Arsenal and Man City have this afternoon agreed a fee for the transfer of Samir Nasri. The Frenchman is due to arrive in Manchester later today for a medical and the deal, believed to be in the region of £20m, can be expected to go through imminently. Great news for City, then, but from a Fantasy manager’s point of view, does this merely muddy the waters when eyeing up Roberto Mancini’s men?

A Man City Midfield Perspective
Prior to the season kicking off, Mancini went on record as saying his outfit must score more goals if they are to stand a chance of picking up the title. So far, the team’s play has been refreshingly open and it appears the City boss is determined to shed the negative, mainly defensive take on a 4-2-3-1 formation last season.

Seven goals in their opening two games and Mancini has now added a 4-4-2 formation to his side’s repertoire. David Silva, as Mark mentioned earlier, has been outstanding in his opening two games and has looked the strongest City midfield option available so far. Yaya Toure’s performance at home to Swansea –he had 9 shots at goal- had perhaps suggested an alternative to Silva but the very real possibility of a 4-4-2 coming into play would see him drop deeper and resultantly lessen his Fantasy potential. The limited game time of both Adam Johnson and James Milner looks likely to suffer still, though the latter’s ability to play centrally may allow him more minutes.

Nasri’s adaptability will help. Although he’s able to play anywhere in the attacking midfield three, he is more likely to find a place on City’s left wing- Mancini’s use of the left-footed Silva as an inverted winger from the right is testament to that, though Silva’s role as the chief creator, the one to drop deep and link play, still looks assured; Mancini is too conservative to give two of his first XI license to act as playmakers.

Though it’s impossible to predict just how important Nasri’s role in the City first XI may prove to be, this brilliant article by Simon Kuper on the increased importance of football and statistics is revealing. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.â€

A look at our Members area reveals just how strong Nasri is in that respect. He was rated seventh for successful passes in the opposition half last season- Toure and Silva, City’s top two, were eighth and ninth, despite both playing five games more. If City are to back up Mancini’s demands of attacking football, Nasri’s contribution looks key, then, though with the club also participating in the Champions League, it’s too early to take a punt, with Silva still likely to be the most assured Fantasy choice in City’s midfield until time make matters more apparent.

An Arsenal Midfield Perspective
At present, the Nasri move certainly nails down Gervinho’s place on the Arsenal left. Andrei Arshavin continues to look a shadow of his former self and while Gervinho is a more attack-minded presence than Nasri, he is still as creative- the Ivorian assisted 10 goals last season as well as scoring 15 for Lille. The problem is, in most Fantasy games, including the FPL, Gervinho is classified as a forward.

With Cesc Fabregas gone and already scoring goals for Barcelona, there are slim pickings available in the Arsenal midfield from a Fantasy point a view- a rare thing, indeed. Aaron Ramsey may yet cement his place in Arsene Wenger’s first XI and, at 6.5, is undoubtedly a potential bargain if this proves to be the case, while Theo Walcott’s season has already been blighted by injury- the winger lacks consistency and has a tendency to be one of the most frustrating Fantasy options around.

The Gunners look bereft of all confidence right now and it will be galling for Wenger that the only player who looked likely to make things happen against Liverpool on Saturday was Nasri. The Arsenal boss has plenty cash to splash, then; these next eight days before the end of August will hopefully bring us one or two more Emirates options worthy of our Fantasy consideration.

I dont think Nasri is moving for Money. Eto'o is though. 20miilion per season. C.Ronaldo earns 12million per season.

Hope he enjoys getting racially abused!

Surely you're not naive enough to think its about winning trophies. £220k per week ~ £10m a season. Money talks. Arsenal could only afford to offer him £120kpw max.

Surely you can see that going to City is a step up in his footballing career now. One clubs falling from the top 4 in the league, whilst the other one is challenging for League and domestic honours and will be serious contenders for Europe next year, if not this year.

Moving from Arsenal to City isn't a step up. Moving to Barca or Real Madrid would be a step up. It's all about money. Saying that, if someone offered to double my wages i wouldn't say no. It's a job after all.

It's a step up AP, not a huge one but this season it is. One or two injuries, he doesn't want to have to play out of position and leaving (at this point in his career) Rosicky, a scrub centrally. There have been all these little snubs (i'm sure he would think) towards him. He is essentially just a rat jumping a ship taking on water, he lost faith.

