Man City hammer Inter as David Silva pulls the strings. Alan Pardew’s unhappy. Wesley Sneijder fails to write off a move away from Inter and Daniel Sturridge wants to stay at the Bridge thanks to a new-found freedom. Here’s this morning’s Scribbles, folks:

Bolton have been linked with a move for Shaun Wright-Phillips following the sickening leg-break injury to Chung Yong-Lee. The Man City star would fit seamlessly into Owen Coyle’s starting XI, though his wages may prove to be a stumbling block. The Trotters’ new signing Chris Eagles can play on the right flank and comes in at 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), though Coyle has been playing Eagles as a support striker in recent games, meaning a possible right wing role for Gretar Steinsson or Tyron Mears if Coyle fails to bring in re-inforcements. With both listed as 4.5 defenders, it’s a situation worth monitoring.

Staying on the subject of Bolton, Coyle has also been linked with another loan move for Daniel Sturridge as he looks to shuffle his pack. Citing his great relationship with Andre Villas-Boas, Coyle then proceeded to lavish praise on Sturridge, with his admiration for the player very much apparent:

Daniel is such an outstanding young talent but I think he has to play week in, week out now. He’s had six months of being a regular starter with us and he will probably know he’s got to start these games now. I played him through the middle and he was sensational for me. I always felt he wanted to play through the middle…

If Sturridge‘s latest comments are anything to go by, however, Coyle’s pursuit of the player may prove to be a fruitless one. Sturridge seems a happy man under Villas-Boas and in light of the club’s sixth straight pre-season win, has been talking of a new-found freedom to his play:

The manager has given me the licence to express myself and I don’t think I have had that before with any manager. He has let me off the leash and said go out and enjoy yourself. I have a lot more freedom than I have ever had and I think I enjoy my football more..

It is not just me either; everyone feels like that. He wants us to attack and not be too defensive. That is refreshing. The tour has been great. The manager has shown faith in me.

Fantasy managers will be crossing their fingers and hoping Sturridge does depart Stamford Bridge, though; at 6.5 in FPL his performances for Bolton last season suggest he’ll be a real bargain. If he stays at Chelsea, squad rotation looks likely to kill off his Fantasy potential.

Javier Hernandez’s Gold Cup exploits for Mexico and the subsequent rest period was always going to mean the striker had some catching up to do in terms of match fitness. With the striker now sidelined with concussion, his pre-season training schedule has been further disrupted and Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted the player may not be available until the end of August, meaning there’s a chance Hernandez may not see any Premier League game time until game week 4, in mid September:

Javier was always going to get a break until he did his proper pre-season. In a two-week period now he’ll do some training but he won’t play. We’ll have him back in three to four weeks.

Arsenal suffered a scare in yesterday’s draw with New York Red Bulls when Jack Wilshere was withdrawn after only seven minutes with an ankle knock. With Abou Diaby already sidelined for ten weeks and Cesc Fabregas looking likely to exit the Emirates, the last thing Arsene Wenger needs is more injuries to central midfielders. The Gunners boss seemed positive on Wilshere after the match, saying:

It is not very serious. They say he might be out for the whole of next week because he has an ankle inflammation. But he has not torn anything. He is a quick healer usually and a tough boy so I hope he will be quicker than the medical predictions.

The England game is on August 10 and I don’t know [whether he will be available]. They told me he might be out next week. If he is out next week, he will not play against Benfica so he will certainly not play for England.

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew was far from pleased with his club’s 3-2 loss at Leeds yesterday. Pardew fielded many first-teamers in the Elland Road defeat and despite his disappointment, was full of praise for a couple of his new summer signings after the match:

Sometimes in a game like that you learn more, and I’ve learnt more about individual players today than I have all pre-season. Cabaye was a positive – he played the holding role and you could see that, although he is a great passer, he also has defensive qualities…Demba Ba was good in all he did without actually getting a goal, and Danny Simpson played well.

Steven Taylor showed his scoring capabilities once again for Newcastle. The big centre-half grabbed his side’s first goal and served a reminder of the form that saw him score in each of his side’s final three games last term. At 4.5 in FPL, he looks a decent punt for a low-price defender.

Roberto Mancini was a happy man after Man City’s 3-0 demolition of Inter Milan. With an outstanding David Silva pulling the strings from the right flank and resultantly picking up the man of the match award, Mancini also saw Mario Malotelli and Edin Dzeko find the net as his strikers start to pick up form ahead of next weekend’s Community Shield showdown with Man United.

