Our final look back at Gameweek 22 discusses the consistency of Chelsea’s in-form frontman, Arsenal’s improving performances and the possible fall-out from Kevin Mirallas’ decision to push ahead of Leighton Baines for Everton’s penalty against West Brom last night.

The Player

Two goals and an assist in Chelsea’s 5-0 hammering of Swansea helped Diego Costa to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward standings this weekend. With five goals, two assists and five bonus points in his last five league outings, the 59%-owned Blues forward has reignited his claim to remain in our three-man frontlines from here on in.

For many, Costa has simply been a placeholder for Sergio Aguero until the fit-again City man steps up his match sharpness but Saturday’s Liberty showing could force a re-think. The summer signing has now earned points in 13 of his 19 league appearances, whilst Aguero has produced in ten of his 17 outings – surprisingly, for all the claims of the latter’s explosive points potential, he’s managed double figures just three times to Costa’s four.

Crucially, Costa’s weekend display means that both players have now averaged 6.3 points per appearance this term. Granted, Aguero’s injuries have played a part but, as we’ve seen from one season to the next, they always do, whereas Costa, after our early concerns over a hamstring problem, seems to be made of sturdier stuff. The Chelsea forward has missed just three league matches this season (once due to suspension) and, when on the pitch, the least he has played over his 19 appearances is 71 minutes – a tally Aguero has bettered or matched 12 times in the first 22 Gameweeks.

Granted, there have been viable alternatives to Costa so far – both up front and at Stamford Bridge, with Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas both still ahead of him in the overall standings. As we saw at the weekend, though, when high ownership players such as Aguero, Harry Kane, Charlie Austin, Hazard and Alexis Sanchez all failed to deliver, going without the most popular option in the FPL game can have significant repercussions to our overall rankings. As wildcards are wielded, Costa may well have earned himself a reprieve as we restructure our sides to accommodate Aguero alongside him, rather than instead of the Chelsea striker.

The Team

Sunday’s 2-0 win over champions City could barely have been better timed. With the schedule now smiling kindly, Arsenal’s main assets have announced their intentions with a display that is sure to see them populate many a 15-man squad in the midst of winter wildcard season.

The Gunners could even afford a rare blank from Alexis Sanchez at the Etihad as Arsene Wenger’s 4-1-4-1 formation allowed Santi Cazorla the freedom to dominate proceedings in the centre of the park and serve up a goal and assist. The Spaniard has now notched five times this term – all in the last eight Gameweeks – and with a pair of assists also accrued during that period, his output strengthens his shout as a viable double-up option alongside the popular Chilean ahead of five very enticing fixtures (AVL, LEI, cpl, EVE, qpr) in the next six Gameweeks.

Olivier Giroud also threw his hat into the ring with a fourth goal in five league appearances. Just like Cazorla, he is priced at 8.2 and owned by only 4% of FPL managers due to a general reluctance to look past Sanchez as their Arsenal player of choice.

At the back, too, there are options worthy of our consideration as Wenger’s side start to build momentum. The installation of David Ospina in goal has overseen back-to-back clean sheets against Stoke and City and arrested a run of six league matches without a shut-out. Whilst the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker offer a greater security of starts, young Hector Bellerin – at just 4.4 – has suddenly arrived on our radars after being preferred to Calum Chambers at right-back against City. With Mathieu Debuchy sidelined for three months, Bellerin has the chance to cement his spot in our 15-man squads as Wenger’s charges look to take advantage of the schedule and serve up their customary strong finish to the season.

The Talking Point

This season has been galling enough for Leighton Baines’ owners, with team-mate Kevin Mirallas seemingly entrusted with the majority of Everton’s free-kicks. In times gone by, the left-back’s dead-ball duties could always be relied upon to elevate him up the Fantasy standings but his potential has been curtailed by the Belgian in recent months.

Last night’s penalty debacle at Goodison merely added injury to insult for Baines owners after Mirallas ignored the advice of team-mates, taking it upon himself to pull rank before failing miserably from the spot. Roberto Martinez has since insisted the Belgian’s half-time withdrawal was down to a hamstring problem and has played down the incident but there’s a real possibility that his act of defiance could prove costly for Mirallas.

With two assists and a clean sheet in his last four, Baines has hauled himself back into the reckoning in spite of Mirallas’ efforts. As the fixtures start to take a turn for the worse, though, his attacking output looks more crucial than ever for Fantasy managers and Martinez alike right now. For all the frustration caused by last night’s turn of events, Mirallas’ so-called “despicable act” may ultimately prove beneficial to Baines over the long run. The left-back – who has scored 15 of his 16 top-flight spot-kicks – will surely now be unrivalled the next time the Toffees are awarded a penalty. Furthermore, with speculation surrounding the Belgian’s future on the rise (reports suggest Spurs, Atletico Madrid and Dortmund are all interested) Baines’ owners will arguably be optimistic that, in spite of, or indeed because of Mirallas’ folly, he could even be back on free-kicks sooner than expected.

Might be channelling Captain Hindsight here, in a really unhelpful and mildly irritating way... HOWEVER - I remember at the time - as people were piling on Aguero(c) last week - thinking that it's a bit like in Friends when Gandolf is coming to town...

And Chandler says: Oh man! I am so excited—I may vomit!

