Raheem Sterling grabs a vital leveller as Liverpool turn in a dominant home display against Chelsea in the Capital One Cup semi-final. Eden Hazard’s converted spot-kick earns the league leaders a draw ahead of next week’s second-leg at the Bridge. Swansea’s Wayne Routledge is ruled out for four weeks, Wilfried Bony bags an assist as the Ivory Coast earn a draw in their African Cup of Nations opener, whilst Sadio Mane proves his fitness for Senegal.

STERLING STRIKES IN SEMI-FINAL STALEMATE

Brendan Rodgers made just one change to his Liverpool starting XI for their Capital One Cup semi-final first-leg tie with Chelsea last night, introducing Steven Gerrard for Fabio Borini. Raheem Sterling moved up front, flanked by Lazar Markovic and Philippe Coutinho, and grabbed the Reds’ equaliser with a stunning solo effort in the 1-1 draw.

Post-match, Rodgers highlighted Sterling’s recent break as a major factor in the youngster’s energetic performance:

“This is about the boy’s life and his career. People will talk about it but I’m only worried about the kid. You could see tonight he was probably fresher, not so much physically but mentally. He’s had so much put on him so early in his career. There is no doubt he is an exceptional young talent.â€

The Scout Says: After a difficult first half of the season, Rodgers’ charges are finally beginning to find their stride. The Merseysiders more than held their own against the current Premier League leaders, firing in an impressive 19 attempts and dominating the possession with 62% of the ball. Even with a tough schedule on the horizon (WHM, eve, TOT, sou, MCI), last night’s commanding display suggests they could still prevail over the coming weeks, with their 3-4-2-1 set-up currently going from strength to strength. Sterling’s 29% ownership will be hopeful that the youngster can hold on to the lone forward role for their next league fixture after yesterday’s finely taken goal, though with Borini and Rickie Lambert both finding the net at the weekend, and Daniel Sturridge edging ever closer to a comeback, Rodgers may finally be able to place his faith in his recognised strikers from here on in.

HAZARD HANDS BLUES ADVANTAGE

Last night’s cup clash saw Jose Mourinho make two alterations to the side that thrashed Swansea last Saturday, as Thibaut Courtois and Jon Obi Mikel were brought in for Petr Cech and Oscar, with Cesc Fabregas moved in behind Diego Costa. Eden Hazard earned and slotted home a penalty to put the Blues in the lead before Sterling’s equaliser levelled the tie and ensured there is still everything to play for in the second leg, despite the Londoner’s away goal advantage.

The Scout Says: Truth be told, Mourinho’s side rather papered over the cracks of a slack showing at Anfield. Hazard’s penalty was their only shot on target all night, with just two efforts amassed across the 90 minutes in a performance miles apart from their dominant display against the Swans. Nevertheless, Hazard’s owners will still have reason for cheer, with the Belgian’s stand-out performance offering a certain amount of encouragement after his disappointing blank in the rout last weekend. Like Liverpool, the Blues have two more cup matches before league action recommences, and a host of changes looks likely for their weekend visit of Bradford given that the second leg with Liverpool arrives just three days later, which could provide the likes of Loic Remy and Andre Schurrle with a chance to impress.

ROUTLEDGE RULED OUT FOR A MONTH

Swansea have confirmed that Wayne Routledge is set to be out for four weeks with the calf strain suffered during the weekend home loss to Chelsea. Meanwhile, Swans skipper Ashley Williams has been ruled out of his side’s FA Cup encounter with Blackburn this weekend due to a shoulder complaint, but should return to training next week.

The Scout Says: Having played all but two league matches for the Swans this season, Routledge’s loss will naturally come as a huge blow. However, yesterday’s announcement was accompanied by the news that Jefferson Montero has returned to full training after recovering from a hamstring injury suffered on Boxing Day. The Ecuadorian’s tally of four assists in his previous nine appearances is more than Routledge and Nathan Dyer have managed combined this season, and Montero now looks set to reclaim a starting role ahead of some kind clashes against Sunderland, West Brom and Burnley in his next five. Meanwhile, Williams’ anticipated quick recovery in time for Gameweek 23 will come as a relief to the Welsh side, who have now conceded 11 times in their last four league fixtures.

ELEPHANTS STUMBLE IN CUP OPENER

Wilfried Bony, Yaya Toure and Cheik Tiote were all handed starts as Ivory Coast earned a 1-1 draw with Guinea in their first African Cup of Nations fixture, with the former supplying the assist for his side’s equaliser after they were reduced to 10 men early in the second-half.

