It was a night that saw the heavy-hitters deliver, as Sergio Aguero, Alexis Sanchez and Eden Hazard produced the goals and points to steer their teams to victories and put smiles on the faces of their Fantasy owners. Here’s the notes from Wednesday’s action…

BLUES BREEZE PAST SPURS

Chelsea overcame the absence of Diego Costa to storm past Tottenham in a performance that saw a number of their assets highlight their growing appeal. Didier Drogba was called up to replace the Spaniard up top and vindicated Jose Mourinho’s faith with a goal and an assist on his way to a double figure haul. It’s worth noting that Costa has failed to surpass the 10-point mark since Gameweek 4, and with Loic Remy also scoring from the bench yesterday, Mourinho was served a reminder that he can win matches without Costa if injuries and suspensions, or even fatigue, play their part.

Meanwhile, Eden Hazard got his name on the scoresheet once again: he has now found the back of the net in four consecutive home matches, a tally that has moved the Belgian level with Cesc Fabregas in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield rankings. Hazard’s last ten goals have all come in home matches. With Oscar also notching an assist, owners of Cesc Fabregas may now be edging towards a possible switch to one of his midfield teammates. The Spaniard has returned in five of his last eight league starts but is struggling to keep pace with Hazard’s goal power.

The Blues’ defence also earned points once again: they’ve now recorded clean sheets in four consecutive games in all competitions; Cesar Azpilicueta grabbed an assist and maximum bonus points, and, at 6.1, the left back looks the standout option in their rearguard right now as Branislav Ivanovic’s attacking returns continue to stall. Gary Cahill could be a doubt for the visit to Newcastle at the weekend having been forced off following a clash of heads. Indeed, with Nemanja Matic suspended for the weekend after earning his fifth booking last night, Chelsea’s defensive resolve may well be tested by Alan Pardew’s men.

POCHETTINO KEEPS FAITH IN KANE

Despite a miserable result for Spurs, Harry Kane’s owners will have been encouraged by the forward’s continued run of starts, and almost saw the youngster almost deliver returns once again only for his first half header rattled the crossbar. The 4.9 valued striker now has an excellent schedule ahead (CPL, swa, BUR, lei), and with Nacer Chadli benched again last night, the England Under-21 star, along with midfield schemer Christian Eriksen, remain the key targets on offer. It remains to be seen if Chadli can earn a recall for the visit of Palace, with Aaron Lennon again earning a start on the flank and Roberto Soldado likely to return to the Spurs teamsheet.

AGUERO THE ARMBAND HERO AGAIN

Sergio Aguero maintained his rampaging form with two goals and an assist as Man City triumphed where Chelsea failed, sweeping aside Sunderland with relative ease. The Argentine was at his clinical best, beating erstwhile teammate Costel Pantilimon with both of his attempts on target, whilst also setting up strike partner Stefan Jovetic. Augero earned 32 points for those who chose to hand him the Gameweek armband. The Argentine has now returned in seven of his last nine league starts, scoring 11 goals in the process, whilst collecting 14 bonus points. It’s hard to deny that he’s anything other than “essential” at this point in time. City’s schedule over the Christmas period is so favourable, it looks almost unthinkable to progress without Aguero – (EVE lei CPL wba BUR SUN). He’s currently owned by 35% of Fantasy Premier League managers – and rising.

As for Jovetic, last night was his third successive start, with the Montenegrin producing two goals and assist over that time, though his potential continues to be dented by Manuel Pellegrini’s insistence on subbing him off early – the 7.8 valued striker is yet to complete 90 minutes in the league this season.

SANCHEZ SINKS SAINTS LATE ON

Alexis Sanchez struck at the death to earn Arsenal a precious 1-0 win over Southampton, much to the relief of those who put faith in the Chilean with the Gameweek captaincy. Sanchez has now scored seven league goals in his last seven league starts, cementing his status as the “essential” component of our midfields. Quite simply, Arsenal’s alternative attacking targets are struggling to get close to offer suitable cover, with Danny Welbeck blanking once again before finding himself edging out to the left-flank with the introduction of Olivier Giroud from the bench. It’s one goal in six league outings for Welbkeck, while Aaron Ramsey’s output continues to disappoint – he has not found the net in the league since Gamweek 2.