And Joey says: Will you calm down, he’s just a human guy.

Chandler says: Look you don’t understand, Gandolf is amazing. Y’know you’re never know what’s gonna end up happening, you go out for a couple of beers and end up on a fishing boat to Nova Scotia!

    Joey: Really?!

Chandler: Oh yeah, it’s beautiful country up there.

Ross enters and he's all like: Hey! Okay! I got my passport, fresh socks, and a snake bite kit!

And Chandler says: It’s not gonna be exactly like last time.

Aguero is Gandolf in this scenario - and the passport, fresh socks and snake bite kit are all the goals he scored in the reverse fixture in 2014 and didn't miraculously replicate on Sunday.

Hey Jaffa - I'm really keen on Oscar and think he should have a big 2015. I am 95% set on getting him on WC - but I'm really not sure which Chelsea asset to sacrifice to do it, so wouldn't want to sway you away from either of those.

Hey Daniel Exeter (Weird that's my name, and I went to Exeter Uni!)

My rationale isn't that complex tbh. Basically I haven't owned him all season, and it's rarely hurt. I figure if I have a scoring striker in his place, spend the extra money elsewhere, have a good different CFC player and make good captain decisions when others are captaining an often 'only' 1 goal Costa - I more than make up for his steady flow of goals.

Interesting thanks. I'm liking the look of this midfield:

            Sanchez, Fabregas, Oscar, Silva, Cazorla

There's no Hazard though and I think if one has to be dropped for Oscar, Fb should go. Why no love for Costa? I am set on getting him in on my WC as he has the potential to come up with scores like that. I do agree that he's not the best valued player out there.

Yeah that's a ridiculously flair midfield!

To expand a bit on my post above, not owning Costa has been a pretty powerful differential for me first half of season. It may come back to haunt me, but I feel like I can pick strikers who can go on hotter streaks than Costa in short term bursts of fixtures. Costa has mostly got one goal and then subbed off or CFC go back into their shell. I also get to spend the saving elsewhere + get an extra CFC spot for someone like Oscar with far less ownership.

I just look back and since late November Costa got 56 points and I had instead Terry who got 78 points + 4m spent else getting a bunch more points.
Yes I didn't captain him - but that mostly turned out for the best as he's not gone super nova other than this week.

You can't argue with that. A great example of how a FPL team is not formed around one player or one GW.

After having Costa in my team all season and removing him last week I have been struggling to decide as to wether to bring him back in or go Oscar. I may just leave things as they are and after next GW go ADM to Oscar and not worry anymore about Costa!

Yeah, I was just reading your posts below. Very unlucky.

I certainly wouldn't remove Aguero to get him back!
Aguero for me dumps on Costa from a massive height.

No, I think the Sunderland keepers are the best keeper picks in FPL. If they get a CS they tend to get bonus points, and often saves. They can still get 3-4 points in a hammering due to saves.

DDG and Forster have 89 points, Mannone and Pants have 91

Green has 85 saves, Mannone and Pants have 87

There are better value options out there: Jones, Rose, Bellerin/Chambers etc

There was a hot topic somewhere showing how Soton still manage to keep clean sheets even without them. I think they will be able to still shut out opponents.

It does come at a cost though. Selling Costa on my WC lost me his points, but Jones and Fabregas - neither of whom I'd have had if I kept him - returned 14. 16 points is not a typical week for Costa; I think having him alongside cheapies, and not having him with big hitters, will pretty much even itself out.

Had since gw1 so I have him "cheap" and don't plan on dropping. This week just reminded me that he CAN be explosive from time to time. My team is pretty solid with him and Aguero both in so I'm happy!

Puncheon was my other choice, i'm just intrigued by Elia, i'd prefer a 5.5M Southampton mid. It's between them and Ward-Prowse but Elia will get more goals than him.

Not sure I agree with the comment that Elia scores more goals. Both are not prolific, perhaps Elia was lucky with his 2 goals v Newcastle. If we go by previous history he won't score many more

Ward-Prowse will get more assists while Elia will get more goals(i was comparing the two of them not Elia with Puncheon). I don't think Elia is going to score 15 goals but i think he might have a streak in the next few games.

Kinda wish I kept him on my WC instead of getting Terry in but oh well. Got burnt keeping Fab in and not getting Haz for that period when Haz was exploding. Dropped a looooooot of places

    Not on WC, but 1FT

Would you downgrade OShea to PVA? Especially for next GW as they have BUR and his attacking threat could be nice

      Heaton (Mannone)
      Clyne O'Shea Ivanovic Wisdom Hutton
      Downing Puncheon Sanchez Hazard Boyd
      Kane Rooney Costa

      1FT, £2.3ITB

      No point to save FTs...

How nailed on is Ward-Prowse over the next 4 GW? Feel free to answer how much game time he is expected to get by using a range of 0-4 (matches)

Too much competition for places in Southampton attacking mids. I'd avoid.

3 maybe, but you'd want your 5th mid to be 100% nailed.

I agree, but I am trying to see if a 4 GW punt on Ward-Prowse over Boyd is worth considering.

It might gain me some points? But I 'commit' a FT in 4 GW on that plan

Bellerin's a better option than Cameron, but it could be out of the frying pan and into the fire with rotation.
