Diego Costa blanks and picks another away day booking, ruling him out of Chelsea’s Gameweek 14 derby with Spurs. Danny Welbeck notches Arsenal’s winner alongside Olivier Giroud in attack. Charlie Austin and Danny Ings do their bit for the budget striker’s union, while Robin van Persie recalls golden times with a strike in United’s dismantling of Hull. Here’s the notes on all Saturday’s events…

Welbeck Overcomes Tactical Tweak

Having been sold on by over 80,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers heading into the Gameweek, Danny Welbeck was, as expected, forced into a role on the left flank as the recently recovered Olivier Giroud returned as a central striker against West Brom. However, Welbeck overcome the tactical change and proved the doubters wrong by grabbing the winner with a powerful header from a Santi Cazorla cross, his first league strike since Gameweek 8. In truth, the Arsenal attack was fluid throughout with Welbeck swapping roles with Alexis Sanchez – the Chilean drifting out to the left to allow Welbeck to work in tandem with Giroud. It will be interesting to monitor Sanchez’ numbers in the coming week should that trend continue.

The switch-up by Arsene Wenger was certainly bad news for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Despite a string of impressive displays, he dropped out to make way for Giroud in a move that could signal the start of rotation in the wide roles, with Theo Walcott’s belated return also on the cards in the coming weeks. Occlude-Chamberlain also picked up a knock to his knee when introduced from the bench and could be a doubt for midweek visit of Southampton.

At the back, Laurent Koscielny returned in the centre of defence to help the Gunners deliver their first clean sheet in three. With decent fixtures ahead (SOU, sto, NEW, liv, QPR) we could now see a spike in investment in their backline, though with Mathieu Debuchy scheduled to be back in action in a fortnight, Calum Chambers’ starting role will soon be in question. Nacho Monreal kept his start and shifted to left-back but picked up an injury and was replaced by Kieran Gibbs in the first half. He also suffered an injury and will go into the Saints meeting as another doubt.

Austin Stars in Six-Pointer

Charlie Austin notched a goal and an assist on his way to a commanding 10-point haul in QPR’s vital 3-2 victory over fellow strugglers Leicester. The forward has now earned returns in five of his last six appearances, with his FPL ownership growing to almost 9%; Austin’s value also increased to 6.0 overnight – his initial pre-season price. While he now faces potentially thorny trips to Swansea, Everton and Arsenal in his next five, Austin’s Gameweek 10 strike away to Chelsea provided evidence that he could emerge as a “fixture proof” asset. Elsewhere, Leroy Fer’s goal against the Foxes has also blinked him on our radars: the former Norwich man took his tally to a goal and two assists in his last six outings; he looks to be the only viable mid-price midfield option currently on offer at Loftus Road at 5.5 in the FPL. As a sidenote, Bobby Zamora missed the Foxes clash with a back problem but could well earn a recall for Tuesday’s visit to Swansea.

Ings Maintains His Own Scoring Streak

Burnley’s Danny Ings took his tally to four goals in five with a late penalty to earn the Clarets a vital draw against Aston Villa, snatching maximum bonus points in the process. With West Ham’s Diafra Sakho still sidelined, Ings is currently embroiled in a head-to-head fight with QPR’s Austin for the mantle of best budget striker. Ings boasts promising fixtures over the next two Gameweeks (NEW, qpr) to further reward his 1.2% ownership; following that, Burnley’s schedule stiffens somewhat (SOT tot LIV mcy).

Liverpool Edge Potters To Finally Find a Win

Brendan Rodgers handed Rickie Lambert a second consecutive start against Stoke and the striker rewarded that faith with the assist for Glen Johnson’s late winner. After pinching their first victory since Gameweek 8, Liverpool now have enticing fixtures against Leicester and Sunderland on the horizon and will be hoping to embark on a revival of fortunes. Intriguingly, yesterday’s victory and clean sheet coincided with the first time Rodgers had opted to bench skipper Steven Gerrard this season; Gerrard will, however, be expected to earn a recall for the midweek trip to face the Foxes.

