Wayne Rooney is shifted up front as United edge past Preston at Deepdale. Jose Mourinho confirms Diego Costa will start against PSG tonight, Tim Sherwood talks up Christian Benteke’s prospects, West Ham could be set to welcome back two centre-halves this weekend, whilst Mile Jedinak is expected to return for Palace’s clash with Arsenal.

United into Last Eight

Louis van Gaal’s side came from behind to clinch a 3-1 win at Preston last night. The United boss fielded Wayne Rooney alongside Radamel Falcao up top and handed Marouane Fellaini the role in “the hole”, whilst Ander Herrera was handed a rare start on the right of the midfield diamond as a result of Rooney’s change of position. Herrera, Fellaini and Rooney all found the net, though the latter’s strike came as a consequence of a debatable spot-kick award.

The Scout Says: The absence of Robin van Persie finally afforded Rooney his favoured role after months of being mired in central midfield. After the match, Van Gaal confirmed he expects Van Persie to be fit for the weekend clash against Swansea, though, leaving him a dilemma up front yet again. Herrera’s display in the middle may convince Van Gaal to partner Rooney with Van Persie, though, after another poor display from Falcao. Indeed, it was the Colombian’s withdrawal on the hour mark, allied with a change in tactics and the introduction of Ashley Young, that brought about the turnaround in fortunes as the Red Devils progressed despite yet another underwhelming performance.

Benteke central to Sherwood’s plans

Tim Sherwood watched on from the stands as his newly inherited Aston Villa side gained entry into the FA Cup quarter-finals on Sunday afternoon by way of a 2-1 victory over Leicester City. During his official unveiling on Monday, the former Tottenham boss revealed what he said to the players after a goalless first half, a speech that underlined the need to involve Christian Benteke:

“[I told them] to play with less fear. I thought it was a bit tentative. We had to get [Christian] Benteke more in the game. There’s a little bit of apprehension around the place. They need to play with a bit more confidence then everything will be fine. He probably needs a goal for his confidence. If he scores goals that will breed confidence and more will follow. It’s not a one-man team. He needs to recapture the form that we all know because all the best clubs in the world were after him. He will need to be helped out by the rest of the squad. They need to step up to the plate.”

The Scout Says: Despite being utilised as a sub for the last two matches of Paul Lambert’s tenure, Benteke’s underlying stats remained highly impressive. The big Belgian may have failed to score in each of the last eight Gameweeks but produced more touches in the box (68) and attempts from close-range (21) than any other forward in the top-flight. Although it’s remiss to completely absolve Benteke of blame for his scoring drought, the lack of creativity from midfield under Lambert’s tenure was Villa’s most glaring deficiency – Ashley Westwood, Tom Cleverley and Fabian Delph created less chances combined (63) than Cesc Fabregas (66) managed on his own. There were signs in the second half of the FA Cup tie that this is set to change under their new manager, as this midfield trio laid on seven chances for Benteke in the second half, having only fashioned three in the first 45 minutes. Sherwood will look to build on this as Villa embark on an excellent run of fixtures (STO, new, WBA, sun, SWA) that could provide the perfect platform for the 7.4-priced Benteke to rediscover his scoring touch.

Collins and Reid could face Tottenham

West Ham defensive duo Winston Reid and James Collins are set to resume training this week after a three-match injury layoff and could return in time to face Tottenham Hotspur in Sunday’s derby.

Discussing the club’s injury situation, Sam Allardyce went on to say:

“We’ve got a good recovery period now. We’ll have our usual post-game routine and then it’s the big derby on Sunday against Spurs. We’ll have some of our injured players back to bolster the squad, which will help, and hopefully we’ll bounce straight back at Tottenham.”

The Scout Says: News of the pair’s return to training will come as sweet relief to the Hammers boss, after he had to endure a painful watch last Saturday when his defence were breached on four occasions by a rampant West Brom. In the absence of two recognised centre-backs, midfield enforcer Cheikhou Kouyate filled in alongside James Tomkins – a partnership that yielded the Irons’ worst defeat of the season. These defensive reinforcements arrive at just the right time for West Ham in light of the four consecutive London match-ups (tot, CRY, CHE, ars) on their schedule. Nonetheless, such an unforgiving run should dissuade most Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers from investing in the 5.0-priced Reid and 4.5-priced Collins – at least until West Ham’s fixtures improve from Gameweek 30 onwards (SUN, lei, STO).

