As the dust settles after a rather unpleasantly high-average Gameweek, it’s time to lick our wounds, get back to the drawing board and look ahead. With one of the strongest forthcoming fixture lists (AVL, bur, SWA, sun, WHU, spurs, HUL), Everton, and specifically their penalty-taking defender Leighton Baines, look too good to ignore. But just how do we fit this 7.0-priced defender into our team?

Those with the spare cash and a sacrificial lamb ready to be slaughtered are spared the deliberation that shall follow. For the rest of us, though, it’s time to indulge. While I do realize that this could be a very specific decision on each individual’s part, we’ll look at the usual suspects that may be compromised to fulfil our Leighton Fantasy.

We’ll try and work around this supposed Perfect Front Eight (PF8) :

Angel Di Maria | Cesc Fabregas | Raheem Sterling | Gylfi Sigurdsson| George Boyd
Diego Costa | Sergio Aguero | Danny Welbeck or Graziano Pellè

Ideally we’d like Baines sitting atop that front 8 but for most of us that’d mean a Wildcard and a whole lot of fillers/enablers sprinkled on the top. In short, one of of these players, or a key player in defence, will have to be sacrificed.

Like-for-like defender sacrifice

Branislav Ivanovic → Baines

The 26.8% that are currently basking in the glories of the big Serb have a rather straightforward ticket onto the Baines Wagon. But picking between the two can feel like choosing between which kidney to donate. Comfort is, however, afforded by the history books. Consider the last three seasons and Baines comfortably trumps Ivanovic both in terms of points total and points over 90 minutes. With evidently better fixtures, you’d expect Baines to replicate that record at least for the next six.

Points per 90 minutes (pp90)
Ivanovic     Baines

13/14  159(4.51)  169(5.36)

12/13  142(4.37)  177(4.66)

11/12   80(3.18)  134(4.06)

Terry/Cahill/Kompany/Zabaleta/6.5 → Baines

As you may have rightly noticed, this move requires a little spare cash but if provided the opportunity I’d have no qualms about going forward with this one.

The forward-thinking sacrifice

Welbeck/Pellè + 4.5 Defender→ Steven Naismith + Baines

Imagine you’re the captain of a sinking ship with all of our PF8 guys aboard. You need to lose at least one of them, so who do you sacrifice? Obviously, aside from George Boyd. For me it would have to be Pellè (Welbeck owners read Welbeck) who would be the one walking the plank for me.

The credibility of this move comes down to whether you think the Everton duo would outscore Pellè (Welbeck) and your 4.5 defender.

The midfield dagger to the heart

Fabregas + 4.0 → Chadli + Baines

These are slightly faith-testing times for Fabregas owners. There’s this tangibly growing minority that now sees our ever-assisting sweet-heart as expendable, especially the ones still without the services of one Angel Di Maria. Shedding Fabregas for Nacir Chadli is an altogether much more bitter pill to swallow. Nacer Chadli doesn’t care though. He proudly sits a point above Fabregas in the midfielder rankings and his fixtures from Gameweek 9 onwards suggest this move may have more legs than you are likely to give it credit for.

There’s always Stewart Downing

Downing as the cheap fourth mid

Sometime in November 2010, I was off on a vacation with very limited internet access, I couldn’t come about deciding on a difficult midfield dilemma. I had to choose one of Stewart Downing or Samir Nasri, both 7.0-rated midfielders back then. Downing made his way into my team that night but never after. In that sense this move has a touch of nostalgia about it for those of us who played the game during Downing’s Villa days. This might be the perfect enabler for some, yet an utter no-go for the others. That won’t stop me from mentioning him here, for Stewart Downing in our teams is something which comes about with regularity of the World Cups.

The Last Resort – Go Wild

Undoubtedly many shall be Wildcarding this Gameweek given the international break. That’s one way to get Leighton on board.

4.5 | 4.0
Baines | Bertrand/Clyne | 4.0 | 4.0 | 4.0
ADM | Fab | Sterling | Siggy | Boyd
Costa | Kun | Welbz

With a transfer value (TV) of 102.7, I am currently 0.9 short of this line-up. Assuming my TV is about average, that’s at least 0.5 too much for most of us bar the astute TV collectors. Though there are compromises available in different flavours for those willing to go down this route. I’ll list some of them and with that end your suffering here.

Chambers instead of Bertrand/Clyne
Pellè instead of Kun
Tadic instead of Sterling
(As a frustrated Tadic owner I don’t recommend this at all, just putting it out here as food for thought)

Another great guide to getting Baines in. I just can't spare the cash at the moment. But think Terry to Baines is possible in a week or two.

One thing I'd like to add here. Some of the suggestions up there may seem quite specific to guys with highly non-template teams or those looking for differentials as replacement. They can always go, for eg. Mane instead of Chadli or Puncheon instead of Downing. That may be obvious to some, but just putting it out here. My primary aim was to suggest the structure/skeleton of the transfers that may enable the majority of us to get Baines. I used the Staple Players forming our template as faces for the transfers, if that makes sense.
Hope the article provides some food for thought.

Switching Ivan>Azpili and then getting the additional 1.2m to get Baines in.. that Could work? Azpili has an imba BPS as was highlighted in a different article.

Yes it'd work. Considering you also get to keep a Chelsea cover is good. But then you need one more defender priced 5.8m or above to use that 1.2m and upgrade to Baines. Not sure many have Ivan plus a 5.8/6m defender. Though, if you're setup that way and willing to do two moves instead of a simple Ivan -> Baines then that's a nice alternative.

Hey guys, would any of you play Moreno over someone in my starting XI?

