Mesut Ozil is ruled out for three months due to knee ligament damage. Scott Dann is expected to make a quick recovery from a knee injury for Palace, Esteban Cambiasso returns to action for Leicester, Andre Schurrle is a concern for Germany, whilst Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic pleads for patience after a slow start to the season.

Gunners Rocked By Ozil setback

Arsene Wenger is set to be without his record signing for up to three months after Ozil was ruled out of action by German national doctors yesterday. A statement on the DFB website went on to say:

“The MRI examination today at National Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt in Munich revealed a partial rupture of the outer band of the left knee joint. The treatment is conservative, with six weeks of immobilisation of the knee joint. Mesut Ozil is likely to be (out for) 10 to 12 weeks.”

The Scout Says: With Aaron Ramsey still sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Ozil’s loss (which could see him miss out until Gameweek 20) looks poised to force another reshuffle in the Gunners’ midfield ahead of a very kind run of matches. Alexis Sanchez seems far less likely to be omitted from the XI now – the Chilean has started just one of the last three league outings but looks vital over the upcoming schedule as Arsene Wenger’s side attempt to bounce back from their 2-0 loss at Chelsea. For those who feel Sanchez’ 10.3 price tag is a little too expensive, though, Santi Cazorla (8.2) could be moved into “the hole” if Wenger opts for a 4-2-3-1, whilst Theo Walcott (9.0) is edging towards a return in the next few weeks and bearing in mind Arsenal play just two of last term’s top eight in the next nine Gameweeks, there’s still plenty of points potential on offer at the Emirates.

Cambiasso Boost for Foxes

The Argentine midfielder recovered from a knock that kept him out of the weekend draw against Burnley and played the full 90 minutes in a 3-2 reserve team win over Aston Villa yesterday.

The Scout Says: Cambiasso’s absence against The Clarets persuaded Nigel Pearson to shift from 4-3-3 to a 4-4-2, with Dean Hammond and Danny Drinkwater handed the central midfield berths. With the South American back on board, though, his manager now faces a dilemma after wide men Riyad Mahrez and Jeffrey Schlupp both scored in the weekend draw. Certainly, Hammond looks the likeliest to make way if Pearson opts for a four-man midfield, though a switch back to three up top would immediately place question marks over Mahrez and Schlupp once again, with Cambiasso looking a certain starter, regardless of formation. The veteran has already scored once in his two starts for The Foxes and, at 5.0 in FPL, has five decent fixtures (new, swa, WBA, SUN, qpr) to stake a claim as a budget contender.

Dann Ruled Out for Eagles

The Palace defender is expected to remain out for three-to-four weeks with the knee injury that saw him stretchered off on 12 minutes at Hull last Saturday. Palace had initially feared Dann would be sidelined for a long-term period but scans have confirmed a far more positive prognosis.

The Scout Says: A month-long absence would forced Dann to miss upcoming showdowns with Chelsea, West Brom, Sunderland and United before returning to host Liverpool in Gameweek 12. Dann has started every league fixture for Neil Warnock and has helped his side register clean sheets in both their home matches under the new manager, though on the road it’s been a different matter, with at least two goals conceded in all of their three away encounters. Brede Hangeland looks the likeliest candidate to deputise, though at 4.9, the former Fulham man is pricier than Martin Kelly (4.5), who has started six of the Eagles’ seven matches so far and looks a far more reliable pick.

Germany Hopeful on Schurrle

The midfielder has been nursing a knock that has forced him to miss training with the German national side for the last two days but reports suggest his country still remain optimistic he’ll be fit to face Poland on Saturday.

The Scout Says: After starting three of the first four Gameweeks, Schurrle looked to have climbed in the Chelsea attacking midfield pecking order before being named as a sub in the subsequent two. Emerging from the bench in Gameweek 5 at City, the German netted his second of the season – equaling Eden Hazard’s tally, despite playing 304 minutes to the Belgian’s 592. Schurrle returned to the first XI for last weekend’s win over Arsenal but with Willian offering strong competition for the role on the right, he’s likely to remain no more than a punt as Jose Mourinho alternates the pair in order to deal with the busy schedule – frustrating for Fantasy managers, given Schurrle’s undoubted eye for goal.