At the back, the Gunners have now tallied three consecutive clean sheets in all competitions. Per Mertesaker, Calum Chambers and Laurent Koscielny all earned bonus points in last night’s win and we could now see a wave of investment in the trio ahead of Saturday’s trip to Stoke. Chambers’ budget-friendly 5.0 price tag is sure to tempt many, though Mathieu Debuchy’s scheduled return from injury next week dents the teenager’s appeal: stumping up the extra cash for centre-back duo Mertesaker and Koscielny looks the most sensible long-term option.

KOEMAN’S CASUALTIES MOUNTING UP

Southampton’s recent downturn in fortunes endured last night, with injuries to Dusan Tadic and Toby Alderweireld compounding their luckless to defeat. The Saints have now failed to find the net in their last two and have failed to collect a clean sheet since Gameweek 11, as their tough schedule continues to diminish hopes of maintaining their table topping challenge. With new injuries, plus doubts over midfield stalwart Morgan Schneirderlin’s fitness, Ronald Koeman’s resources look stretched ahead of the St Mary’s meeting with Man United. The recent struggle and Fantasy exodus looks destined to continue, then, with Graziano Pelle’s ownership unlikely to remain above the 25% by the time this weekend’s deadline arrives.

BELGIANS BLINKING BRIGHTLY ON THE RADAR

Romelu Lukaku took his total to four goals in his last seven outings with the Toffees’ single strike in their 1-1 stalemate with Hull. Meanwhile, Kevin Mirallas’ assist for his compatriot’s effort took him to two goals and two assists in his last three in all competitions; he was, however, subbed off early again as Roberto Martinez continues to ease him back into action. Meanwhile, it’s not so rosy at the back for the Toffees: the 23% owned Leighton Baines blanked for the third time in four appearances and with a trip to City up next, the FPL’s premium left-back is testing his owners’ patience. To compound matters, Everton have four of the next six on the road.

I reckon he'd be on the bench for a few weeks and then start. That's the 'Wenger way' of bringing back players from injury.

Soon as hes match fit, hes got it. Chambers may be a FPL lovechild, but hes still a rather average BPL defender.

        Do not agree at all!
Did you see the match yesterday? Chambers was MoM.. got through on the wing all the time, and rock solid defensively.
It's the other way around.. I think Wenger now sees Chambers as one of his best players, and not the 4,5 FPL pricetag that somehow makes people on this page believe he is not nailed on.

    Foster - Hamer
    Baines - Naylor - Saylor - Hutton - Moore
    Sanchez - Hazard - Sigurdsson - Fabregas - Marney
    Aguero - Rooney - Austin

1 FT and 0.6m in the bank.

    A. Rooney+Moore ➡ Benteke+Azpilicueta for -4
    B. Fabregas+Moore ➡ Eriksen+Azpilicueta for -4
    C. Rooney ➡ Benteke

I`d shed Saylor, if it were me. The rest look fine. Fabregas -> Eriksen could serve you well also. Newcastle usually put up a fight vs Chelsea, so idk about hitting in defenders this week.

      1. pundit of punts
        • 12 Years

Saylor is at least gonna start.

Moore on the other hand is out of favour. So was thinking of giving him the boot.

        I'm really tempted by Fab>Eriksen.

Is he though? 17 and 45 minutes in the last two after his long term injury. Moore is atleast pretty nailed on during Morgans suspension, so you can postpone that transfer. I`m tempted by Eriksen myself, and Fabregas seems to have cooled off after his abnormally high returns earlier. But then again, Fabregas always used to be really hot in the early stages of the season, always have been.

I think Saylor will come back into the starting 11 this week as he played the second half replacing Williamson. Moore gets only 1 game.

I'm starting to think that it's time to ship Fabregas.

Im not so sure. Regardless, Moore can do the work for one week and then you can get Azpilicueta the next week. I certainly am happy that i have Hazard over Fabregas, most of Cesc`s assists have been on random corners/freekicks, and while thats a good thing to have in your fpl assets, its just not sustainable.

