Man City hammer Inter as David Silva pulls the strings. Alan Pardew’s unhappy. Wesley Sneijder fails to write off a move away from Inter and Daniel Sturridge wants to stay at the Bridge thanks to a new-found freedom. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Bolton have been linked with a move for Shaun Wright-Phillips following the sickening leg-break injury to Chung Yong-Lee. The Man City star would fit seamlessly into Owen Coyle’s starting XI, though his wages may prove to be a stumbling block. The Trotters’ new signing Chris Eagles can play on the right flank and comes in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), though Coyle has been playing Eagles as a support striker in recent games, meaning a possible right wing role for Gretar Steinsson or Tyron Mears if Coyle fails to bring in re-inforcements. With both listed as 4.5 defenders, it’s a situation worth monitoring.

Staying on the subject of Bolton, Coyle has also been linked with another loan move for Daniel Sturridge as he looks to shuffle his pack. Citing his great relationship with Andre Villas-Boas, Coyle then proceeded to lavish praise on Sturridge, with his admiration for the player very much apparent:

Daniel is such an outstanding young talent but I think he has to play week in, week out now. He’s had six months of being a regular starter with us and he will probably know he’s got to start these games now. I played him through the middle and he was sensational for me. I always felt he wanted to play through the middle…

If Sturridge‘s latest comments are anything to go by, however, Coyle’s pursuit of the player may prove to be a fruitless one. Sturridge seems a happy man under Villas-Boas and in light of the club’s sixth straight pre-season win, has been talking of a new-found freedom to his play:

The manager has given me the licence to express myself and I don’t think I have had that before with any manager. He has let me off the leash and said go out and enjoy yourself. I have a lot more freedom than I have ever had and I think I enjoy my football more..

It is not just me either; everyone feels like that. He wants us to attack and not be too defensive. That is refreshing. The tour has been great. The manager has shown faith in me.

Fantasy managers will be crossing their fingers and hoping Sturridge does depart Stamford Bridge, though; at 6.5 in FPL his performances for Bolton last season suggest he’ll be a real bargain. If he stays at Chelsea, squad rotation looks likely to kill off his Fantasy potential.

Javier Hernandez’s Gold Cup exploits for Mexico and the subsequent rest period was always going to mean the striker had some catching up to do in terms of match fitness. With the striker now sidelined with concussion, his pre-season training schedule has been further disrupted and Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted the player may not be available until the end of August, meaning there’s a chance Hernandez may not see any Premier League game time until game week 4, in mid September:

Javier was always going to get a break until he did his proper pre-season. In a two-week period now he’ll do some training but he won’t play. We’ll have him back in three to four weeks.

Arsenal suffered a scare in yesterday’s draw with New York Red Bulls when Jack Wilshere was withdrawn after only seven minutes with an ankle knock. With Abou Diaby already sidelined for ten weeks and Cesc Fabregas looking likely to exit the Emirates, the last thing Arsene Wenger needs is more injuries to central midfielders. The Gunners boss seemed positive on Wilshere after the match, saying:

It is not very serious. They say he might be out for the whole of next week because he has an ankle inflammation. But he has not torn anything. He is a quick healer usually and a tough boy so I hope he will be quicker than the medical predictions.

The England game is on August 10 and I don’t know [whether he will be available]. They told me he might be out next week. If he is out next week, he will not play against Benfica so he will certainly not play for England.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was far from pleased with his club’s 3-2 loss at Leeds yesterday. Pardew fielded many first-teamers in the Elland Road defeat and despite his disappointment, was full of praise for a couple of his new summer signings after the match:

Sometimes in a game like that you learn more, and I’ve learnt more about individual players today than I have all pre-season. Cabaye was a positive – he played the holding role and you could see that, although he is a great passer, he also has defensive qualities…Demba Ba was good in all he did without actually getting a goal, and Danny Simpson played well.

Steven Taylor showed his scoring capabilities once again for Newcastle. The big centre-half grabbed his side’s first goal and served a reminder of the form that saw him score in each of his side’s final three games last term. At 4.5 in FPL, he looks a decent punt for a low-price defender.

Roberto Mancini was a happy man after Man City’s 3-0 demolition of Inter Milan. With an outstanding David Silva pulling the strings from the right flank and resultantly picking up the man of the match award, Mancini also saw Mario Malotelli and Edin Dzeko find the net as his strikers start to pick up form ahead of next weekend’s Community Shield showdown with Man United.

