Yesterday we rolled out the first installment of our weekly perusal of the fixture list, shining the spotlight on those teams with the easiest opponents over the next four-to-six Gameweeks. Today we turn the tables and expose their luckless brethren with poor looking schedules to follow. We see that Man United’s easy ride has come to an end, while a raft of mid-priced assets from the likes of Swansea and Sunderland could struggle to maintain their Fantasy value.

Man United

“frisking

After an uncomfortable night at The Hawthorns on Monday, Louis van Gaal’s side now face a much sterner test over the next four weeks – a home match against Chelsea is followed by trips to Man City and Arsenal before the fixtures take a turn for the better.

Certainly, anyone who has gambled on the United defence so far needs no persuasion from the fixtures to abandon ship, though Angel Di Maria is an altogether different proposition. Three goals and four assists in six Gameweeks tells a Fantasy fairy-tale, but after limping off against the Baggies to have his thigh packed in ice, we’re yet to hear a prognosis from Old Trafford, with his owners facing a real conundrum. Further up the field, Wayne Rooney sits out the final match of his suspension this week but again, once he’s back the fixtures don’t look ripe for investment. Robin Van Persie looks horribly out of form anyway, while Radamel Falcao owners will be looking for an exit route if Van Gaal continues with the 4-2-3-1 set-up which saw the Colombian afforded just 19 minutes off the bench against the Baggies.

Swansea

“frisking

In spite of some favourable recent fixtures, the Swans have now failed to win in any of the last five Gameweeks. After this week’s home clash with Leicester, the going gets tougher for a while, with three back-to-back fixtures against Everton, Arsenal and Man City looking a real test of their credentials.

With three clean sheets and an assist, Neil Taylor has been good value but these fixtures may cause some owners to consider their options. In midfield, Gylfi Sigurdsson has been extraordinary value but the popular Icelander – who has now blanked in four of the last five – may find himself shedding owners after this week has passed. Wilfried Bony, on the other hand, is on the up with goals in each of the last two and, in contrast to his team-mate, showed himself quite capable of scoring against all-comers last season. Even so, the wise path may still be to wait out these tough opponents before hitching one’s fortunes to the Ivorian’s wagon.

QPR

“frisking

Rooted to the bottom of the table after conceding at least twice in six of the last seven Gameweeks, Fantasy interest could barely be any lower in Harry Redknapp’s basement-dwellers, with only Steven Caulker finding a place in over 5% of FPL sides.

With the R’s now set to face Chelsea and City in the next three matches, the omens don’t look good and with playmaker Joey Barton and the likes of Jordon Mutch still injured in midfield, there’s little to suggest a turnaround could be on the cards. Eduardo Vargas’ brace off the bench against Liverpool may have caught the eye but realistically, few, if any, will be paying 6.4 for a QPR forward at a time when so many budget forwards are firing on all cylinders.

BE WARY OF

Sunderland
Recipients of a thoroughly humiliating thrashing from Southampton, the Black Cats could scarcely have picked a worse time to lose form as the next six Gameweeks hold some nasty looking home encounters with Arsenal, Everton, Chelsea and Man City. Such fixtures mean that it is probably time to part company with the likes of Patrick Van Aanholt and John O’Shea, whilst Vito Mannone owners will be also mulling over a transfer out, in spite of his security of save points. In terms of attackers, Steven Fletcher and Connor Wickham had started to show glimpses of form but these fixtures will deter all but the most optimistic investment.

Crystal Palace
All things considered, The Eagles have fared surprisingly well under Neil Warnock. They could do with a few more points on the board, though, and while there are a few opportunities to do so, the next four Gameweeks contain a trip to Old Trafford and the visit of Liverpool, which make investment in this team somewhat fraught. Robbed of their chief allure – clean sheets – by the departure of Tony Pulis, the defence hasn’t been as porous as some had feared but managers would be wise to wait a few weeks before investing in Julian Speroni or Martin Kelly, whilst Jason Puncheon’s goal scoring seems to have dried up for the time being. Fraizer Campbell, on the other hand ,has quietly racked up three goals in four appearances to make a mockery of his budget price tag, but that rate will surely slow down in the face of tougher opposition.