    Krelliot Conundrum

Is now the time to resolve the GK situation? Us owners were mildly fortunate to have a playing keeper last gameweek but the next 9 games until possible WC prior to GW24 are:

CHE* ars SUN mun EVE BUR che SOT hul

*As far as I know, Elliot could still miss this weekend's game at Chelsea (a blessing in disguise perhaps) due to his child's birth.

Guzan looks particularly enticing as it transforms these GK fixtures to:

LEI wba SUN swa SUN BUR lei SOT hul

^ That is if you can keep Krul (I can't). Outlook is not quite as good if you have to keep Elliot; as Krul will be back at Xmas you'd lose the BUR SOT hul games at the end and be forced to play Guzan in CPL LIV ars (not disastrous but not quite as good).

I do have other problems in my team but just feel this could be the best (only) moment before WC that I would make a GK change. Rest of my team is:
Baines Azpi Chambers (Duff ALCARAZ < wtf)
    Hazard Sanchez Siggy Downing (Marney)
    Aguero Costa Austin

Pantis only good until GW19. After that:

        mci LIV tot BUR

As I have to keep Elliot, Panti would be my only playing keeper during that period compared to Guzan's CPL lei LIV ars. If you can keep Krul however, BUR LIV SOT BUR is great for that period.

WC time is end of Jan for me (provisionally).

Potentially it is the time to do this. You may as well take Krul out so you have two available keepers right now rather than planning around an uncertainty 1 month ahead. Injuries are rarely predictable?

I have Krulliot and am planning Krul > Guzan or Adrian this gameweek assuming nothing else comes up.

We'll have Elliot until Jan WCs but the motivations for still considering a GK change now are:

        1) Elliot's next 4 fixtures are awful.
        2) Not using your WC to change your keepers until end of Jan.

    But BEWARE guys.
Kun hasnt delivered back to back big scores.
    Also Everton aint pushovers.
We all knew Mci had a delicious fixture against Swans at home and we all backed Kun to deliver and he blanked.
Good thing is hes on form but will he deliver big?
Also they have an important game against Roma midweek.

Aguero at home grounds usually spell big trouble. Him not scoring when "we all" backed him against Swansea is just a drift from the norm. Everton are so vulnerable with McCarthy out and Distin in the side. My money`s on Aguero to deliver. The Roma game is important, but they cant drop momentum in the league either, and with Dzeko/Silva out they cant really rotate all too much.

Don't understand where this armbanding Kun every week comes from, I've been lucky enough so far to armband him when he's exploded and armband someone else when he's blanked.

People have very short memories, after his 19 point haul earlier this season he was flavour of the week around here and then he blanked straight after against West Ham.

Problem is, you don't captain him once, make marginal gains (e.g. Costa vs. WBA over Kun vs. Swans), then start to try to be clever and miss a big haul. At least that's what I did.

Nah. Just take the points if they come in and take that as a differential. If you have Aguero, most people will captain him and if he comes through again, you`ll suffer a huge loss.

I think it will be a very open game like against Leicester. QPR obvious eyeing these matches as ties they need to/should win. A decent option Im sure, but then again it is QPR and he is Aguero at home.

Fabianski is a great pick if you don't mind spending a bit extra, but then Naylor is cheaper.

I think most good Keeper options are more costlier than their defensive counterparts so I wouldn't let that put you off too much.

I will do Fortster > Guzan tomorrow I think.

    Heaton, Krul*
    Terry, Chambers, Clyne, Bruce*, Dummet
    Fab, Siggy, Sanchez, Jedi, Downing
    Costa, Austin, Kun

    2FT 0.7m

    1. Krul--> Guzan

I now own Hazard, Costa and Fabregas.

With the latter looking stuck in the deeper role, and providing assists, does it seem reasonable to get rid of him in a double move to get a Chelsea defender in who may get on the end of one of those assists?

Thinking Fab to Eriksen ( fixtures and form ) and then Clyne to Ivanovic ( man crush ).
