Our last glance back at the Gameweek gone by assesses the scintillating form of Man United’s record signing. We also doff our caps to Nigel Pearson’s Leicester after another stirring display and cast an eye over the current lack of resilience shown by last year’s more reliable defences.

The Player

His team may be toiling to pick up the points but there’s no denying Angel Di Maria’s class, or immediate impact on United’s Fantasy potential. A sublime chipped goal against Leicester on Sunday, allied with an assist in the 5-3 loss, took the Argentine’s tally to two strikes and a pair of assists in the last couple of Gameweeks as the bandwagon picks up pace.

While Juan Mata’s pitch time looks to have taken a dive, with Wayne Rooney dropping deep in the Spaniard’s absence, Fantasy managers have turned to Di Maria as a secure option in the Red Devils’ midfield. Now up to 9.8 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), with over 145,000 new owners already on board this week, he may be relatively pricey amongst fellow midfielders, but while Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao have yet to justify their hefty 12.4 and 11.0 outlays, the club’s record signing has quickly found his form in the Premier League.

For all their defensive troubles, Louis van Gaal’s side have still impressed in the final third since moving to a midfield diamond – netting seven times in two matches with the new system in place, compared to two goals in the first three Gameweeks with a 3-4-1-2 formation. Certainly, given that he didn’t net more than seven times in any league campaign for former club Real Madrid, it’s a little optimistic to assume the South American can be quite so prolific, but one look at his assist numbers during his four seasons in La Liga (16, 16, 12, 18) underline just what a talent United have on their hands.

While there’s a fear Rooney, Falcao and Van Persie may ultimately share goals and assists between them, Di Maria’s contribution from the centre of the park is already becoming increasingly difficult to overlook as the standout midfield option in Van Gaal’s new-look side.

The Team

The stunning comeback win against United was merely the latest in a series of displays which suggest the Championship winners are more than capable of holding their own at the top level. For all United’s defensive frailties, let’s not forget Nigel Pearson’s side had already picked up home points against Everton and Arsenal after coming from behind on both occasions and also emerged from the Britannia with all three points – a feat only three teams managed in 2013/14.

Undoubtedly, the Fantasy jewel in the crown is Leonardo Ulloa. The summer signing sits second in the overall FPL standings after five goals in as many matches, and at just 5.7, has already received over 192,000 transfers in – strikes against Everton, Arsenal, Stoke and United underline not only his suitability to the English top-flight but his fixture-proof potential, boosting our faith in him returning points in the allegedly difficult matches.

Bearing in mind Pearson only handed Danny Drinkwater, Esteban Cambiasso and James Vardy their first starts of the season on Sunday, Leicester will fancy their chances of retaining their mid-table berth as the campaign unfolds. Vardy’s speed on the break served up a stunning goal and four assists against United, though his appeal is dented by his classification as a forward, with Ulloa clearly the man in pole position for our consideration.

Drinkwater’s seven goals and five assists in 2013/14 may well bring him onto our radars as a budget midfield option, though, whilst three favourable home matches (BUR, SWA, SUN) in the next seven, allied with trips to Palace, Newcastle and West Brom, could see some turn to Kasper Schmeichel and Liam Moore as cut-price defensive options if Pearson can instil a little more resilience to his never-say-die side.

The Talking Point

United’s King Power capitulation was just one of a number of instances in which the premium priced defences were breached yet again. While the Red Devils shipped five, Merseyside pair Everton and Liverpool leaked three apiece to Palace and West Ham – teams hardly renowned for their cutting edge in the final third. With Chelsea, City and Spurs also conceding, it meant Arsenal were the one side to justify their lofty defensive price tags, as the majority of top-flight back-lines continue to show little sign of tightening up.

A look back at the four most resilient sides from 2013/14 highlights just how quickly fortunes have changed – Chelsea, Arsenal, City and Everton have managed only one clean sheet apiece, while the likes of West Ham, Palace and Sunderland, all solid sides last time around, have yet to replicate the resilience that served us so well previously.

The lack of stability at the back is compounded by the home/away distribution of clean sheets thus far – 17 of the 29 shut-outs in the first five Gameweeks have been registered by teams on their travels. Indeed, after five rounds of fixtures, only three teams – Burnley, Villa and Southampton – have managed more than two clean sheets, with a trio apiece.

In the midst of all this, Leighton Baines has picked the perfect time to remind us of his value as a Fantasy asset. The Everton left-back – who justified his position at the top of last week’s RMT rankings – converted a spot-kick in Sunday’s 3-2 home defeat to Palace to take his tally to a goal, two assists and six bonus points in the last three Gameweeks as he soars up the standings.

While there’s an argument against investing heavily at the back, with many believing budget defenders are the way to go, Baines, like Chelsea’s Branislav Ivanovic, continues to show that in certain cases you get what you pay for. At a time when top-flight back-lines are particularly porous and frustrating Fantasy managers, their consistency is proving to be invaluable.