Of course I can see that. But I think you're placing far too much emphasis on Nasri's desire to win things. It's not like he's going from Blackburn to City or something. He's all about the money. They all are, just look at Eto'o, look at Beckham.

But lets not forget, people have said Arsenal wiill drop out of the top4 every year for at least 4. And it never happens.

If only players like Nasri would show some commitment then Wenger could build a successful team, but they don't they just jump ship. (see adebayor, toure, hleb, flamini, sort of clichy)

Demi its a weak argument by fans to cover a player wanting a move the a better club.

ie defensive minded psychology with fans unwilling to accept Arsenal arent in a great position currently

He moved primarily for the chance to win things. The money plays a smaller role. Not every player moving to city is motivated by Money David Brent.

They finished above Arsenal last year. Its not a case of 2008 with them mid table and offering Kaka loads just to get him there.

surely you don't believe that they couldn't pay that do you? Thank the overprice Brit players for the inflation. Besides, the 49% Arsenal's PL win percentage with Samir Nasri starting is well below the 62% win rate for the Gunners w/o. Sometimes you should just let players go. Those two will be crocked at least 2-3 times a season each. I just fear that Arsene is a procrastinator.

I think its a great bit of business for Arsenal, he (nasri) could have sat in a huff for 1 year and then left on a free costing them 20 million big ones, the Fabregas money is great too, no doubt the cunning old fox will use it wisely and Arsenal will be back up there ,

He's moving to a better club, with better prospects and a better chance of winning trophies. He missed out on the World Cup and it hurt him, he won't want to miss out on the Euros. Looking around at the Arsenal team, he'll shine more playing for City. He's also probably hurt by the fans chants directed at him and the abuse on twitter. Fans can be fickle.

And this is coming from an Arsenal Fan.

Again. Naivety. The fans only started getting on his back when he stalled on contract offers for months and unsettled the whole club. (Arsenal were effectively stuck with him all summer, knowing he wanted to leave, but with nobody coming in to buy him.)

By better club, you mean, richer club, not long ago City were playing in division one remember, and have never played champions league football.

Of course he has a better chance to win things at City, because players like him will up an leave a club like Arsenal at the first sign of a £10m contract.

1 player who is 30 years old and has won everything he can in every league he can -and has come from a very very poor background (probably still despite the millions in the bank driven by need to secure his future like he was as a kid) is moving to secure his and his families future.

Yes lets make Eto the barometer for every player. Every player is after money.

And sure isnt every player also extremely loyal to their club ?- Maldini MILAN NEVER MOVED.......see how silly generalizations are.

How are you not getting this. You cant classify everything into to money motivated factors

Some do move for this, most dont.

Maybe Pastore thought moving to live in Paris from a small team in Italy to be paid well and be joined by many other top pros to try and win a League and enter Champions league a good prospect.

this is really simple. People might not opt for a better paying job due to a number of reasons, family ties, location, risk factor etc etc but those who do, "mostly" do it for the money. I dont think football players are any different in that regard. yes, there are a few exceptions to the rule, but for every footballer you name who didn't or doesn't you could name hundreds who do/did.

Yes, but you're being obtuse in thinking that supporting cast wasn't a factor in not wanting to come back. Moves should have been made. Rosicky...again...? Chamakh? Come on man stop wasting everyone's time with the $$$ argument, it's not based in real world football day to day. There are reasons that no matter how angry the majority of the arsenal fans were they couldn't truely put their heart into booing Nasri. They share his frustration. What professional organization leaves it to 8 days left. There was a reason he let it linger this long. If it was money why even play that final game? Word was after last season he gave the word get better players or else. I'm sure there are players currently on their squad he didn't want to play with anymore.

No because you've missed my point. I'm not saying he's not moved for the money, I'm saying he's moved for the money PLUS the prospect of being more successful for a team that seems to be going places.

Everything in life is not black and white, players make the choice to move on more than one factor.

most players do move for the extra money. fabregas is an exception to the rule that you've picked up on to try to validate a point. Most players who take a wage drop do it as they have no other option. If you look at the bigger picture what he said is maybe not gramatically correct but the point he is making is.

Have to say I agree with Brent, do you really think if City had made their move but only on his current Arsenal terms, he would have left. Of course he wouldnt, he went for more money. Its naive to think otherwise.