The Scout Says: Regardless of yesterday’s slight setback, the Elephants’ wealth of talent means they remain the favourites for the tournament. Should they indeed reach the final, Bony, Toure and Tiote will be out of contention for their respective sides until Gameweek 26, meaning they will miss the next three rounds of league fixtures. That could prove costly for Man City in particular, who certainly could have used the dominance of Toure and goal threat of new signing Bony in their 2-0 defeat to Arsenal last time out. With an all-important trip to Chelsea next on the agenda, there’s no doubt that the pair will be sorely missed once again; a repeat of the dismal attacking performance from Sunday’s match could spell disaster for the champions, who would slip eight points behind the Blues, should they lose. Surprisingly, Manuel Pellegrini opted for a lone striker system against the Gunners, despite the availability of Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic, but will surely turn to a two-man frontline as he attempts to reduce the deficit at the summit.

MANE READY TO MAKE ACoN BOW

Reports have revealed that Southampton’s Saido Mane is back in full training and should be fit for Senegal’s second ACoN match against South Africa on Friday.

The Scout Says: Mane’s return means that he has justified Senegal’s decision to select him in their 23-man squad, and with his side having already won their first match of the tournament, the winger could be on course to reach the knockout stages of the competition with another victory on Friday. With Mane fit again, then, Senegal’s progress in Africa looks set to have a direct impact on the pitch time of Southampton’s new boy Eljero Elia back on English soil; should they reach the final, Elia is certain to start at least the next three for the Saints, and if the 5.5-priced Dutchman can maintain the form that saw him grab a brace on Saturday, Mane will surely have a tough task to reclaim a starting berth upon his return to England.

Chamakh returning is bad for Puncheon right?

      Why?

Pardew wasn't playing him up front anyway was he?

They have Chamakh, Sangogo, Murray, Gayle all capable up front.

          Oh right...

Not sure Pardew would do that to be honest, judging from his Newcastle lineups, but it's really just guessing.

I think this may just be a case of over-thinking on your part. 😉

I'll give you advice if you give me yours on mine below??!!

Can you afford Krul as he rotates very nicely with Pants at only 4.4?

      Attack is great..
Mid looks good but doubt Elia will play every match? Not sure about Sanchez and Caz, but thats just me..I dont like two mids from same team..
      Defence Looks good to me!

Ive been thinking about ADM, but Man U are so unpredictable at the moment I've stayed away from them virtually the whole season, but they do have some good fixtures coming up so thats been a real headache for me.

Attacking same as mine, best options really.

Johnson is a good punt as he has great attacking potential and Boyd is great for rotation. Muniesa though is not always nailed on, and West Brom is always a good option for rotation as well.

I thought Bellerin looke great the other day so put him in mine as well, especially with Debuchy out for a while 🙂

I agree ref ADM but I feel I must have him as he is class and fixtures are great.. plus I know all my chasing pack have him..
Johnson, I am not sure about, but may as well try something different in my league and his games look good..

Muniesa, you are right, so maybe wilson instead as I just need a cheapo stoke defender really.. cameron may start playing I suppose?

If he shot a bit harder than my 4 y o daughter he would be even more of an option...

Totally agree. Has always had poor finishing and it hasn't really improved, don't really understand the fascination from an FPL perspective.

          Lacks balance IMO.

Koeman seems to have done something similar to the Giroud-Walcott partnership of a couple seasons ago. An inverted front 3 with the Mane/Elia player running beyond Pelle.

          I'd think:

          Mane/Elia Pelle Tadic

With 3 of Wanyama, Morgan, Davis, JWP, Cork behind.

    Draft #372647

    Foster Hamer

Downing needs replacement. Too much risk with Baird and bellerin, get myhil, I think Costa is a must so would get out fab and giroud. Tbh I don't think it's great. Silva and aguero is a lot of city as well. No Chelsea defender or hazard the list goes on

          Well that went well..

Defence is weak so will look at that and Downing fixtures poor but kept him as think maybe still decent value.

Did have Haz and could do that if I get rid of him, but not sure that Hazard/Costa are essential necessarily and Giroud is underrated IMO.

Silva double up is a fair point.

    Noticed this is BBC Gossip:

"Chelsea want to sign Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado, 26, but may have to sell Germany forward Andre Schurrle, 24, and 22-year-old Egypt winger Mohamed Salah first"

Really? Is Cuardrado that good that you sell a world cup winner and future star for him? I'd 100% say no.