As for Stoke, they lost both Steve Sidwell and Glenn Whelan to injury and now face a trip to Old Trafford to midweek with a depleted side. Bojan’s impressive performance at Anfield provides some room for optimism, however – the Spaniard continues to sparkle in his “number 10” role under Mark Hughes.

United Tear Into Tigers

A convincing 3-0 win for Man United over Hull came at a cost for Louis van Gaal, with Wayne Rooney (ankle) and Angel Di Maria (hamstring) both sustaining injury setbacks. Di Maria suffered his injury after just 14 minutes of the Old Trafford encounter and the United boss has confirmed that the quick turnaround in fixtures will count the Argentine out of Tuesday’s clash with Stoke.

Rooney’s prognosis seems somewhat more encouraging, with Van Gaal stating that the player himself suggested that he will be fit for the visit of the Potters. Rooney is in outstanding form for club and country and his goal in the 3-0 win was his second in consecutive league outings, signaling an upturn in his popularity as a Fantasy target: Rooney attracted over 60,000 new FPL owners ahead of the Tiger’s victory.

While Di Maria is seemingly ruled out and Rooney remaining a doubt for Tuesday evening, Van Gaal will at least have renewed confidence in Robin Van Persie. The Dutchman broke his three-match goal drought and earned an assist against the Tigers. That’s unlikely to be enough to earn Van Persie investment, however: his 12.4 FPL price tag remains a major obstacle given his erratic form to this point.

While Hull’s performance was dismal and hardly stretched the United rearguard, Van Gaal will also be encouraged by a second clean sheet in as many matches. With Marcos Rojo returning to the defensive unit following a shoulder injury, United have now allowed just three goals in the last five, despite Van Gaal shifting formations over that run. While that’s enough to warrant our interest in defensive assets, both Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett were dropped to the bench against Hull, leaving us limited to Rojo at 5.9 and Chris Smalling at 5.3. Like Van Persie, those price tags are likely to encourage Fantasy managers to shop elsewhere.

Swans Turn To Sigurdsson and Bony

Wilfried Bony and Gylfi Sigurdsson were once again pivotal for Swansea as they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace. Bony now has six goals in his last seven and, with an ownership still at just 6.5%, looks to be an excellent differential ahead of the midweek home meeting with the QPR defence. Sigurdsson, meanwhile, continues to produce as Garry Monk’s chief architect. The Icelander has played a part in eight of his side’s eleven home goals this campaign and now sits third in the FPL midfield rankings. Unlike Bony, however, his ownership is already flourishing at over 47%.

Nathan Dyer was kept out of the matchday squad against Palace and would seem likely to earn a recall as Monk freshens things for QPR’s visit. Leon Britton could also come into the equation for Tuesday’s encounter with Jonjo Shelvey’s start perhaps under threat.

Jedinak Powers On

Mile Jedinak was once again on the scoresheet from the spot for the Eagles – his fifth goal of the season. The Australian is now joint second for value in the FPL midfield rankings, just behind Swansea’s Sigurdsson. Having been largely overlooked as a fifth midfielder option to this point, Jedinak has now grabbed goals in three of his last four appearances: a level of consistency that’s forcing us to re-appraise the Palace skipper.

Neil Warnock’s men have Villa, Spurs and Stoke over their next three Gameweeks – a run that should promote further investment in their attacking assets. Jedinak and Yannick Bolasie remain viable short-term options for those looking to free up funds in the midfield area – Jedinak was the most popular signing in the FPL overnight.

