Before we proceed with today’s planned coverage here on the site I thought it would be worthwhile to state our position when it comes to the current issues facing the Fantasy Premier League game.

The majority of our visitors will be well aware of the problems that have occurred – I don’t need to go over the issues with logins, the inability for those who were not logged to change their squads and then the absence of live scores. In all honesty, I can’t add anything to what you already know about those events.

We really don’t have a wealth of “inside information” on what has occurred. I did have contact with the FPL very late on Friday after the issues they faced forced a major traffic spike on our servers. On that occasion I was informed that there were issues with login and registration which were revealed by a surge in sign-ups on Friday. I was told that work would be done overnight to hopefully rectify the problem.

At that time I was forced to concentrate on our own issues – we had to provision more servers and get Fantasy Football Scout stable once again.

That’s the last communication and information available to me. I’ve had to concentrate on our site on the opening day of the season –traditionally one of the busiest in our year. I did make efforts to get more information and I will up those efforts today.

I will try to find out more then, to hopefully get some idea on what will be done to fix the problems and the frustration amongst us all. I feel it too and I want answers and reassurance as much as anyone.

In the meantime, we are going to go about our business and deliver you some articles – not to provide distraction, not because we’re hiding information or we’re ignoring what is going on over at the FPL, but because that’s what we do here. Through all the frustration, we have to carry on what we do.

Scout Notes on yesterday’s games are in the works.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So, Arsenal fighting for 5th with Liverpool? No trophies & no CL, like to see Arsene survive that.

If they follow the form of support at places like Facebook and Ebay you'll get a reply in about three months saying "Sorry for the inconvenience. Rest assured your complaints are being dealt with." from an automatic mailer.

Haven't heard about this extra wild card thing - I assume that's just an idea being banded around rather than something actually being considered?

I don't really see the harm in it to be honest as I don't really see anybody being dissadvantaed.

It was only my captaincy choice that I was going to change on Saturday and it may end up costing me points (I had Carroll!), but some people will have genuinely had their season ruined. Somebody in my mini league still has his i autocomplete team!

Autocomplete team? That's bad news. I messed around with my team trying different approaches and ended up with one I wouldn't have picked as I intended to put it back to a decent balanced team on Sat am.

I would say that would disadvantage those that actually made an effort to submit a team before the deadline so no I wouldn't be in favour of another wildcard.

Although it's pure conjecture at the moment, the idea of an extra wildcard seems relatively sensible and would presumably be the easiest thing to implement technically - certainly less faff than cancelling game week 1 (which I think is virtually certain NOT to happen).

Fortunately the results so far have been such that no-ones really going to be left behind (unless City cream Swansea on Monday - in which case I'll be fuming about the inability to swap in Silva for Downing before the deadline).

I stress I have no knowledge if this is even being considered, but I think it would be a fair solution that would appease most players.

I echo the comments someone made how everything just seems alot more user friendly and button clicky than I can ever remember all it seems to make the website more pretty looking. Before you could get in and out of peoples teams in one click which isn't possible any more.

If you tie a bow around a piece of crap...it might look nicer but at the end of the day it is still a lump of turd.

The bonus points delay isn't great...but is something I am sure we can get used to. No live points scores is a huge step backwards as it takes alot of the fun out of the game but hopefully that isn't going to be long term. But not being able to log on to the site from 8pm the day before the deadline was just plain terrible especially when it seems this was mainly because of the said website updates, most of which are not that special.

Tha said, full credit for ffs for being open about it now and I'm sure yesterday was a head in hands moment in the same way those who captained the new Aresnal numpty from yesterday.

I agree the old site was a lot more intuitive. The absence of live points updates is surely just a glitch in the wake of all the technical issues they've been having. Bonus points being added on monday is not a great deal imo. Rather have better allocation of the BP than the way they were distributed last season.

You really have to take into consideration that Cahill is incredibly unlikely to get any points in his next 5 games. A season isn't decided in a single gw and it's not really worth putting a player in you would only play 1 week in 6.

It was a reasonable decision based on form, ability and team Arse were playing, so don't worry about it. I'm only ever really annoyed when I captain some illogical choice (for example Boselli gw 1 last season) for very weak reasons.

I don't think it was just server load as you both say it's entirely expected and the numbers are pretty similar - i'd suspect it was more a problem with the new code.
And when people can't log-in in first time but keep trying the requests to the dbase clearly go up

Clearly there's been a number of mistakes made here that need to be addressed, but the former's happened already - it's all about the latter now. Hopefully we'll see a proper clarification from the FPL come Monday and if so the site will cover it and ask any obvious questions, until then I think we all need to just sit tight....and commiserate each other on a less than awesome first week.

        Remember, it's a marathon not a sprint!.

There has obviously been some internal issues with the running site that we will never know about but I am sure that it involves numerous departments all working with different plans and not talking to each other but ultimately forcing it all upon some understaffed technical team at the last minute who are already struggling to cope with the new technology and then be forcing them to make changes to the site every other day. Recipe for disaster. Why not just rework the previous seasons model? It's so frustrating.

It's like the new FFS members area. I use a netbook, the new site is a nightmare to use on it. Why wasn't it tested for this? Why isn't a lo-fi option available? This is really basic stuff.

Secondly, I wouldn't be surprised if we discover that the people involved with the new site have tried running some fancy application that has automated the whole process to update with external services. That would explain the lack of live updates. I bet when the servers crashed on Saturday morning there was one person alone in a data center feverishly trying to rectify the situation. Why didn't they take it offline for an hour or so for maintenance? The whole thing was a shambles.

There are so many issues with the site that FPL will be hit with a barrage of criticism this weekend, all of it justified and all of it of their own making.

All us hardened FFers wanted for this season were vice captains and objective BP allocations.

