It’s a short, sharp Scribbles we offer this morning as the tension ramps up ahead of tomorrow’s big kick-off. Aston Villa hope to bring back on old face in Thomas Hitzlsperger, while Roy Hodgson believes in Owen Hargreaves’ fitness. Alan Pardew offers an olive branch to Joey Barton and Tony Pulis is looking for six new players as Stoke square up to Europe. Here we go, folks:

Jose Enrique is set to sign a four-year deal with Liverpool today. Kenny Dalglish’s search for a left-back looks to now be over and with one year left on his Newcastle contract, Enrique’s transfer is thought to be around the region of £6m. More importantly, as far as Fantasy managers are concerned, Enrique is priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and can be expected to see plenty investment on the back of this move.

Alex McLeish has been linked with a move for Thomas Hitzlsperger. The Villa boss admitted yesterday he would need to trade players before making any further acquisitions but with the German available on a free, a return to Villa Park may not be out of the question. As Big Eck went on to say:

“Thomas’ name has been mentioned against a number of other players. If it came to a choice, we’d have to think about everything if we were able to get that choice. Maybe in midfield, in terms of experience, we are a little bit lacking.”

Roy Hodgson has offered Owen Hargreaves a contract at West Brom. The ex-Man United midfielder has seemingly proved his fitness to the Baggies boss and is now mulling over a move to the Hawthorns. Hodgson’s take on the situation is:

Look, we’ve done the test, we agree with you that the knee’s OK and you can play football. And of course if you’d like to come and play for us that would be lovely. But whether or not our offer is going to be interesting to him, that’s what I don’t know.

Stoke are in the market for six new signings, according to Tony Pulis . Speaking this morning, the Potters boss admitted he was looking to strengthen the club’s options up front before the end of August. With a bid in for Peter Crouch as well as Spurs team mate Wilson Palacios, it looks like being a busy three weeks ahead on the transfer front.

Both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri won’t feature tomorrow for Arsenal. The duo were left out of Arsenal’s squad for the trip to Newcastle by Arsene Wenger and their respective exits from the Emirates are edging closer by the day.

It looks like Joey Barton may still have a part to play at Newcastle, after all. Only a week or so ago, there seemed no way back for the midfielder after the twitter debacle that saw him criticise the club, but Alan Pardew is willing to offer him a chance if Barton can prove he’s willing to give his all:

Joey will determine whether he stays. I’ve told Joey that he won’t play for me and I won’t include him unless I think he’s pulling for us. If Joey turns around to me and says that’s what he’s going to do, then he will. He’s in the process of weighing up what he needs to do.

Anyone thinking WC for GW3? Reasons:

    1. International break, plenty of time for price rises.

    2. Lots of people still actively playing = more transfer activity, so more price changes.

    3. First elevens become more established, eg Arsenal, City.

    4. General patterns start to emerge - which are the strongest cheap defences, teams to avoid at all costs (eg Wigan last season - lots of people having to jump off the Figs, Nzog, Bosselli wagons)

    5. Transfer window closed.

    6. Some teams (eg Arsenal) fixutres improve.

Difficult to see it going any other way for me.

Yeah, unless I get ridiculously lucky and have picked the majority of my favoured squad (ie 10+ of the 15 would stay in a WC team), I'm pretty much assuming my season starts in GW4, with the first 3 weeks just a bonus to pick up a few points.

rvp is arsenal's main man now that fabregas and nasri have buggered off. his scoring record last year was second-to-none.

carroll had a good half-season with newcastle and thats it. for me, the jury is still out.

    Al Habsi (Given)

Jose Enrique - A Cole - Kompany (Gabbidon - Bardsley)

Moses - Taarabt - Silva - Nani (Sinclair)

    Holt - Bent - Carroll

I have 0.5 million in the bank because I was thinking of replacing Cole with Riise so that in GW2 I can upgrade Carroll to Drogba or Silva to Malouda if Chelsea start the season on fire again... Please let me knowyour thoughts and a captain choice would be much appreciated 🙂

Hi guys...If you could take a quick look at my team and tell me........

    Al-Habsi

    Bosingwa
    Figueroa
    Lescott

    O'Hara
    Nani
    Downing
    N'Zogbia

    Gervinho
    Drogba
    Carroll

    Ruddy
    Jose Enrique
    Dyer
    De Laet

..........Should i downgrade Gervinho and upgrade O'Hara,if so to which players.I was thinking Rodallega and Yaya with 0.5 left over...Will be swapping Al-Habsi for Given or Foster after game week 3+Carroll to Suarez as soon as he is starting games.

Any constructive sugestions please....Or should i just leave it as it is?

Feel like I settle on a team then think up another combination, although guess everyone is like this :p I know all the best players to pick just not sure how to fit them in and which ones.

Anyone think a chelsea defender is essential? Given their fixtures and generally reliable defence

What im basically struggling with is how much to spend on my defence? I want to just be playing 3 every week but should the GK and 3 defenders all be 'strong' or just some cheap ones which are unlikely to get me points regularly but allow more to be spent in midfield/attack? 🙁

      my back 3 consists of a 7.5 , 6.5, 5

it just depends if you see value. I'm happy having an expensive backline because I know it will reward me in the long term. it's your own discretion really. with defenders, you really do need to pay the price for quality.

I have 2 players who I really am hoping will be in line to start this weekend, and the upcoming gameweeks hopefully...

Can anyone add their thoughts on how much playing time they will get?

I know the 'Team News' section predicts otherwise but I'm not convinced by that at all.

    1) Smalling - very impressive at RB in the Community Shield last week, playing a considerable portion of the match.

    2) Albrighton - With Downing & Young leaving this Summer, I guessed it would be inevitable for Albrighton to step up as a regular on the wing.

    Cheers,

Smallling could well start this week, I think his selection against City was partly down to how big they are physically though. He's a rotation risk over the season but can play two positions. If you pick him some weeks he'll be a bargain and other weeks a waste of money.

Albrighton - looks like villa are playing a 4-2-3-1 and he's competing for the place. Again not nailed on and I think there are better options who are secure at that price. Didn't start the last pre season game and hard to tell with new managers etc.