Post-match, Mancini praised all three players but his most intriguing comments came when the subject of Carlos Tevez arose, suggesting the striker‘s exit may not be as definite as previously thought:

When Carlos comes back on Thursday we will have four strikers fighting for the shirts. That’s good for us. When you are playing in four competitions, we need that.

Wesley Sneijder was somewhat cryptic in yesterday‘s post-match press conference in Dublin, after Inter‘s loss to Man City. The Dutchman has been linked with a move to Man United all summer and although Sir Alex Ferguson seemed to write off the chances of the transfer last week, Sneijder was not quite so pessimistic. When asked if he was likely to remain an Inter player next summer, Sneijder replied:

“What will happen? We will see. There is always a chance that something will happen, but we will see. There is always speculation. I’ve said before, I’ve played for almost 10 years at the highest level and every year there is speculation.”

Blackburn Rovers look set to finally make some leeway in the transfer market over the next few days. With Phil Jones leaving Ewood Park and talk of Chris Samba’s exit, Steve Kean looks to have a positive addition to the Rovers ranks in the form of Dundee United striker David Goodwillie.

Which option do people think is best?

Silva plus Tiote (Tiote will be a non playing sub for me)
    Or
Yaya plus Sinclair (Sinclair to rotate with Tarrabt)

Was all set on Yaya then watched yesterdays game and he played as a holding player not like the box to box player of last season

Plus you could start with Tiote/Ferguson in your 15, only to free up funds so that you can fill up on Chelsea etc for the start, and then a few gameweeks in, once the good players for this season start getting revealed, you can then sub out your bench warming loser, and switch for someone like Nathan Dyer or Moses if they've already bagged a few assists and are nailed on, (for example).

The point is, that you could start the season with a 4.5M or 4.0M midfielder, just to free up cash, as you won't be playing them in the first couple of weeks, and then transfer them out for a better option once you have some data on this season. You don't have to keep the non-playing 4.0M in your team all season just because you had them in GW1.

I don't see Sinclair doing much, but it's a tricky call between Silva and Yaya - both are instrumental. At a push, I'd say Silva plus Tiote as everything will go through Silva while Tiote is crucial to Newcastle doing well and will attract bonus points when you do need him from your bench.

Thanks for that. In past sesaons i've used Barry Ferguson as the fifth midfielder and i see Tiote as a similar type player. Not much chance of goals/assists but will play and always has a chance of bonus.

be warned Tiote is a yellow card making machine. 14 last season. This season yellows hinder bonus pts. He only got 12 bps last season and can't see many more for him this season.

I'd prefer spending .5 more on moses if you want bench fodder. Moses will play, Wigan have kind early fixtures and he plays up front.

but having said that Tiote is still better than the craziness i've seen on here of picking Newcastle's Ferguson... you may as well pick me for all the game time he and I will get at St James's.

That was just Mancini trying out a few players in front of Yaya, who is still picking up fitness after being injured recently. I'm sticking with the big man and hoping for a return against Swansea first game up.

Possibly. It's got me worried about Yaya though. City have so many attacking options that they do not need to play Yaya in an attacking role. If he plays deep in the charity shield he's out. 8m for a dm is ridiculous

Yeah, Yaya Toure is not great value in my opinion. He would do really well to beat 6 G's and 6 A's this season, and for 8.0M, he needs to be hitting higher than that.

          He plays too deep basically.

Just get Silva instead of Toure for Swansea at home.

Then you don't need to worry about the Man City striker situation, just get Silva in and captain him - job done!

You would never want to captain Y or K Toure in any match either, whereas last year, midfielders like Nani, (8.0M) and VDV, (7.5M) were both viable captaincy material.

De Jong and Yaya with Silva in front of them is probably the best central midfield triad in the Prem.

In tougher games, I can see Mancini putting Barry in there, shifting Silva out to the wing, and playing Yaya in his place.

Having a casual argument in work with one of my colleagues about the league's top goalscorers.

You may have seen in the plethora of Tevez news-pieces that they often refer to him as "the most prolific striker in the Barclay's Premier League for the last two years". It's a lovely little factoid which any self respecting sports journalist eats up.

Anyways, when I advised my friend of this he quite righfully questioned "Why two years? Why not three? four? or five?". Being the statto I am I saw this as a challenge.

So obviously Berbatov and Tevez were the most prolific last year and Tevez was the most prolific over the last 2 years but who do you think was the most prolific:
    1) over the last 3 seasons.
    2) over the last 4 seasons.
    3) over the last 5 seasons.

