Villa and Southampton share the Monday night spoils in a 1-1 draw at the midlands. Gabby Agbonlahor grabs his third of the season before a late Nathaniel Clyne strike denies the hosts all three points.

Agbonlahor the Villains’ Hero
The frontman capitalised on an error from Fraser Forster to notch his first goal since Gameweek 4 last night. Agbonlahor’s pace posed the Saints backline problems aplenty during the first period in particular and his strike means he’s now scored 50% (three of six) of his side’s goals this season. Given that Villa have netted just twice in the last eight matches, they’ll need to do far more to persuade us of investing – with Burnley, Palace, Leicester and West Brom in the next four, though, the fixtures are on their side, whilst Christian Benteke’s return from suspension in Gameweek 14 against the Eagles should help Paul Lambert’s cause.

Saints Full-Backs in the Points
Despite conceding for the first time in five league matches, Nathaniel Clyne and Ryan Bertrand still delivered for their Fantasy owners in the Villa Park encounter. The duo’s attacking forays proved vital for the Saints’ equaliser as Clyne lashed home his second goal of the season thanks to Bertrand’s cutback from the left – the duo now sit second and third for defenders in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

With 32% and 22% ownership respectively, Clyne and Bertrand are amongst the four most popular defenders in the FPL game but as the fixtures now take a turn for the worse, many are weighing up their options. Given that Ronald Koeman’s side face City, Arsenal, United and Everton in the next five Gameweeks now, the full-backs will need to continue their attacking raids, with defensive returns looking far less certain.

Tadic and Pelle Stumble Again
Hopes were high for the popular Southampton pair after the likes of Ron Vlaar, Philippe Senderos and Nathan Baker were ruled out through injury in the heart of the Villa defence. Pelle had one of his poorest matches of the season, however, and fired just a single attempt on goal – he has now failed to register one shot on target in the last four Gameweeks and with the likes of Charlie Austin, Danny Inga and Wilfried Bony appearing on our radars, last night could prove his farewell bow in many Fantasy teams. The second most popular forward in the FPL game with 31% ownership, Pelle’s appeal is also dampened by the fact he remains on four yellow cards – just one caution shy of a single-match ban.

Tadic’s place in our squads is also uncertain. After blanking in seven of the first 11 Gameweeks, he needed a big performance last night to stay in our Fantasy plans – another lacklustre blank suggests there’d be no surprise to see him appear amongst the most transferred out before the next deadline is upon us.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Chelsea options

For this hot topic I thought I’d take a look at the last six weeks and overall to see how the three main Chelsea midfielders Fabregas, Hazard and Oscar have performed. I’ll also have a look at how they compare with Costa.

    Overall here are the tallies

    Fabregas - 72 pts, 10 assists, 13 bonus points, 1 goal

    Hazard - 67 pts, 2 assists, 12 bonus points, 4 goals

    Oscar – 53 pts, 3 assists, 7 bonus points, 3 goals

In terms of points per games it is a little more even with Oscar’s two games out putting him on 5.3, with Hazard on 6 and Fabregas on 5.6.

So let’s look at the last six to see whether this is the same picture.

Hazard 39 pts, no assists, 9 bonus points 3 goals

Fabregas 37 pts, 4 assists, 8 bonus points, 1 goal

Oscar 34 pts, 2 assists, 6 bonus points, 2 goals

Oscar is doing better here and close to Fabregas’s output. Given he is currently 1.2m less than Fabregas I think he looks like a good alternative to the Spaniard and Hazard. But you get what you pay for. Hazard has the superior goal threat and Fabregas the superior assist threat and consistency.

So now let’s have a look at Costa – for this I’ve taken his last six matches as he has not been available for the last six gameweeks.

Costa 28 pts, 4 goals, no assists, 2 bonus.

Overall Costa has 69 pts, 11 goals, no assists and 9 bonus points.

And this is where this research becomes particularly interesting. As much as it pains me to say at 11m Costa is in no way justifying his price tag compared to his midfield colleagues. Hazard already has more and offers greater assist and bonus potential. Fabregas is just two points shy of him overall. In the last six games for each Costa has the worst overall score.

There is a case for going for Oscar plus Hazard or Fabregas and Hazard over Costa and a Chelsea midfielder.

If you are too frightened to go down this path then at the very least this research shows that Costa is not the superior captain choice over any of his midfield colleagues.

Here are the double digit tallies to back that up

    Hazard 3
    Costa 2
    Fabregas 2
    Oscar 2

And the tallies for weeks where they failed to pick up anything above the standard 2-3 pts.

    Costa 2
    Fabregas 3
    Oscar 5
    Hazard 6

This shows that while Costa and Fabregas have consistency, Hazard offers a better chance of an explosive score and is therefore a better captaincy choice for those looking to rise up the tables. I’d argue that failure to captain Costa will lead to less of a dip in rankings than was previously thought due to his low Gameweek scores in his recent matches.

