Moving Target

Moving Target – Alan Pardew

After days of speculation, Crystal Palace finally appointed Alan Pardew as manager on a three-and-a-half year contract. The former Newcastle boss inherits a side that currently sits third from bottom, though with the Eagles just three points behind 14th-placed Sunderland, the goal of clinching survival still looks clearly achievable.

With Tony Pulis vacating the hotseat just two days before the start of the season, Palace’s decision to hand Neil Warnock a second stint at the helm proved an unsuccessful venture. Despite suggestions that Pulis would return to carry on from last season’s superb turnaround, the club has instead turned to former player Pardew – a factor that proved crucial in his installation, according to chairman Steve Parish:

“We wanted a manager with a great track record and proven experience in the Barclays Premier League. In Alan we have both these things as well as a man who has great affection for this club and shares my determination to take us to the next level.”

The History

Famed for his winning goal against Liverpool in the 1990 FA Cup semi-final, Pardew’s playing career came to an end at Reading in 1998. After a brief stint as caretaker boss, he was appointed the Royals’ full-time manager the following year and navigated their passage to Division One in 2001-02. The following season, Reading reached the play-offs again, but their chances of back-to-back promotions were scuppered by Wolves.

Pardew then made his way to West Ham, where he steered the Upton Park outfit into the Premier League in 2004-05 but after two more years at the club, he was dismissed. The 53-yeard-old then had stints at Charlton and Southampton before taking over at Newcastle in 2010.

It’s fair to say Pardew’s time at St James’ Park was hit and miss. After ensuring his side’s survival in 2010/11, he earned Newcastle a spot in Europe the following season with a series of displays that saw them rack up 15 clean sheets and helped him win the Manager of the Year award. After just beating relegation with a 16th-place finish in 2012/13, the Magpies were safety ensconced in the security of tenth spot last time around but their start to the current campaign is indicative of their general lack of consistency.

Newcastle earned a mere four points in their opening seven matches before embarking on a run of five straight wins which culminated in their 2-1 defeat of previously unbeaten Chelsea. The Tyneside team had won five of their last six home matches under Pardew and once again sit in tenth position – currently ten points clear of Palace.

The Previous Regime

Warnock’s return to Selhurst Park soon dissolved the resilience so admirably instilled by Pulis. After conceding just 27 goals in 26 matches under the former Stoke boss, the Eagles backline has quickly become a no-go area – shipping 30 goals in 18 Gameweeks under Warnock, with just three clean sheets accrued. Since then, though, caretaker boss Keith Millen has helped them chalk up back-to-back shut-outs against QPR and Villa, reminding us of their capabilities.

Going forward, though, Palace have struggled badly in recent outings. At the start of the season they somewhat atoned for their lack of defensive solidity by netting 18 times in the opening 13 Gameweeks but have since scored just two goals in the last seven rounds of fixtures.

The Remainder of the Season

Pardew’s tenure is up and running after a 4-0 FA Cup win over Dover at the weekend. According to the Palace official site, the new man in charge rolled out a 4-3-3 formation, with Dwight Gayle and Wilfried Zaha on either side of Glenn Murray, and after the match, he was quick to talk up the emphasis on attack, with a determination for his team to take more chances in the final third:

“I really did change my formation today, really and truly to say to the team, that we need to put the ball at risk. I was trying to get the message to the team that we need to have a bit more attacking oomph, so to speak. We are not going to stay in the Premier League unless we express ourselves. I’m going to promise the fans two things – one that we’re going to put the ball at risk and two that we’re going to have a go. ”

Bearing in mind he’s publicly declared his plans to attack, then, the jury is perhaps out on the Palace defence. Indeed, after 20 matches Newcastle and Palace are identical for shut-outs (five apiece) suggesting that the likes of Joel Ward, Scott Dann and co. may struggle to force a way back onto our Fantasy radars – aside from Tim Krul and Daryl Janmaat, no Magpies defensive option has surpassed three points per appearance in the Fantasy Premier League game under Pardew.

Undoubtedly, the departure of key man Mile Jedinak and Yannick Bolasie on international commitments has hampered Pardew’s plans. With six goals and seven assists between them, the budget pair have played a significant part in their side’s attacking fortunes and with both potentially out of the picture until next month, the Eagles need to re-group.

