Dusan Tadic and Nathaniel Clyne both find the net as Southampton send Arsenal tumbling out of the Capital One Cup. Alexis Sanchez’ goal scoring form continues for the Gunners, Swansea pair Gylfi Sigurdsson and Nathan Dyer notch for Swansea again, while Liverpool and Everton turn in worrying displays ahead of the weekend Merseyside derby.

Saints Stun the Emirates

Dusan Tadic and Nathaniel Clyne were both on the scoresheet as Southampton overcame an early deficit to defeat Arsenal 2-1 in their Capital One Cup third-round tie yesterday evening. Ronald Koeman made just five changes from the side that narrowly defeated Swansea at the weekend, with Victor Wanyama handed a starting role after his winning Liberty strike, and Saido Mane offered his first start since his summer move to St Mary’s.

The Scout Says: Koeman’s men are going from strength to strength right now, and Fantasy interest shows no signing of waning. Whilst Graziano Pelle is the attacking asset of choice, last night’s victory taught us that Tadic is on penalties for the Saints, and offered us a first glimpse of Mane’s potential – the Senegal international earned the spot-kick that Tadic subsequently slotted home, and put in a performance that gave plenty of indication of the verve and flair he could bring to the league. Meanwhile, at the back, Ryan Bertrand’s owners will have been glad to see the left-back make just a five-minute appearance from the bench last night, whilst fellow defender Clyne’s strike was his second of the season in all competitions – although his price has now reached 5.3, the full-back still looks incredible value as the Saints face four home encounters (QPR, SUN, STO, LEI) in the next six.

Sanchez Strikes Again for Gunners

Alexis Sanchez marked his recall to Arsene Wenger’s first-team with the Gunners’ only goal in their loss to the Saints. Jack Wilshere also earned a recall, whilst Calum Chambers completed another 90 minutes at right-back for his new club.

The Scout Says: The Chilean was an unused substitute in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at the weekend, and with the much-maligned Mesut Ozil impressing in that encounter, Sanchez’s owners may have feared that another sub role could be on the cards for this weekend’s north London derby. Last night’s superbly taken free-kick should bring the summer signing back into the reckoning for a starting berth on Sunday, however, and with three goals in his last four appearances in all competitions, and three home fixtures to come in the Gunners’ next five in the league, the in-form Sanchez is making a strong case to be considered as our Arsenal midfielder of choice right now, in spite of his lofty 10.4 price tag.

SIGURDSSON AND DYER ON TARGET FOR SWANS

Both Gylfi Sigurdsson and Nathan Dyer once again showed their goal scoring prowess as Swansea swept aside Everton 3-0 in their Capital One Cup tie. The two midfielders scored either side of half-time before substitute Marvin Emnes added a late third, whilst Jonjo Shelvey picked up his fourth booking of the season, making the former Liverpool man just one more caution short of a one-match ban.

The Scout Says: Though many have written off Dyer’s prospects due to the impressive early-season form of Sigurdsson, and a lack of faith in doubling up on Swansea’s midfield assets, it appears that the two midfielders are going to go toe-to-toe for our investment as the season unfolds. Whilst the latter has played every minute of league football this season, and has the majority of set piece duties in his locker, Dyer is 0.9 cheaper than the Icelandic international and has an ownership level almost 30% less than his team-mate – with four goals to his name now in all competitions, he is certainly emerging as one to watch and could well eclipse Sigurdsson in our estimations as the weeks progress.

EVERTON’S DEFENSIVE FRAILTIES CONTINUE

Roberto Martinez fielded a very different looking backline to the one we have seen in the league this season but despite a total of eight alterations to the XI, the Toffees’ poor defensive form continued with a 3-0 loss at the Liberty.

The Scout Says: Three goals conceded was on a par with their loss to Crystal Palace at the weekend, and with trips to Liverpool and Man United on the horizon for the Toffees, faith in Everton’s rearguard will surely continue to rely on their attacking potential. The main positive for Fantasy managers is that yesterday’s loss does lighten the schedule for Martinez’s men, which could subsequently mean less rotation – owners of Kevin Mirallas and Steven Naismith were left disappointed as the in-form pair were rested at the weekend, and will now be happier to see the fixture list begin to ease a little for the Toffees.

