Sergio Aguero nets City’s consolation as Barcelona grab a 2-1 Champions League first-leg advantage at the Etihad. Nemanja Matic’s suspension is reduced by the FA, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is back in full training for Arsenal, whilst the problems mount up front for United.

City duo shine again

Sergio Aguero and David Silva combined to claw a goal back for Manchester City in their 2-1 home defeat to La Liga giants Barcelona. The Spanish playmaker executed a deft flick into the path of the Sky Blues’ Argentine striker, who then lifted the ball across goal and beyond the reach of German shot-stopper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

In terms of line-ups, Manuel Pellegrini once again rolled out a 4-4-2 formation, and with Yaya Toure suspended, handed James Milner a central midfield role as Edin Dzeko partnered Aguero up top. New boy Wilfried Bony earned 22 minutes off the bench as a replacement for the Bosnian, with Aguero afforded the full 90 minutes.

Pellegrini’s decision to opt for two up front came in for some criticism but after the match, the City boss cited the dismissal of Gael Clichy as the main reason for his side’s narrow loss and refuted suggestions his tactics handed the visitors an advantage:

“No, I am very happy with the way we played. It was the way we must play against Barcelona. Barcelona will always dominate in some parts of the game like the midfield. With the way we play, I think we can do it (qualify). It is important not to make the same mistakes. We cannot have a player sent off every game against Barcelona. But we have a chance. We must try to do it there. It is important for this team to continue in the Champions League as far as possible.”

The Scout Says: Barcelona dominated the first 45 minutes at the Etihad, cruising into a 2-0 lead courtesy of a Luis Suarez brace. It wasn’t until the second half that the Premier League outfit began to exercise some control, leading to the passage of play that Aguero finished off with aplomb. The former Atletico Madrid frontman – who’s now netted four times in his last three outings in all competitions – showed he can deliver the goods in the most testing of scenarios, illustrating his fixture-proof value ahead of a tough trip to Anfield this weekend. Likewise, Silva’s delightful assist – his third in as as many starts – underlines his sensational form of late, which could encourage a multitude of Fantasy managers to invest in the 9.5-priced midfielder ahead of Chelsea and Tottenham’s blank Gameweek 27.

Matic ban reduced

Nemanja Matic, who was dismissed in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday due to violent conduct, saw his three-match ban reduced by the FA to two fixtures following an appeal from the London club.

The Scout Says: In the only league match that Matic hasn’t started this campaign, Chelsea fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United – their first loss of the season. With John Obi Mikel currently injured, Jose Mourinho’s options in defensive midfield look limited and it’s likely he’ll have to install Ramires in the double-pivot alongside Cesc Fabregas for the Capital One cup final and the trip to West Ham United in Gameweek 28.

Oxlade-Chamberlain close to return

Ahead of Arsenal’s Champions League clash against AS Monaco, Arsene Wenger revealed that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has returned to full training, while Jack Wilshire is being rested off the back of a recent heavy training schedule:

“The only uncertainty I have at the moment is Jack Wilshere but everybody else is available. He was rested [at training], because he trained hard until now. No, it’s not a setback but I don’t think [he’ll play against Monaco].”

The Scout Says: The return of Oxlade-Chamberlain (6.2 in FPL) increases the competition for places among an already stacked roster of wingers and playmakers. With Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla looking difficult to even rotate right now, Oxlade-Chamberlain will now add competition to the midfield four which has already seen Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck alternate in recent matches. Oxlade-Chamberlain’s reinstatement in the matchday squad casts further doubts over Walcott’s ability to secure regular playing time – despite scoring in each of his last two starts, the latter again dropped to the bench and was an unused substitute in last weekend’s tie against Crystal Palace. Walcott has yet to play two consecutive league matches since returning from long-term injury – a clear sign of the strength and depth that looks set to frustrate Fantasy managers once again.

Van Gaal’s depleted strike force

James Wilson picked up a knock playing for Manchester United’s reserves and will be assessed at the Red Devils’ Carrington training complex. Meanwhile, Robin van Persie – who left the Liberty Stadium on crutches last Saturday – is expected to sit out the next home clash against Sunderland.

The Scout Says: Wayne Rooney has primarily been deployed in a midfield three under Louis van Gaal’s stewardship, yet the recent fluctuating fitness of Van Persie and Radamel Falcao has seen the England international occupy a striker berth in the manager’s favoured 4-1-2-1-2 set-up. Rooney looks set to retain that role for the third successive match if his Dutch team-mate doesn’t recuperate in time, and with none of United’s strike force excelling, a dominant display from the 29-year-old against the Black Cats could prolong his spell up front. Although Wilson has played second fiddle to the more eminent forwards in United’s roster, his potential absence would serve to further reduce their attacking options off the bench and possibly persuade Van Gaal to utilise Marouane Fellaini in an advanced role again.

Any other week that would be sensible, but this week it seems likely you would have other priorities?

      1. N_Fatattack 42
        • 14 Years
        10 years, 9 months ago

Well I've got 11 players (including PvA, so probably 10). I'm not gonna sub out Eriksen, Kane or Hazard for a hit. The Rooney punt would only be worth it if this happens to be the game he announces his comeback with a hattrick AND if Aguero starts to play less minutes in the upcoming fixtures given Champs League priorities.

I won't do it though. It's just too risky. Was just wondering what peoplet thought about it.

Wait, do you HAVE Rooney and transferring him out, or you own Aguero and getting rid of him? Don't sell Aguero at all. If you have Rooney; I'd say just leave it one more week, then make the move with your double FT

Who to drop for Austin's DGW?

    Falcao - Welbeck - Bony

Im thinking Falcao, despite RVP being out for this week it's only a matter of time until Falcao is relegated to the bench full time.