2/3 of these make interesting reading, for this coming fantasy season at least.

      Correct Answers

      Most prolific goalscorers:
      1) Last 3 seasons = Bent with 53 goals.
      2) Last 4 seasons = Torres with 66 goals.
      3) Last 5 seasons = Rooney with 75 goals.

It must be noted Drogba has scored 74 goals and Bent 72 goals over the last 5 seasons so they both just missed out. Also for answer 3, Torres was at a distinct disadvantage as he has only played 4 seasons in the EPL, therefore he is the most prolific goalscorer in the EPL in his time there.

      Interesting eh?

It's too hard to call at that price range. Moses could prove to be a bargain, but at the same time could easily be toilet as he is only 5.0M. The same goes for Holt.

Simpson looks good for 4.0M, but I am not a fan of Newcastle's fixtures all season. They don't seem to have any solid runs of good fixtures, except one back-to-back gameweek period where they are at home to some bad sides.

What do people think of Angel Rangel? He seems quite attacking to me, and Swansea were good at the back last year, so hoping for some potential early cleanies in their good fixtures to start off, and some decent attacking returns to compensate if they turn out to be naff.

Angel Rangel is a very good player. Dunno if he'll get many attacking points (though he has potential), but he should be a certain Swansea starter.

He does get down the wing quite a bit, maybe a goal and a couple of assists over the season, but it'll be nothing anywhere near spectacular. It's a toss up between him and Williams, really, and over the season I'd expect Williams to edge it.

Yeah, all good this end. Making the most of my last day on holiday by catching up with FFS!

I quite like the high prices this year... it will mean transfer hits to bring in some of the big players based on fixtures will be more crucial to overall success. I don't think the overall winner will be someone who generally sticks with the same squad making the odd transfer.

Having said that, it will require more luck in the transfer moves paying off, so we'll see.

My rival has already said he's struggling to throw a squad together so knowledge of the key lesser valued players (via this website amongst others) will really help.

Exactly, far too many people are treating this GW1 team business as though we are playing in a game where you cannot transfer out players.

We will all make some good choices, and also a couple of duds, so we can just correct these mistakes over the first few weeks. If you plan too well and get it spot on, then you will be wondering what to do with your free transfers as you like your team too much.

Of course, if you get off to a bad start, then you can kiss goodbye to winning FPL, but then only one person out of 2.5 million people actually wins it anyway, and the prize for winning FPL sucks, so no need to worry about it.

Moses is the best prospect in mid for 5m or less. He will play much more this season and most of his performances last season were restricted by Nzogbia being there. He is a risk but has Prem experience and plays in an advanced role. N Dyer has no Prem experience, plays for a promoted team that will be fighting relegation and was not even one of the best players in the championship last season.

On the risk front Dyer is Mount Sinai compared to Moses's small hillock.

I know he wasn't in the PFA's Championship team of the season last season and has scored 10 goals in 164 appearances over the past six years for teams such as Sheff Utd, Southampton and burnley.

Please enlighten me as to what exactly I'm missing in the wonderful Nathan Dyer as a Premiership player and fantasy football prospect. I mean that as well...I want some good reasons for picking him as he's cheap...just can't find any evidence at the moment.

Jonty, my reply was to Jas not you! I agree, he's not a good FPL player and mentioned it a few times on here. He can move the ball quickly over the halfway line but that's about it as he's rarely involved in the points-scoring business end of the pitch.

Plus, Routledge has been signed and he'll be replacing Dyer, so it's a big fat No for the little thief. Hopefully Jas will still pick him, though.

some speculation for later in the season. with bolton selling matt taylor and losing chung yong lee for the season they will be very reliant on eagles and petrov staying fit. should petrov get injured which is always a probability that could easily open up an OOP spot for someone. most likely tyrone mears as a right winger? who knows? just throwing it out there

It's a good point, AB. Once Bolton's tough fixtures are out of the way it's a great time to pick their key performing value players.

I recall Wolves had a similar run of difficult fixtures against the top sides last year, but once they're out the way then it's a great time to jump on board.

Benayoun if a Modric or similar isn't signed.

All those saying Lampard and to a lesser extent, Malouda, are living in the past. Chelsea have a new manager and that's no guarantee of the same side, shape, and performances as what's gone before.

I started with Malouda and Drogba last year, btw, based on Lampard's deeper lying role in pre-season and Malouda's form as a 3rd striker in the season before.