Markovic Pleads for Patience

Liverpool’s summer signing has discussed his start to the season and admitted he’s yet to find his feet on Merseyside.

“You know how things go in football, I’m getting there and adjusting well. It will take a little more time, but, all in all, I feel okay. I feel great there and everybody has been great with me. I could not wish for more. I’m happy and that is the most important thing. My team-mate is the legendary Steven Gerrard, the fans love me and Anfield is great. But, as I said, I just need a little bit more time.”

The Scout Says: Having served up a seven goals and four assists in 49 appearances across all competitions for Benfica last season, it’s fair to say the youngster isn’t renowned as a prolific performer. Indeed, question marks were raised over Brendan Rodgers’ decision to splash the cash in his summer of restructuring and so far, he’s been named in the first XI on just two occasions in a slow start in his new surrounds. With QPR, Hull and Newcastle in the next four, investment in the Reds is picking up pace – both Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson staked a claim by getting amongst the goals last weekend, and with Raheem Sterling looking key for the Merseysiders, Markovic looks poised to continue as an impact sub, with his blistering pace a worthy weapon against tiring backlines late on in matches.

Pardew to Turn to Forgotten Wingers

Alan Pardew is set to reward both Gabriel Obertan and Sammy Ameobi for their impact against Swansea with starts against Leicester in Gameweek 8.

The latter was introduced from the bench at the Liberty Stadium, providing a crucial assist in a 33-minute appearance. Post-match, Pardew revealed his admiration for the player but underlined his frustration with Ameobi to this point:

“We’ve had to have the patience of a saint with Sammy and he’ll admit that. Now we need to see him deliver. The threat to him is still there – this is a big season for him. He did particularly well when he came on at Swansea. He’s someone I’ve spoken about so many times over the past few seasons, talking about his potential. He’s been a young player in the shadow of his brother for a long time. But this is a guy who is quick and has fantastic technical ability – he should be ripping this division up really, but he hasn’t been.”

Meanwhile, Obertan was handed a first start of the season against Swansea and, like Ameobi, provided the ammunition for Papiss Cisse to guide Newcastle to a priceless point. Pardew made it clear that he has recognised a change in the former United winger this term:

“Gabby had a great spell when he first arrived then lost his way a little bit. He’s had to earn the trust of our fans and our staff to get a chance. But this season he looks really focussed. Remember, he’s only a young man and he could be a big player for us this year.”

The Scout Says: Both Ameobi and Obertan are available as 4.4 midfield options and could tempt investment as budget candidates. The latter looks the most secure of the two and, given Pardew’s comments and his decision to drop Remy Cabella to the bench, it’s clear that the Magpies boss is willing to invest in the forgotten winger at a time when his tenure at St James Park remains in doubt. In three appearances so far this term, Obertan has created a goalscoring opportunity every 30.6 minutes – a faster rate than Cabella who has registered 32.9 for the same stat. More significantly, Cabella’s supply has faltered, completing just 13% of his crosses compared to Obertan’s 57%. While Cabella offers a far greater goal threat, it could be that Pardew is looking to rely on Cisse to the get the goals, prioritising a reliable supply to the striker. Obertan could well benefit from that policy, providing Fantasy mangers with another 4.4 midfield starter to rival Burnley’s George Boyd.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    What to do about Arsenal?

Arsenal have great fixtures but are arguably a team in flux. Welbeck's chief provider Ozil is out for at least 10 weeks. The brilliant Sanchez often finds himself benched. Meanwhile Walcott is due to return, but is likely to be eased in. At the back, meanwhile, clean sheets are in short supply and there are plenty of other options in their price range.

Are we safe to swerve Arsenal during their kind fixture run, or is an Arsenal player essential?

Sanchez is the one for me if you could afford him. Welbeck should do ok as well, not particularly sold on him though.

Given the quality of players and the fixtures I think an argument can be made, certainly for Welbeck at a low price.

Im more concerned with whether to keep Di Maria if Im honest.

Like the article said, Sanchez is far less likely to find himself benched now, and there's now Cazorla@8.2m in the hole...very tempting.

I think an Arsenal player is essential, at least one of the midfield options or Welbeck up top...looking at Wilshere or Cazorla if on a budget, but Sanchez is the best option, imo.

Here's a handy table for members to evaluate Arsenal's options:

      Welbeck offers serious value.

