When it comes to midfielders, Arsene Wenger doesn’t have his troubles to seek. The Gunners boss, having seen his side’s pre-season preparation blighted by the continual speculation over the futures of skipper Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri, has confirmed Theo Walcott has flown home from the club’s training camp in Bonn due to an injury picked up in training.

Walcott sat out Monday’s training and boarded a flight home from Germany yesterday, ahead of this weekend’s Emirates Cup. The Arsenal boss, while not suggesting it’s a serious problem, did admit:

“Theo went home early and was due to have an MRI on Tuesday. It is an old ankle injury from the end of last season. It’s one that comes and goes.

“We need some more investigation because sometimes he’s completely free of it and sometimes it affects him. But we had to send him back because he couldn’t practice anymore.”

The news is a source of frustration for Fantasy managers- Walcott looks good for plenty starts on the right this season and coming in at 9.0 in Fantasy Premier League, may prove to be something of a bargain if one, or both, of Fabregas and Nasri follow the lead of Gael Clichy and depart for pastures new.

While new signing Gervinho could be an alternative in his possible absence, FPL have classified the former Lille man as a forward, and priced him at 9.0. Robin Van Persie is likely to be the front man of choice for the majority of Fantasy managers, however, leaving many to hope the likes of Nasri stays put, with the Frenchman surely a nailed-on starter for Wenger in the upcoming season.

Just after reading that article posted by Big Dunc earlier on AVB ( http://backpagefootball.com/premier-league/season-preview-chelsea-2/ )

Just wondering, if Modric/Moutinho were signed, where would they play? Would they play ahead of Ramires or Mikel on that diagram?

If you're right, Modric could be very high up the pitch and at 8m wouldnt be bad value at all. Considering he'd start most home games on about 3.

    RMT

Plan is to spend little in midfield where value seems to be at a premium and concentrating on cheap set piece takers for respective clubs. Hoping for some appreciation in value as weeks progress.

Also I have included Tevez provisionally due to fixtures but can easily change to either Rooney or RVP if he leaves.

    Thoughts/recommendations appreciated.

    Given (Ruddy)

Dunne – Cole – Clichy (Rafael – Simpson)

    Murphy – O’Hara – Barton – Yaya (Ferguson)

    Drogba – Tevez – Bent

    Given – Ruddy
    Cashley – Kompany – Hughes – Simpson – Orr
    Malouda – N’Zog – Albrighton – Taarabt – Moses
    RVP – Hernandez – Rodallega

I have been tempted by Wilshere for Taarabt, especially if Walcott looks injured to some extent. Any other thoughts on imporvements? I have 0.0 in the bank unfortunately, but could sub in Suarez for Hernandez and/or VDV for Malouda (in fact, am considering VDV instead of Malouda anyway) if fixtures or performances dictate, which would free up some cash.

I'm seeing very little value in the higher brackets of midfielder this year. Mid price options seem more likely as it stands. It means I'm spending money on my defence, much more so than in previous years.

    Until Sneijder comes of course.....

Not a bad idea. FPL Towers have cottoned on to the midfielders being the value players and this has caused the price hike. I normally look to ge a ratio of points:price for about 20:1 - so target a 10M player to get 200 points, that kiond of thing. Based on last year's points:this year's price it's a doddle for goalkeepers, about 10 or 11 of them achieved a 20:1 ratio. Defenders - also quite a few. Midfielders more difficult - nobody hit the 200 mark so none of those rated 10 Mil or above achieve it. Forwards - even slimmer pickings - only the mid-pricers of Odemwingie and Davies hit a 20:1 ratio. Going on that, GKs/Defence may be the best value - unless the new BP rules are going to tip the scales in the more forward players favour.

Might have done - but at 12M he'll need 240 to hit the 20:1 ratio. Possible? yes - but maybe not probable.

on a 38 game season last year i worked it out he would have hit 219 but that was allowing for him playing the full 90 every game, not far off

Good shout. And of course you do need the big hitters as captain options - theoretically, if all your players hit 20:1 then you're obviously better off if you captain the most expensive one. But the analysis still holds true - defenders look like they're going to be better value. Might be the year of the 532 formation.

pretty sure it is. from memory the side in 4th only has to win one tie to qualify for the proper tournament. seeing as the opponent isn't listed on the arsenal site it suggests the draw hasn't been made yet. it's a bit of scare-mongering but i have more doubts over RVP getting 90mins in gw1 now

    Hi,

Have a look for me please and say what you think.

    Ruddy/Given

    O'Shea/Hughes/Ivanovic/Dunne/Williams-Swansea
    Sessegon/N'Zogbia/Siva/Hoolahan/Sinclair
    Rooney/Torres/Holt

Still got 0.5 in the bank. I'm happy enough with my front 8. In the past I have not went with my gut feeling and regretted it, so I am keeping my front 8 as is.

Barring injuries, Given is in for whole season. Best shot-stopper in league IMO. O'shea is captain now so he should be nailed on. Could have Kompany or a Cahill + Jagielka. Could wait a couple of weeks to see what happens. Any input gratefully received.

Also, last season some people were good enough to give me some codes to join any leagues that were going for fun etc, if there are any again then that would be tremendous.

Oh and good luck to all for the coming season.

    Cheers

by the way Copenhagen 1 shamrock rovers 0... after seen rangers champions league match yesterday too, its a good job rangers not playing rovers because rovers would hammer them.
Rangers playing 3-5-2 who plays that any-more plays a 41 year old centre back madness http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/blog/2008/nov/19/argentina-napoli

This is why I was asking about the CL qualifiers above. 1-0 is a good result for Rovers, theyre not my preferred Irish team but Id support any Irish team in Europe.

Oh well tbh soup or man rovers should of scored at least one goal but they also should have conceded two penos but the ref did not call them. Rovers conceded early too stupid goal from corner.
Hopefully they wont conceded in tallaght cos copenhagen are a team there to be got.

I dont think i will tinker which this team too much until after charity shield.
    2.0m in bank
    Cech Ruddy
    Rafael Kompany Hughes Simpson Orr
    Malouda O'Hara Tarrabt Albrighton Dyer
    RVP Suarez Zamora

Had lampard, but keeping 2 mill in bank shall give me flexibility when Chelsea line up clearer. money could upgrade dyer or change suarez to bent. Thoughts on my choices?
