Our final look back at Gameweek 22 discusses the consistency of Chelsea’s in-form frontman, Arsenal’s improving performances and the possible fall-out from Kevin Mirallas’ decision to push ahead of Leighton Baines for Everton’s penalty against West Brom last night.

The Player

Two goals and an assist in Chelsea’s 5-0 hammering of Swansea helped Diego Costa to the top of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) forward standings this weekend. With five goals, two assists and five bonus points in his last five league outings, the 59%-owned Blues forward has reignited his claim to remain in our three-man frontlines from here on in.

For many, Costa has simply been a placeholder for Sergio Aguero until the fit-again City man steps up his match sharpness but Saturday’s Liberty showing could force a re-think. The summer signing has now earned points in 13 of his 19 league appearances, whilst Aguero has produced in ten of his 17 outings – surprisingly, for all the claims of the latter’s explosive points potential, he’s managed double figures just three times to Costa’s four.

Crucially, Costa’s weekend display means that both players have now averaged 6.3 points per appearance this term. Granted, Aguero’s injuries have played a part but, as we’ve seen from one season to the next, they always do, whereas Costa, after our early concerns over a hamstring problem, seems to be made of sturdier stuff. The Chelsea forward has missed just three league matches this season (once due to suspension) and, when on the pitch, the least he has played over his 19 appearances is 71 minutes – a tally Aguero has bettered or matched 12 times in the first 22 Gameweeks.

Granted, there have been viable alternatives to Costa so far – both up front and at Stamford Bridge, with Eden Hazard and Cesc Fabregas both still ahead of him in the overall standings. As we saw at the weekend, though, when high ownership players such as Aguero, Harry Kane, Charlie Austin, Hazard and Alexis Sanchez all failed to deliver, going without the most popular option in the FPL game can have significant repercussions to our overall rankings. As wildcards are wielded, Costa may well have earned himself a reprieve as we restructure our sides to accommodate Aguero alongside him, rather than instead of the Chelsea striker.

The Team

Sunday’s 2-0 win over champions City could barely have been better timed. With the schedule now smiling kindly, Arsenal’s main assets have announced their intentions with a display that is sure to see them populate many a 15-man squad in the midst of winter wildcard season.

The Gunners could even afford a rare blank from Alexis Sanchez at the Etihad as Arsene Wenger’s 4-1-4-1 formation allowed Santi Cazorla the freedom to dominate proceedings in the centre of the park and serve up a goal and assist. The Spaniard has now notched five times this term – all in the last eight Gameweeks – and with a pair of assists also accrued during that period, his output strengthens his shout as a viable double-up option alongside the popular Chilean ahead of five very enticing fixtures (AVL, LEI, cpl, EVE, qpr) in the next six Gameweeks.

Olivier Giroud also threw his hat into the ring with a fourth goal in five league appearances. Just like Cazorla, he is priced at 8.2 and owned by only 4% of FPL managers due to a general reluctance to look past Sanchez as their Arsenal player of choice.

At the back, too, there are options worthy of our consideration as Wenger’s side start to build momentum. The installation of David Ospina in goal has overseen back-to-back clean sheets against Stoke and City and arrested a run of six league matches without a shut-out. Whilst the likes of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker offer a greater security of starts, young Hector Bellerin – at just 4.4 – has suddenly arrived on our radars after being preferred to Calum Chambers at right-back against City. With Mathieu Debuchy sidelined for three months, Bellerin has the chance to cement his spot in our 15-man squads as Wenger’s charges look to take advantage of the schedule and serve up their customary strong finish to the season.

The Talking Point

This season has been galling enough for Leighton Baines’ owners, with team-mate Kevin Mirallas seemingly entrusted with the majority of Everton’s free-kicks. In times gone by, the left-back’s dead-ball duties could always be relied upon to elevate him up the Fantasy standings but his potential has been curtailed by the Belgian in recent months.