    Begovic
    Ivanovic, Clyne, Bertrand
    Fabregas, Sterling, Di Maria, Siggy
    Costa, Welbeck, Pelle

    Bench: McCarthy, Moreno, Boyd, Moore

Could play Moore over one of the Southampton guys to spread the risk, but then again you could be done in by Cisse if he is finding a bit of form.

I got Baines in last week, just wondering if there is any tinkering I could do?

    Begovic

    Ivan, Baines, Clyne, (Hutton, Duff)

    Siggy, Fab, ADM, Sterling, Schnelderlin

    Costa, Pelle, Ulloa

    2FT and 0.3ITB

    Cheers

Nice team there WWJ. Personally I'd be tempted to do Ulloa -> Naismith given Naismith's fixtures and the fact he plays for a much better team. Could also go Bego -> Adrian(preferably)/Guzan/Mannone, slight improvement imo. Nothing else seems worth tinkering there. Try posting on the main thread here http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/10/08/scout-scribbles-elmohamady-worry-for-tigers/ for more respones.

I'm looking at Sterling to Henderson/Downing/Mane and Bardsley to Baines.

Potentially could go cheap with 5th(Wanyama) midfield and do Naismith>Welbeck for -4 but doesn't sit right getting Naismith out with his run of fixtures and goal vs Man U.

As much as I'd like to have Baines, dropping Sterling is not an option for me. Anything else you could do? I'd keep Naismith as well.

Nice article mate. I think the Fab -> Fund Baines is picking up a lot of steam alright. I have considered it a lot and now have to think if I believe it or Im just being swayed by the hype

I think there's no question with fixtures and his attacking threat Baines has the ability to do well over the coming weeks. It is a question though of whether Baines plus midfielder X is better than Premium midfielder (Fabs) and defender Y. The success of this move depends as much on the performance of the Fab replacement.

I'd say that Tadic, Mane and Chadli all have strong potential to beat Fab for points anyway over Oct/Nov. If I had Fab I'd make the move.

Currently Fab is lacking a goal threat so cant see me being stung too much by not having him. It may be a costly buy back though. And if he does find his shooting boots, we could be in for a world of pain 😆

      Thanks mate 🙂
Re. the Fab ->Fund Baines does look to be picking up pace. Though, I'd still be reluctant to lose Fab if I had him. There's also Qpr for him in the next 3, now that could be a massacre. Personally, sacrificing Welbeck/Pelle is really growing on me(actually mentioned my bias towards the move in the article, got cut out in editing 😛 ), esp. because I am still not fully convinced by either of Welbeck or Pelle.

Pelle maybe. He's cooking along at an even pace. Can't see him being much different. Welbeck could well explode though with those fixtures. Only had one game against easy opposition and he brought back a haul.

Great article, lot of time for this!
I'm currently on the forward-thinking sacrifice but not sure if Naismith really is worth dropping Pelle for.
+ When/if Everton blank I've doubled up and their current form isn't really making me want to double up.

Look above, that's my favoured move as well, but like you I also have concerns whether Everton's form justify a double up. It's either that or Ivan -> Baines for me.

Hey guys I could do with a bit of help trying to get a better defense. I have had Colocinni for a while and he is really like having 1 man less, so I'd like to get rid of him quickly. Here's my team:

    Szczesny

    Kompany - Ivanovic - Colocinni

    Siggy - ADM - Fab - Chadli - Sterling

    Costa - Pelle

    Subs are all just fillers

agree. a pen save is as good as a goal imo so would like to see a bp system which reflects that more. some pen saves are easy due to awful pens, but the same can be said about goals, some goals are tap-ins. even for a tap-in you have to be in the right place, to save a poor pen you still need to guess right

Not at all AB. Can partially see where you're coming from when you say that. Though some of these moves actually help break the template a bit. I suppose it's every body doing something on the lines of Fab to Chadli, leading to yet another template is probably what irks you, is it?

Were I to WC, I'd personally go with both Baines and Ivan and 3 cheapies, that'd be close to 26.5m.
Bit stiff, I suppose. Your Backline isn't looking shabby either. Though as nailed on as he looks atm, I'd always have Luis at the back of my mind as an Azpi owner.

    1) Your writing "Sometime in November 2010 I couldn’t come about deciding on a difficult midfield dilemma" puts my own personal problems in a significantly better light. FWIW I think you're worrying about FPL a little too much

2.) Excellent article. For me, the choice comes down less about how to get Baines in, but how to get Ageuro and Baines in. Without Ageuro (and the other Usual Suspects) it's really not very hard: my current mob

    Bego / 4m
    Ivan / Baines / Bertrand / Taylor / Duff
    ADM / Cesc / Sterling / Frank / Siggy
    Pelle / Welbz / Costa

Needs City, for sure, Ivan > Chambers free’s money for Silva to come in. Can’t have it all. And Baines is now essential

Sorry for the rather delayed reply, at work and all that.
Your concern there really felt warm and personal(in a good way ofcourse). But then who on this site doesn't(worry about FPL). Though I can see it regressing soon, whether I like it or not 🙂
Cheers for the appreciation. I think you're spot on with the Baines + Aguero thing there, the conundrum is actually fitting both and much less otherwise.

Regarding your team, gotta say it looks really good. Given, Pelle, Welbeck perform as we have envisaged them to, you could well get away there without Aguero. Personally I wouldn't do Ivan > Chambers for Silva, you're good with that MF as it is imo.

Pieters -> Baines looks a no brainer.
Sturridge could be the ideal differential in the coming weeks so good there as well.
Sterling to Chadli I assume is forced upon to enable getting Sturridge. I think you'll have some time yet to judge the merit of that move better.

To be fair, a game against United isn't the best example as they were always likely to score, and it would have been very different had that goal gone in.

I can see myself dropping Pelle for a 5.5m striker at some point to bring in Baines, but I'd like some clean sheets too
