Once again, our pre-Gameweek members article, focussing on the main captaincy contenders, arrives this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

David Silva is the runaway leader of our Gameweek 20 Captain Poll ahead of Man City’s home clash with Sunderland. Four goals and an assist over his last three matches in Manuel Pellegrini’s false nine system has persuaded over 38% of voters to opt for the little Spaniard as the champions look to bounce back from their weekend home draw against Burnley. Four goals in his previous six earns Yaya Toure 5% backing here, despite concerns over the groin injury that kept him out of the Clarets’ clash.

Raheem Sterling and Charlie Austin are next in line with 9% of votes apiece. The former’s move to the central role up top saw him grab a goal against Burnley last Friday, and with visitors Leicester conceding at least twice in five of their last six road trips, the Reds will fancy their chances of a third straight win. Despite an unexpected blank at home to Palace on Sunday, Austin has still served up five goals and a pair of assists in his last four at Loftus Road ahead of the visit of Swansea.

Wayne Rooney remains in contention as Man United roll up to the Britannia. Stoke have registered back-to-back clean sheets but will do well to keep out their opponents, who have now gone nine matches unbeaten – Rooney has five goals and a pair of assists in his last seven.

Eden Hazard is the preferred Chelsea weapon of choice for the league leaders’ trip to White Hart Lane. The Belgian has earned 5% of votes after earning returns in each of his previous four appearances – Diego Costa, on the other hand, is trusted by just 2% of voters after scoring just twice in his last six.

Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke has been backed by 4% for the home encounter with managerless Palace. The big Belgian has produced returns in two of his last three at Villa Park and looks the man most likely to breach the Eagles’ backline.

Further down, the likes of Stewart Downing (2%) and Andy Carroll (1%) look real differentials as the Hammers host struggling West Brom, whilst Robin van Persie and Alexis Sanchez (2% and 1%) could also be worth considering, given their fine festive form.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Hello everyone! Could use some tips here. My current starting 11 is: Hart / Hutton, Ivanovic and N. Taylor / Downing, Hazard, Alexis and Silva / Austin, Costa and Kane. Bench is: Adrian / Clyne (injured), Skrtel (Suspended) and Jedinak (Unavailable). I'm considering to trade Jedinak for a new 5th midfielder (for which I would have £ 6,1 available) and drop Kane to the bench. Who should I replace Jedinak for?

    a) Sissoko;
    b) Henderson;
    c) Boyd;
    d) Milner;
    e) someone else.

    Thanks in advance.

        Regarding Henderson I'm just afraid Liverpool has too many players to share attacking potential with (Sterling, Coutinho, Lallana, Henderson, etc.). Boyd is an option, mainly because he has QPR and Palace at home next. But maybe a punt on Sissoko just for this gw could be a decent differential...

      Just checked the FPL history:

      Heaton 3.8ppg v Guzan 3.6ppg so not much difference there.

      However, the home cs provides a telling difference: Heaton 4 Guzan 2. If we are talking about rot, then it has to be Heaton with Pants. Not much in it mind.

    A) Yun -> Debuchy
    B) Eriksen -> Sterling/Lallana/Coutinho

    Might want Eriksen back after Che but Yaya -> Hazard planned for next week.

      Get rid of Yun, at least Eriksen will play and as you said you might want him back anyway so potentially going to cost you more too

    Moore -> Vlaar (free) and triple up on Aston Villa defence this week, and maybe next?

    Will remove one or two of them on WC obviously 😀

      i debated this and went coloccini instead. Know there is lots of noise in Newcastle re Pardew and Col poss being new manager but I reckon he will be right up for the next game.

    Considering bringing in Rooney for Costa, United definitely have the edge on fixtures in the short term - any thoughts?

      And in the long-term; they have great fixtures.

      I brought Rooney in; most nailed on in terms of starting, but also involvement in play, I reckon.

        Cheers mate - I've just never quite had the balls to get rid of Costa with his 55% ownership, could do damage to Newcastle in on the 11th and that would be down the rankings....

    I keep thinking my team is settled for tomorrow, but then I see a stat or a post that changes my mind completely 🙁

    If I'm going to get any work done at the office today, I'd appreciate any thoughts on this:

    Guzan

    Terry | Azpi | Zab

    Sanchez | Haz (V) | Yaya (C) | Downing | Siggy |

    Austin | Rooney
    -------------------------------------------------------------------

    Fabi; Kane, Hutton, Dummett

    Dilemma 1: Hutton or double CHE?

    Dilemma 2: Kane in for any attacking player?

      Swap Azpi to Hutton or even Dummett while you have Guzan in goal. I wouldn't double up on Chelsea defence vs Spurs

        I won't play Dummett, not with NEW and BUR in their respective forms, but I am very tempted to double up on AVL against a managerless/strikerless CPL.

        I just get the sense CHE will thrash TOT 🙁

        Thanks 🙂

              tis my differential for the week. By definition must be a bit contrarian otherwise everyone would be doing it !

      Great team. Logically it is sound, just a question of whether you want to spread the risk. Personally I'd probably bring in Hutton but that's on a knife edge.

      Kane is awesome but he is yet to prove himself against a really top class defence, correct to bench. Likelihood is at least one of your front 7 might be rested anyway so there's a solid chance he comes on anyway.

        Many thanks 🙂

        Really like your logic, too (although, that could be 'cos it is similar to mine haha).

        You're right, I'm really stuck between double AVL or double CHE 🙁 - never thought I would say that!

        Ideally, Siggy will be rested, Kane will score two and come in for him; Terry and Azpi will be rested and NEW and AVL keep clean sheets......that could happen, right...!?

          Stranger things have happened. Doubling up in defence can be great but it's sickening that moment when they concede and 8+ points go down the drain.

          That Spurs Chelsea game will be v nervy as you won't know if you made the right captaincy call until then either.

            Exactly, and it's the last game of the day. Uh, stress haha.

            I hate when they put the clean sheet points up with 30 mins to go - just don't do it!