Cresswell Clips Magpies’ Wings

The 12.5% owned Stewart Downing was back in action for West Ham yesterday and was handed a central role by Sam Allardyce, as his side claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle. Diafra Sakho, Alex Song and Enner Valencia all remained sidelined but the Hammers had the strength in depth to put an end to Newcastle’s six-match winning streak. An instinctive finish from Aaron Cresswell earned the east Londoners victory – the lef-tback now has a goal, two assists and two clean sheets in his last six. With West Brom, Sunderland and Leicester in the next four, Cresswell’s appeal is at an all-time high and, with an ownership still simmering under the 1% mark, his differential status makes him an obvious option for those shopping for a defensive asset ahead of the Christmas period.

As for Newcastle, they will make the trip to Burnley on Tuesday without both Jack Colback and Moussa Sissoko: the latter saw red for two bookings, while Colback picked up his fifth yellow of the campaign. With Tim Krul also thought to be ruled out for a number of weeks and Daryl Janmaat sustaining a hamstring problem, Alan Pardew is suddenly struggling for numbers and potentially without key men. On the plus side, Steven Taylor returned to the bench and saw action in the final quarter at West Ham, while Fabricio Coloccini may also return to contention for the Humberside trip.

Reckless Costa Topples From the Tightrope

Diego Costa’s owners suffered a double blow as the striker delivered his third blank Gameweek of the season and picked up his fifth yellow, ruling him out of Chelsea’s midweek meeting with Spurs at the Bridge. Having been booked in each of his five away league appearances, the Spaniard’s poor discipline has become a real hindrance for his owners. In truth, Costa was fortunate to avoid further punishment after a number of altercations at the Stadium of Light. The blank and Costa’s impending suspension proved enough for some to show him the exit: only Angel di Maria suffered more FPL sales overnight.

Those who captained Costa can at least take some consolation from the fact that Alexis Sanchez blanked, while Angel di Maria’s efforts against Hull were cut short. That leaves Sergio Aguero as the last of the popular armband options in the Gameweek, as he prepares to take on the Southampton defence at St Mary’s today.

Elsewhere in the Chelsea camp, Eden Hazard once again failed to deliver points on the road. In seven away trips this season, the Belgian has failed to score and has mustered just two assists. Despite this, and as a by-product of Di Maria’s sales, Hazard’s value increased to 10.2 overnight ahead of the Stamford Bridge meeting with Spurs.

Defensively, Chelsea are beginning to convince. The stalemate saw Mourinho’s back four claim a fifth clean sheet of the season and; they have shipped just four goals in their last eight league encounters.

Pantilimon Key As Black Cats Raise Their Game

Gus Poyet’s Sunderland are now unbeaten in their last four and have conceded just two goals over that period. This upturn in defensive form has coincided with Poyet’s decision to drop Vito Mannone to the bench in favour of Costel Pantilimon, with the former City keeper earning five save points and four bonus points over his last three outings. The upcoming fixtures are far from enticing (MCI, liv, WHM, new) although Saturday’s result demonstrates that they have the form and determination to produce across those games; Pantilimon, at 4.4 in the FPL, appears to be the standout option in their rearguard.

The perils of the fifth "boyd" defender.

I was just wondering why do people insist on having a "boyd" in their team leaving them no option but to knee jerk when one of their front 7 go down through suspension or injury. Having a "boyd" also means most likely having to play a sahko Austin or siggy in a horrid fixture when they fall. I just don't get it.

Those that have a "boyd" as their fifth mid how do ye feel about it now that adm and Costa look out for the next gameweek? Is he worth the required 4th hit to get a playing mid in? Also are you happy to go in to the busy Xmas rotation period with a "boyd" on the bench?

I understand the tactic if you can get a dyer or Puncheon type player for cheap on your bench but when their are no realistic scorers available for little money in midfield I don't understand it at all.

Is that not a problem though? How many 2 pointers have you had to sit through as you played a weak 3rd striker or weak-ish mid due to not wanting to play your fifth mid? Also have you had to take hits due to a fwd or mid being injured and you not wanting to take a chance on the fifth mid?