    Baines or not Baines ?

    Forster / Schmeichell or Heaton

    Duff, Chambers, XXX, XXX, XXX

    A) Baines , Azpilicueta, Moore

    B) Baines, Lovren, Wilson

    C) Jagielka, Lovren, Azpilicueta (No Baines but looks more balanced and more possible clean sheet combo)

    Thanks

Not risky at all at the minute. And they have great fixtures. With solid 4/5 options too you could easily bench him for the odd gameweek. Whats more risky - expecting one decent team to get a clean sheet, or two average teams to get a clean sheet each?

I hate A); for any extra points the others will get Moore will lose you.

I don't mind B) as it looks great *on paper*.

      C) is OK but lacks any offensive punch.

      As a result, I'd go with B).

Don't be so quick to dismiss Liverpool as they've only conceded 9 shots per game this year. To put this in perspective, the *clean sheet darlings* Burnley have given up 11.5...

And further to this, Stoke are middle of the road in this regard too as they've held their opponents to12 shots a game.

Overall, goals conceded is a very misleading stat in the short-term.

On a wildcard? I would go Baines, Clyne, Wisdom (or any other 4.0).

Chambers / Clyne / Baines = an almost fixture proof back line.

          You can play 4-4-2

Ivan - Lovren - Clyne - Pieters (good clean sheet prospects + attacking returns from all except Lovren)

ADM - Sterling - Siggy - Fab (looks pretty solid)

Roo - Costa (too early to ship out rooney)

You will be benching Chambers even if you bring him in, so no point in doing it this week.

Next week get rid of Ivan, and Naismith, and get in Pelle (who should be a consistent points scorer) and Chambers. You can also look at Welbeck from GW8 onwards.

Which 1 of these 3 would you bench this week?

    A) Chambers (TOT) - expect this to be the favourite, but Spurs have looked rubbish of late and scored a total of 0 goals against us over 3 games last year.

    B) Wisdom (BUR) - good fixture especially with Burnley struggling in front of goal. Still, it's only West Brom

    C) Siggy (sun) - no attacking points in 2 weeks and up against a SUN team who just kept a shut-out

all true, but Chambers is 1.5 less than any other Arsenal defender (not including Sir Chesney) and should be nailed until the wc window. Perhaps worth the lack of attacking threat for the 1.5 saving

          Jutkiewicz and Sodell up front

Burnley have failed to score in any competition since Scott Arfield's 14th-minute strike against Chelsea on the opening weekend.
Since then they have drawn a blank in league matches against Swansea, Manchester United, Crystal Palace and now Sunderland, and were also shut out in the League Cup loss against Sheffield Wednesday.

    Please RMT:

    Krul / Foster
    Clyne / PvA / Naylor / Colo / Wilson
    Siggy / Sterling / Fabs / Zaha / King
    Aguero / Costa (c) / Falcao

    – 2FT
    – ITB 0.4
    – Wildcard played

I am thinking either one of the following:
    A) Zaha OUT - Moses / Downing or Schneiderlin IN
    B) Zaha/Falcao/Coloccini OUT - ADM/Welbeck/Duff IN
    C) Zaha/Aguero OUT - ADM/Pelle IN

No idea what to do with this team.
Zaha needs to go. Do Zaha -> someone and save 1 transfer.
Then you'll have 1 more week to monitor Falcao and Aguero.

I am personally giving Zaha this GW to get points before I move him but I'm tempted to get ADM for a hit this week. I would either do B or keep free transfer for next GW.

    B) Rooney, Marney -> Ulloa, ADM (-4) (gives me a benching dilemma Ulloa vs Siggy)

Yeah A seems reasonable and Rooney > Aguero next week probably, don't think it warrants the hit in C though.

Thing is that with front trio of Welbeck, Costa and Rooney, I can only see dropping Rooney.

    Overall Rank Question:

When you decide to take a hit(s) to pick your team, when is this calculated into your gameweek score?

    For example =

Monday, I trade in Di Maria and Rooney for Ramsey and Naismith for -4 points. Is the -4 points then immediately reflected in your GW score and OR after the first update happens after the Saturday games? Or is it only adjusted after all games have played?

We all lament our captain fails and our misfires on attackers we think are due, but isn't John Terry the biggest disappointment in FPL considering the expense, the perception of security, and the unbelievably bad returns of 10 pts from 5 matches? I have never been so sure of a team selection that I have gotten so wrong.

            Zabaleta

One of my least favourite FPL players. No idea why, guess i just think his threat is exaggerated, and much of his appeal has been lost as his major advantage was his total nailed-on-ness, which has now vanished with Sagna,

Kolarov was always the most attacking City defender, but him being nailed would just be cheating

Watching the match at the weekend the City mids were looking for him on the overlap all game long...I agree about him not being nailed on and so becomes an iffy pick but I was just saying it's easy to understand why so many outside of this site picked him.

