As always, there are plenty of topics on our pre-Gameweek radar as we start to prepare for another round of fixtures. Nacer Chadli’s pitch time, Chelsea’s away displays, the budget showdown at Loftus Road and Christian Benteke’s showing against Leicester are all amongst our Thursday dinnertime menu.

Chadli’s minutes against the Eagles…
After missing the Gameweek 12 trip to Hull through injury, the Belgian has warmed the Spurs bench for each of the last two as Mauricio Pochettino places his faith in Aaron Lennon instead. Having scored six times in the first 11 outings, Chadli’s goal threat has been key for the north London outfit and Fantasy managers alike but his appeal looks in danger right now. Having earned just over half an hour off the bench at the Bridge last night, he’ll be pushing for a start once again but with Christian Eriksen offering an in-form alternative in the Tottenham midfield, another place amongst the subs for Chadli will surely be the final straw for his 15% owners.

Hazard and Costa on their travels…
With their top scorer suspended in midweek, the Chelsea winger netted for the fourth successive home match and finally forced him way past Cesc Fabregas in the Fantasy standings. Hazard is yet to convince away from the Bridge, though, whilst Costa has cut a frustrating figure on his travels, earning yellow cards in all five of his road trips. With City breathing down their necks and racking up the goals, the duo will need to step up their displays against a Newcastle side that have conceded just three times in the last seven. Given that Chelsea now have four away trips in the next six, Jose Mourinho needs his big–hitters to produce with more regularity outside of west London.

The Austin and Ings shootout…
The budget pair carry excellent form into their weekend head-to-head at Loftus Road. Austin has five goals and an assist in his last six, whilst Ings has netted four times and served up an assist over the same period – both have offered returns well beyond our expectations and with their defences looking vulnerable, they have the chance to cement their place as our cut-price forward of choice over the festive period.

Liverpool’s recovery as the Black Cats pay visit…
Brendan Rodgers’ side have registered back-to-back wins for the first time this season and are hinting at a return to form as Sunderland arrive at Anfield. The return of Lucas to the starting XI seems to have stabilised the Reds and saw Steven Gerrard, Adam Lallana and Jordan Henderson all get amongst the goals in midweek. Aside from their midweek loss to City, Gus Poyet’s troops have looked tough to break down but another win for the home side may yet bring their assets back onto our radars.

Arsenal’s defence at the Britannia…
With three clean sheets in all competitions, the Gunners are finally hinting at a return to the form of 2013/14. Arsenal racked up 17 shut-outs last time around – second only to Chelsea – and the return of Laurent Koscielny seems to have steadied the ship in recent matches, suggesting they could be worthy of consideration again. Mathieu Debuchy’s imminent return could spell bad news for Calum Chambers owners and, at just 5.2, the Frenchman may well play his way into our plans once fully fit.

Benteke against the Foxes…
A first goal of the season at Palace on Tuesday could just be the spark the Villa forward needs. Up against a Leicester side with just one clean sheet in ten and devoid of suspended skipper Wes Morgan, Benteke is handed the perfect opportunity to notch again this weekend. With so much time spent on the sidelines, it’s easy to forget he scored 29 goals in the previous two seasons – another strike at the weekend could see him shake up our options in the mid-price bracket, with some excellent fixtures to follow.

Downing’s head-to-head with Siggy…
The duo sit second and fourth for chances created amongst midfielders this season and will be key to unlocking their opponents’ defences as the Hammers welcome Swansea to Upton Park. Owners will be looking for an improvement from the popular pair – Downing has just two home assists to his name, whilst Sigurdsson has blanked in every away match since Gameweek 1. Bearing in mind the Hammers have conceded just once in their last four at home, Siggy looks to have the tougher task here, whilst up front, Wilfried Bony’s form on the road is also a concern – he’s managed just three shots on target away from home all season.

Berahino’s form at the KC…
The West Brom youngster was a victim of his own versatility in midweek. Shifted to the left flank to accommodate Victor Anichebe up front, Berahino failed to score for the fifth successive Gameweek and with the likes of Ings and Austin offering in-form options in the same price-range, the 18%-owned Baggies forward could be on his last chance for many. A trip to Hull still offers hope of a turnaround but another blank or start on the wing should spark the exodus.

United’s assets at St Mary’s…
Slowly but surely, Louis van Gaal’s side are starting to click. Despite the loss of Angel di Maria and Wayne Rooney in midweek, United were still too strong for Stoke and racked up a fourth successive win ahead of their trip to Southampton. Marouane Fellaini and Juan Mata grabbed a goal apiece in midweek, whilst Andre Herrera provided a second assist in a row – question is, can they really offer a viable alternative to the stricken Di Maria in the Red Devils’ midfield, though? The Saints’ fixture list is bad enough but with injuries also afflicting their prospects, Ronald Koeman’s side look up against it on Monday night and United could well take advantage.

If you had Costa, Fabregas and Hazard....