What we've got it a site that's a huge step backwards in every way and a set-up that's fundamentally less fun to use. Not being able to open it at work due to it not being compatible with old versions of IE as someone else mentioned is a big deal - bad for the user and bad for FPL's sponsors, who will get fewer hits.

It's a real shame - and completely avoidable - when companies forget what made them successful in the name of "progress".

What a complete failure from FPL from the start this year.

They had, by far, the best dream team site, they then decided to change that. Everything they have changed about has made the game worse.

From delaying the opening of the site, with no explanation to its users, to the major f**k up of the site crashing at the most vital time, again, still no explanation to its users!!!

As from some people saying that you should have had your team sorted before the last day, my logic was, pick a first draft team when the site opened, then come back the day before the deadline when all the tranfers have been completed by the premiership teams. The site crashing removes fair play, others had an advantage.

The last few seasons, the game had 2.4 million users, at the moment it has 1.8 million users. 600,000 less people, due to the late opening & site crashing.

How many of those users will not continue with their team now, after the massive failure this weekend? How many people will use a different site next season??

Massive failure from the site. My advice would be to go back to the format that will all loved. No need to change a thing from that site. Even when they get the new site working properly, it will still be less good than the original.

Unfortunately a lot of casual players - which from my six year experience of mini leagues - seems to be about 75% of registered users. The people we all know who forget to update it and then dont bother going forward all by September. These players will do this more now with all the hiccups FPL have had.

I suspect the live points thing may be permanent. Seems like, with the bonus, the plan this year is to update everything on a monday night. Huge step backward imo as much of the fun is seeing how teams have got on over the weekend.
Having said that I wonder if we would all be quite as pissed off if rvp caroll and other top picks had all scored big...and we were adding up huge points hauls in our heads rather than the pitiful tally most seem to have so far (think I'm on 10 with three to play).

I can't believe how many people still didn't have a proper team or had the wrong captain selected before the site crashed.

I would think if you were on this site, you would be pretty interested in Fantasy football and be prepared with your team a few days before.

Why on earth should people have to have their team sorted out days before the start of the season? Some might have chosen to, but why give FPL any kind of excuse for their poor performance by implying it was laziness or lack of interest on the part of players to blame for this mess.

        I'm surprised at that attitude.

Sometimes it's good not to have a knee-jerk response to complaints. People don't always whinge for "the sake of it". If you listen to what people are saying I think you'll find there are grounds for complaint here.

          +1.

Saying you should have had your team sorted well in advance assumes that many people on this site and outside of it do not have any other commitmnets in their life, like working 5 days per week, enjoying the summer holiday with their kids etc. I for one did a draft team on impulse on Thursday night but was going to finalise it on Friday night (silly me!).

As was said above, this attitude also serves to exonerate the incompetency in the management of this flagship Fantasy Football game. It's been an absolute embarrassment which deserves a full-blown apology/explanation directly from them. I also think that a concessionary wildcard should be given to everybody, as I think more people have lost out than gained from all of this. This would also keep the currents points totals intact although that in itself could be argued against.

Hear, hear. Agree that teams should be more or less worked out beforehand, but players shouldn't be forced into that position. Poor form on FPL's part, no need to apologise for it.

For instance, a half-decent player might re-jig their team for a cheeky speculative punt, and then pop out knowing they've got the morning to be sensible again, if they so desire.

          Helas.

It's not always about those on the site though. It's messed up my work H2H league for example as people couldn't get in time. Also, I like to have competition, I'd rather everyone was on a level playing field.

Maybe people were still waiting for transfers/injury news by the premiership clubs before agreeing on their final team???

Seriously, just cause you had your team complete, doesnt mean that others were wrong.

The deadline is there for a purpose.

The only reason i'm considering it is because Suarez's price is only going to keep rising, whilst Carroll is currently on the falls. I could really do with the extra 0.5m with the way prices are this season

Price is important but isn't everything. Carroll is the type of player that Arsenal struggle with and if he score he'll rise at the cost of someone else - the stupid cycle will continue.

It's a fairly decent reactionary signing to be fair, Geriviniho certainly p!ssed on anyone who brought him in.

Something about the start of the season and Arsenal's new signings getting a red?

Anyone who has entered a team in the past would have had a bad feeling as soon as they logged on this year. I hate this new format and am thinking of abandoning already. Fortunately I did lots of others too including Metro which has live points updates and an interesting points system where players gets points for shots on target, tackles, interceptions, clearances etc. Early days but much preferring that site so far this season. And you could accse it yesterday!

24 points on FPL so far with M Richards, Kompany, Cashley, Silva(c), Nani and Rooney to play.

Most technical updates are too tech-driven. Lots of nerdburgers getting excited about code and ferrets and widgets and gizmos. Not nearly enough time given to users testing it and finding faults in the gameplay and commenting on ease of use. This is just another example of that tech-dominated ethos. The really galling bit about it though is that they weren't working off of a blank sheet of paper. They had a really good game to build off of from last year. Why on earth they didn't just add some final tweaks to a version that was already 9/10ths brilliant is beyond me.

I hope they rectify some of these issues and faults asap. But I wouldn't be a bit surprised if we end up having to settle for an inferior product.

Cheers Mark. Seems ridiculous that FPL are so non-communicative with you. Rightly or wrongly people assume you're now in the loop with the official tie-in, so it would greatly benefit FPL to give you some info to pass on. That would be to presume they have any kind of clue about PR etc, so I guess we should forgot about that happening...

I have 12 points from 6 and 13 points sitting on my bench from 2 (Given & Simpson).

Same old story for me this season benching the wrong players. Well tbh I was always going to bench them so I can't really have any complaints but I always seem to bench the wrong players..

Odem killed me last year when I benched him 3 weeks running and he ran riot