Last night’s penalty debacle at Goodison merely added injury to insult for Baines owners after Mirallas ignored the advice of team-mates, taking it upon himself to pull rank before failing miserably from the spot. Roberto Martinez has since insisted the Belgian’s half-time withdrawal was down to a hamstring problem and has played down the incident but there’s a real possibility that his act of defiance could prove costly for Mirallas.

With two assists and a clean sheet in his last four, Baines has hauled himself back into the reckoning in spite of Mirallas’ efforts. As the fixtures start to take a turn for the worse, though, his attacking output looks more crucial than ever for Fantasy managers and Martinez alike right now. For all the frustration caused by last night’s turn of events, Mirallas’ so-called “despicable act” may ultimately prove beneficial to Baines over the long run. The left-back – who has scored 15 of his 16 top-flight spot-kicks – will surely now be unrivalled the next time the Toffees are awarded a penalty. Furthermore, with speculation surrounding the Belgian’s future on the rise (reports suggest Spurs, Atletico Madrid and Dortmund are all interested) Baines’ owners will arguably be optimistic that, in spite of, or indeed because of Mirallas’ folly, he could even be back on free-kicks sooner than expected.

    How is this WC team?

    Panti - 4.0
    Clyne - Terry - Bellerin - Wisdom - Baird
Sanchez - Di Maria - Hazard - Puncheon - Boyd

That is a worry, but can do Bellerin -> PVA & Baird -> Wasi then. Clyne and Terry will probably play every single game, so will rotate the others.

Best 'Costa-Aguero-Giroud' WC I can come up with at the moment.

    Panti 4.0
    Fonte Jones Wisdom PvA Baird
    Sanchez Oscar Fabregas Cazorla 4.2
    Aguero Costa Giroud

    Opinions?

That's the problem Doolittle. I can have Hazard by downgrading Giroud to Kane/Austin etc but then I will lose him as a differential. Or downgrading the defence to upgrade fab is another option, but that gives you a really thin backline.

        1. Doolittle
          • 13 Years
          11 years, 23 days ago

I personally couldn't find a Costa WC that worked, which is why I ditched him last week. That front-line will get you big points, but elsewhere will suffer. I think it pretty much evens itself out, but Hazard is one player I would not lose. I'd also want a Chelsea defender, but that's what you sacrifice with that front-line.

I'd personally choose Kane and Hazard over Giroud and Oscar.

    Opinions on this one please?

    A) Terry, Fab and Giroud

    B) Fonte, Fab and Costa

    C) Terry, Eriksen (Or Cazorla) and Costa

A gives me a bit more defensive stability on my bench, B and C leave me with scum on the bench.

B sounds very appealing, it'd give me Fab, Haz and Costa. Having no Chelsea defense is a bit of a worry though.

Baird owners. I think we can bread for a little bit. Latest WBA related transfer rumors:
    _________________________________________________________________________________
West Brom are ready to more than double Saido Berahino's money to keep him at The Hawthorns. The England forward, 21, is in line for a £50,000-a-week two-year extension.

Wigan have slapped a £6m price tag on West Brom target Callum McManaman.

Saido Berahino is almost certain to stay at West Brom after the club refused to lower their £20m asking price. Liverpool and Tottenham have made enquiries but were only willing to pay £10m to £12m.

West Brom are interested in signing Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy

Tony Pulis hopes Burnley will pay £4million for West Brom midfielder Graham Dorrans
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So nothing on our lad for now. There was one week article about Naylor but nothing new so I think that isn't reality really. Also I think Pullis is satisfied with Baird for now. He wasn't satisfied with Poc

@ Daniel - I am good, I am contemplating wc

However not this gw, will do last gw I think. Trying to work out if I should get costa or not. I could have ivan, fabs and hazard or fabs, hazard and costa (this one means puncheon is not my 4th mid and weakens midfield)

    Trying to decide

I think the real differential now will be to invest little bit more in defense. Looks like a lot of the lads have>
      Che, WBA and SoT defender
      Haz Alexis ADM
      Kun Kane Austin/ Costa

So nothing different. A lot of heavy hitter defenders outthere. Doubling on Che/SoT/WBA/Ars could be the key IMO.

      good luck

Foster has got 2 consecutive clean sheets since the arrival of Pulis however Kane has been a strong force this season. Still undecided! Pants has an easy fixture at home but Burnley do score well

After a day of doing nothing at work I've narrowed my wildcard down to this.

