Raheem Sterling grabs a vital leveller as Liverpool turn in a dominant home display against Chelsea in the Capital One Cup semi-final. Eden Hazard’s converted spot-kick earns the league leaders a draw ahead of next week’s second-leg at the Bridge. Swansea’s Wayne Routledge is ruled out for four weeks, Wilfried Bony bags an assist as the Ivory Coast earn a draw in their African Cup of Nations opener, whilst Sadio Mane proves his fitness for Senegal.

STERLING STRIKES IN SEMI-FINAL STALEMATE

Brendan Rodgers made just one change to his Liverpool starting XI for their Capital One Cup semi-final first-leg tie with Chelsea last night, introducing Steven Gerrard for Fabio Borini. Raheem Sterling moved up front, flanked by Lazar Markovic and Philippe Coutinho, and grabbed the Reds’ equaliser with a stunning solo effort in the 1-1 draw.

Post-match, Rodgers highlighted Sterling’s recent break as a major factor in the youngster’s energetic performance:

“This is about the boy’s life and his career. People will talk about it but I’m only worried about the kid. You could see tonight he was probably fresher, not so much physically but mentally. He’s had so much put on him so early in his career. There is no doubt he is an exceptional young talent.”

The Scout Says: After a difficult first half of the season, Rodgers’ charges are finally beginning to find their stride. The Merseysiders more than held their own against the current Premier League leaders, firing in an impressive 19 attempts and dominating the possession with 62% of the ball. Even with a tough schedule on the horizon (WHM, eve, TOT, sou, MCI), last night’s commanding display suggests they could still prevail over the coming weeks, with their 3-4-2-1 set-up currently going from strength to strength. Sterling’s 29% ownership will be hopeful that the youngster can hold on to the lone forward role for their next league fixture after yesterday’s finely taken goal, though with Borini and Rickie Lambert both finding the net at the weekend, and Daniel Sturridge edging ever closer to a comeback, Rodgers may finally be able to place his faith in his recognised strikers from here on in.

HAZARD HANDS BLUES ADVANTAGE

Last night’s cup clash saw Jose Mourinho make two alterations to the side that thrashed Swansea last Saturday, as Thibaut Courtois and Jon Obi Mikel were brought in for Petr Cech and Oscar, with Cesc Fabregas moved in behind Diego Costa. Eden Hazard earned and slotted home a penalty to put the Blues in the lead before Sterling’s equaliser levelled the tie and ensured there is still everything to play for in the second leg, despite the Londoner’s away goal advantage.

The Scout Says: Truth be told, Mourinho’s side rather papered over the cracks of a slack showing at Anfield. Hazard’s penalty was their only shot on target all night, with just two efforts amassed across the 90 minutes in a performance miles apart from their dominant display against the Swans. Nevertheless, Hazard’s owners will still have reason for cheer, with the Belgian’s stand-out performance offering a certain amount of encouragement after his disappointing blank in the rout last weekend. Like Liverpool, the Blues have two more cup matches before league action recommences, and a host of changes looks likely for their weekend visit of Bradford given that the second leg with Liverpool arrives just three days later, which could provide the likes of Loic Remy and Andre Schurrle with a chance to impress.

ROUTLEDGE RULED OUT FOR A MONTH

Swansea have confirmed that Wayne Routledge is set to be out for four weeks with the calf strain suffered during the weekend home loss to Chelsea. Meanwhile, Swans skipper Ashley Williams has been ruled out of his side’s FA Cup encounter with Blackburn this weekend due to a shoulder complaint, but should return to training next week.

The Scout Says: Having played all but two league matches for the Swans this season, Routledge’s loss will naturally come as a huge blow. However, yesterday’s announcement was accompanied by the news that Jefferson Montero has returned to full training after recovering from a hamstring injury suffered on Boxing Day. The Ecuadorian’s tally of four assists in his previous nine appearances is more than Routledge and Nathan Dyer have managed combined this season, and Montero now looks set to reclaim a starting role ahead of some kind clashes against Sunderland, West Brom and Burnley in his next five. Meanwhile, Williams’ anticipated quick recovery in time for Gameweek 23 will come as a relief to the Welsh side, who have now conceded 11 times in their last four league fixtures.