Costa to start this evening

Despite conceding that Diego Costa isn’t fully fit as a result of his recent three-match domestic ban, Jose Mourinho confirmed that the striker will spearhead Chelsea’s attack against Paris Saint Germain on Tuesday evening, ahead of Didier Drogba and Loic Remy.

“Yes, I start him. But I don’t think it’s good for a player to be three weeks, or three matches, without starting a game. So I don’t think he’s in the best of his condition. But, at the same time, [Loic] Remy and [Didier] Drogba have played in the last three matches. Obviously it is important for them to have minutes and confidence. I know that I have them both ready for the game, too.”

The Scout Says: Chelsea may have extended their lead over City in Costa’s enforced absence but with just four goals scored in the three matches without him, it’s easy to see just why Mourinho is so desperate for his return. Drafted in by almost 120,000 FPL managers this week, Costa – despite facing a blank Gameweek 27 – is the number on transfer target by some distance ahead of Chelsea’s weekend home encounter with Burnley. Given his lack of match sharpness, though, Costa’s minutes tonight will need to be monitored – if Mourinho rations his pitch time, many non-owners may decide to avoid for the Clarets clash if the Spain international is eased back into the fray, with Remy and Drogba offering the Blues’ boss weekend alternatives.

Jedinak in line for weekend return

Crystal Palace captain Mile Jedinak is optimistic he has shaken off the ankle complaint that had sidelined him since returning from the Asia Cup. The Aussie midfielder told Sky sports News HQ that he’s growing restless on the bench as he watches his team-mates thrive under new manager Alan Pardew.

“We’ll just have to wait and see if I play against Arsenal, but at this stage it is going really well. I’m not the best of watchers. When you have to go to a game and watch your team, I’m not the best at that, but it is what it is. I’m there and I support my team-mates. It’s been great to feel the buzz around here. I’m itching to get back out there and be involved in that first hand.”

The Scout Says: It’s testament to Pardew’s positive impact since he took the helm at Selhurst Park that the Eagles have steadily accrued points without Jedinak’s influential presence. Despite missing Palace’s last six league ties, he’s still their joint-top goalscorer (five goals) alongside Dwight Gayle, all the while providing a formidable buffer for the rearguard. Jedinak’s potential return against the Gunners, allied with Yannick Bolasie’s availability after his recent international duties, means we could get a better idea of Pardew’s first-choice midfield as the Gunners roll up to Selhurst Park. With back-to-back trips to West Ham and Southampton to follow, many will be prepared to steer clear of Palace’s assets until the fixtures turn better in Gameweek 29.

All those who think that Rooney's dive was intentional and he cheated to get a penalty , I have two questions for you .

    1. What was Rooney's alternative ?

    2. What would you have done ? (answer this only if you've played a decent amount of football)

    1. Tinmen

Still a dive no matter what way you look at it.

If it had of been Suarez/Ashley Young?

It was a foul by the keeper no matter what . Had he not dived , the keeper would have smashed into him thereby conceding a penalty anyway . Its just reflex , Rooney was protecting himself , Nobody wants to get their ankles broken

There is no clear line between diving and not diving. Yes, you do have the extreme of "he definitely dived!!!", but this is not one of the case. The FACT is Rooney jumped to avoid contact by an immensely reckless goalkeeper. The second FACT is if he had not done so he would have been seriously injured. The debate is whether he should have fallen. I don't think that's a choice. People say it's diving because there was no contact and therefore he could've continued running. That's insane. Watch the video of his fall again. His pace was seriously disrupted. When you are running at that speed, you don't simply do a little hop over the goalie and continue. While it's pretty reasonable that he fell after he jumped, it's not reasonable to conclude therefore he went to the ground on purpose.

The second point of contention is whether or not, regardless of Rooney's dive-or-not-dive-conundrum, there should have been a penalty. The rules are clear. You CAN give a penalty for ATTEMPTS to run down an opponent or to trip an opponent inside the penalty area. If Rooney hadn't jumped (which again, can we not pretend as if it was easy for him to have avoided it in the first place? for all you guys can tell from your slow-mo reviews on your lazy sofas, you don't have the faintest idea how hard that is in actual practice, so never mind continue running afterwards), the goalie would have seriously injured someone with that move. The reckless and careless attempt is enough to warrant a penalty, because ATTEMPTS matter (i.e. what could've happened and not necessarily what happened). Unfortunately football is designed in such a way that referees will rarely give penalties for "attempts" unless the game has been interrupted (i.e. diving or falling). So perhaps Rooney will not have receive the penalty if he had not fallen. But in THEORY, the ref is qualified to grant that penalty EVEN IF Rooney hadn't fallen from the goalie's actions. Even better, he actually did fall (through avoiding injuries and not due to contact, but still).