LIVERPOOL EDGE PAST BORO

It took a 30-penalty shoot-out for Liverpool to finally progress past Middlesbrough in their League Cup tie yesterday. Brendan Rodgers made eight changes to his starting XI at the weekend – Raheem Sterling was one of the few to maintain his starting role and played the full 120 minutes, though was the only Reds player to miss in the shoot-out. Debutant Jordan Rossiter grabbed the opening goal, with fellow youngster Suso notching the home side’s second in extra time, before Kolo Toure conceded the penalty that saw Boro make it 2-2 and force the match into a shoot-out.

The Scout Says: Rodgers has already warned us that he won’t risk Sterling burning out in the first half of the season, and with the young winger completing the full 120 minutes last night, his 47.5% ownership will now be anxiously awaiting the teamsheet for Saturday afternoon’s Merseyside derby. However, having lost their last two league fixtures, Rodgers is hardly in a position to be too forward-thinking with his team selection against the Toffees – a win is vital if the Reds are serious about their title-winning ambitions this season, and with his side turning in another unconvincing display, the Reds boss will surely send out a full-strength side come the weekend. With home encounters against West Brom and Hull City either side of a trip to struggling QPR to follow, Sterling’s place atop our Watchlist is still assured, though he will have to perform considerably better than last night if he is to maintain that position.

MUNIESA THE HERO FOR STOKE

Left-back Marc Muniesa bagged an unlikely brace as Stoke overcame Sunderland 2-1 in their Capital One Cup clash at the Stadium of Light last night. Black Cats striker Jozy Altidore notched his first goal in 30 appearances to put his side ahead, before Muniesa – in his first start of the season – drove in two powerful strikes to send the Potters through to the next round of the competition.

The Scout Says: Muniesa’s match-winning performance could see the ex-Barcelona defender challenge Erik Pieters for his starting berth when Stoke host Newcastle on Monday night, and with a price tag of just 4.4, could prove a great budget alternative to Marc Wilson in the Potters’ back-line if he can oust the Dutchman from the XI. With a kind run of fixtures in the next five Gameweeks for Mark Hughes’ side (NEW, sun, SWA, sou, WHM), many will be eyeing up their defensive assets, though with Muniesa now set to scrap for a full-back role, Ryan Shawcross remains the safest option for those willing to spend that little bit extra.

with many european and cup fixtures rotation and last minute injuries (like sanchez this week) it is a must imo to have more than just a bench player. i would bench ulloa most of the times unless he continues to score

Get rid of Ramsey (you have Welbeck) and bank the extra so you can get on the next striker / midfield bandwagon.

      Ramsey > Downing

So I understand that rules re price rises have been changed. I agree with wild card transfers not counting t price rises, and understand the belief that large forums such as this one were effectively manipulating 0.2 rises and then jumping off them during a wild card which was effectively a loophole being manipulated. However this current threshold for price rises is daft.

The fact that prices seem to drop very easily for not holding the band wagon player and the fact that the band wagon player does not rise means that the template team has arrived after game week 3. It just feels to me that the game has further encourage templates. Can't say I'm particularly enjoying this season just feels like a captain punt and a couple of defenders differential most weeks. Am actually considering just logging in once a week on a sat morning and doing a transfer rather than enjoying/obsessing the game

I firmly believe that it's the lack of alternatives to decent scorers that dictate a template, not the pricing system.

Exactly. Prices are more stable which discourages a template team as diversity is less financially risky. It's the points which are driving the template.

Plus a 'template' is always formed EVERY season. And every season people whinge about it and complain that the game is no fun as a result.

The cycle of template whinging on here is quite amusing.