Elsewhere in midfield, Jason Puncheon was surprisingly left on the bench against Dover, with Pardew handing Barry Bannan a spot in the central three – the Scot (who has played 93 minutes all season) was afforded set-piece duties and bagged two assists to suggest he may come in from the cold.

Zaha’s pace on the flanks could also prove a key weapon under the new manager, though it’s clear the Palace boss needs to address his strikers’ lack of impact. Marouane Chamakh, Dwight Gayle and Fraizer Campbell have six goals between them all season and, given that Papiss Cisse netted nine for Newcastle and Ayoze Perez chipped in with five, Pardew needs to hit the January sales to boost his side’s survival bid.

Fortunately for the Eagles boss, the upcoming schedule affords him the chance to kick on from that weekend win. Four home matches (TOT, EVE, NEW, ARS) in the next six, allied with trips to relegation rivals Burnley and Leicester, give the homecoming hero the chance to build momentum as he attempts to replicate Pulis’s feats and steer the London club to safety.

Considering Mangala to Lescott this week. The city bomb scare has let me down massively over Christmas/New Year and with Pulis now at the helm, WBA defensive options are that much more attractive. Thoughts?

My best transfer for the festive period was Saylor > Terry. But Giroud(c) in for -4 and no Kane while ML rivals played him destroyed it.

Hutton(lei), Wisdom (HUL), Chambers (mun), P.Jones (SOU)

    Hello everyone

I've read this site for a while and a friend of mine uses it, so I have joined today!

My wildcard is activated. Could I please ask for some advice?

    I am considering two options:

    1. 5 man midfield with striker rotation

Sanchez - Fabregas - Hazard - Di Maria - Chadli

    Austin - Giroud - Kane

    2. 3-4-3 with Boyd as my permanent sub

Sanchez - Hazard - Di Maria - Chadli

Kane (or maybe Austin) - Costa - Giroud

Thanks for any advice you can offer!

I am worried about not owning Fabregas. Do you think I should sell Costa and replace Chadli (as I own Terry as well)?

depends on where you're ranked. Personally, I'll be going with Fab over Costa on WC.

But I wouldn't want Austin on a wildcard.

  4. The case for 3-5-2

Players averaging 5 points a game or more so far this season:

    Keepers/Defenders: Pantilimon, Bertrand, Clichy.
Midfielders: Sanchez, Hazard, Silva, Fabregas, Chadli, Di Maria, Sigurdsson, Downing, Yaya*, Eriksen.
Forwards: Aguero, Costa, Austin, Cisse*, Sakho*, Kane.

Hazard and Fabregas outscoring Costa, Di Maria outscoring Rooney/Falcao/RVP, even Chadli, Downing and Siggy have scored at a greater rate than Kane, Sakho and Bony.

With the exception of Aguero, streets ahead on 7 PPG, midfielders have been king so far this season. So why not go 3-5-2 with Aguero and two cheap strikers? There's certainly no shortage of value options up front to make it work long term.

Finding those two cheap strikers is key.

Remember the legendary Pwer 5? It was successful because there was this unsung hero - Ba. We need Kane/Ings/Austin/Bera or the mid-bracket Pelle/Giroud to perform on cosistent basis in order to achieve it again.

Terry and Clyne on 4.8, 5 was just an arbitrary cut off point. I'd still want a Chelsea and Southampton defender, 3-4-3 or 3-5-2.

In a 3-4-3, he has a value as a striker performing at a premium level.

But with 3-5-2, you could actually keep the same team elsewhere, and do a straight swap from Costa to Fabregas, freeing up 1.5m. For example, Boyd and Costa are the same price as Fabregas and Austin for me.

I try to get 0.65ppg per million spent.

The logic is that you need around 60points per GW or 5pt per player (11 + captain)

With a starting team value of 100 and a bench of about 18mm, that's 82mln for the starting 11.

      55/82 = 0.67

      If a player costs 6.5 for example, his expected return is 6.5 x 0.67 = 4.35 ppg

Chadli at 5.4ppg is very good value. Same applies to Kane, Austin, Siggy, Downing, etc...