West Ham
Sam Allardyce’s side have been something of a revelation this season. The Hammers’ handful of new signings have helped deliver their manager’s promise of more attractive, attacking football and the impressive results see them sitting fourth in the league. In truth, their long term fixtures are excellent, but there are a couple of upcoming flies in the ointment which may deter immediate investment, as they host Man City this weekend and roll up to Goodison a few weeks later. It may be best to hold fire on the likes of Adrian and James Tomkins – providing he recovers from a groin problem – for their likely clean sheets, then, whilst Stewart Downing and Diafra Sakho’s appeal will surely be on the rise before long.

Everton will be a lot better defensively with Coleman back too.

      Howard/Lloris + Chadli.

      here's a stat for you:

Everton have conceded 13 goals in 4 games that Distin played in, and only 3 in 4 that he didn't. (Fixtures are relatively balanced)

With Stones out and Alcaraz helping them to a CS vs Villa i think he's pretty nailed on for now

A - I thinks it's a fine move, but a game with QPR in mind. I hope Ivanovic to have more chances to get forwards and attacks.

B - I think Sterling has fixtures. But Liverpool looked really in bad form.

    REPOST FROM PRIOR PAGE:

Some insights for fantasy managers on Arsenal's game against Anderlecht (from an Arsenal fan that sat through the game):

    1) Arsenal had a fair bit of possession but lacked penetration. Arsenal probably didn't deserve to win the game and looked laboured for at least 80 minutes. Anderlecht lost concentration in the last few minutes and were unlucky to concede two goals at the death

    2) Welbeck looked off the pace (maybe fatigue setting in - he's played a lot of games since he arrived)

    3) Alexis was at the heart of most good things that Arsenal did and looked to be the best player on the pitch by a mile. He essentially had an assist on the winning goal. He does hang on to the ball a little too long at times and he seems to get through a ton of running and work throughout games (including tracking back). He may need a rest from time to time as a result but he's easily been Arsenal's best player of the season and wow is he ever good!

    4) Cazorla was played on the left wing in this game (unlike the last few games he's started where he's played centrally). He looked poor tonight and it's possible he may be dropped this weekend (or moved back centrally)

    5) Ramsey got through the full 90 minutes but generally looked well off the pace (similar to most of his team-mates). He did get into a decent shooting position once during the match, but scuffed his shot horribly. He looked off the pace before his injury (I transferred him out of my team before his injury as a result of this) and he looks some way off from recapturing his form of last season. I'd caution managers to give it a few weeks and monitor him closely if they are considering bringing him back in right away.

    6) Arsenal's defense continues to be an absolute shambles and Arsenal was extremely lucky not to concede more goals after Anderlecht scored their first goal. They were reasonably solid before then but completely lost their way after Anderlecht scored. They played Monreal at centre back and Chambers at right back. Chambers struggled defensively throughout the game and was beaten easily by his man on quite a few occasions. He was also very lucky not to get booked (as he has been numerous times this season). He did however pick up an assist for Gibbs' goal but was probably the first time I remember him crossing all match. Gibbs took his goal very well, but I'd caution against reading too much into that. I believe he scored 1 goal last season and has struggled with injuries for a number of seasons now.

    7) Theo Walcott did not make the trip to Belgium - likely given time to build up more fitness during the week. I'd suspect we may see him on the bench this weekend - but again, it may be some time before he gets up to speed.

Hope this is helpful and let me know if anyone has any other questions on Arsenal...

    =========

    Arsenal Player Recommendations:

    1) Highly Recommended: Sanchez & Welbeck (I've looked at Arsenal's fixtures and they have a one week break between GWs 9 & 10 and between GWs 11& 12 - so I'm less worried about fatigue/rotation)

    2) Recommended: Chambers - he's outstanding value for an "elite team" defender and pretty much nailed on until January. He got an assist in the Champions League game and has taken a couple of decent shots on goal, but is liable to pick up more bookings and may have a 2 game suspension for 10 yellows after a couple of months if he keeps picking them up at the same rate

    3) Punt: Ox/Cazorla/Gibbs - Less security of starts for Cazorla & Ox (esp. Ox) and form fluctuates. Both can come good though, injuries mean they will be in or very close to starting line-up and fixtures are great. Gibbs will be first choice when he's fit, but has had struggles with injuries and doesn't have the consistent attacking output an "elite-team" full-back should

    4) Wait & Monitor: Ramsey and Theo - Ramsey looks off-form at the moment so watch him for a couple of weeks; a couple of weeks as well before Theo's consistently in the starting line-up

Good post. Thanks very much for the details.