ELEPHANTS STUMBLE IN CUP OPENER

Wilfried Bony, Yaya Toure and Cheik Tiote were all handed starts as Ivory Coast earned a 1-1 draw with Guinea in their first African Cup of Nations fixture, with the former supplying the assist for his side’s equaliser after they were reduced to 10 men early in the second-half.

The Scout Says: Regardless of yesterday’s slight setback, the Elephants’ wealth of talent means they remain the favourites for the tournament. Should they indeed reach the final, Bony, Toure and Tiote will be out of contention for their respective sides until Gameweek 26, meaning they will miss the next three rounds of league fixtures. That could prove costly for Man City in particular, who certainly could have used the dominance of Toure and goal threat of new signing Bony in their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal last time out. With an all-important trip to Chelsea next on the agenda, there’s no doubt that the pair will be sorely missed once again; a repeat of the dismal attacking performance from Sunday’s match could spell disaster for the champions, who would slip eight points behind the Blues, should they lose. Surprisingly, Manuel Pellegrini opted for a lone striker system against the Gunners, despite the availability of Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, but will surely turn to a two-man frontline as he attempts to reduce the deficit at the summit.

MANE READY TO MAKE ACoN BOW

Reports have revealed that Southampton’s Saido Mane is back in full training and should be fit for Senegal’s second ACoN match against South Africa on Friday.

The Scout Says: Mane’s return means that he has justified Senegal’s decision to select him in their 23-man squad, and with his side having already won their first match of the tournament, the winger could be on course to reach the knockout stages of the competition with another victory on Friday. With Mane fit again, then, Senegal’s progress in Africa looks set to have a direct impact on the pitch time of Southampton’s new boy Eljero Elia back on English soil; should they reach the final, Elia is certain to start at least the next three for the Saints, and if the 5.5-priced Dutchman can maintain the form that saw him grab a brace on Saturday, Mane will surely have a tough task to reclaim a starting berth upon his return to England.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Latest wildcard defences

The template wildcard defences seem to be a Chelsea and Southampton defender with either three cheap rotating options or an Arsenal defender and just two cheap defenders.

Of the cheap ones West Brom defenders are proving popular.

What does your prospective wildcard, or recently wildcarded back five look like? Feel free to include goalkeepers?

Is anyone going for an uber cheap backline and investing in midfield instead? Is anyone opting for defenders that few RMTs have so far?

Wildcarded last week and ended on this:

      Foster/Myhill
      Terry/Bertrand/Jones/Wisdom/PVA

      I'm happy with that defence.

Foster, Terry and fonte for the WBA, Che, sou cover. Baines because he has the most potential. Pva for Back up, maybe to cover others tough fixtures like terry and baines at Chelsea away. Baird as my last one.

A plethora of bargain midfield & attacking options have me considering doubling up on Southampton or Chelsea DEFs. Or even double BOTH including GK.

Haven't decided but for me Defense plays a really important role..I spend most of the time in making my team on deciding the defense...looking at an Ospina - Hamer combo for GK to accommodate Fonte / Ivan combo in defense

Atm I'd say mine is pretty template...

      Foster // Myhill
      Terry // Bertrand // Bellerin // PVA // Wisdom

Bellerin is a risk but worth taking for me given the gunners fixtures, his price and having two nailed on other cheap defenders.

I'm considering a Foster/Panti rotation but not sure it's worth the money given I'd prefer to play a WBA player every week (with the occasional double up) and will probably leave a lot of points on the bench. I trust a Pulis team to potentially deliver a CS against anyone.

Wildcarding next week and all still up in the air, as I have no doubt another twenty transfers will be made to turn our heads and probably a few injuries or red cards could also stick their unwanted noses into the mix.

I have yet to be convinced to drop my two cheap strikers in favour of two very expensive ones and a cheapie.
I have not done the stats as it's not something I do, but my gut feeling atm is that 5-6 million extra spent on 2-3 quality defenders will more than balance any difference in nett striker points.

Wildcarding this week and I'm at a pretty template defence atm (which I'm satisfied with):

Terry, Bertrand, Wisdom, PVA and Taylor.

Terry and Bertrand for most weeks, with the three others arguing for the final spots.

I would love to upgrade Terry to Ivanovic, but money constraints makes me settle with Terry, hope that he'll prove to be enough. Taylor is to mainly cover my weak GWs, such as 24 and 27, although I would rather have Trippier there really, but not that huge a difference.

