Gus Poyet moved to address Sunderland’s problems up front by signing Jermain Defoe from Toronto FC on a three-and-a-half year deal late last week. Discussing the move with the club’s website, the Uruguayan heaped praise on the 32-year-old and revealed his arrival will result in a change of tactics for the Black Cats:

β€œIt’s not very often we’re in a position where we can bring in a player of the quality of Jermain Defoe. But we’ve got him here, and we have to use him in the right way now. We were missing something in front of goal, but now we’ve got Jermain. Now I need to keep him fit and playing. There are plenty of things we can do differently. We are going to develop into something different. We will try to adapt. In the past, we found it easier to be organised with one striker up front and the other one working a bit harder out wide. Now, it’s a big possibility we will start playing with two up front.”

The History

Starting his youth career with Charlton at the age of 14, Defoe was snapped up by West Ham a couple of years later in 1999. The striker spent a total of five years up Upton Park and, after being farmed out on loan at Bournemouth (18 goals in 29 appearances in 2000-01), went on to produce 29 goals and a pair of assists in 94 appearances for the Hammers before Tottenham came calling in January 2004.

Defoe’s first stint at White Hart Lane saw him rack up 59 goals and six assists over 171 outings in all competitions before he was snapped up by Portsmouth in the 2008/09 transfer window. His time at Fratton Park lasted just a year before he returned to White Hart Lane, with Defoe’s 18 goals and five assists persuading his former employers to bring him back to north London.

Second time around, the frontman delivered 79 goals and 26 assists in 155 appearances across all competitions but after falling down the pecking order, he signed for FC Toronto this time last year. Defoe’s ill-fated spell in Canada still brought goals aplenty – he netted 11 times in 16 appearances before Poyet made his move last Friday. On the international front, Defoe has turned out 55 times for the England senior side and has found the net on 15 occasions.

The Prospects

With just 19 goals to their name so far, Sunderland clearly need extra firepower to boost their survival bid. Crucially for Poyet, the new boy needs no time to adapt to the Premier League and the Uruguayan handed Defoe an immediate start against his former club Spurs on Saturday, switching to a 3-5-2 formation to partner him with Steven Fletcher up front. Although he failed to score, Defoe’s assist for Seb Larsson’s consolation hints at what may follow as he becomes more accustomed to his team-mates in the ensuing weeks.

Discussing his move at a press conference earlier today, the frontman reckons there’s reason for optimism in spite of the weekend defeat:

β€œI’m really looking forward to the challenge and I believe we will create a lot of chances for me and others to score goals. First and foremost I want to be back here playing games and scoring goals. I’ve missed the Premier League. Overall there were a lot of positives to take from the Tottenham game. I thought we deserved a point. Hopefully we can get some points in the next few games.”

Providing he steers clear of injury, Defoe looks nailed on for the Wearsiders and arrives at a time where the fixtures take a significant turn for the better. Poyet’s side are set for an exceptional run of remaining home fixtures (BUR, QPR, WBA, AVL, NEW, CPL, SOU, LEI) that sees them host seven of the bottom ten teams, and with trips to the likes of Swansea and Hull in the next six, the Wearsiders have the platform to cement their safety.

Available for just 6.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Defoe is another name to add to the growing list of budget options up front this season. He also seems to have spot-kick duties already in hand, judging by his manager’s weekend comments, and with Poyet intent on going on the offensive against his relegation rivals, we may well look beyond Sunderland’s defence as a source of points. The recent change of formation could also strengthen the claims of Patrick van Aanholt and Billy Jones – both were fielded as wing-backs at White Hart Lane and could benefit from more advanced positions if Poyet keeps faith in his new tactical approach.

he's worth it. other ars not sure to start (bar giroud maybe) and erikson not comparable imo - and I guess you also have kane so you wanna double up on spurs?

It's possible to go without him, guess it also depends on the rest of your team and on how much you got him for/if you have him already...

    On Wildcard
Got Berty @ 5.7 but i'm tempted to swap for Fonte.. 5 shots in the box vs berty's 2 so and a good goalscoring history the past 2 seasons(+ baps magnet)..
or just get neither and wait for Alderweireld to come back(qpr WHM LIV wont be so easy and not wanyama)

I kinda like the Alderweireld option at present

Will make a decision after the Leicester game. But in general, he's an excllent excellent player. Always on the run looking for goals and assists. Can't say that about too many players other than Sanchez and Hazard.

I don't entirely like it, which is a good thing as it's not my team. πŸ˜‰

          1. Panti 4.0 makes no sense to me because the 4.0 is another team. Foster Myhill better.
          2. Baird may not play regularly and Leicester defence is shocking.
          3. I like the midfield but would prefer a worthwhile 5th mid like Colback or Arfield at 4.8. I also might consider Eriksen over Cazorla but that could be a later transfer.
          4. The front line you probably can't go far wrong with. But Giroud Sanchez and Cazorla looks like Arsenal overkill to me.

So, I'd do Foster Myhill; Pelle (about to fall to 7.8) instead of Giroud; Arfield/Colback for the 4.4. So far that's the same price.

Then in defence Alderweireld for Fonte (maybe use Gardos as placeholder) allowing Wollscheid for Baird. Wasilewski remains as 5th defender - he wouldn't get in the team much but could be useful on the odd occasion. In total that's the same price as the squad you have. I like my version better but you may well prefer yours!

          Foster, Myhill;
          Alderweireld, Wollscheid, Wisdom, PvA, Wasilewski;
          Sanchez, Oscar, Cazorla/Eriksen, Hazard, Colback/Arfield;
          Pelle, Costa, Aguero.