            – whine about how all teams are the same
            – someone puts up a RMT with players not from the template
            – said whingers recommend transfers that bring it towards the template
            – rinse and repeat

And despite the fact it's been going on for years people always treat it as something new and blame it on something specific to that season.

whats the template though, theres at least 7 forwards who are all good picks and plenty mids too, whatever the price rise system is people are always gonna go with players that did well the previous game, its how ff works

I think this season, at least thus far, presents one of the most open in recent seasons in terms of the potential alternatives available. No shortage of defenders, mids and forwards that can potentially score well.

I am not even looking at team value since there are a lot of viable budget and mid-price options if you can't afford the big guns.

I agree about the template being worse than ever, though I don't think it's been the price rises that have done it - it's just about who has scored and who hasn't. Those who scored well in the first couple of weeks have continued to do so.

I also disagree that FPL have changed the pricing system because of active collusion on wildcards. The number of people on this forum who have a wildcard active at the same time is just too small to be able to have any significant impact. Last season, a player needed 120,000 transfers for a 0.2 rise. Collusion simply couldn't happen on that scale here.

I do think they've changed the pricing system to try to keep people playing for longer. They wanted to fox the veterans and stop them effectively winning their mini-leagues by Christmas. That situation is what causes so many 'less obsessed players' to give up early. Removing the advantage of playing the market using FISO etc is one way of levelling the playing field.

    Post fail! Will try again:

WC'ed last week and threw together a Monday evening draft, then got tied up for the remainder of the week and missed the deadline!!

    Heaton (Hamer)
    Bertrand, Ntaylor, *Dier (Duff, Hutton)
    Fab, Ramsey, ADM, Sterling, Sig
    Costa, Rooney (Naismith)

*used this weeks FT to bring in Chambers for Dier and free up 0.9M

How is this 3 week plan:

Week 7: Rid of the Pig for Welbeck or Pelle

Week 8: With the free cash upgrade Ntaylor for Baines (budget willing)
or upgrade Naismith for a solid backup should Costa lose game-time due to rest.

Week 9: If no pressing matters elsewhere (yeah sure!!) try and fix keeper issue.

Upgrade the defence is something I've thought about and discussed it earlier on the site as well. Basically I've decided that there isn't a clear cut way to upgrade it except get in either Baines or Ivanovic which I don't want to do. Clyne - Chambers - XXX will do well for now I reckon. Plus I want my #1 bench player playing 90 minutes as regularly as possible, except for possibly Henderson, Schneiderlin is the preferred option.

You'll need Haz and Costa in the end. Haz will spank Fab...eventually. But Fab will be decent re points total. I prefer Haz and he's not going anywhere. All three is overkill though

They all look decent option individually so why not? The only downer is that many premiums from one team reduces your captaincy options next time they have a bad fixture so look ahead and make sure your other premiums cover such fixtures. Wait for their defence to tighten up before you worry about covering it

Already went ahead and did Mata to Hazard so now have all 3. Feel comfortable with my decision. Now whether to WC or not this week. Think I'll hold off for now to see how Rooney performs at the weekend. Defence needs some serious adjustments too - that Krul/Colocini double up has failed big time!

What are your guys thoughts on doing DDG to Forster for a hit? Before you call me crazy just think about it. The likelihood is, DDG will get 1-2 points and Forster will get 6-7 points. It won't only pay off but it will also mean I don't have to waste a free transfer in the future getting rid of him! 😯

I don't see a major difference between taking a hit between a keeper and defender. The chances of an attacking defender scoring against a weaker team is still very low..

or he might get 100 saves.

          or save a pen.

or perhaps Joey Barton might get a 50 yard screamer and ruin Forsters clean sheet.

I have the same dilemma. Have decided to hold out till next GW to change DeGea out.
Forster more likely to get a clean sheet this week but you are only going to gain approx 3 extra pts because of your -4. DeGea COULD get a CS... I don't think its worth it this week, Id hold for next...

I listened to the 'no points hits for a keeper' rule last season and decided against Begovic to Mannone for about 10 weeks towards the end of the season. The points difference was about 40.
Man U look like hardly getting any cleansheets, Southampton look like getting quite a few.