Walcott offers explosive returns potentially in a few weeks.

I'm happy enough with Pellè to go without Welbeck for now thou.

There's enough providers at Arsenal that Welbeck will do well, especially with easy fixtures.
It seems crazy to ignore him at that price.

I agree. It's him or Pelle and at the moment I have Pelle and no FT.
Cazorla looks a good differential. Walcott will be an awesome differential when he returns.
Chambers at 4.6 is a bargain, so i'll be holding onto him despite his ban next week.

Sticking with welbeck only. Plan to do welbeck > beranhio (or similar) and mid priced mid > Walcott once Walcott fully back up and running. That won't be for another 3-4 gws at least though.

Tempted by a Wilshere punt, to capitalize on Siggy and move on since his fixtures will take a turn for the worse soon, but his injury record puts me off too, there is also the Ox on the same price bracket but it carries too much uncertainty of starts all in all and since I don´t have Welbeck, will most surely wait on Walcott.

Welbeck and Chambers offer serious value to be worthy of a punt regardless of Arsenal being in flux. I think Arsenal also have enough decent mids to see them through these easy fixtures. Might even be more beneficial with these players fighting for a regular starting spot. Remember when Arsenal would play the young guns in cup matches and they would spank teams for fun? Ox Wilshire and co may get their time to shine now.

At the moment arsenal really only have 5 first choice midfielders/wingers fit:

      Flamini-Wilshere
      Sanchez- Caz- Ox

with podolski, rosicky, diaby, joel campbell not really featuring. I therefore am considering tadic to Ox to fund Moreno to Baines. Ox i think is more secure than Caz when Ramsey returns as he is more comfortable in the 4-1-4-1 formation arsenal have favoured this year. Also offers an potentially explosive differential.

As for Walcott, i think with sanchez and ox providing pace there isn't such a great need to rush him back from such a serious injury. I would guess cameos in 3 gws time and not starting until december. Way too early to bring him in.

Welbeck is amazing value, but as a Pelle owner, I am sticking.

Sanchez is an explosive option, but hasn't yet proved himself to justify his price tag and with other options coming in at cheaper (Fabregas, Hazard, Di Maria, Sterling) it's hard to see many jumping on ship.

Welbeck and Chambers stand out for me, but even with this run of games, i don't think any Arsenal players are 'essential'

I think Welbeck is such an amazing value option as he is essentially a premium striker priced within the mid-price range. The only thing stopping me from getting him at the moment is the fact that I'm still content to stick with Pelle as my 3rd striker at least for this moment.

Sanchez is undoubtedly a quality player, he just needs to find some form. Walcott is coming back from a long-term injury and if anything, history suggests that he will be a great FPL option for us when he is fit. Ramsey sooner or later will come back to the fray as well.

In summary, I think Arsenal has a lot to offer us fantasy managers in the coming weeks. The challenge is simply to identify which one of their players is the best option.

I don't have any Arsenal players and have no plans to get one, though I'm keeping an eye on Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott. Arsenal have a good run of fixtures but seldom take advantage of them these days. This is hard for an Arsenal fan to say, but points is points.

Fábregas' performances always slow down 2nd half of the season (proven in pretty much all of his last 4 or 5 seasons) so he needs to continue with this rate for now that's for sure.

Definitely great value with his consistency and could be madness to remove him but there is also some logic in the decision in the sense that he's not explosive enough so Alexis for example over 3-4 fixtures can outscore him.

Any suggestions on this WC draft with 0.3m itb ?

    Guzan
    Clyne / Bertrand / Baines
    ADM / Sterling / Chadli / Mane
    Aguero / Costa / Welbeck

    (McCarthy / Wisdom / Boyd / Moore)

Another option is Mane & Welbeck -> Siggy & Pelle...gone with Mane as he's a differential whereas evryone has Siggy

Despite the thumpings Villa has received they have looked pretty hard to break down still.. Guzan is decent choice. Probs your best 4.5 GK.

Like the idea of Mane as well. Go for it.. good luck!

    Morning everyone,

Just having a play with my team and realised I can get this for a -4:

    Forster
    Clyne Baines Ivanovic
    ADM Sterling Siggy Downing
    Costa Aguero Welbeck

    McCarthy, Duff, Moore, Boyd

Basically involving Moreno, Fab, Pelle > Baines, Downing, Aguero.

