendency to announce the Chelsea starting line-up a day or two in advance.

Given that last season’s runners-up have (WBA, NOR, SWA) in their first six games of the season, Fantasy managers will be hoping for more of the same clarity; with Chelsea likely to score big in those three games, second-guessing their players is a headache none of us need.

Starting to think 3 £12m players is too much, it's ruining my defence. Who should go?

    Lamps, Tevez or RVP?

      Toss a coin.

Or, IF Tevez does not leave, Lamps seems the riskiest option (Ironic that).

But tossing a coin might be your best bet. I'm leaning towards Tevez.

I hope he leaves, that would make this much easier. Can't see it though now, he'll be there until Jan I think.

      Not Rooney?

RVP... gets involved in every attack and Tevez is unsettled atm.

Lampard may play deeper this year.

I think Rooney is overpriced this year. Scored 5.1 ppg last season, 5.6 ppg in the 2nd half. Solid but not spectacular and not enough to justify £12m when I would not want to captain him until GW7 (v NOR).

RVP is best option at 12 mill unless Tevez stays

Lamps does get points but when you are checking Chelsea score each week to make sure your 12 mill investment is gaining you points and he gets 3 or 4 its very fustrating... not worth the tension imo

RVP scored 18 last yr with injuries and the team is more mature this year and should be better - or so wenger says

I'm having a similar problem, my history from 3 and 4 seasons ago is there but not for the previous 2. I emailed them asking why this was and they just replied 'make sure you're using the same account as last year'...helpful

That's my thinking too but he'll probably going to get the same points as many 8.0 midfielders.

Everton also barely got a penalty last season. More penalties should help him.

I think he offers good value. I expect Everton to keep more clean sheets this season and Baines will still get plenty of assists and a few goals too.

The players I mentioned are both at even prices, thats why I mentioned them because it wouldnt make you have to change the rest of your team.

              Moses & Etuhu both 5.0
              Albrighton & Sessegnon both 6.5

Moses seems to be a better choice than Etuhu for 5.0, atleast as far as the projections area goes. As a personal preference, I'd rather have Albrighton in my squad than Sessegnon, especially with Villa's starting fixtures but thats just me. Malouda isnt nailed on to start yet but I can understand having him anyways. The rest looks pretty decent.

Both are high in the projections area, I guess the main seperating factor is the 1.0 difference. If you dont need the 1.0 put it on N'Zog but if it was between you having Ferguson in your squad vs Moses, I would say go with Albrighton and upgrade Fergs to Moses or a scenario similar to that anyways.

            +1

With the way the prices are set up, they can only be so different.

Funny thing tho, I havent seen many RMTs with Hart in them or de Gea but they are the number 3 and 4 goalies choosen so far. I'd love to see how someone fits the rest of there team around such expensive goalies this year.

Hello chaps, first post but read the site for most of last season, hoping for another minileague win this year!

Anyway, I know its early but please rate my first draft...

    Given (Al-Habsi)

Heitinga (playing oop in midfield i hope?), A.Cole, Hughes, Kompany, Simpson

Modric (Bale same price tho?), NZog, Taarabt, Barton, Ferguson (4.0)

    RVP, Rooney, Rodallega

Im worried about not having Baines, he was great for me last season. Everyone seems so much more expensive this year too :S

    Cheers!

Downgrade RVP/Rooney to someone for around 10.0m, like Bent/Carroll/Suarez, and use the extra cash to upgrade Ferguson (who won't start), and change Modric to either Downing or Yaya as Spurs have tricky fixtures.

    How's this looking?

    Al-Habsi, Given
    Kompany, Hangeland, Simpson, Cahill, Enrique
    Lampard, Barton, O'Hara, Moses, N'Zogbia
    Van Persie, Carroll, Holt

I will swap Barton or O'Hara for Sinclair after GW1, and after GW2 I'll probably switch Carroll for Suarez.
Also, I will get rid of Enrique if he doesn't leave Newcastle.

    Thanks!

Anyone find fault in this current trend of thought.

    Given/Al Habsi (Nice fixtures)

    Kompany/Baines/Hughes/Simpson/Wilkinson (Good Fixtures/Reliable)

    Kuyt/Malouda/Jarvis/Barton/Moses

(Proven pts scorers, except Moses aka bench warmer. Malouda is a risk, hopefully that will be cleared up soon.)

Bent/Drogba/Holt (Good fixtures/Reliable. Drogba is an outside choice that could pay big dividends I reckon *if* he starts)

Cheers in advance to anyone who replies 🙂

stick with Baines. Why did you pick Rodallega out of interest? Yaya is a bit of a risk I reckon. Was great last year but I think City will struggle at the start due to Tevez/Balotelli and general lack of spirit in the team

Rodallega purely down to strong early fixtures. Will be shipped out after the good start, most likely.
