Robin Van Persie is at the centre of another injury scare on the eve of the season after suffering an ankle knock against Benfica on Saturday.

The Dutchman was forced off the field in the first-half of the 2-1 defeat having given the Gunners the lead with a clinical finish from Kieran Gibbs’ cut-back.

Following the goal, Van Persie suffered a knock on the ankle following a clumsy challenge – the striker played on but was withdrawn at half-time with Marouane Chamakh seeing action.

The extent of Van Persie’s problem remains unclear, Wenger gave us this vague summary in his post-match comments…

“It is an ankle problem, I don’t know how bad it is.”

We will presumably learn more on the “problem” over the next few days and Fantasy managers will be hoping for some clarity from the Arsenal camp prior to Saturday’s squad selection deadline.

Arsenal also suffered further setbacks on the day with both Gibbs and Thomas Vermaelen suffering thigh and back injuries respectively.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

                  interesting quote on sturridge:
He has been showing his qualities in the club and we will count on him for this season in a different perspective than before.'

Interesting, if Alex were to leave and Luiz is currently injured that'd almost certainly mean Ivanovich in the centre and Bosingwa playing for a tasty £5.5m

Yeah it's a few too many "IFs"

I can't understand why they'd sell quality cover like Alex AND Zhirkov after a season where they had a defencive emergeny for weeks.

Luiz is a bad defender, Rajkovic may well be Alex's replacement if he gets a work permit, and if Bosingwa starts then he is going to shoot up in price very quickly so you should get him now while he's cheap.

bit harsh on luiz. he was the portuguese league's player of the season 2 years ago as a defender, always hard to win those awards for defenders. a bad first 10 mins v man utd and 1 rash challende v fulham and he's a bad defender suddenly? not for me

He was an attacking defender, he won plaudits for his attacking in Portugal and was suspect in defence, also, defending is much harder here. You forgot his mistake at Stoke that cost us a goal. Anytime he's played well for us its in an attacking sense, and his defensive displays have been lacking. Just because all you've seen of him is his first ten minutes against Man Utd and a rash challenge against Fulham doesnt mean that's all he's done, everytime hes played in defence hes been good with the ball at his feet and going forward but not defending. And his performance against Man U away should be enough to convince you of that, he was awful. I think we should have sold him to Barcelona when they wanted him. I cant see what he offers apart from inconsistency, an immature attitude and sudden moments of brilliance, we need more than that. Maybe he'll improve in the future, but right now I get scared when he plays in our back four.

      Good team.

I'd have Wilkinson, Orr and Simpson over those first 3 defenders, Malouda over Fat Frank and Taarabt/Sinclair just about edging O'Hara but they're all debatable. I'd also have Suarez over Carroll and Holt over Graham.

      I say 'I would', I actually do.

Here is my "Cheap as Chips" team.

They all could do well and have low ownership, so if they actually do well then they could rocket in value very quickly in the first two gameweeks.

    Kenny 4.5 Al-Habsi 4.5

    Hughes 5.0 Olsson 4.5 Wheater 4.5 Gorkss 4.5 Woodgate 4.5

    Lucas 5.0 Dobbie 5.0 Dyer 4.5 Pratley 5.5 Moses 5.0

    Hoilett 6.0 Doyle 6.0 Holt 5.5

25.5M in the bank. Probably a lot more after GW2.

So then I wildcard after GW2.

    It's a risk, I know. But it's also a strategy with massive differentials. 🙂

Not a terrible side given the money (not) spent!

One thing I'd be worried about is that for GKs and DEFs to score points, and thus make them attractive transfer targets for other FPL managers, they have to get clean sheets, and I don't see too many clean sheets for a few of them lads early doors.

Surely the players you get in with your wildcard will be the form players and therefor the players most prone to a price hike, factor in that you'll only get half on the sell on and I can't see it working :/

            I humbly disagree, Bod.

The players I picked (and admittedly I could do some more research on this) have very low ownership. And you know what happens after the first gameweek: everyone wants the top scoring big names. So my pathetic little no-names will be transferred in like crazy as people try save money and shoehorn the big players into their teams. Meaning my players' value rocket whilst the big guns go up by 0.1 if they're lucky so don't actually increase team value because of the 50% sell on rule.

This is making more and more sense to me as I think about it more. 🙂

                  (a) I could do a much better team than that for the money

                  (b) The first players getting sold heavily will be expensive players who flop...their replacements won't be dirt-cheap

                  (c) Brilliant idea though...brilliant and useless but it gave me a laugh and I'm guessing you'll go far in some creative occupation so long as you're never in overall charge of anything

                    a) you just don't get the concept of "Strategy".
                    b) much easier to get value increase from low owned players.
                    c) see above.

Cheers. Now looking at leaving N'Zog out for GW1 as I'm not sure if he'll start (being new to the club and all) and Fulham away isn't a great fixture. How about this?

          Given, Ruddy
Kompany, Cashley, Orr, (S Taylor,) (N Taylor)
          Malouda, Silva, Taarabt, Moses, (Sessegnon)
          Drogba, Carroll, Rodallega

GW2: Silva -> N'Zog to create funds to bring RVP back when fit (probably in GW4)

It's a tough call at 6.5 as there's a decent selection, all of which could do well so hard to say who is best.

As for Sess - look at the pre-season form guide and last season's watchlist. He's thought o be playing a very forward role again.

I mean I have 6.5 budget for my 4th or 5th mid... I have already had Taarabt and Sinclair...any idea? I like Wilshere but he play deep role... Etherington or Sesseg, Barton? Or just buy Ferguson (4) and improve Taarabt or Sinclair?

A Sunderland boy might be a decent shout, my initial thought is Bardsley, however his position seems to be under threat so Oshea I guess. Enrique if he moves to Liverpool, nelsen has decent fixtures at Blackburn, Perhaps you Could stretch to Dunne if you font have Given already

Downgrade your defence. Logic being midfielders and strikers are more likely to notch up bonus points and prove better captain choices.

United have some tough fixtures coming up. I'd take out Vidic and swap him for a 4.0/4.5, then upgrade to Silva.

Odemwingie is a poor choice for the first 2 games. Get Rodallega and upgrade the midfield some more.

You could be right but I'd lean the other way. Wigan are poor and Roda can't hit a barn door. They'll be even worse after losing their best player.
Personally I don't expect many goals in the opening three and couldn't pick the results with confidence.

Yeah, Wigan are pretty average at best, although they finished last season strong and have arguably the easiest first 3 games in the league. Rod is completely selfish - he had the 2nd most shots out of all players in the league last year, so he will at least have a go. Also, not sure whether Holt will cut it in the top flight yet... I'd rather N'Zog over Taarabt, but my GW2 transfer will bring him in...

Enrique to L'pool would require a slight reshuffle....

Odemwingies first two fixtures are pretty poor, I'd go Rodallega then upgrade in two weeks (in fact I am)

Bards eye position may be under threat from Richardson, Oshea may be safer, Enrique isn't worth the money tbh, pools fixtures arent amazing and you'll play ivanovo h and Kompany most weeks and then Hughes and Oshea rotate perfectly so you can probably go for a dirt cheapie like Simpson or Orr etc

Suarez a doubt too but all in all only minor issues