I'm not brave enough to do that - but there is a compelling argument for having Hazard and Fabregas and Rooney over Costa, Hazard and a lesser striker.

Fabregas is clearly matching Costa due to their understanding. For every Costa goal there is likely to be a Fabregas assist plus bonus.

Hopefully that continues. Problem is, Costa gets a lot of chances. He could easily have scored a hat trick this week. Not sure how the view on this would be if that had happened...

I've currently got Fabregas, Hazard and Terry as my Chelsea options. Costa picking up goals is annoying but it doesn't hurt as much as it ought to due to his lack of bonus.

I think you have a good combo there. No reason to change.

I have Costa, Oscar and Azpi...gone with that to afford ADM and Sanchez as well as Aguero.

Currently Oscar is keeping up with his colleagues just, but that extra money means getting in those other big hitters too.

With Fab and Haz over Costa I think that has the same effect as you save a good 1-2m getting Fab over Costa (depending on when you got either).

He doesnt pick up bonus for all sorts of reasons, one of the big ones is with Hazard and Fabs around its kind of hard to. I actually think ditching Costa is a sensible gamble, with fairly minimal risk. In fact Costa owners were rather fortunate with what looked an offside goal to me this weekend.....

As explained I'm too much of a cautious player. There is a risk in ditching Costa due to his ownership. That happens to be the way I play the game. But plenty don't. Plenty like to take risks and they are more likely to be in the top 1,000 than me because they take risks. I put this up for all to see - if you like taking risks then it looks like Costa is ditchable. If you don't then keep him but make sure you also get a Chelsea midfielder in.

There is another issue to consider. If Costa gets his 5th yellow and skips a game that could open some managers up to the possibility of remembering this hot topic and thinking why not use that as a chance to load up on Chelsea mids.

Yep. I need Costa to keep pace, I then need the others to steel a march. Its a strategy that has ensured I've finished in the top 10K for each of the last four seasons. But also a strategy that has only resulted in one top 1K finish in that time.

nevertheless a v good post! i think many people are now aware about costa vs the mid and the lack of bonus points..just how many people are willing to take such a risk is another story.

put it this way..if u have fab now (most likely situation for many people) and u currently have ADM+costa..how confident are u in getting more points with haz+rooney? or haz+bony etc

the uncertainty of the swap certainly will hinder many people from making the swap imo.

Completely agree with the last part, captaining Costa is not an optimal play but due to his ownership you sort of need him unless your catching up later on. Hazard ( if you have him) is a better captain choice and arguably the only choice from the Chelsea team in my opinion

I'm on a wildcard and currently have ADM and Austin over Rooney and Downing. Downing's potential injury is a factor, but so too is Falcao's return to full training. If that happens Rooney could play deeper. But with ADM he always bombs forward.

I think Rooney comes with a risk but has a bigger upside as he tends to get bonus with just one goal. ADM is the safe option.

What I will say though is that I think one of ADM or Rooney is important over the next two gameweeks.

You'll note I said 'important' not 'essential'. Who knows what you will get with ManU this season. 😉

I do know that for club and country Rooney is in form and historicall a streaky player.

ADM is also due, according to this table... (RVP has slipped down the table and if he plays like he did at theweekend will be off it soon). Yaya the big riser - he's on top form at the moment.

With Costa and Fabregas you're paying a premium for consistency at the moment. When another big hitter shows themselves capable of doing the same I'd drop either of them without hesitation. That's not the case with Costa just yet so I think I'll hold on a little longer.

Write off Costa as a captaincy option at your peril, you see what position he plays in that team and where he shoots from, his conversion rate isn't going to drop when he's shooting from 5 yards.. And he's up against Sunderland this week..

He needs to score a brace to get bonus and has pretty much no chance of assists. He's consistent but evidence suggests there are better captaincy contenders (ie those who will get double digit scores). Aguero, Sanchez, Hazard all offer more upside. Costa will get the occasional big haul - but mostly it will be 6pts for a goal while Fabregas, Oscar and Hazard clean up the bonus.

Not sure - probably Sanchez. Maybe ADM/Rooney depending on which I get in. I may go Costa - but I think that will be mainly because Aguero doesn't have a great fixture. I know I'll kick myself if I captained Costa though - be nice to get his 12pt as a captain...but heartbreaking to miss out on Sanchez's possiible 32.

It's between ADM and Costa for me. Costa was in the lead but hearing about his lack of assists and bonus points is making me think. Adm is due, sure, but he could easily blank or get his standard assist which he loves at the min.

