Manchester United completed their summer of big spending by wrapping up a one-year loan deal for AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao. News of the move broke early on Monday, but United fans had to wait patiently beyond the evening’s 11pm deadline until confirmation of the transfer was finally announced.

Upon his arrival, the Colombian immediately spoke of his excitement about the prospect of playing his football at Old Trafford over the course of this season:

“I am delighted to be joining Manchester United on loan this season. Manchester United is the biggest club in the world and is clearly determined to get back to the top. I am looking forward to working with Louis van Gaal and contributing to the team’s success at this very exciting period in the club’s history.”

United manager Louis Van Gaal, meanwhile, acknowledged how important Falcao’s goal scoring capability could prove for his side if they are to return to former glories:

“I am delighted Radamel has joined us on loan this season. He is one of the most prolific goalscorers in the game. His appearance-to-goal ratio speaks for itself and, when a player of this calibre becomes available, it is an opportunity not to be missed.”

The History

A product of the youth academy at Colombian second tier side Lanceros, Falcao was snapped up by River Plate of Argentina as a 15-year-old. Rising through the ranks, he made his first team debut in 2005 and, during the second half of his debut campaign, became a prominent member of the first-team, scoring seven goals in as many appearances.

Injuries curtailed the Colombian’s play for a number of seasons after that, until he rocketed on to the radars of a number of European clubs in 2008 after leading his side to the top of the Torneo Clausura. Falcao resisted a move away from Argentina until the summer of 2009, when Porto came calling, and his spell at the Portuguese club couldn’t have started much brighter. The front man scored a total of 34 goals in all competitions across 2009/10 and helped his side secure the Portuguese Cup with a decisive goal in the final.

In the following campaign, Falcao’s ascent to superstar status continued as his goals helped Porto win the Primeira Liga and Europa League and, after 72 goals and 18 assists in 82 appearances, he was subsequently sold to Atletico Madrid for a fee around €40million in the summer of 2011. Over his two seasons in Madrid, the forward netted 70 times in 90 appearances, which included five hat-tricks, and saw another Europa League title and Copa Del Rey added to his trophy cabinet.

However, Falcao was then sold to Ligue 1 side AS Monaco at the start of the 2013/14 season, where he tallied 13 goals in the first half of the campaign before a knee injury forced him on to the sidelines for the remainder of the season and this summer’s World Cup. Having returned to full fitness over the summer, he had already scored twice in three league appearances for Monaco this term before United acquired his services on deadline day.

On the international stage, Falcao made his senior international debut for Colombia in 2007, and has a total of 20 goals in 51 caps, including nine strikes in his side’s qualification for the 2014 World Cup, making him the top scoring player in Colombia’s qualifying campaign.

The Prospects

Concerns still remain over Falcao’s ability to last 90 minutes right now, but when the striker is fully fit Van Gaal faces a real struggle to find a place for Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie, Falcao, Di Angel Maria and Juan Mata in his starting XI – all the more so if he continues with his 3-4-1-2 formation. Van Persie has clearly recognised this and laid down a challenge to the new signing:

“I welcome his arrival, he makes us better. At a top club you should always go for the best, which also fits my philosophy. It is up to Falcao to fight for his place, as I have to as well. The two of us, plus Wayne Rooney and James Wilson, we must all fight it out to see who plays.”

The money splashed out on Di Maria would seem to assure his starting spot, whilst Van Gaal’s decision to name Wayne Rooney as club captain will give the Englishman’s 39% ownership optimism that his place is also secured. However, the common consensus right now is that Rooney will drop back to a deeper role to accommodate Falcao and Van Persie – who, it shouldn’t be forgotten, is a favourite of his former international manager – to form a dynamic duo up top. Could Mata, therefore, be the one to miss out? Or will Van Gaal figure out a way to fit all of his stars into one XI? Only time will tell.

Falcao’s ownership has already reached 3% in the FPL game and is set to rise considerably further as we reach next weekend’s deadline, but, with his role in Van Gaal’s side still unknown, the Colombian remains a gamble. Nonetheless, if he can replicate the spectacular form shown at both Porto and Atletico Madrid, the 11.0 priced forward could not only turn out to be a Fantasy sensation this season, but also prove the driving force behind United’s attempt to return to former glories.

With QPR visiting Manchester in eight days’ time, and encounters with Leicester and West Ham to follow, Falcao has been offered the ideal opportunity to introduce himself to the Old Trafford faithful and prove a ready-made differential for any managers willing to take the gamble from the off.

