After days of speculation, Crystal Palace finally appointed Alan Pardew as manager on a three-and-a-half year contract. The former Newcastle boss inherits a side that currently sits third from bottom, though with the Eagles just three points behind 14th-placed Sunderland, the goal of clinching survival still looks clearly achievable.

With Tony Pulis vacating the hotseat just two days before the start of the season, Palace’s decision to hand Neil Warnock a second stint at the helm proved an unsuccessful venture. Despite suggestions that Pulis would return to carry on from last season’s superb turnaround, the club has instead turned to former player Pardew – a factor that proved crucial in his installation, according to chairman Steve Parish:

“We wanted a manager with a great track record and proven experience in the Barclays Premier League. In Alan we have both these things as well as a man who has great affection for this club and shares my determination to take us to the next level.”

The History

Famed for his winning goal against Liverpool in the 1990 FA Cup semi-final, Pardew’s playing career came to an end at Reading in 1998. After a brief stint as caretaker boss, he was appointed the Royals’ full-time manager the following year and navigated their passage to Division One in 2001-02. The following season, Reading reached the play-offs again, but their chances of back-to-back promotions were scuppered by Wolves.

Pardew then made his way to West Ham, where he steered the Upton Park outfit into the Premier League in 2004-05 but after two more years at the club, he was dismissed. The 53-yeard-old then had stints at Charlton and Southampton before taking over at Newcastle in 2010.

It’s fair to say Pardew’s time at St James’ Park was hit and miss. After ensuring his side’s survival in 2010/11, he earned Newcastle a spot in Europe the following season with a series of displays that saw them rack up 15 clean sheets and helped him win the Manager of the Year award. After just beating relegation with a 16th-place finish in 2012/13, the Magpies were safety ensconced in the security of tenth spot last time around but their start to the current campaign is indicative of their general lack of consistency.

Newcastle earned a mere four points in their opening seven matches before embarking on a run of five straight wins which culminated in their 2-1 defeat of previously unbeaten Chelsea. The Tyneside team had won five of their last six home matches under Pardew and once again sit in tenth position – currently ten points clear of Palace.

The Previous Regime

Warnock’s return to Selhurst Park soon dissolved the resilience so admirably instilled by Pulis. After conceding just 27 goals in 26 matches under the former Stoke boss, the Eagles backline has quickly become a no-go area – shipping 30 goals in 18 Gameweeks under Warnock, with just three clean sheets accrued. Since then, though, caretaker boss Keith Millen has helped them chalk up back-to-back shut-outs against QPR and Villa, reminding us of their capabilities.

Going forward, though, Palace have struggled badly in recent outings. At the start of the season they somewhat atoned for their lack of defensive solidity by netting 18 times in the opening 13 Gameweeks but have since scored just two goals in the last seven rounds of fixtures.

The Remainder of the Season

Pardew’s tenure is up and running after a 4-0 FA Cup win over Dover at the weekend. According to the Palace official site, the new man in charge rolled out a 4-3-3 formation, with Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha on either side of Glenn Murray, and after the match, he was quick to talk up the emphasis on attack, with a determination for his team to take more chances in the final third:

“I really did change my formation today, really and truly to say to the team, that we need to put the ball at risk. I was trying to get the message to the team that we need to have a bit more attacking oomph, so to speak. We are not going to stay in the Premier League unless we express ourselves. I’m going to promise the fans two things – one that we’re going to put the ball at risk and two that we’re going to have a go. ”

Bearing in mind he’s publicly declared his plans to attack, then, the jury is perhaps out on the Palace defence. Indeed, after 20 matches Newcastle and Palace are identical for shut-outs (five apiece) suggesting that the likes of Joel Ward, Scott Dann and co. may struggle to force a way back onto our Fantasy radars – aside from Tim Krul and Daryl Janmaat, no Magpies defensive option has surpassed three points per appearance in the Fantasy Premier League game under Pardew.

Undoubtedly, the departure of key man Mile Jedinak and Yannick Bolasie on international commitments has hampered Pardew’s plans. With six goals and seven assists between them, the budget pair have played a significant part in their side’s attacking fortunes and with both potentially out of the picture until next month, the Eagles need to re-group.

Elsewhere in midfield, Jason Puncheon was surprisingly left on the bench against Dover, with Pardew handing Barry Bannan a spot in the central three – the Scot (who has played 93 minutes all season) was afforded set-piece duties and bagged two assists to suggest he may come in from the cold.

