Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – Giroud Back in Training for Gunners

Olivier Giroud returns to training for Arsenal. Chelsea expect Cesc Fabregas to be fit for the Gameweek 12 clash with West Brom. Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge hand Swansea a fitness boost, Ryan Taylor bags a brace for Newcastle’s reserves, whilst Danny Ings is at the double for England Under 21s.

GIROUD CLOSE TO GUNNERS RETURN

Olivier Giroud has returned to full training with Arsenal after recovering from the ankle injury he sustained against Everton in Gameweek 2. However, Mesut Ozil has now revealed that he is likely to be out until the New Year with a knee injury, contrary to initial reports that the German would only be missing for around ten weeks after suffering the rupture against Chelsea in early October.

The Scout Says: Whilst the news surrounding Ozil had looked set to diminish managers’ fears of rotation in the Gunners’ midfield, Giroud’s return now throws a spanner in the works. Given the form of Alexis Sanchez, Wenger seems unlikely to shift the Chilean out of a central berth right now and a spot up front for Giroud would raise real concerns over Danny Welbeck’s role. Arsene Wenger has previously talked up the former United man’s ability to play out wide, and his flexibility could indeed save him from dropping out of the starting XI if Wenger sticks with a 4-4-2 set up, though with Theo Walcott also back from injury, Welbeck could face a tough task of retaining his starting berth once Giroud gets himself up to full match sharpness.

CHELSEA CONFIDENT ON CESC RECOVERY

Chelsea have confirmed that Cesc Fabregas is likely to be fit in for their clash with West Brom in Gameweek 12 after the midfielder withdrew from the Spanish national side’s squad earlier this week with a hamstring complaint.

The Scout Says: Since news of his withdrawal emerged a few days ago, Fabregas has lost significant ownership for the first time this term, with 35,000 managers having finding a quick exit route. Yesterday’s news should see that trend slow, however, with the Spaniard’s consistency of returns so far this season enough to ensure that most will now be happy to hold. Nonetheless, Fabregas is currently balanced on the suspension tightrope with four yellow cards to date, and with team-mate Eden Hazard grabbing double figures in each of his last two home appearances, managers currently in the market for Chelsea midfield coverage ahead of their enticing upcoming schedule (WBA, sun, TOT, new, HUL) are unlikely to look past the 10.0 valued Belgian.

ENRIQUE NEARS REDS COMEBACK

Full back Jose Enrique is back in training after missing Liverpool’s last two league fixtures with a knee problem.

The Scout Says: Having only made one start so far this campaign, Enrique is unlikely to oust Alberto Moreno from the left back berth when the Reds travel to Crystal Palace in Gameweek 12. Moreno has earned bonus points on both occasions he’s collected a clean sheet this season, and with Palace having only struck once in their last two fixtures, the defender could be set for further returns next weekend. Liverpool have only managed one shutout in their previous seven, but boast a decent impending schedule (cpl, STO, lei, SUN) and managers willing to gamble on their backline will surely be eyeing up Moreno as their preferred option.

WIDE MEN On COURSE FOR SWANS RETURN

Wingers Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge are both expected to be fit for Swansea’s trip to Man City next weekend after recovering from groin strains, though the Welsh outfit have ruled out centre back Federico Fernandez for up to three weeks with a calf complaint.

The Scout Says: With Dyer and Routledge back in the fold, Swans’ boss Gary Monk is posed a selection headache over the coming weeks. Jefferson Montero’s run of form since securing a starting spot in Gameweek 9 should see the Ecuadorian immune from rotation for the time being, meaning that the returning duo could battle it out for role on the opposite flank. With that in mind, Montero, who has acquired an assist in two of his three starts, looks the best bet for those seeking an alternative to Gylfi Sigurdsson in the Swans’ midfield ahead of a favourable run of fixtures from Gameweek 13 onwards (CPL, QPR, whm, TOT, hul, AVL). Meanwhile, with Fernandez out of action, Kyle Bartley could be set to get the nod again for the City clash after being selected over Jordi Amat to play alongside Ashley Williams at the back against Arsenal. At 3.9, the former Gunner could be a steal if he can claim a regular role in a side who have tallied five clean sheets already this season.

TAYLOR IMPRESSES FOR MAGPIES’ RESERVES

Defender Ryan Taylor bagged a brace in Newcastle Under-21’s 2-1 win over Stoke yesterday, the second goal a curled free kick to put his side into the lead.

The Scout Says: Handed his first appearance of the season off the bench against West Brom last weekend following a long injury lay-off, Taylor will be hoping to finally contend for a starting role for the Magpies. With Paul Dummett shifted to centre back last time out, Alan Pardew could opt to utilise Taylor at left back, or he may even choose to move him on to the flank in light of their current injury problems in that area. Such out of position prospects would see Taylor move swiftly onto our radars, with his dead-ball ability a real weapon in his armoury. With clean sheets in three of their last four, and the fixture list currently on their side (QPR, whm, bur), many are considering the Magpies’ defensive assets right now, and Taylor could well emerge as the standout option amongst their ranks if he can force his way into Alan Pardew’s plans.