What do you think? Personally I wouldn't transfer out Fab now and Pelle has great fixtures coming up.

    Amazing what TV can do!

Gents, when is the best time to play your wildcard?

When key players are injured/suspended and it's 'essential', or when you see a run of fixtures for 2/3 teams that you like, but don't have the players for?

    1. Pork Pie Sausage Roll
      • 15 Years

Keep it for the FA Cup related DGWs bonanza in the second half of the season imo, only use beforehand if your team is plagued with injuries.

      1. Pasqualinho
        • 16 Years
        11 years, 2 months ago

I think a major fixture shift or about GW4 or 5 (when teams first start getting easier to predict) are the best times to use it. The FA Cup DGW is known well in advance and can be planned for, so your WC team specifically for this week can be achieved by others without a wildcard for a hit - and many can do this for 12 points, often less. WC should be worth more than 12 points, IMO.

          Interesting - thanks.

I've just had a play with my team and think I can get to where I need to be with 2, maybe 3 hits of -4 each week.

Do you think that'd be better than wildcarding?

I'm currently thinking of doing the same...Ars, City & Everton have good fixtures and I dont own any of their players which means I need to make atleast 4-5 transfers

          2. Pasqualinho
            • 16 Years
            11 years, 2 months ago

If you're 6 transfers shy of where you want to be, I'd say you were on the limit of wildcarding. It's very unlikely you'll stick with three weeks of planned transfers - there will always be spanners thrust into the works.

              Cheers.

Yeh, only issue is that I'm not selling because I need to - only that I feel other players will perform better, given their fixtures.

I think that's why there's the doubt - I have wildcarded before, to negative effect!

Well, that's why I always advocate quality over timing for the wildcard. You can play it at the absolute optimum time but it can still be a complete disaster.

                  Absolutely!

What are your best indicators of whether it's the right transfer or not?

Do you go with stats, or gut instinct?

                    11 years, 2 months ago

It's not an easy one to answer. But for me it has to be gut instinct, but with the stats and fixtures to back it up. It has to be based on a popular choice, and importantly a player whose value is going to increase so you are not going to be pressured into taking them out quickly if it doesn't go to plan.

My whole change centres around getting Aguero or ADM into the team. Arguably, that's an error.

But at some point I need to make my own decision, and live or die by it!

Also if you plan to use your WC in DGW by getting max players from those teams then you'll suffer in the following weeks if those players have bad fixtures....you can always plan ur WC with a couple of hits and still get a fair number of DGW players in ur team

And then I think it comes down to what you value more or what represents the best "talent". Is it the ability to do magical things with the ball like Ronaldinho or the consistency? For me, I've never seen a player do what Ronaldinho did (and still does) but from a practical point I can understand that Ronaldo and Messi are more consistent for their teams.

Point being that Ronaldinho's tricks often served a purpose other than being flash, which was the sole aim of Ronaldo's tricks. Ronaldiinho actually used them to serve a function and never slowed down the team by doing so.

If you were take a moment in football, the greatest player of all time was Ronaldinho in his pomp. He was doing things than no other player could do, his athleticism, creativity and technique were unmatched in the game, and remain so.

If we are talking about the greatest player of all time though, we really need to consider a career span of about 10 years or so. In that respect, Messi is the greatest, but Ronaldo could surpass him if he maintains this current form for a few more years.

Messi had Ronaldo for years, and the tables have only recently turned. I think Messi's career to date, and all the records he smashed along the way stand testament to him being the greatest - but like I said, Ronaldo is certainly pushing him and currently the better player.

All that said, nobody has mentioned a certain Charles N'Zogbia yet...

And I suppose that's how I judge it in some ways, what player was the best when all 3 were at the very top of their game? For me, Ronaldinho.

Career wise I definitely agree with you, I have a suspicion that the old injuries and medical condition are catching up with Messi, I may be entirely wrong on that front. Ronaldo is a true athlete and is in great shape, Messi is younger than him but comparing fitness we may see Ronaldo maintain his playing level longer than Messi can (which is unfortunate of course).