    Debuchy owners.. keeping? got avl and TOT in the next 4(though admittedly his fixtures are horrid) and then has a good run GW 8 onwards. i need to drop one of Terry/Debuchy to free up cash and not sure which one. leaning towards terry since he is so expensive, chelsea look leaky and he's not been much of an attacking threat(plus their fixtures are poor)

        Terry to 4.5 lets me upgrade both Eriksen and Jovetic over the next few weeks(probably Fabs and Balo).. while Debuchy allows just one of the two. i basically just wanna free up cash from my expensive non performing defense though

    Does anyone here follow Burnley/West brom or know how much WIsdom and Duff will play this season? Both have played all three starting matches and I am tempted to have them in my defense. The defense would look like this
    Ivanovic-Janmaat-Clyne-Wisdom-Duff with Ivanovic playing every match and Wisdom/Duff filling in for Janmaat/Clyne when they got tougher fixtures.

      Duff's place is under threat from Keane (new signing). Wisdom may lose his place when Gamboa is fit.

      Wisdom is an excellent player, by that virtue he may keep his place. There is significant doubt as the others say however. Moore and Hutton are the two safest, Duff I think will not lose his place unless he sustains an injury, which is possible given he's 35.

    Trying to decide on my captain:

    Falcao - Incredible goal-scoring record. Easy Fixture.
    - Never played in prem before. Will he need time to adjust?

    Costa - 4 goals in 3 games. Fixture proof.
    - Potential injury.

    Aguero - Potential explosive returns. Free of injury.
    - Tricky fixture. Could get injured

    Siggy - Involved in most of Swansea attacks. Set plays.
    - Tricky fixture.

    Sterling - Good form. Getting in lots of goal-scoring positions.
    - Playing a resiliant Villa team

    Looking at the pro's and con's, I think i'd put them in this order:

    Costa, Falcao, Aguero, Sterling, Siggy.

      Falcao (C) would be super risky, he might not even start this week. You can rule out Siggy from that list, and i wouldnt captain anyone away to a top 4 side so that rules out Kun. Costa or Sterling are your best bets.

    What are your opinions on Aguero? There might have been a hot topic here that anyone could link me to, but is he "essential" from now on and forward?
    I am currently planing on having a frontline of Costa-Aguero-Naismith where I pretty much would be forced to play Naismith every week due to having a week fifth mid, or the alternativ would be to play 4 atb. The thing that worries me is if Naismith loses his form or get dropped (He did only play 1419 and 1284 minutes the last two seasons and scoring 5 and 4 goals.), especially with the signing of Eto'o.

    Dropping Aguero would allow me to get two striker from two big teams that are pretty much guaranteed game time each week (Adebayor+Bony example)

    So what are your oppinions? Is Aguero worth having when one must play a cheaper striker or alternately a cheaper third mid (assuming everyone already have SIggy) every week.

        It will force me to drop Ivanovic to a 4.0 def and would leave me with Clyne-Colo-PvA-4-4 or it would leave me of a midfield with Fabregas-Sterling-Siggy-4,5-6 mil. None of those options looks tempting :/

              Begovic -> Krul = 0.5M
              Janmaat -> Wilson
              Heaton-> Elliot = 0.5M
              Ramsey-> Mirallas/Tadic 1.5M
              Ivan-> 4.5 = 2.5M

              Naismith to Balotelli.

              or

                Some decent suggestions, but I am not sure if it is worth having such a weak defense just to fit in a 8.5-10 mil striker.

                  Eto will steal gametime from Naismith and he will be benched as soon as he blanks.

                  Ade is 100% nailed and takes pens aswell.

                I'd keep Naismith people keep saying he will get dropped if he blanks one game but he keeps scoring his value keeps rising and right now for that price he's a bargain and not a gamble if Martinez rotates him as he's my 3rd striker. If it was jovetic/dzeko who were rotating it's more of a risk for their price and that's why I wouldn't have them.

      As a City fan I know Aguero is game proof if he is fit. I will transfer him in after the Arsenal game though because:
      A) his price may rise
      B) I'm unsure about his match fitness now (although he did well midweek) and Arsenal are usually tight at home so will watch the game and see

      Some might wait until after Chelsea but Aguero at the Etihad and fit is a must IMO

      As long as he continues scoring, Kun is worth owning. Should you need to free up funds, in a couple of weeks when CL starts, we will know who will most likely partner him between Jovetic & Dzeko up front. We should also know if Mario can be trusted, Falcao can/has adapted to the league and that Welbz is worth a punt for a couple of gameweeks.

      I do think, for his price, he remains a deferential of sorts in the sense that if you don't already own him, you looking at multiple FTs or hits to transfer him in should he go on a goal-scoring rampage. Not quite in the 'essential' column for me yet--but he's a couple of 'typical Aguero performances' away IMO.