      Ospina Hamer
      Terry Fonte Wisdom Hutton Baird

I would like to get PVA to cover the Sunderland fixtures.
Got Fonte in for goal threat and high baseline BPS
Will likely only ever play 3 at the back.
Realise Hamer is non-playing but it's a risk I'm prepared to take - started the season with Forster and non-playing which worked out well!)

      I'm tempted to go with:

      Panti - Mannone

      Baird - Wisdom - Wollschied - Wasi - Hutton

      so that I can afford:

      Haz, Fab, Eriksen, Sanchez, Downing

      Aguero, Costa, Kane

      Madness or worth it?

Madness, you defence is so disgusting other than Wisdom you might as well not have one! The power frontline and middle will have to take a hit somewhere if you want a more balanced team? Consider dropping one of Haz/Fab and getting a chelsea defender that you'll play every week and see which other viable cheap defenders rotate.

More or less worth it but downgrade downing and upgrade defence a little..i like cheapo defences, but that needs improving a bit..
i wouldn't have baird and wisdom for one..huttons ok, try a cheap stoke one as games not too bad..
also swop mannone for krul so they rotate if you can.

Thanks appreciate it. Bailj018 thinks it's awful which is fair enough, it isn't great.

What's wrong with Baird and Wisdom though? A lot of ppl are doubling up on WBA and Baird even got bonus last match.

Hutton is the one I least like as Villa are awful.

Wollschied is a bit of a punt but possibly not worth it. The problem is that Cameron might be rotated which would be annoying.

I would never play Wasi anyway.

I'll take one of your pieces of advice and downgrade either Fab or Downing for a Chelsea or Soton defender instead. That's probably best. Cheers!

I see what you mean ref Baird/Wisdom I suppose. I guess I have never doubled up and just don't really like doing that as one goal and its all over.. May be worth a punt though as with Pulis there, they may just do the trick for you..

I agree ref Hutton and Villas fixtures are not too good either.. swap him for Bellerin??

Pantimilion is a giant and Foster and Wisdom for the Pulis effect (risky going for two I know!) Also means I can play a Sunderland fixture in addition to a WBA fixture if I'd rather play Terry and co over a double WBA.

That's too much money spent on defence imo unless you intend to play a 4 man defence. With a 3-man defence the 5th defender is never likely to play so why not have a 3.9 to 4.2 player?

Of course if you can afford it anyway and it doesn't impact your midfield choices then you should go right ahead.

I am cautious on spending too much on my backline!

Team as it stands though is the above back 7.

Mid: Boyd, Puncheon, Hazard, Sanchez, Downing

Costa, Aguero and Kane (but will do Kane > Bojan upon Kane's price rise)

2.5/2.6m (if Kane rises before selling) ITB to be flexible.

Bellerin and a Stoke defender have made me lean heavily to the Wba/Sun/Stoke rotation (QPR/BUR, bur, QPR, WBA, HUL, hul, AVL, CPL, QPR, LEI, cpl, SUN, swa, new, LEI, LIV)
I'm feeling more confident with those 3 defenses than with any one of Villa, Leicester, or Burnley(yuck).

      Pantihamer
Terry / Fonte/ Ballerina (Wisdom, Wollscheid)

I also have my original WC, so am looking at the best short term rotations, and have come to the conclusion that Stoke and West Brom will suffice for now. My worst case scenario here is that Ballerina gets injured/falls out of favor and would downgrade to PVA to have the 3-way rotation I listed.

Stoke/West Brom short term - (QPR, bur, SWA, avl, HUL, avl, wba/STO, CRY, QPR, LEI, cpl, SUN)

        For next GW:-

A- Terry, Betrand, Wisdom (Taylor) (Hutton) or
B - Taylor, Bertrand, Wisdom (Terry) (Hutton)??

It looks obvious when written down in black and white. A all the way lol

WC used. A bit early but i was worried about price rises for Kun.

        Rest of team Pants/Krul
Chadli, Downing, Sanchez (C) HAz (Boyd)
        Costa Kane Kun

    Is Kane going to regress?

His stats aren't very impressive and he has an extremely high conversion record, will he be an anomaly like Yaya last year or is he just in a hot streak?

