Sunderland’s striker crisis at the tail-end of last season look to put their top flight status under threat – ultimately however, it helped unearth a gem. Steve Bruce shifted Stephane Sessegnon from a peripheral role in the Black Cat’s squad to a central figure as a makeshift forward; the Benin international responded with 3 goals in the final 5 games to kill-off the relegation talk.

Fantasy Managers pushing for the final furlong were quickly alerted to Sessegnon’s merits as an “out-of-position” signing. Classified as a midfielder in the low-to-mid price bracket, he represented strong value for those willing to take a gamble on an inconsistent and often misfiring Sunderland side.

This season things could be different. Bruce has manoeuvred effectively in the transfer market to bring in established Premier League talent in defence and midfield – his attacking players should be in line to benefit.

Sessegnon is very much part of the masterplan. Bruce has made it clear that his form at the end of the season demonstrated the player’s ability as a striker, or at least in the role playing off a central striker.

“Sess has come back and he’s in good shape which gives us hope…We’ll look to keep him there [up front] because I always think that’s his best position. It suits Sess and it suits the team and I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen of him.”

It’s clear that Sessegnon will start the season in a striker’s role and 3 goals in pre-season has already offered a timely reminder of his talent. Classed as a Fantasy midfielder, the appeal is obvious and, despite a tough opening day encounter at Anfield, Sessegnon looks set to find himself in many initial Fantasy squads.

Key Factors

  • Sessegnon is classed as a mid-price midfielder across the Fantasy games (6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League) and yet proved extremely effective when playing in the striker role last season. Although a desperate measure on the part of Steve Bruce, he would have been impressed at the player’s ability to lead the attack and prove a menace to opposing defences. Three goals in five games also helped demonstrate his effectiveness as an out and out striker. Bruce has already stated that he will look to keep him in this position and Seessegnon has justified that faith in pre-season already with another run of goals.

  • New signings Ji Dong-Won and Conor Wickham may offer Asamoah Gyan competition up front but, while Gyan is a proven Premier League talent, the latter are young flourishing prospects, unproven at the top level. Sessegnon is being earmarked for the role playing off the striker in a slighter deeper, “in the hole” role. Should Bruce look to blood Wickham or Dong-Won, it would seem more likely that it will Gyan’s pitch time which takes the hit.

  • Sunderland’s opening spell of the season offers hope of early attacking returns. Home encounters with Newcastle, Stoke and West Brom should bring profit, whilst away trips to Swansea and Norwich also carry potential. All those games arrive in the opening seven Gameweeks.

  • Although Jordan Henderson has left the club, Bruce has arguably invested well in midfield areas. The arrival of David Vaughan should add stability and the odd spark, whilst Craig Gardner and Seb Larsson have the ability to contribute attacking verve and, in Larsson’s case, excellent delivery. Sunderland should produce more chances this season and Sessegnon may benefit.

  • Sessegnon could well depart for the African Cup of Nations in January, Benin seem unlikely to make progress through to the latter stages. They may well be eliminated at the group stage which would presumably see Sessegnon miss just a handful of Premier League outings.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

For me it's about starting with a team who are going to play every game so you can adjust slowly without point deductions and not lose any money on value drops. Finished the season with a team worth 110.3 mil and it really helped shape my team for the final few games with all that extra money.

if you were to pick a midfield player for fantasy league who would it be...
    Fletcher- too defensive
Giggs - getting old so may not get much game time
Park - only seems to play the big games
Anderson - not much game time
Young - wait and see how much he plays
Valencia - Was injured a lot of last season but seemed to get a good run of games at the end
Nani - seems the safest option but may get his position taken by young or valencia

Which one would you go for

I think the way mids are priced this year that to score well with them a reap the benefits of their productivity will be a challenge. I want strikers from Ars/ManU/Manc/Liv and maybe try and get Che & Tot coverag once I have built some value in my team... Yossi could get a start if he holds his position but Modric & VDV would be great dependent on transfers.

I'd say N'Zog. To me the appeal of him at Wigan was that he was the heart-beat of the team, and I doubt that'll be the case at Villa.

Sess showed some fine form at the end of last season, and has shown some more in pre-season so he's a good call. Sinclair and Taarabt are gambles, but I think they're gambles worth taking.

    Interesting fact:

Last season average points per game (based on number minutes played/90):

    A Cole = 3.52
    Ivanovic = 4.59

And that was Coles highest scoring season so far.

My point being, if you accept Cole and Ivanovic will regularly play, perhaps Ivanovic is the better option. 0.5 cheaper too.

definitely is imo. cole is a compromise, in that you're compromising attacking output for a sure starting place. let's face it ivanovic is an absolute menace in the opposition box, cole's occasional assist isn't quite so enticing

I don't think the 0.5 is worth it for the (undoubted) extra uncertainty. Plus last season may have been Cole's biggest points total but i doubt it was his best season in terms of points per minute. I thought he was very disappointing last season and am hoping for a bounce back season under AVB

Still scored 165 points. As long as he's healthy, like he is now, he'll be in my team. Much easier to start with him and then downgrade if an injury occurs.

Tis true, he is injury prone - just like Fabregas and all the other greats. I wish he wasn't but i am always concerned he will pull up with a hamstring issue at any time.

Yes but it's a common misconception on this website that when you say you don't fancy someone because of their fixtures, that you're ruling them out altogether. The fixtures will ease so I'm not ruling out the possibility of getting him eventually, I'm just figuring that most of his points will come in the softer fixtures.

I had him in for a very long time last year and long-term I will certainly look to have him in but for that opening spell I think he is dispensable.

      1. He scored 13 goals (plus 9 assists) last season - Spurs' 4 strikers scored 18 between them.

      2. He plays just behind the striker.

      3. He's a greedy bastard.

      4. He's on pens and most set pieces.

      5. Spurs' strikers are pretty poor, and the goals have to come from somewhere.

      6. He scored well in tricky fixtures last season (Arsenal being the most obvious example)

        That's more like it.

        1. Not saying he didn't but I'd be interested to see how many of those came against EVE mun MCY wol LIV.

        2. True

        3. Very True.

        4. Indisputable. This fact alone could sway me.

        5. Maybe.

        6. Ahhhh yes. I kept faith with him for ages and he finally came good for me in that match.

I think Defoe will do better this year, so long as Redknapp puts faith in him.

Hadn't really thought of him. How much is he this year?

If cheap he could be a good one to start the season with!

hmmm a dilemma. i get the impression dalglish is quite old-school and wont hesitate to rush him back but att he same time there are loads of fitness coaches around to help persuade him otherwise.
this part was interesting to consider:
Suarez had the benefit of a long spell on the sidelines around the turn of the year when he served a seven-match suspension in Holland for biting an opponent while still playing for Ajax.
That may work in his favour when it comes to recovering quickly from his Copa America exertions.
really annoying dilemma as his price is such a tease

    Thoughts people?

    Kenny (Given)
    Baines, Luiz, Kompany, Enrique, Simpson
    Lamps, Sess, Ohara, Taarabt, Nzog
    Bent, Zimzimmer, Holt

I know Luiz is a supposed risk but I think he will start.

Looking a lot better balanced than my team at the moment. I am torn between going for broke with my strikers and having a budget midfield or getting a bunch of set piece attacking mids and only having one particularly good striker,