Chelsea-City will very likely be a low scoring game. If you want a 1-week non-Aguero punt maybe look at another option. Falcao? Giroud?

Arsenal only have 2 senior CBs at the club. Never replaced Vermaelen. They need one more.

I don't think Wenger is overly impressed with Chambers and wants to take the pressure off him. He'll probably share the RB spot with Bellerin while Debuchy is out.

Will he cause rotation to make the current CB's a risk at times for FF or will he just be number 3?
Is this a sign that Chambers' game time will come at RB?

        I agree with that.

        A question for you Doosra...

Palace 2013-14 pre Pulis: 10 PL games, 9 defeats, 0 clean sheets
Palace 2013-14 with Pulis: 28 PL games, 10 defeats, 12 clean sheets

Pulis concentrates on defensive shape with a new team and reports are he's doing exactly that with WBA.

Can that be reflected in your ticker model? Does it cause you to change your view about WBAs upcoming fixtures at all?

I have already made my mind up about what I'll be doing re. the WBA defence. I'd just be interested in your view if you'd care to give it.

It already is being reflected - WBA's rating is going up. However, that is from an extremely low base.

Secondly, if you can be bothered, compare WBA's first 19 fixtures with their last 19. You will see what I mean.

Finally, look at their last 6.

My opinion on WBA is this

Their CS will be predictable for the most part, at home to all but the top sides and away to some of the lesser lights

Right now I don't see a WBA defender as a play every week pick (unless it's Foster) but they can work well in the right rotation

          3. Ruth_NZ
            • 11 Years
            11 years, 22 days ago

The last 5 fixtures are bad. I already knew that. But I expect to take my wildcard around GW 34 so that doesn't bother me.

Before that I see a lot of relegation clashes:
            Burnley (a)
            Sunderland (a)
            Villa (a)
            QPR (h)
            Leicester (h)
            Palace (a)

Often these are low scoring games. Villa-WBA could maybe break records for the fewest shots on target ever in a PL game I reckon. 😉

To me I can see lots of clean sheet opportunities for WBA up to GW 33 because Stoke (h) and Swansea (h) are good possibilities as well. But I am going on my reading of the teams and not on pure stats of course.

I think there are times when you need a statistical model to correct misguided opinions you might have. But I also think that sometimes you have to correct a statistical model to take account of eventualities it doesn't measure (like the arrival of Pulis). No?

Lukaku just got me an own goal.

Best: Kane - have had him for 9 GWs, he's averaged 7 PPG including that 18 point haul vs CHE.
Worst: Chester - benched for his 15 pointer GW 1 and then played him for his red card.

I like B as it lets you catch an existing bandwagon in Puncheon as well.

I see where you're coming from ENR. Think my question is, do you think that gets me more points though for solely this week? Koscielny should get me about 5 points more than Cresswell, Puncheon could get double digits based on his form but could mean benched points from Charlie and a 1 pointer from Cresswell.

          Oh definitely A then, Bea.

Didn't realize Siggy was on the bench. Was comparing the two options.

Nope, I just feel it's been too long since they've done it, winning is a habit and once you stop you take a while and a couple of only cup seasons to get it back.

The FA last year, on for a good FA / UCL run this year and Wenger finally seems to be addressing the CB / CDM trouble

I'd hardly say a 17 year old kid, and a rumour over one average centre back shows he is addressing the issues... 😉

Better than selling Vermalean. Step in the right direction..

Sure, but far from a step big enough to get us from where we are now, to winning the league.

Selling Vermaelen wasn't a bad thing though. He's been injured for months, but he still got a decent sum for him. The mistake was in not properly replacing him.

We'll see with the cups this year, could win neither of them. If they win one, get to the semi's of the other, not loose players and sign a world class CDM and Man City and Chelsea stay the same then we'll talk Arsenal for the title.

Do I lick my wounds and run back to the arms of Costa or stick with Aguero? I think Mourinho might go for the kill this weekend, and Costa might be worth giving the armband. Thoughts?

    Foster (Adrian)
Terry / Bertrand / Cameron (Hutton / Wasilewski)
Sanchez / Downing / Hazard / ADM (Boyd)
    Aguero / Kane / Austin

    Thanks for any advice

With Defoe coming is it good or bad for AJ?

They will play 3 5 2 with 2 strikers so AJ will play on the wing or CAM?
