Our analysis of the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening as Fantasy managers quickly turn their attentions to the weekend’s fixtures. As always, we take a three-part approach, which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

After his midweek demolition of Sunderland, Sergio Aguero is head and shoulders above any other candidate as City prepare for the visit of Everton. Selected by 52% of voters so far, the Argentine – in spite of his superb season – has surprisingly blanked in three of his six home appearances and has managed only one double-figure haul at the Etihad to date. The Toffees roll up to Manchester in poor defensive form, though – without a clean sheet on their travels all season, Roberto Martinez’ side have conceded in five of the last six Gameweeks.

Chelsea duo Diego Costa and Eden Hazard are both fancied to deliver the goods away to Newcastle. Costa has delivered more yellow cards than goals on the road (five to four) and has notched just once in his last three away trips but having missed out due to suspension in midweek, he’ll be raring to go against the injury-hit Magpies. Hazard has yet to score on his travels this season – indeed, the Belgian has managed only two assists away from Stamford Bridge all season and has blanked in each of his last four appearances on the road.

Charlie Austin’s superb home form brings the QPR top scorer into consideration, with 7% of the votes cast. The budget striker has racked up four goals and two assists in his last four at Loftus Road and, up against a Burnley side with a single clean sheet on their travels, he’s looking for a third 10+ points haul in front of his own fans which would fire the R’s out of the drop zone.

After netting Villa’s winner at Palace on Tuesday evening, Christian Benteke is amongst the favourites for a plum home clash with Leicester. The Foxes arrive without suspended skipper Wes Morgan and look unlikely to improve a defensive record which has seen them keep out their opponents in just one of the last 10 Gameweeks.

Alexis Sanchez is also in contention as the Gunners roll up to Stoke. Unlike Chelsea’s Hazard, the Chilean has delivered on the road – four of his nine league goals have arrived outside of the Emirates, suggesting he could be a real differential against a Potters side with a single shut-out since Gameweek 3.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

That doesnt matter. Keepers wont give him open goals every week. Hes a good player still, not a good fpl option.

Well, 5th midfielders would just most of the time be left on your bench, so having a player that starts every game and is capable of some points now and then is basically everything you want. On that note i guess it really doesnt matter if you go with Cambiasso or Boyd or whoever, since theyll sit out most gw`s anyway.

yep and none of them have any real threat unless you want to splash so extra cash on jedinak for pens. But waste of money for your 5th mid if you ask me

    Krulliot
    Chambers, Hutton, Yun, Baines, Clyne
    Alexis, Hazard, Siggy, Chadli, Boyd
    Kun, Austin, Rooney

    .05 ITB and 1 FT

    a) Bring in a Chelsea def this week - HIT or lose Baines.
    b) Chelsea def next week - free.
    c) Fix Krulliot now - free Krul -> Guzan.
    d) Do nothing and save FT.

He had a few games alongside/tucked behind Welbeck. Mostly hes starting wide and switching flanks. Doesnt really matter where he plays, as long as he plays. At 11m hes hardly a steal whether or not hes "oop" or not.

The watchlist has Alexis as the only viable Oop. I myself See Walcott as an Oop every year - playing in a front three. When Alexis plays on the wing he's part of a Front three as well as Santi is playing the most advanced midfielder in a 433. Ehen Santi plays behind welbeck, he is the second strikter in a 4411 with Santi and ox on the wings. Basically he is Oop and FPL should have known it. He should have been a 9.5 striker and not a 10.5mid

Costa, Aguero, Hazard or Sanchez for captain? My thinking is Costa on the basis he will be fresh and perhaps Aguero can't keep banging in the goals every game. Thoughts?

    Foster (Krul)
    Baines Chambers Colo (Duff, Naylor)
    Sanchez Oscar Downing Chadli (Boyd)
    Costa Aguero Bony

    0.0 ITB, 2 FT

    1) Use 1 or 2 FTs to fix defence (ie Colo>Hutton or Krul>Guzan etc)
    2) Use both FTs and do something about Chadli
    3) Do -4 and upgrade Chambers to Azpi, downgrade Chadli to CRY mid, Hutton or similar for Colo..

Palace defence is shocking. Dunno who it was, but the cb just backed and backed and left that corner completely open for his goalie, which is like the totally opposite thing of what youre supposed to do, tactially speaking. That said, great work from Benteke.

I know Swansea are poor on the road. Bony is still kind of fixtureproof. Mind you, he is the player with most goals in the BPL all of 2014.

Yeah, I'm not too keen on losing him, but Austin/Kane are also in good form, have better short term fixtures and the extra cash enables an upgrade elsewhere.

        That's my logic anyway 😉

All the dead teams will still have him captain lol To be fair there are a few decent looking options alright this week but frankly captaining anyone over Kun at home in this form against a leaky defence is very risky business.

You're worried about dead team Badge? ha. Yeah I know he's in ripper form but Costa has had a weeks break, is league's 2nd best striker and up against a 'leakier' defence be it away from home

          1. BeachBadger
            • 12 Years

haha Not worried at all. Costa looks a good shout what with the rest and all. Little worried about his form though. Sure he'll probably score. But will he get more? Frankly if you want to go against Aguero this week, surely you'd have to be expecting 2 or more goals, otherwise it doesn't look worth the risk.

Yeah I suppose that's a good point. If I am expecting them to both get 1 and only 1, a lot more risk not captaining (C)un... Just think Costa being written off by a few, think he could easily be top scorer this round

I not writing him off. In fact I'd love it if he was. Stick it to all those who ditched him for Rooney. Theres another one who could come in off the radar. Austin and Benteke also have their merits but the risk is way too much. , I'll happily take my Costa, hazard, Austin points and kun 4pts if thats the case 😆

Anyone here thinks one of the liverpool players will come good ahead of their good fixture lists? I know many are not going to be tempted to own any pool players at all (defenders especially) due to poor form, rotation, congested fixtures with european and league games. However, who is the one good option to own if you have to pick one?

I am thinking Sterling or Henderson.

    1. ChampionoftheWorld
      • 11 Years
      11 years, 16 days ago

To add on, Henderson has an advantage with cheap price of 5.9, takes some set pieces and more so if Gerrard does not play. Could be a 4th midfielder option?

The trouble is, I own Siggy and Downing..

    Some interesting facts (Source Dailymail)

    - Arsenal would sit 16th one point over relegation zone without Sanchez goals

    - Man City would sit 8th without Aguero goals

    - Chelsea would stll be 1st without Diego Costa goals

I've read multiple times on here that Chadli will likely play this weekend. Chadli shoots a lot and doesn't pass when he should; I think he hurts Kane's chances.

maybe he will but i don't think there's any correlation between chadli playing and kane's output going down. is that just an observation? coz i am considering kane in this week. either him, austin or benteke

Thats not true. Chadli always prefers the easy pass instead of a shot or a dribbling. He's a teamplayer and too much so at times from a fantasy perspective. He's been spuds besten player this year