Post-match, Mancini praised all three players but his most intriguing comments came when the subject of Carlos Tevez arose, suggesting the striker‘s exit may not be as definite as previously thought:

When Carlos comes back on Thursday we will have four strikers fighting for the shirts. That’s good for us. When you are playing in four competitions, we need that.

Wesley Sneijder was somewhat cryptic in yesterday‘s post-match press conference in Dublin, after Inter‘s loss to Man City. The Dutchman has been linked with a move to Man United all summer and although Sir Alex Ferguson seemed to write off the chances of the transfer last week, Sneijder was not quite so pessimistic. When asked if he was likely to remain an Inter player next summer, Sneijder replied:

“What will happen? We will see. There is always a chance that something will happen, but we will see. There is always speculation. I’ve said before, I’ve played for almost 10 years at the highest level and every year there is speculation.”

Blackburn Rovers look set to finally make some leeway in the transfer market over the next few days. With Phil Jones leaving Ewood Park and talk of Chris Samba’s exit, Steve Kean looks to have a positive addition to the Rovers ranks in the form of Dundee United striker David Goodwillie.

Yah I am liking the look of Dunne at 5.5... He was a must-have two seasons ago, and should benefit from a stronger team this year

      Richard Dunne?

If yes, then I don't know, if I want to invest in Villa at this point. The better formed player on a term in horrible form and condition? Villa are a notoriously slow starting team.

Okay, I've nearly settled on my team now. I think there will be an opportunity to obtain some more value before the season starts (i.e. Modric or Benayoun for Malouda or Silva for VdV) transfers pending.

I've tried to pitch my team and squad with the opening few gameweeks in mind with a view to tweaking thereafter.

There are a couple of punts (Fabio, Moses, Graham) which if they come off, great. Otherwise I won't have too many problems with rotation etc.

    Given (Ruddy) - £9m
    Baines, Kompany, O'Shea (Fabio, Simpson) - £28m
VdV, Malouda, Cahill, Taarabt, Moses - £41m
    Bent, Zamora (Graham) - £22m

Objectively I think my attack isn't as strong as it could be (no Rooney or RvP for instance) but the forwards I do have have good fixtures and are assured of their place. I've opted for a more valuable midfield instead.

I have Cahill in my midfield too, but am questioning it. 9m buys you an awful lot of forward given that Cahill 'only' has goals to his game.

Firstly, I’d like to point out that I have never watched a full npower championship game and do not recognise any of these players. Therefore my analysis is purely on statistics.

    Goalkeepers

Last season in the premier league, we didn’t get much from the keepers of the 3 promoted teams. There was interchange with Newcastle and Blackpool. West Brom were notoriously leaky so there wasn’t much to earn there. Newcastle did finish equal 8th on clean sheets, but that only entailed 9 CS total.

    09/10 10/11

    Newcastle 22 9
    West Brom 15 2
    Blackpool 16 6

    QPR 7 25
    Swansea 24 21
    Norwich 19* 11

    * = Norwich City played in League 1 in 09/10

    Paddy Kenny (QPR)

    Fantasy 66 Games Played 44
Clean Sheets 24 Goals Against 30

Paddy Kenny has premier league experience with Sheffield United. He was signed to QPR at the beginning of the 2010 season along with first choice left and right backs Bradley Orr and Clint Hill and it has certainly made a difference for QPR’s clean sheet haul. He made the team of the year for the championship. At this stage he is very likely to continue as QPR’s #1.

    Dorus de Vries (SWA)

    Fantasy 46 Games Played 46
Clean Sheets 21 Goals Against 42

Dorus de Vries has played every league game for Swansea in the past 2 seasons. Only conceded 11 goals at home so if a good home/away rotation partner is found could very well do nicely as a budget keeper. Again looks set to continue as #1 keeper this season.

I like the Anderson pick, but Downing is 8.5, don't think he will spend much time on the ball. I would look at Benayoun @ 7.0, seems to be dialed-in and being rested.

anyone goin for cech + collins/dunne over given + cole?
you can play cech every game and collins/dunne will have a good fpl year.. you have to rotate given with a 4.5 which is costlier too..
collins ea rating is high and could steal bps and goals

Yes but prices start to fluctuate quite a lot and as you know you don't gain value as quick as you lose value on players. Also you've got to look at your team with a long term plan, kind of like a dog isn't just for xmas. Otherwise you'll be paying 4 points a game week to try to get the team out there that you want to field.

Great use of sarcasm though ladies.

You watch...when Van Der Vaart gets injured the question marks around whether he actually play take place almost right up until kick off.

Same with Fergies mind games with rooney...'ooh, Wayne is injured' only for him to turn up at kick off.