I have Sanchez and haven't really considered him, maybe i should but it's that early kick off

Plus can we factor in that Costa is more likely to be rotated for one game at least over Xmas? Sure, we can't read Mourinho's mind, but arguably Cesc and Hazard are more nailed? Oscar I'm still unsure on, I think the same could happen to him.

I went Hazard over Costa last week and am pretty pleased after the bonus points came down.

I think Oscar is a better option that Fabregas, his only issue is that in big games (Man City/Arsenal/Man Utd), he sits deep and does a lot of defensive work. You'll see if exclude those games that his stats are up there with Hazard, but for cheaper.

Something to bear in mind if you own Oscar.

As far as overall points per game are concerned, it's actually Fabregas who is on 6.0 and Hazard who is on 5.6.

Although Costa has fewer points overall, this is because he has missed two matches. His 6.9 points per game overall is second only to Sanchez's 7.4.

But Hazard is the best captaincy option, since his 7.7 points per game in home matches is bettered only by Pelle's 8.2. They might both be candidates for the bench in away matches though, since their away form is far worse.

As you point out though, looking at just the last 6 matches and also looking forward to forthcoming fixtures might tell a different story.

So it's Costa and Fabregas for consistency, Hazard and Costa for home captaincy options, or Oscar to save money.

    New post:

    Morning everyone,

Thoughts with the below on this cold and miserable Monday.

    Forster
    Clyne Baines Chambers Duff Moore
    Sanchez Fab Siggy Downing BOyd
    Costa Aguero Pelle

    2Ft, 0.5itb

    A) Pelle > Rooney, CLyne > Yun
    B) Pelle > Austin > Downing > ADM/Hazard, Clyne > Yun (-4)
    C) Pelle > Austin, Clyne > Azpi, play Downing

    Many thanks:)

    Hope you can help, Cheers!

Wait on Downing news because WHam have good fixtures, if he is injured then that rules out C perhaps. Don't like Yun, maybe just Pelle > Bony/Austin and keep the other FT

This is almost the same team as I have - so you must obviously be a clever guy! Lot depending on Downing fitness, and how much you fancy AdM to go on a run. But B doesn't look half bad.
Also consider whether to upgrade Pelle to Rooney, or Costa to Rooney (see above topic)

It's an interesting one. I would like another big hitting mid like Hazard/ADM/Toure but Rooney is also tempting me. The thing I don't like with having a CAR frontline is that I have to play DOwning and if he is injured then that's not great. Considering Costa>Rooney but obviously it's a move which is risky.

AdM might be the safer for ManU cover. You might also consider going with Kane to allow for a better defender than Yun, e.g. from Swansea or West Ham. Wait for news on Downing though, even if that means losing £0.1 on Pelle

I also have a very similar team with 2 free transfers. I'm thinking about Pelle to Bony and Bertrand (Clyne for you) to Wisdom or Yun leaving some cash spare to do Fab to Hazard later. Bony can also be later replaced by Giroud.

For me its either the above or your option B or C

2 FTs, and a little lost:

    Forster (Hamer)

    Baines, Chambers, Naylor (Hutton, Bertrand)

    Downing, ADM, Siggy, Hazard, (Boyd)

    Costa, Aguero, Austin

If I downgrade Forster to Guzan I have 0.9m in the bank, but where to spend it? Downing or Austin out won't allow me to upgrade to anyone any better, so Bertrand to Terry is affordable, but my defence isn't too bad rotation wise anyway. I'm a bit stumped. Just do the 1 FT this week and wait and see over Christmas looking the safest play?

Any reason not to do Wilson >Azpi as my 2nd FT this week? Already done Pelle > Austin. Going to give my other Soton assests one more game, but Tadic is definitely on the chopping block. Other option is a 8 pt hit to do the following moves (which are probably the moves I'm aiming for long term, but will spread them out if not this week)

    Pelle > Austin (done)
    Tadic > Hazard
    Bertrand > Azpi
Wilson > Yun (or other cheapie)

    Krul Foster
    Baines Bertrand Chambers Hutton Wilson
    Tadic Downing Siggy Sanchez King
    Aguero Costa Austin

Right, gents. Think I got away with one a bit this week and held onto downing and sakho despite my better judgement. I've got 2FT and not a penny ITB. How does this look - am looking at doing this sharpish due to imminent rises/falls.

    Pelle > Rooney
    Aguero > Costa
    Sakho > Kane

    for a -4

    Guzan
    Baines Coleman Yun [Chambers, Moore]
    Sanchez Hazard ADM Downing [Boyd]
    Rooney Costa Kane

    Yay or Nay?

Fair enough. Aguero just seems so fragile and a very busy schedule. Granted Kane is a punt, but one that makes those transfers possible! 🙂 Can't do Pelle > Rooney unless I downgrade one of ADM/Sanchez/Hazard which I just can't see myself doing at the moment. Thanks for replying