...would you swap Fabregas for Eriksen?

Does having 3 Chelsea matter? Would also free up 1.5m for defence upgrade.

There are some interesting attitudes to risk-taking on this site.

Benching a player with a high price or ownership and a tough fixture generally sees the poster criticised for their foolishness. On the other hand, captaining a player with a low price or ownership and a good fixture generally sees the poster praised for their bravery.

Benching Baines away at Manchester City, given his ownership at around 50% in the top 10k, is a calculated risk, largely based on a one off fixture.

To my mind, it's no different to doing something like captaining Benteke at home to Leicester, who has less than 1% ownership in the top 10k.

You look at form, fixture, and ownership, and you weigh up the likelihood and impact of the possible outcomes. Hard and fast rules like 'always captain Aguero' or 'never bench Terry' are risk-averse, a style of play which works very well up to a point, but ultimately can only take you so far.

If you're willing to take a gamble that most others won't, to try and maximise your score and gain some ground on the masses, then I say fair play to you.

exactly this, if Baines wasn't on pens you would be far less likely to buy him, especially at 7m plus. A tough fixture doesn't automatically rule out a peno, thus never bench a peno taker

I'd extend this to all set-piece takers personally

Why is it a good post?

Baines is a penalty taker and penalties are totally unpredictable random events. They are totally fixture independent so you could be playing the best team on the planet and be getting hammered but still earn a penalty and score it.

I didn't see anyone mocking people who wanted to captain Benteke but its pretty logical reasoning to question benching a penalty taking defender you paid £7m for.

You're being silly now. Stop it.

You didn't pay £7m for Baines for his clean sheet potential. If you took away Baines pens no one would get him if he was £7m. You know that, as does every other bod whose posted this same bullsh*te on here, so stop trying to be clever with spurious reasoning.

But the fact is that you bought him for a reason and spent that much of your defensive budget on him.

Jedinak is another one that you would have gotten over other mids of the same price because of his pens but you wouldn't buy him as the most expensive player in your midfield would you.

Bench him if you want and knock yourself out. But don't come out with nonsense to justify what you well know is a risky move.

I don't think price should come into it. Baines is still offering value for money if you bench him away to City, Chelsea and Arsenal (for example) and play him in every other match. He's failed to get more than 2 points against Chelsea, Arsenal, United, Liverpool and Spurs so far. It's a risk, but taking risks is a viable tactic - he'll blank in these games more often than he scores.

Looks like you hit the nail on the head there. Doesn't matter if you paid 7m for someone. If you think he's not going to do better than others you bench him

All goals are totally unpredictable random events. Penalties are obviously not totally fixture independent. Have a look at teams who get the most over a season - the top teams always get more, it's why Gerrard dined off them to become a top prospect last year, yet Mark Noble wasn't bargain of the season despite playing every match. Everton are less likely to get a penalty in a tough fixture, and also less likely to get a CS. It reduces Baines's appeal - it doesn't guarantee you won't miss out on a haul if you bench him - but it does mean that he will blank away at top teams more often than he'll score well.

Don't know what's all these talk about in here..
I won't simply invest anymore than 5m on a defender, if he is not from Chelsea.

            And 7.3m for Baines ?

For what ? Just because he takes Penalties ? Because 15 clean sheets a season is not something Everton is capable of doing.

Anyways, as far as GW 15 goes, I m taking a punt on a certain Aly Cisskho. Anyone sees him to be a nice prospect for the next 5 or is it only me ?

It's a good post because the reasoning is sound and because it challenges silly mantras like 'never bench, never captain'.

Questioning people who bench Baines is fine too, but a lot of posts do it in a not very good way.

Got no problem with people benching Baines. What I don't get is why have him in the first place if you'll sit him for a tough game?

I can't see any reasonable justification of it. Not even the argument that he might not get a penalty.in this fixture.

You wouldn't have benched him this GW just gone against Hull, indeed probably some of the same people that captained him this week are talking about benching him this weekend. But he only ended up with 1 point against Hull. He could arguably lose against Man City but still end up with 7 points more than he got against Hull

Off the cuff, I'd say: have him because he'll get a large haul in CS against smaller teams, penalty goals, the odd FK goal, FK assists, corner assists and assists as one of the top bolt-on attacking full backs in a top-half team in the league.

But if you feel that e.g. Everton are going to lose due to superior opposition combined with a bad patch of form, and you have a "better" option that week (a cheaper defender against a bottom-three team who are blanking away from home regularly); then maybe sit him out.

Just because you spend 7m on someone doesn't mean you have to play them every single week of the season. Most, yes, but not every. Systems based on absolutes will always fail.

Fantasy is not about what you "feel".
Statistics. And you can't predict when Baines' points are coming in.
Will you bench Costa away against ManCity if Chelsea's form is poor?

              • 11 Years

On the contrary, it's all about what you feel. "Reason is and should always be the slave of the passions". You "feel" that following statistics is the best general approach. And you're right.

