As the dust was settling on a hectic, and at times bizarre opening weekend, it was time to pick through the scores, stats and highlights and scout out some more alternative options for this week’s ‘Differentials’. With dozens of new faces amongst the starting line-ups last weekend there were plenty to choose from, but in the end we settled on our final three. After last week’s ‘Differentials’ nearly outscored my entire FPL team, I’m hoping for another bumper week….

Russell Martin

Norwich skipper Russell Martin gets the first slot in this evening’s line-up. Coming in at 4.5 in FPL, he’s pricier than any other Canaries first-team defender and has suffered from investment as a consequence- while 4.0 Ritchie de Laet is owned by 110,223 Fantasy managers at the time of writing, Martin has been snapped up by just 5,553, which equates to 0.002%.

The club’s first home game of the season sees Stoke arrive at Carrow Road this Sunday and while the likes of De Laet and Zak Whitbread are kinder on the budget, Martin offers the greater potential. His raids down the right saw the full-back score 5 goals and picked up 2 assists for Paul Lambert’s side in the Championship last season; even if the home side concede, then, Martin’s attacking tendencies shows more promise at the other end of the pitch than the rest of the Norwich back-four.

Yohan Cabaye

Despite missing most of the pre-season, Yohan Cabaye impressed on his debut against Arsenal last weekend, and looks set to retain his starting spot for Newcastle’s tie against bitter rivals Sunderland. Without last season’s top scorer Kevin Nolan, Newcastle will be looking to Cabaye to provide a creative threat from midfield, and despite a dull game last week, Cabaye showed signs that he could become a key fantasy target over the season.

At Lille, Cabaye played a central playmaker role while also taking free kicks and penalties, and in the 09/10 season, he picked up 15 goals and 10 assists for his efforts. If he can produce anywhere near those sort of returns at Newcastle this season, then he will be excellent value at 6.0m, and his current ownership of just 0.9% will surely shoot up. It will be interesting to see if he takes on the majority of set pieces going forwards – Last weekend he shared free kicks with Joey Barton, so the jury is still out on that one.

Danny Graham

Any striker moving up to the Premier League from the Championship will find it much tougher to score, and as expected, Danny Graham struggled to get involved in Mondays game against Man City. As the central point of Swansea’s 4-2-3-1 system, Graham will get plenty of chances to score in easier fixtures, and he certainly knows how to put them away – he was the Championship’s top scorer last season with 24 goals, and also picked up 11 assists.

At 5.0m, Graham should slot into most fantasy sides very comfortably alongside a couple of big name strikers and with three home games in the next four against Wigan, Sunderland and West Brom, Graham should prove to be great value for the 2.2% of managers that have invested so far.

          OK Mark,

Dempsey is overpriced and 2 goals vs Dnipro means nothing in the premier league, also do not be fooled by the ticker Wolves and Newcastle away are not easy fixtures, he has to go.

Richards is a rotation risk, swap out for Kompany.

Rooney over RVP, you need cover from the champions, the best attacking player in the best team in the country on penalties with 2 home fixture vs dodgy defences...yes please.

Hey all! Hope there are no log on errors for anyone this week!! This will actually be my 1st RMT of the season, but I'm in a real pickle this time, so need help. I am going with a 5-2-3, hoping to capitalize on clean sheets in defense and plenty of fire power up top. Here it currently is:

    Hilario (Vorm)
    Kompany Brown Baines Bosingwa Young
    Silva Hoolahan (Ferguson,Surman,Moses)
    Rooney Aguero Torres

The obvious downfalls are: I've got 3 city players (who have an away game)
and the UNCERTAINTY surrounding Aguero's start and Torres ability to score
Can anyone point out anything else on the team above? I know my midfield and subs are quite dreadful, but there's a method to that sort of madness. To combat these problems I can convert the team into:

    Hilario (Vorm)
    Kompany Brown **Jagielka** Bosingwa Young
    Silva **A. Young** (Ferguson,Surman,Dyer)
    Rooney **Suarez** Torres

Also young can convert to Nani/VdV/Dempsey/Arshavin/Yaya/Walcott..
Any reply would be greatly appreciately. Thank you everyone.

Ah yeah... Dempsey is great, and he's had a bit of a run with Europa League matches as far as I know (think) so he's probably more match fit than most. He was the 4th or 5th highest scoring midfielder last season... if he replicates that form you're good.

Planning on saving a transfer next week, and then doing Torres + Rooney -> Aguero + RVP. Obviously also depends on how those players perform in next two weeks. But having a bit of money in the bank and saving the transfer will hopefully give me the flexibility to cover ARS & MCY in GW4.

The big problem here is that people on this site come with theirs opinion and than go out with someone else*s. It is ok that you get here confirmation of some dilema you have but it is not always good to follow every *crowd opinion*. So, last week everybody here only talked about Nani, and I chosed Rooney.... Now, everybody take Suarez, and I will go with Carroll... Let everyone think just for second about their OWN opinion about some players they chosed in their team...

nope, generally people have a good knowledge of FPL on this site so nobody is going to get taken in by someone talking out their hoop. for example, if i came on and told everyone to get jason roberts and clint hill into their teams i would be told where to go. this site definitely improves performance in the game itself.

5.0 = warnock I think. Tough doubling up on defenders but you could play Vorm in goal.

      great mid & strike force.

      1. Depends on if you buy a 5.0 villa player but I think both teams have a good shout at a cleanie. Swansea keep possession very well.

      2. aaagh! The honest answer is the one you don't want - no one knows. The only real answer to this is that Cole and Terry are probably your best bet for nailed on defenders. Cech when fit. So you could work something clever with cech and hilario as your keepers - it'll make your goalies more expensive but it may make your defence cheaper with chelsea cover (& you need to hope Hilario plays).

      3. No one knows for sure. An answert here is just speculation.

      4. Warnock, with the option to play Vorm.

      5. Personally I think attacking City cover is handy to have, but if you don't fancy them away to Bolton, and you think Everton will keep a cleanie, then you could go

      de laet & yaya (12.0) -> distin & sessegnon (12.0)

giving you cover for everton over the next few weeks, and sess with a shot at a few goals...

After an atrocious start to the season I have two players remaining from GW1: Given, Moses. Hopefully the new fellahs can lead me to the Promised Land.

Think Rooney and young is overkill on utd attack cover. Rooney should be enough.

Change young to sess and brown to baines

Only United cover i'd want is Rooney. Arsenal look weak at moment, maybe swap Rooney in for Van Persie?

Very very tempted but been stung by lack of RVP in the past and I can't get past it...... I have also had a feeling about him all week with fabregas leaving and him being given the captaincy, Nasri unlikely so he will be on all free kicks, corners and pens.....

Man utd against my beloved spurs is always a classic game and likely to have a few goals courtesy of the (non) bald fella.... It's really tough...

Really? I am pretty chuffed with it....

        Hoola - free kicks, pens
        Sinclair - pens
Sess - free kicks and pens
Dempsey - class and in scoring mode after mid week double