      Eto'o will steal minutes from Naismith in the second half. I can't see a reason for Martinez to drop Naismith immediately when Lukaku returns, because his form as earned him a place in the starting XI. Naismith could be moved out on the flank with Lukaku up top.

      Keep Naismith for now, but save a transfer and/or money in the bank to upgrade him later.

      So far this season playing 4 at the back, and a cheap third striker hasn't been bad at all.

    A) still best if Costa is confirmed fit?

    A) Sanchez & Bony -> Sterling & Costa (4 points)
    B) Sanchez/Hazard & Bony -> Sterling & Balo (4 points)
    C) Ramsey/Sanchez -> Sterling
    D) Bony/Jovetic -> Ade
    E) Save

    Krul, Elliot
    Terry, Clyne, Chambers, Wisdom, Hutton
    Sanchez, Hazard, Ramsey, Siggy, Albrighton
    Rooney, Bony, Jovetic

            1) Doubling up on Stoke defence is a no-no. Don't be deluded by their clean sheet against City, two weeks ago Bego owners were looking to get rid of him.
            2) He's 5.5m, it's crazy to spend that much on a Stoke defender. Once again, don't be deluded by his goal against Hull.

      Good defence + fixtures can work. Last season you could easily get 18 points from 3 chelsea def. At the beginning of the season its so hard to predict who has a good defence, so wait till maybe Oct. and then start doubling up in def.

      I'm playing, haven't looked at my squad to consider final transfers yet though. Currently only have Jovetic in there from memory. I might stick with Jovetic/Dzeko as good options at that price - Aguero not worth bothering with in my opinion given his propensity for injuries. Possibly Silva/Nasri but I agree, it's hard to justify the outlay when you can pick up bargains elsewhere.

        Yeah, Jovetic is the one I have at the moment as well. But keeping him gives me 4 strikers playing Sunday...

      Why does it matter if your big players play on Sunday?

      ...and fixtures change every week with some playing Saturday and some playing Sunday/Monday anyway.

      1. QPR expects... glory!
        • 14 Years

        It matters because if you have four big money players playing regularly on Sunday (from teams with ECL and EL fixtures) amongst your strikers or likewise amongst your midfielders no matter how you do on Saturday with your cheapies you will always be leaving at least one on the bench.

        It's the equivalent of having five expensive mids in FPL and playing 3-4-3 or three expensive strikers and playing 3-5-2 😀

        With the active subs it's important to make sure you have good squad balance in terms of when players are playing. You wouldn't want 4 strikers playing on Sunday as you have to waste at least 1 of them (probably more if you've had someone perform well the day before)

    Thoughts on Balotelli now that Sturridge is injured?

      Didn't saw some Wolves player's head off with a chainsaw, got subbed off and gave the impression of... well, who knows what?

        They say the pitches of Melwood won't be green again for another few months.

      I'd get him if he was on penalties as well. With Sturridge fit I deemed Sterling to be sufficient Liverpool coverage, so I don't see why I need more now. Tempted by his mojo though.

      Straight into my wc team. Altough needs more games under his belt. Should have scored atleast 2 against Spurs.

        All depends how long Sturridge is out for. He did look dangerous vs Spurs.

      Bloody awful 😆

      Hughes benched him last week. But Odemwingie's injury might see him back in the side next week

        Grrr Stokes fixtures are sublime, I think Diouf as a 3rd striker might be the best option ...

          I had Diouf and transferred him after watching the Hull game. Unless they can improve the midfield he won't get many chances.

      I saw only the Hull game. That Stoke midfield is so limited, Arnautovic no better than the others.

    if sturridge is out I'm looking at either

    A. debuchy and sturridge > clyne and aguero -4

    B. debuchy and sturridge > ivanovic and balotelli -4

    which option do you like ?

      I'm on a WC but I'm mulling over the same. Ivan and Balo or Clyne and Aguero... very tough!!

        yeah a tough one indeed, but wanted ivan after gw 1 already but havent been able to get him really

      I prefer Clyne & Aguero, Ageuro is a 'never bench' doesn't matter who he plays, Balotelli - Not so much, however L'Pools fixtures are as good as they will be all season so may be worth a punt, but that's exactly what it is.

      Clyne and his fixtures are solid solid solid.

        yeah I trust aguero more than balo but ivan looks so threatining but clyne has good fixtures

          I worry about Chelsea and how they can rotate, especially when CL games start on the 17th, will Ivan be rested for the game w/ Swans 4 days earlier?

          Clyne doesn't have that issue and is a goal threat - NEW, SWA, QPR, SUN, STO, HULL, LEIC, AVL ... all in the next 9 games too.

            Reluctantly I have to defer to this logic. Ivan is just so shiny though!

    Now Studge and Costa are out shall I play the WC?

    I'd really like Falcao & Aguero.