The 'moneyball' strategy works to an extent but only if money is sparse. When your team value is high and there are lots of good value selections available, you can afford to select a high scoring bad value player. Otherwise you would find yourself with money in the bank when it could be making you points. You also have to consider that a consistent, high scoring player who is deemed bad value according to that calculation could become a good value option when you consider the additional points from the times that you captain them.

I would say the 'moneyball' approach is your default strategy but you should accept poor value in certain situations. This will definitely result in a higher points total.

      > So why not go 3-5-2 with Aguero and two cheap strikers?

      1. Rotation headaches...
      - Anecdotally, who started Austin away to Arsenal or benched Kane vs. Chelsea?

      - From a statistical approach; look at the bookmakers *Any Time* goal scoring odds each week & you'll see it's a very tricky proposition for us in choosing who to start.

Take this week's Any Time goal scoring odds for example:
      Kane 13/10 (1.3)
      Ings 7/5 (1.4)
      Austin's 8/5 (1.6)

Facing odds that close each week, how can we be expected to make the correct choice over the long term?

Now, I realise we're all FPL experts here 😉 but, the math is the math & these odds say we're just about as likely to guess the result of a coin toss as we are to pick who'll score out of those three this week.
Now, imagine trying to pick that coin toss this week, & then again every week until the season ends in May. (I know the odds are worse than a 50/50 proposition but, for argument's sake let's go with it.)

      2. $ = Points

So, when we play a 352 we're benching anywhere between 5.5 to 6.5mil on a weekly basis.

Conversely, when we play a 343, we're only benching a 4.5mil mid & this difference of having an extra 1mil to 1.5mil on the pitch each week will impact our bottom line.

Side note: The *value* mids have been paying off nicely this year as well.
As, Wanyama & Boyd have both performed admirably when called upon this year.

      3. Value strikers are a very rare find, & typically difficult to replace.

Well, early season darlings Berahino & Ulloa have been replaced by Austin & Kane.
And, now what should we do if these two find a run of poor form or get injured?
Well, we'll simply transfer them out!
Not so fast though, because at their price it effectively takes 2FT's to replace them because, they're no other similarly priced options, meaning we've got to find the cash from elsewhere to fund purchasing a normally priced option up front.

In the end, Berahino,Ulloa, Austin & Kane have been great to have around but, I don't feel the 352 can be a viable long-term strategy in the FPL.

So get yourself a Barnes or a Zamora. Not paying anymore than for a cheap 5th mid, no rotation headache. Of course it relies on trusting Kane/Austin every week, but I don't think Kane is a flash in the pan - he's the first choice striker in a good team, who will get chances every week.

          > So get yourself a Barnes or a Zamora.

Well, that's not the most appealing option because, now we're faced with having a non-playing striker that can't fill in for us, right?

          > Of course it relies on trusting Kane/Austin every week, but I don't think Kane is a flash in the pan.

I don't feel he's a flash in the pan either but, if he happens to get injured & we've rostered Zamora, then we're really in trouble because, we've got two non-playing cheap strikers that require a min of 2FT's to rid ourselves of.

Again, I'm not saying have Kane or Austin is a bad idea they're great value but, trying to use a 352 successfully is too tricky a proposition...

Those are both playing strikers, both may lose the spot though. People have got by with Albrighton at the end of the bench thus far. There are cheap, bench every week forwards out there - Perez and Vardy at 4.8 and 4.7 for example, more threatening than Boyd, but not so much that you have a headache.

              > People have got by with Albrighton at the end of the bench thus far.

These are not encouraging words that help bolster your idea that a 352 should be the way to go fwd.

I mean, using a WC pick on a fwd who may very well lose his place in the team? Not a great idea...

Also, what if we do pick an Albrighton type & then Zamora loses his spot... again not an enticing option, yeah?

              > Perez and Vardy at 4.8 and 4.7 for example, more threatening than Boyd, but not so much that you have a headache.

If this system relies on Perez & Vardy coming off our benches some weeks then this really isn't a system we'd like to stake our FPL season's on... is it?

I really think the importance of a bench is overstated. If it means you get a better XI out, I think it means you get more points - that's what should determine whether or not its worth it.

A 4.2 midfielder in the past has attracted WC attention - put them last on the bench to rot, use the money elsewhere. Zamora could be used in the same way.