When exactly do you think it was City made "their move". You're pretty naive to think that it works that way. There are rules to this game. And the team ALWAYS reserves the right to keep the negotiation open as long as they like and court players they rate higher.

Only way DavidBrents argument holds water is if we pretend that from last year to right now that Arsenal and Man City are on the same course as teams, and with personnel decisions, hell in his world Clichy and Nasri should have signed the same day...

The paradigm is a bit different with Baseball and Basketball, the sheer number of games dictate the sheer amount of butts in seats with multiplied ticket returns. American Football and EPL are more of a closer fit but American Football plays way less games and makes more money because of the sheer numbers in the US as opposed to the UK. If the FA and EPL would just lower broadcast rights for a few years outside of the UK, they could demand more on Ad revenues, and at the same time get the natives (and cable companies) hoooked on the crack. FSC is really doing that now, it seems someone smart came up to them and let them know this. The problem for us US viewers is they picked a mid-level sponsored network. HBO needs a dedicated Sports arm, that has the power to pressure cable vendors to put them or their 1 or 2 other sister channels (ie; see ESPN)on their non-premium roster. It is perfect for any cable company as no one has a reason to be watching b/t 7am-10:30am EST. It would be a bonanza.

Oh yeah, it would be a bonanza because you would command peak hour ad pricing at traditionally the 2nd cheapest ad buy hours (7am-10:30am EST...even worse/better for West coasters). Imagine billing ad time @ 7am-10:30am EST at at least 50% of superbowl ad buy pricing?

It means he plays like Judy Dench, apparently she's a wizard with a ball, at some celebrity match she nutmegged Zidane twice before laying off to Delia Smith and then bicycle kicked the return one-two into the top corner leaving Van Der Sar nailed to the spot. It was a thing of glory to witness.

out - fabregas, nasri, clichy, eboue

That's a shame. We'll see whether I get proven right or not. They were without a good striker for the whole of last season and managed 5th. Imagine what one goalscorer would change about the team.

      Fair play Henry.

Perhaps in your next blog we could have some more in-depth analysis of a single team or a match. It just seemed a lot of your predictions contained a few vague generalisations and the content was a bit unoriginal. I would like to see more well formed opinions.

Also you should try to tell us something new or look at things from a different angle, this is what the best blogs do.

Good to see you've put your neck on the line anyhow. Best of luck.

Imo, you need a Jarvis/Brunt/Larsson more than you need Nani - and keep N'Zogbia.

If Snoods were still "legal" in football then City might well have renamed themselves "Snood FC" after buying Nasri.

You cant say Nasri is moving to win silverware because its not guaranteed any more than if he stayed at Arsenal. Do city have a better chance than Arsenal to win silverware ? Possibly, but also possibly not. Arsenal were very very close to the Champions League Final last year whereas City won the FA cup. Both clubs have high ambitions no doubt but I would assume that money had a lot to do with Nasri moving, I doubt very much he would have been shouting for a move to City if he had to take a wage cut to get there.

Nasri wages at Arsenal were similar to midtable clubs offers for midtable teams.

He had a right to ask for more being in the PFA team of the year.

How can Arsenal possible have a similar chance with City , Arsenal lose Fabregas, Nasri , Clichy and City buy Ageuro and have Dzeko and Silva finding their feet now. They are streets ahead of Arsenal currently and before all this happened they finished ahead of Arsenal.

Arsenal were not close to the final last year. Barca hammered them in every facet bar the scoreline. Lets not do this again.

its the scoreline that ultimately matters, they were a bendtner miss away from the final, thats how close they were. all the flair counts not one bit unless you plank the ball in the net. ffs you're hard work at times.

The only question to answer is: would he had joined City if they hadnt offered him more money?

    Vorm, (Given)
Bosingwa (vc), Baines Enrique, (Brown, Richards)
    N’Zog, Silva, Sinclair, Moses (Hoolahan)
    Torres, Bent, (c), Saha

Save my transfer or make a change (maybe get in Brunt for Moses or Hoolahan or get in Fletcher for Saha)? Subs and captain choice decent?

    Cheers!

why don’t you like him as captain, he scored 12 points last gamesweek and tends to score well, especially against weaker teams and he’s at home against wolves!?
