Christian Eriksen scores twice as Spurs clinch a place in the Capital One Cup final. Yaya Toure and Wilfried Bony are set to miss City’s weekend trip to Chelsea, Senegal are seeking a domestic ban for fit-again Diafra Sakho, whilst Ryan Taylor is close to another comeback for Newcastle.

ERIKSEN AT THE DOUBLE

A Christian Eriksen brace earned Tottenham a place in the Capital One Cup final last night. Mauricio Pochettino made eight changes to his starting XI for the clash with Sheffield United, with Eriksen, Erik Lamela and Mousa Dembele fielded in the attacking midfield spots behind Harry Kane. After firing his side ahead from a free-kick in the first half, Eriksen was put through by Kane late on to notch the equaliser after the Blades had rallied back to 2-1, ensuring that Spurs progressed with a 3-2 aggregate victory come the final whistle.

The Scout Says: Perhaps not a wholly convincing performance from Pochettino’s side but, regardless, all eyes will now be on March 1 when they take on Chelsea at Wembley. Resultantly, their Gameweek 27 trip to QPR will have to be rescheduled, and considering both clubs are already out of the FA Cup, they could, potentially, shift the match to hand them a pair of fixtures as soon as Gameweek 25 or 28, i.e. weekends that have been set aside for FA Cup fixtures. At present, it’s still a tricky schedule coming up before then, though, with Arsenal, Liverpool and West Ham on the agenda in Spurs’ next four, though Eriksen is still likely to earn plenty of attention in the coming weeks, with yesterday’s brace adding to his strike against Sunderland in his last league outing; at 8.2, the Dane now sits fifth in the Fantasy Premier League midfield rankings, and could offer a double-up option with Kane for those backing Spurs to produce across that tough schedule.

TOURE AND BONY TO MISS TO CHELSEA CLASH

A win for Ivory Coast against Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations (ACoN) yesterday ensured that Man City duo Yaya Toure and Wilfried Bony will miss their side’s crucial clash with Chelsea this weekend. The Elephants progressed through to the quarter final stages of the tournament with a 1-0 victory, though Toure’s role in that match could be in doubt after he limped off towards the end of last night’s fixture holding his hamstring, though the midfielder was reported to state post-match that “there is no problem”.

The Scout Says: With City still yet to win a league encounter without Toure in their side this season, yesterday’s news will undoubtedly come as a huge blow to Manuel Pellegrini, considering the Citizens’ current form. A 2-0 defeat to Arsenal at home in their previous league fixture was followed by the same result against Championship outfit Middlesbrough last weekend, and with Saturday evening’s potential title decider against Chelsea now looming, the Blues could really have used the boost of Toure and Bony’s return. With City having scored just once in their last three matches in all competitions, the onus will now be on the likes of David Silva and Sergio Aguero to show their world-class credentials against Jose Mourinho’s men, who have conceded one goal in their last eight home league matches. The form book will need to be written, then, if the Champions are to overcome the current league leaders, though as Bradford demonstrated on Saturday: never say never.

SENEGAL DEMAND SAKHO BAN

Diafra Sakho could face a ban after Senegal’s FA filed an official complaint with FIFA yesterday. The Hammers striker had pulled out of the ACoN with a back complaint only to appear for his club during Sunday’s FA Cup clash against Bristol City. West Ham co-owner David Sullivan was quick to respond to the claims:

‘A top back surgeon said Sakho can’t fly and he still can’t fly, he went by car to Bristol and is going by train to Liverpool. How can we go against medical advice? We are sure any FIFA hearing will vindicate us. The player missed four games as a result of injuries incurred whilst playing for Senegal. We have done nothing untoward.’

The Scout Says: After grabbing the winner in his weekend substitute appearance, Sakho has now notched in each of his last two outings in all competitions for West Ham, and Sam Allardyce’s side are likely to fight their corner when it comes to the forward’s punishment. Reports suggest that Senegal want to see Sakho banned for the next couple of Gameweeks, ensuring that he would remain unavailable for the entirety of the ACoN, though the former Metz man could face an even longer ban depending on how FIFA view the situation. Should he be handed a lengthy absence, Enner Valencia’s first team starts will continue to look secure, though the Hammers’ upcoming schedule should dissuade most from investment right now (liv, MNU, sou, tot).