Still, it comes down to this: I would rather have Fabregas than Costa, I would rather have Perez as my 8th attacker than Boyd, and I would still be 1.3m better off.

Ludo you've done it, a decade of conventional play be damned!

The 352 is obviously the superior strategy, I mean what could go wrong?

In the end, and this is the best part, I just can't wait to slot Bobby Zamora or Ayoze Pérez into my WC team...

An element of trust is always required when getting a player. Kane and Austin have been doing a good job for a while now so I don't think their price points should prevent you from getting them. Yes this might put you in an awkward position if things go bad but sometimes its worth the risk if they are performing.

Guys if Kramaric goes to the Foxes he looks like he could be the real deal. This season's Papiss Cisse. I mean look at that goal scoring record.

Yeah and they look dire, but the lad looks an assured finisher and will get some chances at least. Plus their fixtures are getting kinder.

If they're going to splash 10m plus on him, he will be playing week in week out. He will oust Vardy out of the team quite easily as he can actually score.

I would not hold my breath waiting for that this season.
He'll get some minutes here and there but he'll need time to adapt and is of course more of a future man.

Scoring in the Europa League as well though. A hat trick against Feyenoord. Linked with a lot of big clubs, but going to Leicester for playing time.

I think there are 4.3-4.7 defenders at sides who will keep more cleansheets than Spurs.
      I think for +5m you want a top 4 / Saints def.

Going to wild card this week
    So far I have.

    Panti Heaton
    Wisdom Bertrand cissokho taylor wasilew
    Sanchez hazard fabregas Boyd silva
    Costa Kane Austin

Leaving 1.3m for a Costa to Aguero FT

    Any other suggestions?

Wondering why some people are so reluctant to have both Haz and Fab.

Last season people held onto Suarez + Sturridge for long period and had no qualm about it.

After a lot of tinkering with my WC team and some really good advice from DT .. I have came up with this team !

        Foster
        Wisdom Terry Bertrand
        Angel Hazard Sanchez Siggy
        Giroud Costa Kane

        Pants Hutton Boyd Pva

Plenty itb for Aguero when he's fit.

Right, 3-5-2 it is. Lineup for this week:

        Foster

        Azpilicueta - Trippier - Wasilewski

        Sanchez(vc) - ADM - Fabregas - Sterling - Hazard(C)

        Van Persie - Kane
        ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
        Pantilimon - Barnes - Alderweireld - Cameron

RVP > Aguero as soon as the latter is fit

Nobody can say for sure as there hasn't been a penalty with Gomis and Sigurdsson on the pitch and Bony off it.

Sigurdsson has scored a couple for Iceland but has no other history of them. Gomis scored a few for Lyon.

And here's a report where Danny Graham scored a penalty with Sigurdsson on the pitch: http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/spielbericht/index/spielbericht/1131593

Sinclair was first choice taker at that stage but had been subbed so Sigurdsson was 3rd choice at best.

Perhaps it was FA or League Cup then.

Nope, he only played 30 minutes of Cup football and wasn't involved in any goals.

The last link above is the key one I think. The penalty taking order was:

                            1. Sinclair
                            2. Graham

                            ?. Sigurddson

A fit and able Bony nailed on at Man City would be marvelous. Can't see it happening though, rotation will always be present.

We're told Swansea in advanced talks with Manchester City for Wilfried Bony. Deal yet to be agreed; valued around £30m

Seems strange with Dzeko and Aguero almost fit.

          Man City?

Why didn't Liverpool or Spurs get him in the summer?

Tailor made for the Arsenal but they have Welbeck. 😎

Does anyone have any thoughts on how the return of Vokes will impact Ings?

He will replace Barnes. He has a good partnership with Ings last season in Championship.

        Which to start?

        A) Baines (MCI)
        B) Naylor (WHA)

Personally I would play Baines for the attacking threat. Doubt either will keep a clean sheet.

Not sure you need Pants if you have Courtois

Defence - not too keen on Smalling or Jenkinson. Too many kind of mid-priced options for me would put a couple of cheapoes in there

          Midfield I like

Forwards - don't think Rooney is a good option playing in current position. Do you have the money saved to upgrade to Aguero?

I'm beginning to doubt the wait for Aguero strategy. I'm rolling in dough anyway. And it could be well into next month before he sees significant minutes.