With RVP you know he's injured...because his leg shatters into a million pieces.

So you're saying that RVP's potential price rise throughout the first 5 gameweeks, and potential haul is not worth a transfer?

So a good fantasy haul and some extra cash is not worth a free transfer straight to another good player, just on the off chance he gets injured in gameweek 5.

            Good use of logic there.

Ok dwebsterlfc, name 3 strikers who are sure to start the season and score well in the first 5 gameweeks (i.e. good fixtures, 100% to start every game, proven to be a good scorer on FPL).

Bent and maybe Zamora or Rodallega

I have Bent and Zamora. I currently have Suarez too as I think he'll be fit. I'm obviously monitoring that though so that could change. May be I'm just upset because I can't afford him.

I've spent quite heavily on defenders this year as I think the best value for money is there. Chicharito and Berb are both good for goals but you never know who's going to play and Rooney's pretty guaranteed. btw I'm a Liverpool fan so I'm not just saying this. If sturridge goes on loan he'll go in after gw3.

Fair enough, I've looked at Suarez, Bent and Rooney too, but decided that United's fixtures and the wealth of strikers has put me off that scent. If Suarez starts that might put a spanner in the works but there's no way of knowing and there's no guarantee that he'll score as well as RVP. Bent will score well but he won't justify his 10m price tag in my opinion. I'm going with RVP Zamora Odem at the moment, even though Odem's first 2 aren't the best, I still think he could score and offers better value for money. I can always bench him in gw1 and or gw2

But when he isn't injured he will nearly almost get points for you. Than when he gets injured you can get him out for Rooney or Torres.

that makes him fantasy gold....always scores for you in nice runs, his price rockets and then you sell him for a profit...for say rooney or Drogba ...and when he's fit again get him back for less money and the cycle starts again. RVP is probably my favourite fantasy player.

The thing is, is that you only gain .1 for every 2 that he goes up, by then you're Rooney or Torres etc will have might have gone up by .2

I'm not inexperienced at this lads, I don't know why you think it's such an invalid point.

He's a great player but a gamble in my opinion purely on him being injury prone.

Good point. I don't think I'll get any players in, just in case they get injured.

After all, Lampard, VdV, Rooney, Fabregas, Nasri, Drogba, Bale and Tevez were all injured at some point last season. It's just too much of a risk.

Think I might put him in now then ;o) kiss kiss.

lol, I do see the appeal of his but his inflated price tag this year has made the gamble too big for me that's the last i'll say of it.

Do all the lads on here have a league set up?

The whole point of this game is to get players while their hot and get them out when they're not. When fit, RVP is the hottest player around. You can't not pick someone because they're injury prone if they're currently fit.

Get him while he plays and scores loads, then the moment he gets injured, out he goes, and you wait again until he's fit and ready to go then back he comes.

If you lads are generally going with a 12 stiker, 10 striker and 7 for example, are you filling your midfield with 1 nig name and a couple of 6.5's? or are you saving money by getting cheaper defenders?

Probably, but with him, I don't think he could go the entire off-season getting ready to hit the ground running. Something tells me he's smoked more blunts and got more tats than he has run sprints/drills. He could be a good punt for Norwich GW2 while the weathers pleasant. Then again he could give them 65 minutes of hell at home against Chelsea...but my guess is they will get the break beat off their asses. He's always a set-piece assist threat ass whoopin or no.

Bubbles would probably know better than me, but I'd imagine Caulker, Taylor, Williams and Rangel. In my opinion, neither Tate nor Monk (when fit, he's a contender) are Premiership quality. Caulker is young but better than the others, I'd expect him to go straight in.

    Lads,

Stuck on final pricy defender / average mid combo:

    A - Terry and Murphy
    B - Vermaelen and Taarabt
C - Distin and N'Zog (already have Bent)

Any thoughts? Trying to be different to the standard team on here so suggestions welcome.

Yes Anderson and Park. I also think that Welbeck will get a hollar, he looks quicker, stronger and actually taller. But in reality they may give...it pains me to say it, Owen a decent go at it. It's clear that life's Karma doesn't want him to win, but the wee hobbit does find a way.

For Arsenal, Gervinho will definitely reap the benifits of RvP. Also keep an eye out for Ramsey.

Not sure Park is a good choice - he tends to get the nod for the trickier games, not the easier, points-gathering games.

Owen? He's a Carling Cup player and super-sub now, Welbeck is probably higher up the pecking order than Owen.