Yes he offers great value but so did Naismith/Ulloa/Berahinho/Austin etc during their brief hot spots.

Looking at the fixtures, Spurs rumoured interest in signing a new striker as well as a possible blank in GW27, is it not wise to jump off this train now to say a Defoe? He's so cheap we can always jump on again in the future.

    Thoughts?

This, getting ahead is all about spotting the 'next' Kane unless you're leading your mini-league and just want to hold the line (bit boring though and may backfire!) Personally opted for Bojan due to fixtures but Defoe is also a great shout! Gayle is another budget striker worth considering.

Think with players like Kane you got to be ready to jump off when he goes cold. Easy switch to the Naismith/Ulloa/Berahinho/Austin players you mentioned if one catches fire.
      Also with
      Costa Aguero xxxx

You can have abit of a punt with the 3rd striker spot

I'm still reeling from making a transfer of Costa > Grioud before the boxing day fixtures. Made Giroud captain and got minus four points. Since then Costa has been on a hot streak and my subsequent transfer of Giroud to Rooney has done me no favours. Worst decision of the season for me. Would really begrudge getting him back after that!

Ownership where it counts is scary. If he continues and the player you get in fails, it's a loss in ground. Fixtures aren't great, neither was game with Chelsea yet he did well.

My only issue with Defoe is if Sunderland will create enough chances for him to score. He's a proven finisher with great fixtures (home all the way till the end of the season).

Poyet has gone on record saying they're going to be more offensive now so I may hop on, they have some great fixtures coming up -

        BUR/swa/QPR/WBA/mun/hul/AVL/whm/NEW/CPL

        Compared to Kane's -

        wba/ARS/liv/WHM/qpr/SWA

(plus Europa league and a possible blank in GW27)

He's only really had one really prolific season. He's a 1 in 2 man. He scored 11 goals in 16 MLS games so he can still finish. Plus his games not about pace it's more about instinct and being ruthless when he has a chance, something that can improve with age and experience.

My point was more about moving Kane on tbh, Defoe is just an option

Yes he will almost certainly regress in terms of FPL points. It was the Chelsea game that finally convinced me of his ability but his two goals in that game were both perfect strikes from outside the box (or the edge of the box) and he won't be repeating that too often.

However he is exceptional value at 5.8 or whatever he is now. He was priced at the start of season as an unlikely to play 3rd choice behind Adebayor and Soldado in a team that plays 1 striker. He is now 1st choice. The right price for a 1st choice striker at Spurs is between 7.5 and 8.5, I'd expect Kane to be 8.0+ next season. So he's great value, just don't captain him (unless you want to take a punt) because he's not at that level yet.

All good points, especially on the type of chances he has.

If Spurs bring a striker in then obviously that changes everything. But Levy usually doesn't do much in January so unless they sell Soldado I can't see it happening myself.

            Good point on Levy.

Thing is with Europa league coming up Spurs could change their focus as I believe there is a Champions League spot available if they win/get to the final if their opponent is already in CL place

            1. Ruth_NZ
              • 11 Years
              11 years, 22 days ago

I don't think getting to the final qualifies them whoever the opponent. But certainly the EL winners get CL next season so you are making a good point.

All of a sudden Liverpool, Everton and Spurs will be very interested in the EL, especially once they get to the 1/4 finals. None of them are likely to make the CL otherwise.

I think this could especially affect Liverpool. If they don't make the LC final all the sentimental nonsense about Gerrard will switch to the EL. If they could make the final that would be his last game for the club.

I know that, that's why I said if their opponent in the final has already qualified.

The point is more about as you say teams shifting their focus away from the premier league

Even if the other team in the final has qualified, runner-up doesn't get a CL spot. They'd have to win it.

I can see a serious lack of goals on Kane's part in the immediate future. He's a young, inexperienced lad so I'm expecting burn-out and him sucumbing to the pressures of the EPL and the fans. So since he'll likely be my one and only cheapie up front for now, my WC team will have at least 1.0m itb in case his form dips massively.

That said his immediate fixtures don't grab my attentions as much as say Bojans even.
Spurs (wba, ARS, liv, WHU, qpr, SWA, mun, LEI)
Stoke (QPR, new, MCI, avl, HUL, EVE, wba, CPL)

I can see Kane comfortably scoring in 4/8 of those fixtures, compared to Bojan and co, I feel confident he'll outscore Harry by at least 2 or 3 goals in the next eight. Wouldn't feel at ease playing Bojan vs MCI, or wba for right now, which is why I'll be rotating him to get the best out of the lad.