This is nonsense. It was a reckless challenge certainly, but Rooney does not dive to avoid contact, he dives AFTER he is past the keeper.

well you can only get some perspective if you ever try to play at that intensity . The speed at which rooney was running was insane .. Its impossible to jump up and stay on ur feet unless you are a leopard

Momentum is not an issue here. He actively dived to win a penalty. He was still on his feet after he passed the keeper, it was only then did he decide to go down

          Watch it.

Firstly, it isn't even dangerous. At 1 second you can see that Rooney hasn't been touched by the goalkeeper, and 2 seconds you can see him throw his legs.

I honestly cannot understand how anyone can think otherwise. I just wonder how far the game has fallen where there can be any debate over such an obvious case...

it was an insanely rash challenge if you speed it up to real time . Slow motion doesn't really show the speed with which the goalie made the slide .

Deliberately jamming his toe into the ground to fall on the floor theatrically was not protecting himself. If self-protection was the objective, he'd had just jumped over the keeper and landed on his feet - avoiding the collision with the floor entirely.

    Any chance of advice please?

Planning on this team for weekend:

    Foster
    Ivan // Bellerin // Clyne // PVA
    Haz // ADM // Alexis
    Kun // Kane // Giro

    Pants - Downing -- Wolls - JWP

1 FT which I am looking to save, so will have 2 before the blanks. Looking to use 1 to get rid of double sunderland.

    Thinking either

    A) Pants - Krul (Rotates pretty well with Foster)
    B) PVA - Naughton

    Thoughts?

Even more so that my ML rival captained Giroud. 0 x 2 = 0.
So technically I am 4 up because of it. (Sanchez (C) = 4, Defoe 2)

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    The Cost of Costa

Will Costa prove to be the key Gameweek 26 differential? Or will those that draft him in regret their decision, as he faces a blank and is just two yellow cards away from a two match ban?

    1. Bolivian Seaman
      • 15 Years

I think he's a great differential. The third striker spot is a differential, I don't mind having Giroud but I'd rather have Costa.

He should do well for the 1 game, but after that you wouldn't want to own him. Can anyone afford to use luxury transfers so close to a blank and DGW?

If he had a double GW28 he may be worth it, but that seems unlikely...

He would have to score 3-4 goals to make it worthwhile in the long run, not that he isn't capable, but it could destabilize your team for some time.

If you have two free transfers this week and the cash in the bank then I think it is a good move tbh. I doubt many will be in that position though as you can hardly get rid of Kun this week

I think a lot depends on whether they have a DGW in 28 or not.

If you do have the money in the bank, then yeah it's worth a shot for sure.

I couldn't get him in even if I wanted to, but I'm guessing most people have a Chelsea defender, Hazard and Kane, so if you get Costa, you're either sacrificing a transfer next week, or playing with 10 men. Doesn't seem wise to me, even before thinking about his potential ban.

jose doesn't think he's in great condition atm, which suggests that he will need a few games to get back to his best form. His timing could be off now, leading to bookings. Two more and he misses another 2 games, which will dent any momentum in form, he has built up

Thanks, didn't realize that Fabregas was still a doubt.

I just find Aguero more explosive and with Yaya back I can see him having a chance, overall

not sure what to expect from that particular matchup.

Can't really think of other strikers, maybe Muller could be a better option.

Got the classic goalkeeper dilemma: Panti (WBA) or Foster (sun)?

Was all set on Panti due to save points but I'm thinking West Brom are looking like the better team right now and more likely to score...

Me too. I also have Van Aarnolt, so i'll probably go Foster and not double up. Could be 0-0.

I went Colback for his set piece involvement but unfortunately he is a card magnet and could easily miss gw 27 as he is on 9 yellows, the only week I would probably play him too.

Cork, Ameobi, and a few others are min price options, but tbh I would just be boring and get Boyd. The likes of Walters, Moses any other 5+m player are too expensive to have on your bench every week imo

Haidara/Cawson/Mawson/Aldi for me. Probably Haidara now that Dummet is injured.

I swapped to Naughton. I find his fixtures pair better with my van Aanholt than do Haidara's. Haidara also has a hinky run of matches coming, one good, one bad until week 33, making him unusable half the time.

A lot of big names, it's the smaller less-picked players that will shoot you up the ranks.