I'm quite happy to have Boyd. Only going to need him once or twice and when I do there's a chance he gets something other than 2/3 points. The £1m saved from buying a player like Boyd also increases your points for the rest of your team, for example, there's more points difference between a £5m defender and a £4m one than a £4.5m mid and a £5.5m one.

The whole idea of a nailed 2 pter 5th mid is so you don't have to transfer when you get a 1 week suspension or minor injury. You simply play him - no question.

Nope. Some people will have a "Boyd" for unknown injuries or horrendous game weeks when you don't can't make 3/4 transfers.

The rest of the time they are happy to take a hit to swap out an "ADM" as with that -4 you also get to play Hazard and not Boyd.

As ever, it's a risk vs reward conundrum - there is more than one way to play.

      Boyd is great

Am in top 1000 and one of the reasons for this is Boyd
Even though he's never played for me 🙂

      But enables money spent elsewhere

Hazard , Sanchez , Aguero , Oscar etc are fixture proof . The rest I can rotate for good spells of fixtures . For example Tadic , Pelle have now moved to bony , Austin etc ...

      Cheapies are great enablers

I think this is a simple answer, people want to maximise potential and value in the starting 11. Boyd comes in handy for a suspension or unknown injury (Costa in both cases this season for me). However when 1 of my front 11 goes down for an anticipated lengthier period then a straight swap is a better move. ADM to Hazard was an easy decision for free.
Puncheon was excellent value last season and I had him as bench fodder initially but he was a consistent and high points scorer, Boyd isn't

It's all about the price - he leaves more for spending elsewhere. We don't expect him to play much, so 2,3 or a very occasional 8 will have to do!

actually not really..i have a team of 105 TV which is average here but i spend all my money and still feel there is a need for cash.

It depends on who you want in your team..just 1 gw ago having ADM sanchez hazard + costa aguero baines is the "ideal" frontline but would have taken away most budget.

of cos if u are happy to get budget players in your mid u can field a strong front 8..but u will miss out on one of the big attacker.

if there is no realistic scorer available in midfield, instead of spending much on 5th mid..u might as well get a solid 4th def as sub. At least u can have a better option in defence. So its not always about 5th mid..

Fair enough thanks for the replies.

I do understand the enabler concept but I just think that attacking players rotated on fixtures can do so much better than just getting siggy and sticking with him.

I think a lot of people are missing out by having say adm siggy plus boyd and austin over a siggy chadli and downing Austin where you pick the 3 with the best fixtures and have the luxury of a good sub instead of a yun at qpr

I played siggo for all of those pints as it happens but benched him for a lot of his blanks. Obviously you will get the odd one wrong but playing the odds you should get more right than wrong and for the unseen rotation/injuries you have a real solid sub to come on

Is it not nate? It sounds like one to me.

Take mirallas as for example. If you rotated him for home games last year he got 5.8 ppg which would outscore most big mids and you then have the other rotation options also.

There is not much point in getting into specific players but I rotated Nolan, mirallas, Puncheon, eriksen, and Johnson to great effect while people held onto stuttering yaya and hazards after Xmas last season. It helped me climb from 311k to 3.1k from gw 24 onwards. I used to follow the cheap fifth mid template religiously up until last season and now I am wondering why.

I only had 3 max 4 from these at any one time. It was usually pick two from three with two big mids.

Ramsey was another of the rotation mids when he came back from injury.

Nothing self righteous about it nomar it is not as if I have all the answers. I'm not preaching from no1 in the world spot, I've never even been in the top 1k but I don't get the dead fifth mid spot. I was just hoping someone could shed a bit of light on it a but more but it looks like everyone just does it to have the comfort blanket of a poor value big mid instead of having the trauma of getting the budget player wrong.

I don't get it either. Or more accurately I find that people nail their colours to one way of thinking and thus remain inflexible, which is not good in FPL terms.

One thing I would say in support of the uber budget mid is that the budget defenders are often better value and the 5th mid is usually my last sub.