    A) Terry, Fab and Giroud

    B) Fonte, Fab and Costa

A gives me a bit more defensive stability on my bench, as B leaves me with pure scum. B also leaves me with no Chelsea defensive coverage, which is also a bit of a worry.

    Opinions please?

Defensive coverage? What the f is that and why would you ever need it?

Because Chelsea get clean sheets about 2 out of 3 games. Does it not seem unwise to not have coverage of that?

What about Terry, Costa and cheaper mid than Fab?

The C) option I was playing with is Terry, Eriksen/Cazorla and Costa.

I'm not sure if Terry and Eriksen/Cazorla is better than Fonte and Fabregas in the long run though.

I think 'coverage', if it is applicable anywhere, is in the context of defence - where a group of players contribute and earn a cleansheet as a unit - and you want a way in to it.

Attacking coverage doesn't make any sense at all as it's individuals who score attacking points rather than teams/groups of defenders - but 'defensive coverage' is a fair point imo.

Naughton going to Swansea could be interesting. He's surely moving there to be first choice. At 4,3 he would be a good choice IMO, even though Swansea haven't been impressive lately.

Only nailed on if a Swansea fullback leaves IMO.

Swans are toss though. Monk has muted their attacking threat and yet they're still porous.

Sorry to promote my writing again, but my novel is now available for Kindle on Amazon. I wrote it a couple of years ago after my English degree, and put a lot of time and effort into it, so if any of you could spare £1.99 (it is available on Amazon in other countries for the equivalent price) it would be so greatly appreciated. It is the least I was allowed to charge; really I just want as many people as possible to read it because it is something that means a great deal to me.

If you could spare the couple of quid and provide any feedback, either on here or ideally on Amazon, I will love you all and answer any of your FPL questions with my infinite wisdom 😉

Also, the American spelling is intentional as it's a Robert Frost line, and the content is better than the cover 😉

Is it? Sorry if so, I just poured a lot of time and effort into writing a novel and this is one of the few outlets I have for getting anyone to read it.

I think so. I recall that marketing products (that your novel is) is against the forum rules. There's a good case for why this would be the rule as well (and is on many forums), which has nothing to do with your novel in particular.

Fair enough, apologies if so, I just want people to read it - I'd give it away for free if Amazon would let me!

Well, anyway, so far your post has not been touched, so enjoy, either it is not against the rules, or the mods are sleeping and it is not against the rules _in practice_.

Hopefully they can see that I'm not some big success story forcing his book down people's throats, I'm just trying to inform people - many of whom have fed back positively on my blog - that I have a book that can be read. I'm on here a lot, it would be a shame if I'm not allowed to tell anyone that I have a book online. As I say, I put a hell of a lot of effort into it.

Anyway, instead of worrying about mods, why don't you buy a copy? 😉

                  Shameless! 😆

Sorry, I won't have time to read it. And I got it that you want me to read it rather than just buy it.

You're even more cynical than me! Yes, I want people to read it, which is why I share my blogs on here - I make no money from those. I'd make about a quid if you bought this book - it's hardly life changing. I have no ambitions to be rich; I have ambitions to be a writer.

My local butchers does ridiculous Toulouse sausages.
For the mash I use Elfe potatoes and put them through a potato creamer.
I use home made beef stock and make a mini french onion soup for the gravy.
          Lovely.

In this game any player blanks one-two weeks in a row, starts getting sold. Apart from Sterling and Baines, who have very dedicated fans who keeps them for month after month without scoring 😉