Benayoun and McEachran, Malouda will never play centrally for this team, nor will he ever play on the right. Might as well cut his right leg off. He is definitely a player that will get his. Everything usually goes out the window when they have more than one striker in. Torres and Drogba will go to whatever side pleases them, track back for access. Frank will have at best an average year. His workrate is less than last year, Clearly AVB sees this and is trying to give him a polite hint that advanced holding mid is the best that he's going to get.

What's up with all the Sunderland and Newcastle cheapie coverage? Baffles the mind...

Question is who will your third (shite) defender be:

      GW1:
      Bramble (0 pts.)
Simpson* (-2 ts.) (*toon most likely to own-goal vs. Arsenal)
      Orr (1 or 6 pts.)

Ive got a question for you Arsenal fans out there.

If Fabregas leaves, will Ramsey play even though Nasri stays?

If both Fabregas and Nasri leaves and Arsenal doesnt strengthen their midfield, will Ramsey play?

I like what ive seen of Ramsey and reccon he will have a good season if he gets the time. And it would be wonderful to have an attacking arsenal midfielder priced for the cheap sum of 6.5

There are also questions about a change in formation due to the arrival of Gerviniho. The old 4-5-1 wont work with both RVP and Gerv, so what the future holds is anyones guess.

I doubt Ramsey will ever play defensive, wilshere is far more capable there.

Yep...that simple. Ramsey willl be in the hole with Nasri, hopefully Rosicky will sit his little ass down, though I will say he looks better than last year. Arsenal seems loaded with wing-hugging players. I did like how Gervinho is not affraid to get inside. He is touted as being versatile.

The problem with that picture is that it is Wilshere who would fill the role that Fab plays. But when Fab was injured last season didnt they play Nasri in the same position?

I have a hard time imagining Wilshere in a more forward role, but Ramsey filling the role of Nasri isnt impossible to think of.

No it would be Nasri playing Cesc role.

Last season Nasri was mainly used out wide. If he stays and Cesc leaves - think Nasri will play in the middle and Gervinho out wide.

Haven't seen Ramsey on the right, can't see him as being as versatile as Masri when they had to hide Rosicky centrally, as silly as that sounds. Rosicky will screw up all these equations...

Ramsey's first games for Cardiff were at RB. Not saying that's his best position (obviously), but he'd be fine if he HAD to be used on the right of the pitch.

    Graham + Hoolahan = 10.5?

My guess is graham's graft and eye for a pass will benefit Sinclair more than anything. Hoolahan is a creator, Sinclair is all about goals much more direct & selfish which is what you want for fpl. The better graham does = more chances for Sinclair to score imo.

I've gone with Graham. Looking at the goals he scored for a very average Watford team I think he could do well.

Scored all types of goals - very much an opportunist type of player and a good finisher with either foot and good in the air.

Just my opinion though - everyone else will tell you Holt as he's on pens

Debate: best attacking coverage from Chelsea & Man City?

Chelsea I just do not have a clue. Leaning towards Malouda but there is so much competition for the 3 spots up front - Torres, Drogba, Malouda, Kalou, Anelka, Sturridge, Benayoun. Too much uncertainty. And Lampard is playing a much deeper role. There arent even too many more friendlies to decide and of course they arent playing CS this year. Beginning to think that leaving it be might be the best option, have some flexibility and see what happens at Stoke.

Man City - think I'll stay away from Tevez, Aguero & Dzeko. Toure seems to be playing deeper. For me that leaves Silva, and if I fancy a punt maybe Balotelli. I know many people are going for Aguero but from Mancini's comments it seems like Tevez might still get playing time and Dzeko has looked good in a couple of friendlies.

I'm going with Silva at the moment, and that's all. Lampard is too expensive and I'm not sure I see a regular set of players coming out of the rest of them. Aguero could be good for city, I'll be keeping an eye on that.

I don't think I'll start with any from Chelsea.

From City, Silva is a definite, and just like you, a Balotelli punt seems like a possibility. If I have both, then I'm leaving £2.5/3M in the bank and then switching, for GW2, either:

      Silva -> Malouda/Lampard
      Balotelli -> Torres/Drogba
      £6Mish midfielder -> Benayoun/Kalou

That way I've a good amount of City attackers for Swansea at home, then any Chelsea midfielder/striker that I want for GW2.

Right, something that's bouncing around my brain, and many other people's I'd presume. Baines or Cashley? The extra £0.5M doesn't matter to me at the moment, so it's a straight fight out for the honour of being in my team.

My plan, although it's unlikely to stay that way:
    - Baines from the start
    - Swap to Cole for GW6 (Everton's fixtures are horrible from 6-11)
    - GW12 it's WC time (if I can hang on that long), bring back Baines.

    Flawless, right?