🙄 Vardy's been out injured and that was his first game at full fitness.. one of our best players last season and looked as good as he did vs Manu against most teams last season. Wont score 21 points a week obviously but dont write him off so easily without having seen him play before. good sub 5.0 option for anyone looking for one. did a write up on him earlier but cant be bothered to search for it now

🙂 .. i cant do without Jamie. had him at the start and swapped him out cause of his injury but he is straight back in now. 5 million seemed to good to pass up at the start of the season and still is for me.. considerin i like playing with a cheap 8th attacker that is

Basically.. Ulloa has no one to replace him uptop considerin what he offers. and his position will stay the same no matter what.
Vardy can play as a winger/uptop with Ulloa. but that means Nigel has good replacements IF his form drops. It's his position in the team to lose usually though.

the definition of fpl nailed and real life nailed varies. The risk with Vardy is if he goes through a bad run of form for a few games he could be dropped. however if ulloa goes through a bad run of form fpl managers will drop him anyway.

Right... Ordering my Saints shirt for the season. I wasn't going to because they're still refusing to produce ladies shirts (that's more important than men seem to realise) but I didn't buy one last year (enraged about the lack of stripes) and my away shirt from the season before is in a bit of a state.

Ginola was an absolute delight for a while but turned a bit stroppy and didn't quite have the ability to graft when things weren't working out for him.

Remember seeing one of his first games for us against Middlesbrough - he absolutely tortured them for 90 minutes but put the fans through the wringer too as a result: still recall him performing successive (unnecessary) Cruyff turns by his own corner flag before casually flicking the ball to John Beresford who smashed it as far downfield as he could and gave Ginola a bewildered look. It was maybe his third game and nobody had quite got to grips with him at that point.

He will probably play Mané and may think that Mané's attacking flair needs to be balanced by a more defensive midfielder. That would play in Wanyama's favour.

At some point he'll be essential.. Right now I'm not sure. Beginning to wonder if I bought him a bit early, considering all the cheap alternatives (Pelle/Welbz/Ulloa etc) bringing in the points. Looking at City's fixtures I'm hoping he'll explode this week and keep it up

I'm on WC this week and he's the player I've had in all week but now doubting. Plus side of not having him is that other cheaper strikers are in form. Downside is if he starts banging them in the next couple, will be very difficult to get him. If city had 6 home games in next 9 it would be a no brainer, but fact it's the other way around has me doubting.

    Green

It's not chasing points at all. They are an in form team with excellent fixtures (exception being spurs away of course, which with spurs current form I consider an average fixture). If any anything returns in the last fixture weren't great.

Secondly I've had Clyne and Tadic from day one so it is a simple transfer for Pelle. Not making any drastic changes for this one upcoming fixture.

Is it wrong to have 6.8m in the bank and be happy with your team?

    Forster/ 4m
    Bertrand/ Chambers/ Naylor/ Duff/ Moore
    ADM/ Sterling/ Fabregas/ Siggy/ Boyd
    Costa/ Pelle/ Ulloa

I'm so undecided on Aguero, think Ulloa may actually be more essential than him so I'm planning my WC team with a phat wedge to bring in Aguero if I'm wrong.

    Costa rose last night???

I've had a think about it and with all the Mourinho talk of saying that Costa wasn't fully fit last weekend, I wonder whether he will start/play more than 60 against Villa this weekend?

Chelsea have got what has become a very important fixture against Sporting in midweek, and then a big game against Arsenal the following weekend.......I personally believe that there's a strong chance Fab/Costa won't feature as heavily as previous this weekend and I'm tempted to bench Costa.

    Thoughts?

Do we all actively search our the hot topics? If yes, What draws you to certain discussions? If no, what prevents you from reading them?

Is it just me that thinks the titles are usually incredibly dull.

I'll usually try to make sure the name is functional first and foremost so people know what the topic is about and if I can add some humour/cleverness that's a bonus. I'm proper dullard.

For instance I considered Aguero: Closer Each Day as an oblique Australian soap opera reference but that seemed like a self indulgent (and very bad) joke at the expense of clarity.