Nacho monreal is having a brilliant brilliant season defensively. Been criticized, abused, trolled but he has been really solid in defense. The brief spell at CB has helped him be calm, composed and anticipate his forward runs n tackles pretty well...
And he is less injury prone than gibbs, no doubt gibbs will come real good in coming years but he needs to stay fit!

I have an idea that I would like you to give some input on.

Southampton's upcoming fixtures are: SWANSEA, qpr, WEST HAM, LIVERPOOL, wba, PALACE
City's upcoming fixtures are: chelsea, HULL, stoke, NEWCASTLE, liverpool, LEICESTER, burnley

I think Southampton's fixtures are decent but not that great. City's fixtures are absolutely brilliant after Chelsea away next gw. Southampton are lacking some of their best defensive player at the moment and last game they conceeded vs Newcastle. I fully expect City to tighten up to the end of the season.

So. What about Clichy instead of Fonte/Clyne/Bertrand? He may be benched from time to time but with a WBA defender as a backup it shouldnt be that much of a problem since Clichy is a 90/0 player. He has been one of City's best players recently and should provide some assists as he is more attacking now than he was before.

    Thoughts guys?.

Not a bad idea - although I had the same thought with City's easy schedule in December and doubled up on Hart & Clichy... Resulting in f**k all, since they conceded against WBA, BUR, SUN, EVE and ARS.

Southampton just seem better organized - and the goal they conceded against NEW was a freak occurance.

Madness! I regret selling both Clyne/Bertrand when their fixtures turned sour, was hoping to pick them BOTH back up once their price had fallen to the original and make a tidy profit, now I only have Bertrand back!

Think I've got a pretty decent team together now after WC:

    Ospina, Hamer
    Ivanovic, PvA, Bellerin, Wisdom, Gardos
    Hazard, Sanchez, Sterling, Elia, Colback
    Aguero, Costa, Kane

Pretty sure Ospina has GK at ARS nailed down now. And can transfer some of my budget-DEF around in 2-4 weeks when fx Bellerin/Gardos slip out of starting 11... Thoughts? Thanks!

Hamer to Krul. Hamer will/can lose his spot when Kasper returns... Other than that, looks good 🙂

Yea, Hamer will prob lose his place when Kasper returns, thought about that too.. Only looking at a replacement for Ospina in GW24, when they face Spurs, probably Foster vs BUR for that one. Or Krul as you say - just not too sure about their DEF as long as they don't have a manager in place. Only issue is I then have to find 0.5 somewhere in the team though.

Thought Bellerin looked solid against City and seems ahead of Chambers on right back - but of course there's the rotation risk for the youngster.

        Money issue
Hamer cheapest playing GK (back up to Pants)
        Wasi cheapest 3.9 playing defender
        Albrighton cheapest filler

Will probably move Albrighton and Cahill

You took out Costa for Aguero for a hit. Costa was playing a team he scored a hat-trick against last time. Aguero had played 24 minutes after an injury he couldn't possibly be 100% recovered from yet.

I can only assume you did that because almost everyone on here was saying "you must have Aguero"?

In which case why are you asking for their advice again? Pick who you think is best.

Would love to here your thoughts on these 3 for the long term. I currently have ADM but with lvg messing him about am not as confident of him doing well! My rival has Eirkson and I've siggy so that's killing me at the moment.

    Sterling
    Adm

Eriksen is annoying (when I have him.)

ADM - I'd wait until an upturn in form.

Erikson will make you crazy, and perhaps not worth his price
Sterling is a good choice, might be hitting form and might even do well when Stur return
ADM, great potential, but wait one more GW and see LVG tactics, if he plays ADM where he belongs

    What you think guys?wc team:
    Foster-Myhil
    Terry-Clyne-Wisdom-Pva-Keane
    Hazard-Moses-Sanchez-Cazorla-Boyd
    Giroud-Costa-Aguero

Not sure about a few things:
-it is worth 3 Chelsea players with City next and a probably blank soon?
-Too heavy on Arsenal?Giroud.Caz and Sanchez?