Also I would say that the strategy can vary depending on what's available. Up until this point good lower price options have been available. This year going into Xmas busy schedule I think there is mileage in have decent scoring players across the front 8.

That is the best response yet Qubit.

If a bargain fifth mid that can score becomes available I would seriously consider a crossover of strategies or if a solid 4 mids that I wouldn't mind playing every week became available I'd seriously consider it then too but this season I don't see it. There are no michu and fellaini's that we want to play either home or away so I think considering a rotation between three budget mids and a budget fwd where you pi k the most likely three from four each week is a perfectly valid strategy.

The strategy does come with a health warning ofc in that it probably shouldn't be attempted unless the manager knows their apples.

What about the 100 teams ranked around 1m that employ the same strategy?

Just because the top 100 do something doesn't mean it is the right way to go as these players will generally have had a greater share of luck than most to date. Count how many of the current top 100 will be in the top 100 come the end of the season. I bet it will be a small percentage.

OK - I strongly believe a cheaper 5th mid is for the best during a season 🙂

First off; the argument regarding top 100 "have had a greater share of luck" is a bad argument.
Luck --> That's what we are playing for, isn't it?
We pick the players with the highest probability of giving us returns?
We cannot tell who will score the points in this and that spesific gameweek, but we know/believe they will score more than the alternatives long-term.
And, if "everyone" in top 100 is doing something, it is probably "correct" (in the long-term, not short term).

Second; Take Downing/Siggy - and compare it with having Boyd.
Downing->Boyd gives you 1.3 extra cash.
(Chamberlain will give you around 2.0.)
You can use this, for example, to upgrade Eto'o or a defender to someone more consistent.
Or, if ADM get's injured, you can switch directly to Yaya - for example.

Thirdly; How many times do you reckon you will need the 5th midfielder during a season (cause of injury/benched/susp)?
                  5?

I see the arguments for rotating mid-value players, yes I do, but I believe there is more points in not doing so, and instead going with a 4.5 mid.

In lack of enlightening arguments, I had a look at 20 FPL players, players that have a very good track record in FPL (Top 5k several times last years ,etc).
Since I have bookmarked these teams the last few months, the sample is random.
Every team is within top 500 this year.

I found that everyone, expect of one team, owning Zaha at 5.2, had Boyd/Marney/Albrighton(!)/King/Ameobi at 4.5 or less.

Thus is compelling alright but I bet their are several players who don't just use this strategy in isolation to achieve top ranks.

The fact the majority of players play with the 4.5m strategy means that of course more of them will be in the top 100 or so.

I really couldn't disagree more with your top 100 idolatry though. I have had a horrid start to the season and am only 100 points or so off the top 100 in the game. I've not had Costa form/lucky run, I've not had adm lucky/form run and I had 5 weeks in a row of captain blanks. I've also not had a saints defender for their improbable run of attacking and defensive returns. The top 100 so far will have had all or a combination of the lucky returns from those above. You might call this good judgement but I call any returns which are statistically abnormal luck. I'll repeat again, the vast majority of those in the top 100 now will not be there come the end of the season

Sorry buddy I was caught up with work there so just getting back now.

Price is irrelevant really it is more about having a scoring option. In years gone by I've had players like dyer and Puncheon etc but these guys would regularly play for me. I don't think I've ever gone with a dead player as my fifth mid which is basically what boyd is.

It isn't only the players who are making a rare appearance in the top hundred who generally use a cheap 5th midfielder rather than rotating mid-price mids, especially in the first half of the season. Many (but not all) successful FPL players have used this strategy. It isn't the only strategy that can prove successful, but it is one that shouldn't be ruled out.

fantasyfootballgeek runs a weekly article on "Analysing 10 top FPL managers" (http://www.fantasyfootballgeek.co.uk/fantasy-premier-league-gameweek-14-analysing-10-top-fpl-managers/).
These managers have never finished outside the top 10k in the last 3 years, including 4 who have achieved a top 100 finish, and half of them currently have Boyd as their 5th midfielder.