I'm still waiting on Boselli to be thrown into the discussion 😉

    Clyne, Chambers, Naylor, Moore, Duff
Di Maria, Fabregas, Sterling, Siggy, Boyd
    Aguero, Costa, Pelle

    2FT, 0.8 in bank

    A) Duff & Naylor ---> Rose & Hutton

    B) Fabregas, Naylor, Chambers ---> Chadli, Baines, Azpilicueta (-4)

Ozil out, Ramsey out (potentially for a long time), Wally starting his comeback but will take some time, Arteta out, Debuchy out, Chmabers banned (only one game mind), Giroud out.

Arsenal are in for a tough one. They have supposedly easy fixtures so good to see how many points they take from them compared to someone like United who had a number of injuries and easy fixtures as well.

Which is better for next GW ?

    A- Moreno + Ulloa > Baines + Cisse

    B- Moreno > Baines

    C- Ulloa > Welbeck

    D- Moreno + Ulloa > Jagielka + Welbeck

so all this talk about people dropping fabregas to accommodate kun and baines.

it is a no brainer for me.

Fabregas' current assist rate will see have him 38 assists at the end of the season. We all know he won't come near that. So despite this enormous amount of assists, he is still only ranked 4th in the mids, only ahead of out of form sterling by 1pt. Of course, "only" ranked 4th may sound a bit funny but we should be expecting a regress in his scoring due to his current number of assists which will see him look like terrible value compared to the likes of Siggy and Chadli.

So FFS, which 2 do you pick from Kun, Baines and Fabs?

    I know who i prefer,

I think dropping an expensive mid is stupid, because there's so many good ones. Makes more sense to stop obsessing over Aguero.

there are good mid priced mids aswell. chadli is outscoring fabs and didnt even play in gw1.

        downing only 4pts behind fabs.

infact, i think there are fairly few good expensive mids, bar ADM, Haz, Sterling, Sanchez. only ADM and Sterling are justiftying their price currently

He is still scoring well fpl wise despite not playing particularly well.

He's only ranked 4th but he's consistent. The same mightnt be said of Siggy Di Maria and Chadli in a few weeks time. Siggy and Chadli could be seen as over performing aswell and ADM could be an explosive flash in the pan.

The key thing is though Fabs almost 0 goal threat. If he stays deep and doesnt shoot, he's definitely worth the boot. But if he starts to push forward ...

I think it's about a balance. You should have one or two consistent performers there as well as the explosive ones just in case you have a bad week, they're small but consistent points may prove huge in protecting your rank.

          That could work I guess.

I see most potential in Welbeck given his fixtures. Fabregas has some tough ones coming up, but then again Chelsea seem unstoppable.

It boils down to Mane vs. Naismith. Mane has nice fixtures but is new to the club and league, however saw the first match and he was class, as well as at Salzburg before.

Naismith is reliable and their fixtures turn great, but my feeling is that his place isn't 100% guaranteed.

I guess B seems better from this perspective, but you can't really go bad with either choice.

agree with your point that Naismith might be rotated with Eto'o & Kone (also fit now) and Barkley returning...Also another reason to go with Mane is he's always looking to shoot and looking at his past record its a good indication of some points coming my way and moreover B allows me to have an Ars cover as well

Welbeck could be a really good choice as well, the hattrick midweek and if he scores another one against San Marino, he could really up his confidence, which could boost him.

                      That's quite a nice team.

Wouldn't really change much about it to be honest, maybe Ulloa, depends on your bench again.

                      Mine is currently

                      Krul (Foster)

                      Baines, Janmaat, Collocini, Clyne, Duff

Fabregas, Di Maria, Siggurdsson, Sterling and Downing

                      Welbeck, Costa and Pelle.

Still have some problems with defense (unwisely trusted Newcastle) and after my 2 FTs a benching problem this week, but I plan to solve that one in a GW or two.

but that defence is good for the next gw but then you need to get rid of New defenders
I'd like to WC my above team as I had a terrible last month and am some 40 points behind the leader in my ML

                        Guzan
                        Clyne / Baines / Bertrand
                        ADM / Sterling / Chadli / Mane
                        Costa / Aguero / Welbeck
                        (McCarthy / Wisdom / Boyd / Moore)

The wildcard team looks quite good.

Personally I am still not fully sold on Chaldi, but the rest of the team looks good.

I still think that your original team could get points this week, but I understand getting Aguero in, he will produce for sure (if not injured).