INGS ON TARGET FOR ENGLAND

Burnley’s Danny Ings notched twice yesterday as England Under-21s ran out 3-1 winners over Portugal in their friendly encounter at Turf Moor last night.

The Scout Says: As our recent KPI article highlighted, Ings’ form over the last four Gameweeks has warranted attention, though the striker sits in just 0.5% of teams at this moment in time. Despite scoring just once over that period, the Burnley man has registered 12 shots from inside the box and maintaining that form looks key to the Claret’s chances of staying up come the end of the season. The striker’s confidence will certainly be up after last night’s showing, but at 5.7, Ings still needs to do more before we can really consider him alongside Charlie Austin, Diafra Sakho and co. in the budget forward listings. With Stoke, Villa, Newcastle and QPR in the next four, though, he may yet find himself on our radars.

Mirallas Back in Toffees Training

Roberto Martinez confirmed the Belgian stepped up his recovery from a hamstring injury by returning to training yesterday, though the Everton official website confirmed their manager gave no indication when he expects to see the Belgian back in action.

The Scout Says: With two goals in the opening six Gameweeks, Mirallas had made a decent start to the season before sustaining the injury during the Merseyside derby at Anfield. Bearing in mind only one other Everton midfielder – Aiden McGeady, with a single strike – has found the net this term, Mirallas’ eye for goal has been a big miss for Martinez’ side. Granted, the Everton boss has a number of options out wide to cover for Mirallas and even trialled Ross Barkley on the flank last time around against Sunderland but, once fit, Mirallas looks poised for a first-team return – at 7.2, he’s a relatively budget-friendly option for those willing to accept Martinez’ occasional rotation in the final third.

You'd think there'd be some rotation there especially as Walcott is fit too.

Why would you move your best player (Sanchez) out of the position he currently has. Wenger has said this so it's a matter of everyone else fitting in around Sanchez. You always play your best player in his best position.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Cheaper alternatives to Sanchez

With Giroud back in training and Walcott on the brink of regular first team action are credible cheaper alternatives to Sanchez emerging? Clearly Welbeck has not been up to the job of providing realistic cover in the Arsenal attack. Could Walcott and Giroud be the answer those looking to save their pennies are looking for? Or does a stronger Arsenal mean that Sanchez will bring in even more goals and assists.

Doesn´t make sense to look for cheaper now as Sanchez is worth his value atm, but the only one I can see topping his scores is Walcott.

Sanchez is a cut above the rest. I just feel that a you'll get what you pay for. Giroud is always patchy and Walcott's always injured. Ramsey is an option but he's prone to injury and hasn't looked the same recently.

Walcott is the only one really who can get close to how he has been scoring. Remains to be seen if Sanchez can keep up that kind of scoring. I think theres the possibility of a case for having both though.

Are you trusting much in Arsenal attack? A combo with 2 of Sánchez/Walcott/Ramsey takes 18/20 mil off your team, isn´t that too much spent on midfield meaning you have to leave out Fab/ADM/Haz/Sterling? Or you considering one of Welbeck/Giroud?

I agree. I have two at the minute anyway - unless the extra options introduce rotation problems then I'll happily keep that level of Arsenal attack (form/fixtures depending, obviously)

Will be aiming to get Walcott in soon.... possibly after intl break. I think he can make a real impact immediately and if I go with the gut and he hauls I'll be ahead of the curve.

Would be a Fab > Walcott move, and I already have Sanchez.

      Think its a good idea?

Only question around Sanchez will be if Ozil comes back into the hole. I presume we could see Sanchez left and Ozil centrally. But if Wenger has any sense, he'll keep Ozil out of the team rather than sacrificing his best player's best position.

There is no alternative to Sanchez right now. I'm blown away by the number who continue to overlook him. A free scoring midfielder is probably the greatest asset in the game. Think how well the likes of Ronaldo, Lampard, et al have outperformed players from any other position.

If Sanchez was classified as a striker in FPL like he is Champs league and World Cup fantasy games then I would guess a lot of people would have him. The fact he is classified as a midfielder makes him near enough the first name on my team.

If you mean, you are looking for a differential in Arsenal line up.
I'd suggest Fit again Giroud at mere 8.2 is a great value.

Arsenal has too many options in MF and with coming December there will be more rotation.

They only have Giroud & welbeck upfront ...

Welbeck has proven nothing and Giroud is proven goal scorer + wenger loves him 😉

Walcotts the only one I feel has the potential. Right now I'd think you'd be mad to go without Sanchez and still expect Arsenal to do well. Maybe Giroud at 8.2m might be an option later but he's no Sanchez.

      no such thing as "cover".

If a player scores, you should own him.

If Walcott starts scoring, without taking away from Sanchez...then selling Sanchez makes no sense.

