Our final look back at Gameweek 16 assesses Tottenham’s in-form playmaker and United’s recent revival, whilst we also analyse the enforced tactical reshuffle at City, as Manuel Pellegrini prepares for the festive period with all three forwards looking likely to remain on the sidelines.

The Player

A goal and assist in Tottenham’s late win at the Liberty continued Christian Eriksen’s recent resurgence as a viable prospect for our five-man midfields. After spending the first few months in the shadow of team-mate Nacer Chadli, Eriksen’s class has prevailed and earned him third spot in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield rankings.

It’s been a remarkable, and rapid, turnaround for Eriksen in recent weeks. Subbed off at the break in Gameweek 10 and 11, he looked to have dropped down the pecking order under Mauricio Pochettino but has since played every minute of the last five league outings. Over that period, he’s racked up three goals, two assists and nine bonus points – playing a part in five of his side’s six goals from Gameweek 12 onwards – with Pochettino’s decision to drop Chadli from the starting XI allowing the Dane the chance to cement his place as Spurs’ number one midfielder.

Eriksen’s returns mirror last season, where he managed just one assist in the first 15 Gameweeks under Andre Villas-Boas before finally finding his form after Tim Sherwood took the helm. It’s taken the Dane – and, indeed, Tottenham – some time to adjust to Pochettino’s high pressing tactics but the approach is finally starting to reap reward. Still priced at a very reasonable 8.1, Eriksen’s place at the heart of his side’s attacks now looks cemented and with Burnley, Leicester, Palace and Sunderland in the next six, his ascent up the Fantasy standing looks set to continue.

The Team

It’s six successive wins now for Man United after a 3-0 home victory over Liverpool on Sunday afternoon. In a season blighted by injury and constant tactical tinkering, Louis van Gaal’s side have still managed to prevail and sit just eight points off the Premier League summit in third place.

Whilst talk of a title tilt looks a little off the mark, there’s no doubt Van Gaal’s side are on the up. David de Gea’s exploits between the sticks means United have conceded just three times in their six-match winning streak – all the more impressive given a lack of continuity in defence brought on by a seemingly never-ending injury crisis.

In midfield, Juan Mata has proven a more than able deputy in Angel di Maria’s absence, whilst Robin van Persie’s recent return to prominence has been perfectly timed – as Sergio Aguero owners look for a way out, the Dutchman has delivered three double-figure hauls in his last four to serve a reminder of his captaincy credentials. Despite being shuffled around Van Gaal’s XI from week-to-week, Wayne Rooney still managed to take his tally to three goals and an assist in the last four, as the Old Trafford outfit find their stride.

With no Capital One Cup or European exploits to concern them this season, United’s main men also look unlikely to succumb to rest and rotation – providing they can steer clear of injury, of course. Up next, showdowns with Villa, Newcastle, Spurs and Stoke over the next four affords Van Gaal’s regulars further chance to build momentum and force their way into our Fantasy plans.

The Talking Point

With Sergio Aguero sidelined for six weeks, our Fantasy faith in Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic had been all-too-briefly reignited as City travelled to Leicester last weekend. After the Montenegrin was ruled out of the Foxes clash, Dzeko looked in pole position to profit only to suffer a calf injury in the warm-up – leaving Manuel Pellegrini and Fantasy managers scrambling for answers.

City’s fixtures leading up to New Year’s Day (CPL, wba, BUR, SUN) scream out for investment. The champions carry outstanding form into this period, having won seven successive matches in all competitions, and finding a route into their attack could prove a prosperous move. Intriguingly, Pellegrini has afforded us a heads-up over his intentions, with Samir Nasri, David Silva and James Milner all set to be trialled as a false nine during training this week.

With Dzeko and Jovetic looking unlikely to recover in time, City’s midfield suddenly looks full of possibilities. Pellegrini’s comments certainly indicate Yaya Toure will remain in a deep-lying role and whilst his owners will be hoping for the usual dead-ball duties to keep him ticking over, Nasri and Silva offer plenty of competition in light of the weekend’s events. An advanced central role for Milner – priced at just 5.4 in FPL – would kick-start an almighty bandwagon if he can benefit from Pellegrini’s reshuffle, whilst at the back, a single goal conceded in four underlines their recent resilience and brings their backline onto our radars.

We may have been deprived of Aguero and, indeed, any able deputies up front for the champions, but Pellegrini’s shift of focus could still provide Fantasy managers with reason for festive cheer.

I'm sure Mirallas would want to start if he can, but it looked quite nasty. I think Martinez would prefer to go with a fit Pienaar and give Mirallas another week to recover.

The popular answer is keeping till Jan wildcard then reassessing.

As said above, many have more important things to do first than get rid of penalty taking defender. The week you get rid of him he'll score a 15 pointer.

That said though, theres a good argument to sell now and get Chelsea or City defenders and upgrade other areas.

Well it seemed like towards last season he was reaching that level with the fans (almost Dalgish levels), having said that he has done a great job at looking like a loon this season. He is similar to Wenger, stubborn to the point when you want to slap sense into him. You need to be stubborn to a certain extent but I think thats where Mou and SAF set themselves apart, they had their ways but were very aware when they needed to change something

Liverpool Echo's James Pearce one of the most trusted persons regarding LFC affairs has come out to suggest that the Transfer Committee (TC) could have made BR's work difficult at Anfield.

