It’s time to make a booty call to Aleks Kolarov.

I predicted as much, way back on day one of the season and, this morning, the opportunity for that one-Gameweek stand with the Serbian is too good to turn down.

I can’t afford his barnstorming Argentinian team-mate: Pablo Zabaleta is just too rich for my blood without spending four points – something I’m really not keen to do when dealing with defensive trades.

Ron Vlaar or Alan Hutton are the other options but, in contrast to Kolarov, they’re so safe and sound I almost feel nauseous at the prospect.

The stars have aligned for Kolarov. Having returned from injury, he looks about 70:30 to start against Burnley and, if that doesn’t materialise, he’ll be 90:10 to take to the pitch against Sunderland a few days later. Eventually, he’ll get his run-out.

When he does start, he comes laden with promise. He threatens the goal more often than any other defender. He’s second only to Leighton Baines for chances created and, like Baines, he’s often all over dead-ball scenarios. Unlike Baines, he looks pretty assured of a clean sheet either today, or against the Black Cats.

I know this is just a short-term fling. I mentioned back in August that Kolarov can’t offer me security. But then, security and comfort can be overrated. Look at the aforementioned Baines. It all started so passionately – six assists and a goal in the first nine Gameweeks had my head in a spin. Now’s he’s given me nothing for two months.

I’m willing to work on my relationship with Baines – I know there’s something worth rekindling. However, for one week only, I’m going behind his back and allow my head to be turned by the enigmatic Serbian; let’s see if he can’t show me what I’ve been missing.

Don’t look at me like that: he’s my guilty pleasure. Sometimes this Fantasy manager just struggles to say “no” and one of those sometimes is now.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

These are the reasons why I'm picking Silva over Austin

    Last 3 GWs
    Silva 9.2m 15%OWN (30pts) vs Austin 6.3m 25%OWN (24pts)
Bookies have him favored to score over Austin (11/8) vs Silva (11/10)
5 pts vs 4 pts per 1 goal
Silva highly probable clean sheet point x 2
Man City is clearly a better squad 2nd vs 16th in table.
Will have more rested players, more possession, better defense
Pretty equal in terms of preferred fixture, both in relegation zone
    Burnley (19th) Away Record 8GP 1W 2D 5L GF5 GA15 (-10)
    Crystal Palace (18th) Away Record 9GP 1W 4D 4L GF10 GA15 (-6)
Crystal Palace may be motivated to play better due to Neil Warlock sack. Most players that support the manager will feel partly responsible for the decision.

    Who else is with me?
If not, please make your case for Austin.
Does the fact that Austin from England swaying your decision a bit?

QPR have scored 17 out of their 21 goals at Loftus Road

QPR have scored atleast 2 goals in each of their last 7 home games

Palace have conceded the 2nd highest no. of goals in the league

Palace have conceded atleast 2 goals in 6 of their 9 away games

Austin has scored in each of his last 5 home games, with 8 in total

And no, the fact he's from England has absolutely nothing to do with it. Strange point

The problem with Silva is that the goals can come from anywhere for City. Yaya, Nasri, Zab, Lamps, etc. Maybe even Jovetic if he gets a run out. So say City win 3-0 which seems reasonable, what are the chances that Silva will get those goals?

Of the 39 City have scored, Silva has 5 goals + 3 assists (e.g. involved in c.20% of goals)
Obviously he's been injured a bit, so cut that down to the 12 games that he's been in, there have been 25 goals scored, meaning Silva has been involved in 32% of goals.

Assuming a 3-0 win then, you could reasonably expect that Silva would score or assist in at least one goal.

(If you wanted to go absolutely macro you could say, what's the ratio without Aguero? In this case it's 3 matches player, 7 goals scored of which Silva scored 3 and assisted 1 - hence a ratio of c.57% involvement but the sample size is small).

On the flip side for QPR, Austin is their target - if they score (and you have to fancy they will vs a rudderless Palace out of form) then it's far more likely he'll get the points.
In the 21 goals QPR have score, Austin has 12 goals and 3 assists.
Of the 16 games he's played in, he's been involved in 15 out of 20 goals. In other words he's been involved in 75% of goals or almost 1 goal per game.

Assume a result like 2-1 and that QPR will score at least 2 against Palace and you've got to expect that Austin will score at least one.

Of course there are lies, damn lies and statistics AND there's the factor of an extra point per goal and point for clean sheet (which you'd have to expect City will claim) affecting things, but on goal-involvement alone it's hard to look further than Austin.

You make a great case. Thanks for your input, really appreciate it.
It's really close between them and will obviously impact this GW scores significantly.
Arguably, the most important decision of the GW.

Either way, I think both decisions can be justified in the end.

      -Austin pen taker
-Silva may get subbed prior to 60th min (unless they're doing badly)
-Palace conceded more recently than Burnley have
      -Austin home record

Having said that I don't have Silva or even Yaya as an option, but if I had I'd go for Yaya this game.

Not sure about country of birth but I do know plenty people who include/captain player(s) from the club they support even if it may not be the most logical choice. Definitely rose tinted specs but more rewarding when it actually comes off.

You have a bigger problem. You need to bench a player who should be starting, plus you don't have a proper keeper. Save your FT and use 2 FTs next week to sort that out.