I don't normally ask for advice because I don't normally need it and I see it as a weakness.

Anyway, I need advice. I have 2 FT and no money. I have the option to do Aguero, Ramsey and Zaha to Fabregas, Di Maria and Wellbeck for -4 I am guessing Fab might rise tonight which will leave my plans in tatters.
I think I got Aguero in way too early as he is not back to fitness. Anyway thats what my City buddy tells me.

I will wait till tonights games to see if any injuries but like I say if I wait another night i will be .1 short.

I am on 74,000 rank with sterling, rooney, costa in team also.

*resists wisecrack about Yer Dad being weak*

I think it might be a bit too early for Welbeck and I also think Kun will do well against Hull. But you might get similar returns from Pelle in the short term. Zaha obviously has to go.

But the hit seems to boil down to Ramsey > Fab (-4) which seems excessively expensive. Can you keep Ramsey and just do Kun > Pelle/Welbeck & Zaha > ADM for free?

I prefer what you have already, excepting Zaha. Ramsey could score big in the NLD and Aguero isn't injured, it's a ruse. Zaha -> Diame? Looks mad I know but read the bit in the last article about him, he's playing more attacking and looks a decent prospect now. Thinking of shipping Siggy for him if he doesn't rediscover his form soon.

I would think it's impossible to be involved enough in fantasy to be on this site and have a rank over 3 million. Not that ranks matter that much I feel. Mark the creator of the site had a shocking year last year.

Am i mad to play WC this week?

    Present Team:

    Begovic

    Moreno | Clyne | O'Shea | Colocini | Hutton

    Siggy | Tadic | ADM | Cesc | Sterling

    Rooney | Costa | Naismith

    Already used FT

Yes, you'd be mad. Killer midfield. Just play the best defence you can think of this week, then downgrade Naismith and upgrade the defence.

mannone, foster, krul or schmeichal..? for at least the next 10 weeks, rotating with heaton.

who is the best bet..? both fixture and clean sheet wise.

Mannone by a country mile. weeks 8-10 will just be save points though with no CS I'd imagine.

At his price, I would keep. Unless you have really pressing matters or good reasons.

        Thinking of downgrading Rooney with him and going with;

        Silva // Fab // ADM // Sterling

Then you might have an argument there, but with Siggy's potential I would probably keep him, depends on the attack line you want to play as well.

2 good weeks out of 5 isn't that great especially seeing as one of those teams they played was Newcastle. Worth monitoring at that price all the same.

I'm off Ramsey for now. If Wenger plays Ozil in same position again Ramsey may not be so prolific this season. Silva for same price?

Silva normally scores consistently well, I'd expect that to continue but City just don't seem very free scoring at the moment (cue 7-0 thrashing of Hull at the weekend).

It was such a craze back then. This system would have caused a mass revolt in those days 😆

I guess the new way of RMTing is to ask for +1s if you think the team is good.

Costa (C) this week? +1 if you think yes

This can go on and on....

Does anyone get annoyed at the constant United talk? I don't dislike them and I support West Ham so they are not my rivals but it seems they get talked about so much on this site.

Suppose they are the biggest team in the country and have the most fans but I would love to read about Clynes potential at Southampton or if Cisse can refind his form from a season or two ago yet all I see is Evans this, ADM that etc. So boring!

Anyone with me or am I being a mardy ass?

There's plenty of that on here, some of Lucy's posts on Southampton are amongst the best you'll find on here atm. I guess people just want to talk about it

Cheers JK. Not having a pop at the site. Newspapers are the worst. I suppose smaller clubs will never get the same amount of exposure than the bigger clubs but what with Uniteds form I dont really see them as very relative in a fantasy point of view

Big club who make news week in week out as they fall apart and/or try to improve...I'm sure if the same thing happened to City it would be gossip worthy..or Chelsea..

I agree. Tell me more about West Ham. What formation are they playing exactly? I thought they were playing Downing as a false 9 but the Guardian said he was playing in the hole behind a front two.

      1. rozzo
        • 12 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

Well the formation is apparently a 433 with Downing on the left of a front three but without the ball it tends to go to a 451 with Downing in a central area and Valencia more out wide.

I have never been a big fan of Downing to be fair but he has started this season very well, as has a few of the players. I wouldnt expect to get returns out of him week after week though.

More people support the bigger teams so it's only natural. We do have a few experts on other teams popping about like Southampton, Leciester and co. And they make very interesting reads at times.

The problem the bigger teams bring are A) fanboys talking crap B) so much in the media and watching the big games means most of us probably know enough about them already to make an informed opinion C) Muppet Rage United advocating Blackett 😀