But if e.g. you're trying to catch two people who both have Baines as well, and you have statistical evidence (head to heads) that Everton will concede while hapless Leicester will not score against your cheaper DF who has been garnering BP, then you have every right to reason (and feel) that you can make up the gap.

The issue is that Baines isn't only about clean sheets. If you are paying extra for him, it's because all the other ways he can score. Would you bench Hazard away to City? Baines is a heavy hitter because he can get points against anyone.

Although he gets an extra point for each goal he scores, and 3 extra points for each clean sheet, don't forget that he also loses a point for every 2 goals that Everton concede in the same match.

So he would only have got 3 fewer points if he was listed as a midfielder (-2 for goals scored and -9 for clean sheets but +8 for goals conceded), assuming that he would still get the same baps (which probably isn't true). That would work out at 68 points from his 13 games, or 5.2 points per game.

That ppg is the same as Oscar (who is more expensive) and better than Downing (who is cheaper) but worse than Chadli and Siggy (who are both cheaper). So if his price was still the same he would be about the third best mid-price midfield option. As a defender, though, he has no such rivals, and you have to field at least 3 defenders.

You have him because he averages more points per game and per season than any other defender. There could still be the very occasional match where you expect 3 of your other defenders to outscore him, and it would be right to bench him in that case, but most of us do not have 3 other defenders of that quality. He should not be benched just because Everton have a very difficult fixture.

I think people might be missing the point on Baines - who I got in for a hit last week and captained purely on strength of fixture. This may have proved a mistake based on the following:

      1) Everton had lost at Spurs, confidence is low they don't look at solid as last season. Hull had taken some beatings so Bruce looked to shut up shop. Everton did not have a plan B to break them down.

      2) Mirallas to me seems to have had an impact on Baines - really would like to see a pitch position analysis of Everton last two games as to say when Pineaar is playing. He also takes some free kicks.

      3) Everton have a habit of having issues with relatively easy home midweek fixtures - I recall Palace last season.

      4) Baines is coming off an injury he may take time to get back up to speed.

I also brought in Baines as most of my ML rivals have him and I feel he is one that could leave me exposed if I don't have him. But I may have to look at this situation again and see if the Mirallas impact/Everton form is enough to think about maybe a Chelsea double up and using funds elsewhere.

I'm debating benching Baines for Hutton not because I think Hutton is a better player than Baines but because Villa are playing Leicester who haven't scored since the 1914 Christmas Truce!

It's a risky tactic but if it pays off it could reward handsomely!

Im not a huge fan of the baines 'rule. Although in most cases it holds true. However i think that away to City is probably one of those (perhaps one of only a couple per year) where its worth a calculated gamble on playing someone else (if you have a suitable replacement).

The key here is the calculation part, assessing that risk correctly to make sure its worth taking. For example. This weekend i think it might well be worth me playing Hutton over Baines.

It's a calculated gamble, but the combination of form and fixtures for both Baines and Hutton suggests that for one week only it may actually be the best choice. It might not work, but its when you take a risk and it pays off that the most pleasure comes in this game.

      Take a look at this:

      Baines = 71 points
      Costa = 70 points

Baines have two more games, but still...
In a "normal" season Baines would've had more than three CS by now.

          lol !
I'm just saying don't bench Baines.
He have more points than Costa, even when Everton can't keep CS's.
If Everton can start to keep tight back there, he will earn even more points.

So, the folk who rubbished your idea (and the poster who asked "Baines or Yun?") are looking pretty sheepish now, right?

Your post was spot on: many people take the basis of their deductive mathematical reasoning as pure logic and follow the rules rigidly based from there. That will get them a solid return. But the managers who win out will invariably make a few gambles based on other factors.

You simply can't slavishly follow a system based on rules for a game based on probabilities.

Hey guys little help...I'm wondering if I've benched the right players. This is my lineup as it stands:

    Forster
    Azpi/ Clichy/ Cresswell
    Erkisen(vc)/ Downing/ Hazard/ Sanchez
    Ings/ Austin/ Aguero(c)

    Bench: Heaton...Siggy/Caulker/Betrand

Siggy's not so good on the road but Downing tends to do better away from home. Also, Hazard's only picked up 2 assists on the road and Caulker's picked up points in 4/7 home matches and they up against Burnley.

Too risky to buy Chadli? He has the second highest PPG among midfielders, only costs 6.6 million and has games against Palace, Burnley and Leicester in the next 4! I think I'm going to talk myself into him and then watch sadly as he fails to break 200 minutes over the 4 and his price plummets

anyone tecchies out there help me? For some reason my taskbar has begun hiding itself behind anything that's open, I have no idea if I did anything, but I can't seem to get it back without minimizing things. What do I do?

      As The Clash famously sang...

      Lock the taskbar.
      Lock the taskbar..

If you're using windows, go to control panel and appearance and personalisation, click taskbar and start menu. Go to taskbar tab and click the box beside auto hide. Voila