TAYLOR ON VERGE OF RETURN

Newcastle defender Ryan Taylor has revealed that he is set to make his comeback from a knee injury in two weekends’ time.

The Scout Says: With Hull, Stoke, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace in the Magpies’ next five, investment in their backline – who have failed to register a clean sheet since Gameweek 12 – suddenly doesn’t seem like such a bad idea. Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara have been utilised at left-back in the Tyneside team’s previous two, though with the former now a doubt for this weekend due to a hamstring problem, there is a chance that Taylor could convince John Carver that he is worthy of a start when he makes his return. With just over 40 minutes of league football under his belt this season, however, it is more likely that he will be eased back into action, and the extra layout for the 5.3-priced Daryl Janmaat still looks the best option for those interested in the Magpies’ rearguard.

Hi everyone, first time poster here. Had planned on using the wildcard next week but with Costa's impeding three match ban and my desperation to get Alexis I've used it now. Any feedback would be appreciated.

    De Gea
    Koscielny Bellerin Clyne
Alexis (c) Silva Hazard Eriksen Walters
    Aguero Gayle

    subs: Kane Wisdom Dummet

    Active WIldcard (I did):

    Costa > Aguero
    Sterling > Sanchez
    Collins > Koscielny
Downing > Walters (didn't want to but Downing's fixtures are v.tough)
    Lescott > Wisdom (save money)
    Mangala > Bellerin
    Austin > Gayle (save money)

Some nice differentials, unsure about the Arsenal double up at the back though.

Thanks! Yeah I know, risking it on Bellerin. Planning to swap him in enar future for a O'shea or a Collins at 4.5 if they have a favourable home game!

PVA could be useful instead. Great home games, and playing as an advanced full back/wing back.

Looks good. Not much for you to change, really.

I wouldn't double up on Arsenal defence though, their games and their defence are hit and miss. Try and get a Chelsea one in to replace Kos? That'd probably mean downgrading De Gea, or Moses if you don't want a benching headache every week.

I like your choice of goalkeepers. You'll probably end up playing De Gea most weeks but that's no bad thing given their fixtures, form and the fact they tend to force a lot of shots from outside the box. Couple this with his handling ability, and you should see a decent number of save points in addition to clean sheets. My only concern would be that Valdes has apparently been very impressive in training but apparently that's resulted in him attracting interest from Seville and Villareal (seems a bit early for him to be moving on I know). The latter in particular could do with a keeper and they could nip any potential problem in the bud.

I've just compared your defence to the season ticker and it's pretty much a sea of blue (that's a good thing). You, of course, only really need 3 blues per week (assuming you intend to play a back 3 most weeks) and you have that at least up until GW28. Only 1 even slight concern as far as nailed-onness is concerned and that's Bellerin. He's already got Chambers breathing down his neck and they're reportedly looking at another RB. Thing is, if they get the other RB, it could mean they loan out Bellerin and then it makes things very easy for you to simply replace him with the new RB. Only drawback to this defence - do you think you've perhaps spent a little too much on it? Thing is, it's not like you've even just bought a couple of big hitters and then are rotating 3 4m's - this would only require 2 fts to get the funds out to distribute to the front 8. You've actually spent a bit more than necessary on each defender. It'd take 5 fts just to get all the funds out and thats before you even start redistributing. I guess this is an OK tactic if you still have another WC but otherwise, bear in mind that there are only about 14 gws and therefore 14fts left. This is however the business end of the season and perhaps you just have more TV than you know what to do with.

Your midfield is excellent. Sanchez and Hazard are pretty much a given. Silva isn't quite a differential but there are a few that are overlooking him. You might already have done so but if not, and you're in any doubt about this pick, I'd suggest taking a look at his underlying stats and those of the teams he's playing in the next 6. I'd suggest that 4, maybe even 5 of them, are going to find it very difficult to cope with him. He's pretty much designed to tear teams like those apart. Walters is a great pick for the next 5 - 6 by which point we'll hopefully have a bit more information regarding DGWs and he'll be ideal fodder to take out for someone who, by that stage, will be a more appropriate candidate. Eriksen is an obvious pick at the moment but have you taken a look at his fixtures? I'm not even just talking about the next 6. I'm talking about between now and the end of the season. I think this may be somewhere you might benefit from a differential. Bear in mind that Spurs are in Europe and so you're likely to suffer blanks. This is a bit out there, but have you considered Gareth Barry? You'd still have someone you're comfortable with benching week in, week out. You'd still have a guaranteed starter, And you'd have someone with a chance of a DGW somewhere along the line. Didn't he take pens at one stage too?