Right decision? Or would you choose someone else??

What a sad day for Football!!! 🙁
FIFA gave in to Qatar rescheduling World Cup 2022 to November and December.
On top of that they decided that no apology is necessary and clubs will be not compensated!
    Petrodollars won but what's next?!?
Maybe they will change rules so Qatar can hire mercenaries and give them citizenship as they have done in Handball 2015 World Cup 🙁

I don't have a problem with it being played in the middle east - it is the World Cup after all so anywhere in the world shouldn't be excluded from hosting it if it is capable of hosting. If domestic seasons have to be shifted around a bit, so be it. Every other sport seems to manage it ok with no whinging.

It wasn't capable of hosting it though was it ?...It didn't have the right safe climate and it didn't have the stadiums. Now we have the soccer world having to change to accommodate them and a bunch of stadiums being built by almost slave labour to the point of people being killed in dreadful conditions.

Already happens. Diego Costa plays for Spain. Raheem Sterling plays for England.
Both born in other countries. No family lineage ties.

As for Nov/Dec tournamemt. Im not fussed. Ive always wanted football moved to be a summer sport. Who wants to sit freezing in a stadium in wet cold winter? Playing is also better in summer and it suits good footballing sides.

And on top of this, players are often injured or knackered or carrying knocks come summer after 60 odd game seasons. If they play it mid season they are fresher, fitter and in peak form. Makes for better tournamemt then.

My only problem is times of games will be a joke in Qatar for European/South American viewers (i.e. Footballs real fans). I actually would like to see football seasons begin in February and end in November with and have Dec/Jan off instead of June/July and half of August

Mainly opposition threat. Ins is in red hot form and Newcastle aren't. Crouchy pops up with goals with remarkable consistency.

If you had to pick one to keep:

    A) Cazorla

    B) Sanchez

I'm in the same position. Although keeping Cazorla seems the thing to do, I think when it comes down to it, I'll be too scared to go without Sanchez.

    Lloris,
    Caulker, Ivan, Schlupp
    Eriksen, Hazard, Mahrez, Cambiasso.
    Austin, Kane (C), Costa.

    Subs: Green, Ramsey, Chester, Vlaar.

Good to go this week, or do I transfer anyone?

I currently have Aguero, Sturridge, Kane frontline

    For GW28 do I:

Keep Sturridge who's good stats haven't yet turned into Fantasy points vs defensive woes of Burnley OR
switch to Austin for the DGW

What do we think about Clichy? Will Pelegrini drop him as a punishment? He doesn't seem too happy with the lad, but I believe the consensus is that Clichy is best to line up against Liverpool.

Hmm - Kolarov could get some games but he's just better defensively.

Maybe Pelli will play Sagna as left-back. He's a way better defender than Clichy and Kolarov.

      1. Sharkytect
        • 11 Years

Really? Why doesn't he normally play left-back?

Sagna is a right-back and was brilliant for Arsenal. I guess atm Pelli sticks with Sagna and Zaba at right back and Clichy and Kolarov as left-backs. But Sagna and Zaba are the better defenders / players so maybe he should try playing Sagna OOP...

If that's true he might consider trying it ahead of the Barca return leg. That would be bad news for me.
But yeah, he has two dedicated defenders for each position; it can actually be a bit confusing for a defender top switch sides (sounds sarcastic, but there is logic), and I hope he won't risk it, even if Sagna is better defensively.

Was he a right back earlier in his Chelsea career?

The other big GW28 problem is who to ditch for Eriksen (not having him would be a huge setback if he scores big)

Hazard - risen 0.1 since purchase
    Silva - 0.3
    Ozil - 0.2
    Cazorla - 0.3

OR don't go with Eriksen and do Boyd > Philips and have a benching headache

    1. Black Knights
      • 13 Years
      10 years, 9 months ago

You'll need Eriksen. Don't worry about price rises, do who you think will score least. One of the Arsenals I suspect, take your pick (Cazorla probably).

Any news about Pieters' injury? I'm planning to bring him in for F.Luis for the next 4 GW's. If not I'll get Tomkins for that place (Already got Adrian so I really don't wanna risk on double WH deffence but West Ham plays strong against Chelsea and they have 4 London games in a row, so there is no traveling issues). Appreciating any help on this case, thanks! 🙂

Dionatan Teixeira was involved for the last 5 mins last week, but didn't saw that game, so can he play on the left wing-back role if Pieters is sidelined?

    Aguero - Giroud

    Myhill - Ameobi - Hazard - Kane

I'm waiting until this weekend, if he doesn't play then it's PVA > Rose for DGW

F'k knows what I'm doing in Midfield.

Let's hope for a big guns injury or red card to make the ditching easy.

Same here, may even end up only playing 9 if he is dropped again but seems a bit knee jerky at the moment.

People are just panicking because Sunderland got a clean sheet with him on the bench.

If he's recalled then he scores 1 point IMO. If he comes on as a sub then he also receives 1 point. Either way he's not gonna light up my gameweek.

This winter World Cup will bring up an interesting clash of cash, can't see top euro teams happy about releasing players mid season in the numbers it will result in. So if all the top euro clubs take a collective stance and say they aren't playing ball and releasing their players then there could be no World Cup .

    Was* PVA Kos Hutton

    Ozil ADM Mane Ibe

    Giroud Aguero

    Bench: Terry*, Haz*, Kane*

    *Not playing

Worth me taking a -4 on getting Was out for Dawson (WBA) or Bertrand?

Got 2 FT's and need to get rid of Wisdom to be able to play a full XI this week.

    Rest of the defense currently:

    Krul
    Fonte Kompany Bellerin (Terry)

    Who would you suggest?

Thinking maybe Haidara, Vollscheid or Naughton.
