Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again as Fantasy managers prepare for a quick turnaround in fixtures ahead of tomorrow’s 7.30pm deadline. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

With Diego Costa suspended for Chelsea’s home encounter against Spurs, Sergio Aguero is the standout armband candidate according to the votes cast so far. Despite failing to score in back-to-back matches for the first time this season, the City talisman has earned over 35% of the votes cast as the champions travel to a Sunderland side that has conceded just two goals in the last four and kept the league leaders at bay on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney is next in line as United look for a fourth straight win under Louis van Gaal. The Red Devils’ skipper has netted in successive league matches and is up against a Stoke defence that has been breached in each of the last seven – he’s persuaded over 16% to give him the nod. Robin van Persie remains a real differential for the Potters’ clash, with just 3% looking to the Dutchman to carry on from last weekend’s goal and assist at home to Hull.

Swansea are heavily backed for the visit of QPR – understandable, given that Harry Redknapp’s side have conceded more goals on their travels than any other team. With six goals in his last seven, Wilfried Bony earns 11% of the votes, whilst Gylfi Sigurdsson is next in line, having played a part in eight of his side’s 11 home goals so far.

Eden Hazard (7%) and Alexis Sanchez (5%) are also amongst the favourites. With Costa sidelined, Chelsea will be looking for the Belgian to score for the fourth successive home match as Spurs roll up to the Bridge, whilst Sanchez’ owners will be hoping for a return to form – he’s now blanked in each of the last two since being moved back to the flank.

    Just went through some stats, forums and watched Bolasie's videos from the last 2 games. A lot of trouble for a 5th mid but considerin i have 0 faith in boyd and need a player to cover costa this week(and Austin in his tough away games) i think the 1 million spent on Boyd to Bolasie should prove fruitful.

        if he turns out to be a hit i'll downgrade one of my other attackers and give him a regular starting role.. Still in the play once in a while category for me

        Looks a great bet to cover Austin, Downing when they have a tough away fixture. those 3 together could prove a great bet considerin their fixtures

        need to play him this week vs AVL(Costa suspension), GW 16 vs STK(Austin vs eve), GW 18 vs SOT(Downing vs che) and gives me a great bench option incase of rotation/injuries over the next month.
        so i really reckon he could be worth it since i dont rate boyd at all(cue this being the week where boyd performs)

      Benching Austin in his tough away games is a risky tactic, he scored in the toughest away game at Stamford Bridge already this season and before Sunday he was only player to score at Southampton.

    Who would you out of Clyne (ars), yun (swa if he plays), Chester (eve).

    Have 0.6m itb..The other option is to take a hit
    A: Clyne to azpi...pointless having a 5.4 def that I would bench twice in a row and will probably bench again next week
    Just that I have a lot of value tied in Clyne.

    B: Clyne to clichy...0.6 cheaper then azpi. I think city are going to get on a hot streak now but kolorav returning. Reckon clichy will lose his place even though he is playing well

    C: chester to Hutton. Chester isn't a starter when they play 2 at the back so taking a hit for someone who isn't a starter esp during the busy season isn't a bad idea. Villa have looked tight m have good fix

    Quick show of hands, best option with 2FTs & 0.2 ITB:

    A) Chadli -> Downing
    B) Chadli & Clyne -> Downing & Azpi
    C) Costa & Chadli -> Rooney & Downing
    D) Costa -> Rooney

    Rest of team is:

    DDG
    Baines Clyne Wisdom Naylor (Hutton)
    Fab Siggy Sanchez Chadli (Wanyama)
    Aguero (C) Austin (Costa)

    Thanks

      I think your squad is strong enough that using two FTs would be a waste. However I also think Chadli is worth keeping this week. With that in mind, I think the Costa > Rooney (or Bony if you fancy it) move might be best.

        Reading all the above I've gone Aguero fwiw, I know Sunderland may park the bus but you can't ignore his form and he has the stats to back it.
        At least if it goes wrong you know you went with an informed and safe decision.

    In my experience the guy you throw the armband on before looking at anything else or anyone else's opinion is usually the right one. This week I've done that with Sanchez, not much community love for him but can't see me switching at the 11th hour

    Either of these worth a hit:

    Clyne to Azpi

    Costa to Rooney

    Costa to Bony (already have Siggy)

    1. System builder

      Clyne to Azpi.

      1. baraka1670
        • 11 Years

        I dont think soo as even if Azpi gets a clean sheet it would only make 2points to his team which eventually Clyne would give to or even more

        1. System builder
          • 13 Years
          11 years, 1 month ago

          Possible. But Clyne's fixtures are worse that his value will drop. And if Azpi gets a clean sheet or another extra point or two, many will jump to buy him because of Chelsea's strong fixtures and his budget friendly price compared to other defenders of Chelsea.

    Hey Guys,

    I play draft and i'm unsure about captain selection this week, any suggestions on who to choose and why would be helpful. The options are:

    Hazard [H] (TOT)
    Benteke [A] (CRY)
    Valencia [A] (WBA)
    Dyer [H] (QPR)
    Rojo [H] (STK)

    Cheers.

    Golly. Just noticed that Mata is down to £8.4m!

    It's a criminal waste of fantasy talent. If I was LVG I'd drop Van Persie, play Rooney up top by himself with Mata in behind.