    Fab. ADM. Tadic. Downing. Marney.
    Aguero. Welbeck. Pelle.

Which of the two is more essential right now looking ahead?

    (B) Welbz Fab & Clyne »»» Costa Siggy/Chadli & $4.8 def maybe Yun.
If I do B I plan to swap ADM »» Sanchez the following week as I think it would be silly to sell ADM before his two plum home fixtures.

I wouldn't worry about Sanchez. He's had his explosion and he's not likely to replicate that next four weeks again. We missed out, we've taken our medicine and you've still risen impressively. Plan for the future now, getting Costa in is more important.

Hutton, Baines, Berty, Wisdom, Dummett. There should probably be a CHS defender in there but this isn't the year of expensive defenders.

I submitted a community article looking at how the "relegation fodder"(Villa/QPR/Burnley/Sun/Hull) did last year over the Festive Season.

Qpr/Burnley based on the last time they were in the PL of course. There were some "surprise" results, but overall they could only manage 11 CS from 48 games.

Afternoon all, either of these stand out this week?

    A) Albrighton -> Isgrove (avoids wasting the transfer and banks 0.1m)

    B) Hutton & Pelle -> Terry/Azpil & Austin

Swaying towards A) at the moment as this still leaves the door open for a Chadli upgrade next week (Sterling/Walcott/ADM the likely candidates) via a Pelle downgrade. Then again, a CHE defender looks a good play too with their upcoming run....

    Bank 0.0m, 2 freebies

    Krul, Elliot
    Baines, Chambers, Wisdom, Hutton, Yun
    Sanchez, Hazard, Siggy, Chadli, Albrighton

I don't think selling Pelle this week is a good idea, especially when you already have Kun and Costa. Your team is pretty much sorted so using two FTs not worth it.

        Cheers.

You think it's worth keeping Chambers with those fixtures? A switch to Naylor might not be a bad move with SWA's next couple of fixtures after this week!

          I never facy Chambers.
Yes, I am thinking A Swan Def is a must.. But Naylor is on 4 yellow and need to be cautious with him.
For me I am on WC and surely having FAB as Swan Goal Keeper. Naylor is also a cheaper option for Swan Back line.

Chambers is a worry for sure after the skinning he got last week - plus he is still young and Wenger may take him out the firing line. ADM will fancy it for sure.

Naylor is obvious choice but certainly worth seeing the line up at Man City - if Bartley gets 90 and does well for 3.9 its a no-brainer as one of your 'deadwood' subs..

I was just looking at Bartley as well given the Fernandez news...seems way too short term though given he's likely to only get 1 or 2 games in which I'd play him....

As for Chambers, Wenger should probably rest him but his transfer shambles mean he can't really go with Monreal at CB and Bellerin at RB against United.

But that is my point if he is your 5th defender - you only want him in for those odd games and you have 2FTs. Plus it might free up cash. But wouldn't do it till post Man City - if Naylor gets a card there he is nailed on to start I'd have thought as they are nearly defenderless.

He may get away with Chambers as ADM is not that quick - but they could but Janujai (sic) on him. Herad good reports of Bellerin. Or put him CB and drop Monreal.

From that season (2 years ago) I don't think Yaya or Ramsey were in there.

          Bale probably also involved

    gents

    Krul,Taylor

    Baines,Ivan,Hutton,Clyne,Wisdom

    Fab,Sanchez,Chadli,Siggy,Jones

    Aguero,Wellbeck,Pelle

    0.6 and 2fts

    Possible moves:
A)fab and Pelle to Downing and Costa ,would leave me light in midfield. One main Chelsea attacker will be enough
B)Ivan to azpi sideways but frees up some cash
    C)anything else you guys think?
    Thanks 😀

This Moyes move to Donostia could end up being a salvation to unemployment in Spain, at least for interpretors.
I mean it should end up with an equivalent of a football team wit newly employed interperetors around the clock.
Scottish to English to Espanol to basque and now i'm not even counting the obvious occurance of accents/dialects that would bring the total of jobs up by a great deal.

Yeah right, that would be as likely as we could send a sond out in space for, lets say a decade and then from that send a part landing on a comet and with that send info home to our own planet. It's just not possible is it.......

It's a lottery. I think Welbz will drop prior to the Million Dollar Man rising, but that's not what you are asking.

It's amazing how much harder it is to 'downgrade' someone to a cheaper player.

Been looking at ADM to Downing all week, to allow moves for Costa, Haz and Azpil. Can't quite pull the trigger on it though.

Does a psychological barrier get in the way of some of your transfers? Do you find it difficult to see past the 'more expensive, better player' mentality?

I did ADM > Downing by realising they're statistically very similar and it's actually Downing who has the in form strikers finishing off his chances right now.

Well, there is a reason behind it, expensive players normally play for big teams which brings points on a regular basis, with cheap players you have to bet on their fixtures and form.