Zaha’s pace on the flanks could also prove a key weapon under the new manager, though it’s clear the Palace boss needs to address his strikers’ lack of impact. Marouane Chamakh, Dwight Gayle and Fraizer Campbell have six goals between them all season and, given that Papiss Cisse netted nine for Newcastle and Ayoze Perez chipped in with five, Pardew needs to hit the January sales to boost his side’s survival bid.

Fortunately for the Eagles boss, the upcoming schedule affords him the chance to kick on from that weekend win. Four home matches (TOT, EVE, NEW, ARS) in the next six, allied with trips to relegation rivals Burnley and Leicester, give the homecoming hero the chance to build momentum as he attempts to replicate Pulis’s feats and steer the London club to safety.

On the topic of Fabregas's potential regression:

The guy has 8 assists already this season (in all competitions) directly from corners and free kicks. With Terry, Ivanovic, Cahill, Matic and Costa or Drogba in the team, that's at least one source of points that isn't going to dry up. At Arsenal and Barcelona, set pieces were never such a big chunk of his attacking returns - he's not used to having so many big lumps to aim at!

Its also notable that he dropped off a lot more at Barca than at Arsenal. At Chelsea, he is the main creator in the middle, as he was at Arsenal. At Barcelona, they have a carousel of passers ready to take over that responsibility. Fabregas now sees more of the ball in important areas, as they always look to him, not Messi, Iniesta or Xavi in a pocket of space. If he stops performing, Chelsea will stop scoring. What I think is more likely is that he may need the occasional rest from being the star all the time, but I don't expect him to be any less brilliant.

Totally agree. A player's output highly depends on the quality of other players around him, plus the opportunities given. At Arsenal, he had the legendary but ball hog Henry. And then at Barca there was an exodus of ball playing midfielder. Nowadays, he's the creative source of the team.

Also likely to get more games in the hole because Oscar gets tired as the season goes on.

I think I'm going to get him over Costa - but not having Costa for (EVE, BUR) will be terrifying.

Pretty sure he used to get quite a few assists by knocking set pieces onto Adebayor's head at Arsenal (had both in FPL one year - was fantastic) Otherwise I agree with this.

The million dollar question. With walcott nearly back and chadli firing I'm thinking costa as you can still pick a strong midfield of Sanchez, ADM, Hazard, Walcott/Chadli, Boyd. Not many other strikers (bar aguero), that give as much consistency as Costa......unless Austin/Kane keep firing.

Cesc is better value, but because there aren't many strong forward options and plenty of good mids, I think Costa is the way to go.

Makes sense if you're set on 3-4-3. But I'd rather set up in 3-5-2 and make the most of all these midfield options.

This. So many decent cheap forwards makes this viable. For me the fact Fab can get 8 to 11 with one goal or assist makes him much better value over Costa.

          1. Piggs Boson
            • 14 Years

The cheap forwards are much better value than Costa, but they won't get near the amount of of points he'll score imo. I find it's better to get the high pts scorers in attack, and look for value elsewhere.

            1. ZiDan

In the past I would agree but this year I think the best mids will outperform the best forwards and I prefer hazard and fab over Costa. I think I normally have five premium mid or forwards and that won't change but maybe only one or two upfront. In reality we are all flexible and if Falcoa starts scoring for fun I may downgrade elsewhere but don't think an automatic decision this year.

    So... I'm still on this...

If wildcarding now… (which I am)

    The Maverick 3-5-2 wildcard:

    Guzan/Pants
    Lescott Terry Bertrand Hutton PVA
Di Maria Sanchez Fab Hazard Silva
    Ings Kane Austin
    RMT This Week: 58
    RMT 8 Weeks: 438

    The Sensible 3-4-3 wildcard:

    Same Back Line
Sanchez Hazard Silva or Di Maria Chadli Siggy
    Costa Kane Austin/Ings
    RMT This Week: 58
RMT 8 Weeks: 439 (nothing in it)

I’m sorry, but every time I look at it I prefer the Maverick 3-5-2 one. That midfield will just get you two goals and two assists almost every single week and is fixture proof.

big if there. Even if he scores 5 in 3 (which is terribly big asking), I still believe that JT and Fab (and Haz obviously) are better CHE players to own, due to consistency factor and bonus points, hence I'd have no qualm ditching him then.

Out of interest. It's being taking as read on here to have three chelsea players. A defender, Hazard and then one of Fab or Costa. Is this right? Does it not break the usual don't have three players from one team and miss out on cover from another rule? Most teams I've seen are missing out one of Pool, City or United as a result. Team who WILL score goals almost every week.

    Thoughts?