            Excellent info Red thanks.

As I say having a cheap fifth mid has been perceived as being the only way to go but this year is different than others imo as there is a distinct lack of a scoring fifth mid.

Boyd is not much better than Ferguson was a few seasons back imo as he will almost never be used and therefore his contribution to a teams final score will almost be negligent.

There has been some really good discussion on this topic by some really good posters so I'm glad I brought it up even if the majority don't agree with me.

There aren't many scoring cheap midfielders, but there are a few.

Jedinak (5.2), Walters (5.2) and Wanyama (4.8) are worth considering if you can afford them. Jedinak is probably the best prospect and should significantly outscore Boyd.

Yeah, see if it was Jedinak or Walters it would make a lot more sense to me.

It is defo harder to have to make a selection decision each gw and you will obviously get it wrong at times but I really think it is a valid if unorthodox strategy to go with a couple of decent playing options for you 4th and 5th mid spots.

You are missing the whole point. There is no need for a fifth midfielder. At least, not until the new year.

Consider this: the cheap fifth midfielder's main job is to save you the money to allow you to buy the best front three players. The forwards tend to be the heaviest point scorers in the game.

When you only need 11 outfield players maximum up until Christmas, the cheap fifth midfielder saves you costly bench points.

And if you need further proof, take a look at my fifth midfielder 😯

I think this is the common consensus but if you look at the fpl transfer page and sort by points scored you will see that there are only 5 players over 8m in the forwards tab and their are 6 - 8 midfielders over 8m with two borderline in Tadic and Eriksen.

Personally I don't think it is the best policy to waste money on the expensive forwards unless they are captain material (which I don't think Costa is but that is for another debate) as they don't provide decent value unless you are doubling their points. I think you will do much better points wise if you get your one big forward (two if their are two like a rvp and suarez of the last couple of years) that you will captain and then spend the money on the better value midfielders (Pelle and Aguero are the only two forwards on the first three pages over 8m when sorting by value while there are 4 midfielder with tadic and eriksen also nearly 8m on there too which brings it up to 6 midfielders compared to two forwards).

I guess it is about how you play the game, I know some like the comfort of the big players and no selection headaches as they don't believe in their own ability to pick the right value players but personally I think you should only have two maybe three big ticket players who you will capt and then the rest should be the highest cost players providing the best value that you can fit in.

More often than not my 5th mid is on my bench.

So far it has been 12/13 gameweeks and this is the case.
The 1 week I played boyd he scored a goal, which is why he's better than a non-starter like albrighton.

There's no value i having Dyer/Downing/etc. as your 5th mid, when they are on the bench so often.

I don't think you are quite getting what I was trying to say.

Of course you didn't play Boyd but how many 2pts or 1pt or zero points have you sat through due to your cheap fwd, mid or defender having a poor fixture that you couldn't bench them in? If you can get viable cheap options that are scoring points then fine but in the case of boyd he is basically a dead player where you got extremely lucky to get his goal the one time he played.

Also, don't just look at forwards.

Boyd can be the difference between owning Clichy/Azpi and owning Baines/Ivan...go ahead and sort those ones on the transfer page 🙂

you're right though, it's definitely a playstyle thing

I think this validates the point tbf.

You are most likely playing a weak option rather than playing boyd who you have no faith in (possibly influenced by this post and if so apologies).

Bit harsh, even a broken clock is right twice every 24 hrs 😉

Ps I see a lot of guys playing chadli this week or 4 defenders so as not to play boyd while with 5 decent mids I can bench chadli and play mirallas siggy Sanchez and hazard in midfield.

Well...that's what we all keep saying. There's every chance of their top 13-15 players staying fit the entire season. The same way United have had a freakish season with injury, they could very well have the opposite. Plus, J-Rod & JWP due back---They are much solid than we give them credit for IMO.