The strikers are what I'd expect and, long term at least, probably the best options. The big hitter speaks for himself and Kane looks the best of the rest. This really isn't somewhere I'd be looking for a differential and while the fixtures for this trio don't look all that enticing, form is what matters here. Kane might actually be better suited to playing some of the teams he's facing anyway. I've been impressed all season by his aerial prowess, his strength and his overall presence. He could have another 10 goals in him between now and the end of the season.

Overall I'd give you an 8.5/10 but hopefully with the feedback you can turn it into a 9.5 (there's no such thing as a 10 in FPL - not without hindsight anyway).

Really appreciate you taking the time to write that. Really interesting stuff.

We've had the same mini league for four years now and last year I won it - just. I'm currently on 1144 points, 3 behind the leader but the top 5 are all within 60 points of eachother. Very tight.

I have one wildcard left now. It's going to be close!

Thanks for this and thanks everyone else too. Best of luck guys. Hopefully going to be a more prominent poster now.

      Where's Davis?

Underrated, no FPL interest but a very key part of their team. Will play most games, with JWP playing when he's rested.

Tadic, Mane and Elia will rarely, if ever, start a game together.

Here is my take on the Costa situation
A three or four game ban is going to make a mocha of our teams and plans, obviously we have a few options to replace him but Costa was a good cap(tain)puccino option. Many people have espresso (d) interest in the likes of giroud.
I won't lose any money on him myself as I only got him latte (ly). But for others it could be hurt to sell and bring back latte(r) for DGW.
What it does give us is some spare cash and a chelsea spot to fill, I think it would be (Al) White to double up at the black with defenders.

Okay first season doing this and very much enjoying it. Lurking around the top 10k and winning my cash league. Anyway, I'm a little confused as to how to best take advantage of the DGW situation. Not in terms of how it actually works but the actual strategy of navigating it. I'm on WC this week, have Austin, Kane and Eriksen with modest price gains but was planning on ditching due to fixtures.

When do they announce the date for the rescheduled game?
Do I hold in the hopes the dgw comes in week 25 and then get rid?
Do I get rid now and buy some back later?
Do I not even think about it?

Not really hoping for specific advice but just a general overview of tactics would be very much appreciated.

    Many thanks

I never really went over board with double gameweeks. Considering you can only transfer out 1, if might mean you cant field 11 when they have their blank gameweek.

You have to plan it well and save you FTs to really pull it off

You can look at current schedule and get an idea when games could be played to make DGW.
Basically just rule out weeks with Europe matches scheduled. It is really too early to tell when and who will have any, other than the coc finalist. Things such as progress in fa cup and Europe can impact on schedule.
You also have to consider who it involves, don't go thinking that just because someone like everton has one they would be betterqn say arsenal with one game

I think I'm gonna roll the dice with a 4 pointer on Costa -> Rooney/Falcao (LEI) rather than start Downing (liv).

I can see quite a few United goals at home to that defence so the upside feels a lot greater.

    Yay or Nay?

WC is quite extreme no? I think the extra information (starting roles, ACON returners, DGW news etc) we will get after another week is worth the 4 points.

Plus, everyone loves a 1 week punt.

Would triple Arsenal attack be overkill this week? I'm wildcarding next week so it's only for the Villa game where I think they could score three or four. Have Sánchez and will most likely captain him, looking to do Sigurdsson & Costa -> Cazorla & Giroud for -4. Benching Kane in that scenario. Madness?

Alternatively I could keep Siggy, just do Costa -> Giroud with my FT and play Kane.

    Team looks like this:

    Pantilimon
    Baines, Terry, Trippier
    Sánchez, Hazard, Silva, Eriksen
    Costa, Kane, Naismith

    (Eliott, Sigurdsson, B.Davies, Hutton)
