Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again as Fantasy managers prepare for a quick turnaround in fixtures ahead of tomorrow’s 7.30pm deadline. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Diego Costa suspended for Chelsea’s home encounter against Spurs, Sergio Aguero is the standout armband candidate according to the votes cast so far. Despite failing to score in back-to-back matches for the first time this season, the City talisman has earned over 35% of the votes cast as the champions travel to a Sunderland side that has conceded just two goals in the last four and kept the league leaders at bay on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney is next in line as United look for a fourth straight win under Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils’ skipper has netted in successive league matches and is up against a Stoke defence that has been breached in each of the last seven – he’s persuaded over 16% to give him the nod. Robin van Persie remains a real differential for the Potters’ clash, with just 3% looking to the Dutchman to carry on from last weekend’s goal and assist at home to Hull.

Swansea are heavily backed for the visit of QPR – understandable, given that Harry Redknapp’s side have conceded more goals on their travels than any other team. With six goals in his last seven, Wilfried Bony earns 11% of the votes, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson is next in line, having played a part in eight of his side’s 11 home goals so far.

Eden Hazard (7%) and Alexis Sanchez (5%) are also amongst the favourites. With Costa sidelined, Chelsea will be looking for the Belgian to score for the fourth successive home match as Spurs roll up to the Bridge, whilst Sanchez’ owners will be hoping for a return to form – he’s now blanked in each of the last two since being moved back to the flank.

    does taking a hit to replace a non-playing keeper (Krul) make sense in the long run?

    The transfers would be:

    ADM -> Haz
    Krul -> Foster

    (-4)

      Depends on who your other keeper is, its worth it if in the next month of fixtures you think putting in foster will gain more than the 4 points you lose.

      Oh come on, he's 4.6m isn't he? You can afford his 0.1m price drop when it happens.

    Considering I have to ship out Costa for -4 to have 11 playing this gameweek, how smart would it be to buy Rooney?
    I want to do the transfer tonight, can't afford a 0.1 price drop, so is Bony the better choice in my situation?

    1. Walsh
      • 12 Years

      Toss up..largely dependent on what you plan on doing with potential savings in going Bony instead of Rooney. In a vacuum I'd rather have Rooney, personally.

        No plans with the money, I want Rooney. I'm just scared he won't play and my -4 will be wasted 🙂

      I'd say they both have a similar chance of getting on the score sheet, with Bony giving you a bit of differential. Can't go too far wrong with either imo.

      I've just done ADM > Hazard & Costa > Boney with 11.1 in bank to do Boney > Costa f I decide wnt him back. Just gives me more options to strengthen elsewhere.

    I have Oscar, but I am thinking of trading him to Hazard (and probably captaining)

    I know this is sideways but I don't have Costa, and I would feel much more comfortable with Hazard

    I already have Sanchez and I don't want Yaya (yet)

    Thoughts? Do you think Oscar will do alright this week?

      Is Drogba or Remy likely to be up front. I think Hazard is a better (c) choice with Drogba as the target man.

      I'm torn between these 2 too. It's on Bony because QPR play an open game - lots of attempts at both ends. Am concerned that Bony isn't explosive in the sense of him scoring 2 in a game, though.

          I'm lying just outside top 10k and 70 pts clear in mini league so think a risk is required, but think he is a great shout this week

      had the armband on him, but decided to switch to aguero solely based on the fact that aguero plays on wed. would be such a bad experience if you pick a tue captain and he blanks

            But you just did 😉

            I never understood the concept of avoiding (C) players that play early or on the first day of a GW. Its ridiculous, Remember Aguero's 4 goals? It makes no difference..

          I'm feeling a clint Dempsey captain moment when he scored 4 and I had 40th best score that week (2goals and assist will do).If not then it will be yellow card and 2 pts incoming

    Berahino seems to be doing things in fours from GW2. 4 blanks, 4 games with a goal in each match, 4 blanks,...

    Surely, it's time for another run. Captain him this week people.

      not sure if ( c ) him this week would be wise, but definitely he's worth a shot.
      wasn't brave enough to draft him in my team. went with the flow and brought rooney in.

    Need help with this week:

    Guzan - (Jakupovic)
    Baines - Taylor - Clyne - (Moreno - Duff)
    ADM - Sig - Downing - Sanchez - (King)
    Costa - Aguero(c) - Austin

    I needa get rid of Moreno, but now ADM is gone, thinking of swapping ADM -> fab/haz?
    Moreno -> Creswell?
    Costa out? Or hold.