I don't think there's such a rule as don't have three from any team, I think the only thing that matters is getting those who will get points. All three Chelsea players will.

Why would you want a Liverpool player? United's assets are also all overpriced. City's only option is Silva with everyone else injured/off to ACON/rotation risks.

Never heard that rule to be honest. When the best teams have good fixtures I always have three. Difference this year Chelsea are better prospects so worth doing regardless. For some like me I would lose a lot of value if get rid hazard or fab so harder to scale down.

Cover is largely a myth. Fab and Haz will be in the top 4 midfielders at the end of the season, Terry will be in the top 3 or 4 defenders, and Costa will be in the top 3 strikers. Chelsea aren't a risk, it's irrelevant that they play for the same team.

What's the best WC strategy for managers who are playing catch up in their mini-leagues and are also at a budget disadvantage?

Given that statistically there are likely to be more CS in the 2nd half of the season i'm considering going with a very cheap striker (as well as Kane) and a budget mid with the idea of having a defence where I can play 4 or 5 defs when the fixtures are favourable.

I'm also considering having a couple of double ups in defence as an all or nothing strategy as i'm too far behind to expect to catch up with conventional tactics.

Choose the best players always, you can catch up. But if it's a very big lead, you will need the diferentials that everyone classes as second best and hope and pray (eriksen, sterling, arsenal defence, man united defence)

ramsey, de jong when he comes back, dzeko. They all have to play 90 mins and a chance of big scores. You can't get someone like lampard and wish for a hattrick because it won't happen.

I have been thinking about this as well. Looking from when I will take the w/c (probably GW23) it looks like WBA and Stoke have decent fixtures. WBA have the Pulis effect and Stoke are fundamentally still a good defensive side.

For that reason I'll probably gamble on Foster-Myhill at GK to save some cash and have an addirtional WBA defender (Wisdom or Poccognoli depending on Pulis' team selection) as well as at least one Stoke defender (Pieters or Cameron if he stays in the team).

This is my first FPL season and I didn't realise how important TV was until now. But a clever defensive selection with only one or even no premium defenders seems the best way out if you have a low TV.

I originally wrote this out as the 2 full 15 men squads, now I've written it this way it seems obvious but I'll ask the question anyway:

    A) Pantilimon, Ward & Di Maria
    or
    B) Hart, Cresswell & Sigurdsson

Would you get zab out for a cheaper defender this GW? i.e trippier?

    Guzan (Given)

    zab, baines, azpi (Naylor, Hutton)
    eriksen, sanchez, hazard, siggy (downing)
    Costa, Kane, Austin

Tinkering away with a 3-5-2 WC now...

There are just far more midfielders I want than forwards. Liverpool have an excellent run of fixtures for example, but no real strikers available. Sanchez is effectively OOP, I prefer Fabregas to Costa for the money, and ADM's heat map will probably show him as being more advanced than Rooney.

    So, that leaves me with:

    Courtois

    Debuchy - Alderweireld - Trippier

    Sanchez - Sterling - Fabregas - ADM - Hazard

    RVP (Aguero placeholder) - Kane
    -------------------------------------------------------------------
Hamer - Barnes - Van Aanholt - Cameron

    0.0 ITB.

    Your thoughts?

          Nothing wrong with Kane.

          I would prefer 2 x 4.5m keepers
          Downgrade Depoochy
Anyway of upgrading Alderw to Berty?
          Trippier is way to expensive

How does everyone feel about this front line once Aguero is fully fit

    Kun----Giroud----Kane

Note: Kun and Kane(if he maintains good form) pick themselves. I
Giroud because Arsenals Fixtures from now until the end of the season look promising and he will be the focal point of their attacks.

    What do you guys think?

Could be my front line come GW23. Considering Giroud or Pelle. But then, before Aguero is fully fit, anything can happen.

After a lot of tinkering with my WC team and some really good advice from DT .. I have came up with this team !

    Foster
    Wisdom Terry Bertrand
    Angel Hazard Sanchez Siggy
    Giroud Costa Kane

    Pants Hutton Boyd Pva

Plenty itb for Aguero when he's fit.

So, is Bertrand's price ever going to rise? He's over 300% at fiso now...

Considering Mangala to Lescott this week. The city bomb scare has let me down massively over Christmas/New Year and with Pulis now at the helm, WBA defensive options are that much more attractive. Thoughts?

Am I the only one going with 2 Chelsea on WC?

I think Hazard and Terry is enough. I may get Fabs but it depends on Theo as my plan to have 4 big mids and Siggy plus Kun, Kane and a playable budget striker