Apologies for repost, probably a different crowd to yesterday:

Sorry to promote my writing again, but my novel is now available for Kindle on Amazon. I wrote it a couple of years ago after my English degree, and put a lot of time and effort into it, so if any of you could spare £1.99 (it is available on Amazon in other countries for the equivalent price) it would be so greatly appreciated. It is the least I was allowed to charge; really I just want as many people as possible to read it because it is something that means a great deal to me. If you could spare the couple of quid and provide any feedback, either on here or ideally on Amazon, I will love you all and answer any of your FPL questions with my infinite wisdom

    Arsenal Defence

Have been thinking about this as I've seen a lot of Koscielny and Bellerin's in WC teams. Here's what I think in terms of how nailed on they all are:

    RB

Debuchy - Out for three months.

Bellerin - Played the last two, firstly because Chambers was ill and then picked on merit against Man City.

Chambers - Has played a lot of football, much of it at RB but him and Mertesacker leave Arsenal venerable to quick players on that side of the park (how many of those Chambers yellows were him pulling back a quicker player?). At the moment Chambers is also the most recognised CB deputy.

Conclusion: I think Bellerin is more nailed for this spot because of the balance he brings in tandem with Mertesacker. I don't think it's coincidence that Per's looked much better in the last two.

    CB

Mertesacker - completely nailed to the point of probably having played too much football, especially when out of form. But because of Koscielny issues I don't see him missing a match in the PL unless he gets suspended or injured (in which case Chambers is his deputy, not Monreal).

Koscielny - Carrying tendonitis in his achilles. You can often see him struggling in matches at the moment, and I think he needs a proper rest from football at some point. I don't think he can play 3 games in 7 days, so when CL starts up I would be worried he'll be a rotation risk before or after.

Monreal - Has filled in at CB in Koscielny's position earlier in the season. He did fine I think and offers a similarly mobile, quick option to Kos back there.

Mystery CB - Arsenal heavily linked with CBs this window, lately Gabriel Paulista who is in the Koscielny mould, mobile/quick/two-footed but not the best in the air. This is another strike against Koscielny IMO.

    RB

Gibbs - Previously nailed on (except hardly ever fit for more than two games) and I had Gibbs in from the start this season convinced he'd really kick on. He's impressive in the flesh, gets up and down the wing and into dangerous areas. I've been disappointed so far this season though so probably best left alone.

Monreal - Seems to have won the LB battle in the short term with some really solid performances. The defence seems tighter with him on that left side, but he's also getting better in an attacking sense too. Despite playing more games this season he's actually dropped from his opening price of 5m too.

    Conclusion:

In terms of value for money I think Bellerin and Monreal are good picks. I think Monreal is probably at more threat of being rotated or losing his spot to Gibbs at the moment, mostly due to Chambers as backup CB and Arsenal not able to afford an injury to him (unless Mystery CB comes in). Ballerin should offer attacking potential too by the way he plays and his pace.

Mertesacker at 6m offers consistency of minutes but feels a bit overpriced.

In terms of Goalkeepers I think Ospina is nailed for the near-future but anything can happen there. One big mistake or poor performance and the door starts to open for Sczesney again.

Yeah I'd really like Ospina, fixtures are great too. But at the moment I'm Cazorla, Bellerin + Sanchez.

Though I'm making sure to have a decent bench incase Bellerin does start to miss out.

Hector Bellerin is the one for me..
But in that case I would have to get rid of Alan Hutton to fit him in my team..

But I think that would be worth it.

You can find reasons for and against most of them but..
      - As much as you want it to be true, Bellerin isn't nailed.
      - Kosc and Mert will start when fit, mystery CB to remain a back-up unless it's a really big name. You're overplaying Kosc's rotation
      - LB spot will continue to change hands as it does for City

Fully agree. Chambers has had his rest now and will be first choice rb now imo. Bellerin will get the odd game to keep chambers fresh but chambers is the man I reckon (barring another dip in form).

Which 2 would you rather have over the next 6 weeks, Cazorla, Oscar and Sterling. I don't have any Liverpool coverage but it's not come back to bite me yet so I'm think Caz and Oscar (not sure either will be a season keeper but both in a good form and nice fixtures)

      10 years, 11 months ago

possibly, would you end up playing the WC for GW24? If so maybe use that money for a more punty pick in the midfield and then you can sort it out on the wildcard

        • 12 Years
        10 years, 11 months ago

I'm thinking about this too, but I'd keep Downing against Liverpool. This could be his last game for my club.
What punt do you fancy at midfield? Cazorla? However the home stats are favouring Alexis

        1. Jacques The Lad

I definitely wouldn't give up Alexis (i'd assume you have some value tied up there as well) but Cazorla would look good alongside him at least for this week. Thats what I'm doing at least. I don't know if you could afford to upgrade punch to him tho

I'm keeping Puncheon, he did well on Saturday for my team and surely I won't sell him.

Shame Liverpool's fixtures aren't a little more attractive, I could squeeze Sterling into my midfield instead of Chadli with a mild downgrade elsewhere (Koscielny to Bellerin for example). Feel like there should be better options though.

I have been using cheap forwards with Costa for a while now, fancied a change and thought my front three offers my fixtures and pelle/giroud offer differentials within my league. Giroud captain this week !

I suppose I've had to let loose somewhere so went for Walters as the budget option, however he has great incoming fixtures....