The sale of senior players on big wages and the signings that BR made this season were not totally his choice, but the committee's. Many managers refused to work under a sporting director when they were interviewed by FSG for the job before BR came in. FSG later set up this committee that is identical, or perhaps wields more power than a sporting director, whilst giving the idea that the manager is totally in charge. Whatever decision the manager makes with regards to signings and contracts, will be voted by 5 people in the committee. Only in the case of a majority vote, BR can sign the players he wants. Otherwise he has to improvise with the players chosen by the TC.

Pearce says BR NEVER wanted to sign Balotelli but was forced to settle for him. In other words, it was the TC that ultimately failed to replace Suarez despite getting big money by selling him. Pearce says BR also made it clear that he wanted Michel Vorm and that signing a GK is a priority. But he says the transfer committee refused to pay his value despite only spending over 30mil in net spending this summer. This also had a significant impact on Mignolet's form as LFC didn't try to provide competition for the Belgian.

Pearce says paying top bucks for Lovren made perfect sense at that point, as he was not one for the future, but was coming in as a top centre back, based on his form with the Saints and his Premier League experience. He was bought to hit the ground running. However he's had a major dip in form which is disappointing says Pearce. Similar tone has been voiced by Mike Bernard, a former employee of FSG, who said BR failing to see eye-to-eye with some of the TC members and their signings, is getting a little unsavoury. Mike noted that BR wanted Eriksen and Bony but was overruled. This also goes back to previous failures to show the money and securing players early when they had interest to move to LFC. Plenty of dragging negotiations and low-balling saw the failure of securing targets such as Willian, Salah, Mikhtaryan, Konoplyanka and more. Diego Costa was identified by BR as a transfer target when Costa was playing as a wing-forward, long before he became a star in that out-and-out striker position and caught the whole world's attention. TC thought his release clause of 20mil back then was too much. The rest is history.

While we drag our feet on targets, other clubs come into the picture, showed the money and swooped them as we watch helplessly. Even for Sanchez, Phil Thompson declared during the world cup that we had Sanchez in the bag. However too much negotiations into details and conditions in payment method allowed Arsenal to sneak in and turn his and his wife's head.

Pearce also does not believe with the popular excuse that BR got founded after Suarez left, and that it was the Uruguayan who made BR look good last season. He says BR's tactical acumen led the team prosper last season, not Suarez alone. The expectations has been raised by last season's football and LFC are struggling with the pressure now he adds. Pearce labels Borini's position as strange and wonders if it could be the club showing frustration against him, for not being able to secure 14mil from Sunderland and another 13mil from QPR. They're certainly making it clear to Borini that he shouldn't reject another deal in January. Another journo Graham Beecroft says Borini could have indicated that he rather sit on the bench and take the wages or run down his contract, than moving to a small club ie Sunderland, QPR who are also refusing to pay more wages than LFC. Could be the reason why he's strangely frozen. Could be the club's decision not the manager's.

The last time Pearce spoke to BR, the manager said Can and some of the new players are still trying to adapt to his philosophy of football and it could be the reason why BR resorts to playing those who know what is expected of them for now. But Pearce says he will speak to BR again about Can to find out more on his position. Pearce says LFC's season could depend on Sturridge coming back to be paired with Balotelli upfront, and then allow the rest of the team to click. Pearce doesn't know if FSG are willing to spend in January but it's a question of can they afford not to. As champions league new TV deal brings in over 40mil next season compared to 25mil before, he opines that LFC must spend. Especially on a top quality striker, taking into account Studge's fitness.

Sky Sports really are so annoying, when they are showing something they build it up as if the world is over after. Any big event not on Sky doesn't even get a mention. Today as they have signed Henry as a pundit (who I think is great) they are running a shrine of a website with about a million articles on him being the greatest ever despite him leaving the Prem in 8 years ago.

Same goes for boxing, if its Matchroom and on Sky impossible not to see it every 2 mins, any other big fight never happened.

    Baines - Clyne - Dummett
    Alexis - Yaya - Haz - Downing
    Costa - Bony - Austin

    Bench: Given, Yun, Boyd, Naylor

    1FT, 0.8m in the bank.

    Any Suggestions?

I have a similar team and am probably doing Clyne > Cresswell. Basically a one week defensive punt.

Thats the problem, I'm not sure we have any other options! Looked miles better with Giroud and think Wenger will want to keep the momentum. Also Giroud is not as explosive with running at pace, he tends to conserve his energy more so.

Should I use my FT to do Elliot -> 4.6 keeper?
    Current team:

    Guzan
Baines - Cahill - Wisdom (Chambers- Collins)
    Sanchez - Yaya - Oscar - Sigurdson ( Boyd)
    Rooney - Bony - Austin

Also need to get rid of collins but not really a priority.

No, don't waste it on a GK.

Just play Guzan for now and sort it out with the Jan WC.

Maybe lose Baines to Zaba with the FT, or else save it.

    11 years, 1 month ago

I have Guzan so far, doing ok-isch but not as well as expected, and lots of cash to spend (4.5 ITB), 1 FT also.

Would you upgrade to an expensive GK (Hart) until the end of the year, knowing that anyway you'll be able to wildcard in january for free ?

So that that money is not stuck on a goalkeeper forever.

This week is the week to do it, Guzan faces ManU and AVL defence will miss Hutton..