I was quite impressed with Sanchez, but he did so much job as you said.
AW might need to save him if situation allowed.

A bit worried with Welbeck though as Arsenal will play on Saturday again.

Still 50:50 for Chambers for me. He seems not good enough, but cheap enough though.

Good points. My sense is that Welbeck will get the start again because Arsenal don't have a good enough option to replace him, as well as the fact that Arsenal get a week break after the Sunderland game. As for Chambers, if you want to buy into the Arsenal defense for their great run of fixtures, I think he's the best bet, and as you imply - great value for money.

Boyd would be my choice. Or perhaps even Albrighton if he maintains a spot. Anything more expensive would be a waste of money, plus your defence will suffer. Even with Boyd, your defence probably looks a bit ropey 🙂

Just checking out midfielder stats, mostly around goal attemps, touches in final third, touches in pen box.

Of just these 3 stat criteria, which do you feel is the most important for a goal scoring midfielder?

    1. Gunner HitIT

      goal attempts

Shots in the box mainly with touches in the box as a reference. May as well throw shots on target in there as well.

Haven't checked Hazards stats in that regard, but I feel an explosion is not far away. He will be a great captains choice for QPR

My guts telling me Hazard too, hence pulled up to see if stats back it up. Abit disconcerting but with Hazard, it's all about timing based on past experience. Still a quality player just yet to deliver.

You are right, have to be patient with him, I have has him since GW2 but seeing Cesc rack up the assists and increase in price to pretty much the same level - it's taken a lot of willpower not to sell him. I think what has stopped me is the fact that Hazard has much better potential to shoot you up the rankings.

I didn't start the season with Cesc either and have held off him til now, but at current prices i'm leaning toward Hazard between the 2.

And i've just seen your rank 😯 well done RD! Congrats on the great wildcard. just 31 spots for Hazard to shoot you up!

Thanks Shifty, much appreciated. Although I only made 5 changes and kept the midfield the same, I picked the right week to play it, that's for sure. 🙂

Quality over quantity I say. A friend of mine played his wildcard and scored 43 when his pre WC team scored 110. Madness. Not a very good player though.

Btw, thinking of Hazard/Sanchez for my transfer, but Sterling would have to give way on current team form. Thoughts?

Good question. I see Rodgers played Sterling 90 mins last night, despite the game being lost. It wouldn't surprise me if he was rested at the weekend. In which case I would be looking to move Sterling on for either Eriksen or Sanchez.

To be honest, I don't think you can go wrong with either, but would probably plump for Sanchez in your position. Although Arsenal are not playing well, Sanchez is, and he is also bringing home the points. Hazard is playing well, but isn't bringing them home.

Thanks, valid points. Like the look of Sanchez but seems pretty pricey to me. Would also mean using both of my frees to get him in.

If you have to downgrade one MF make 0.9m and fund Moreno -> Baines, who would you sacrifice?

Siggy ->> 5.5m left .. Diame springs to mind.
Fab ->> 8.4m left .. Oscar is any good?
    Sterling ->> 7.8m left .. Eriksen exactly.
Di Maria ->> 9.0m left .. A bit more choices.

Base on current transfers, I think Baines could rise 0.1m more by the deadline.

        That 0.1 might change things.

Considering selling Sterling myself. He's a fantastic FPL option but based on current team form plus how they're set up to play without Sturridge, Sterling isn't getting the space to run in behind defenders which is where the bulk of his goals came from last season. The things holding me back are 1) ownership, 2) fixtures.

      1. Valar(Keith)
        • 16 Years

Sterling played as long striker yesterday 2nd half.. if that trend continues until Sturridge is fit i'd really back him to score well

I very much doubt Sterling will play striker this weekend. It was just tactical for the 2nd half. And he was pretty useless as striker tbh. Wouldn't get too excited about his OOP prospects

Are ppl getting rid of Adm even if fit? fixtures may be poor but manu dont have a problem scoring goals and he is on every set piece and their main threat from open play. was supposed to get rid but cant bring myself to do it.. a manchester derby and arsenal away not so bad as far as attackin returns are concerned. and they have 3 juicy home games(and a 4th home game.. albeit it is chelsea and that will be tough)

just watching United games alone, you'll know AdM is central to everything they do. Wouldn't do it if I were you. United are still scoring goals. It's their defense that's hurting them.
