Arsenal and Man City have this afternoon agreed a fee for the transfer of Samir Nasri. The Frenchman is due to arrive in Manchester later today for a medical and the deal, believed to be in the region of £20m, can be expected to go through imminently. Great news for City, then, but from a Fantasy manager’s point of view, does this merely muddy the waters when eyeing up Roberto Mancini’s men?

A Man City Midfield Perspective
Prior to the season kicking off, Mancini went on record as saying his outfit must score more goals if they are to stand a chance of picking up the title. So far, the team’s play has been refreshingly open and it appears the City boss is determined to shed the negative, mainly defensive take on a 4-2-3-1 formation last season.

Seven goals in their opening two games and Mancini has now added a 4-4-2 formation to his side’s repertoire. David Silva, as Mark mentioned earlier, has been outstanding in his opening two games and has looked the strongest City midfield option available so far. Yaya Toure’s performance at home to Swansea –he had 9 shots at goal- had perhaps suggested an alternative to Silva but the very real possibility of a 4-4-2 coming into play would see him drop deeper and resultantly lessen his Fantasy potential. The limited game time of both Adam Johnson and James Milner looks likely to suffer still, though the latter’s ability to play centrally may allow him more minutes.

Nasri’s adaptability will help. Although he’s able to play anywhere in the attacking midfield three, he is more likely to find a place on City’s left wing- Mancini’s use of the left-footed Silva as an inverted winger from the right is testament to that, though Silva’s role as the chief creator, the one to drop deep and link play, still looks assured; Mancini is too conservative to give two of his first XI license to act as playmakers.

Though it’s impossible to predict just how important Nasri’s role in the City first XI may prove to be, this brilliant article by Simon Kuper on the increased importance of football and statistics is revealing. Kuper paid a visit to Man City’s training ground and found that, just like Fantasy managers, the club pay a great deal of attention to player statistics. Gavin Fleig, City’s head of performance analysis, explained the line of thinking:

“The top four teams consistently have a higher percentage of pass completion in the final third of the pitch. Since the recruitment of Carlos Tévez, David Silva, Adam Johnson and Yaya Touré to our football team, in the last six months alone, our ability to keep the ball in the final third has grown by 7.7 per cent.â€

A look at our Members area reveals just how strong Nasri is in that respect. He was rated seventh for successful passes in the opposition half last season- Toure and Silva, City’s top two, were eighth and ninth, despite both playing five games more. If City are to back up Mancini’s demands of attacking football, Nasri’s contribution looks key, then, though with the club also participating in the Champions League, it’s too early to take a punt, with Silva still likely to be the most assured Fantasy choice in City’s midfield until time make matters more apparent.

An Arsenal Midfield Perspective
At present, the Nasri move certainly nails down Gervinho’s place on the Arsenal left. Andrei Arshavin continues to look a shadow of his former self and while Gervinho is a more attack-minded presence than Nasri, he is still as creative- the Ivorian assisted 10 goals last season as well as scoring 15 for Lille. The problem is, in most Fantasy games, including the FPL, Gervinho is classified as a forward.

With Cesc Fabregas gone and already scoring goals for Barcelona, there are slim pickings available in the Arsenal midfield from a Fantasy point a view- a rare thing, indeed. Aaron Ramsey may yet cement his place in Arsene Wenger’s first XI and, at 6.5, is undoubtedly a potential bargain if this proves to be the case, while Theo Walcott’s season has already been blighted by injury- the winger lacks consistency and has a tendency to be one of the most frustrating Fantasy options around.

The Gunners look bereft of all confidence right now and it will be galling for Wenger that the only player who looked likely to make things happen against Liverpool on Saturday was Nasri. The Arsenal boss has plenty cash to splash, then; these next eight days before the end of August will hopefully bring us one or two more Emirates options worthy of our Fantasy consideration.

wildcard or to not wildcard? my team felt pretty solid until moses got injured and saha (a punt) isn't matchfit...now I'm wondering whether to jump onto the wildcard wagon in line with the price changes, here's my team, already used my 1 transfer. What do you think is my best move?

    given (vorm)

baines bosingwa collins (de laet lopez)

    silva moses(inj) nzogbia sessagnon (dyer)

suarez rooney (saha- not match fit)

I wouldn't personally. I have wildcarded but that's because I made a stupid gamble for GW2 and properly stitched myself up.

Moses could play so keep in the 11 and he can be auto-subbed if not. If you're worried about Saha, how about going for Shane Long of WBA? Price rise imminent and looks decent enough with some friendly fixtures coming up.

Sorry, didn't read the bit about already making a transfer. Playing Dyer isn't a bad shout, given his points so far. Do I think Saha will play? Yes, but for how many minutes I don't know.

Either way using the wildcard now would be a waste for you. I'd rather cost myself 4 points if I had to make 2 changes but I don't think you need to. (I had to make loads so I used it!)

Dyer picked up all the BP's last week so might get you more than 2. Plus he looked to be making some good, incisive runs into the area so assists and goals not out of the equation.

          He'll be starting for me.

Because I have lost faith that Drogba will get a start (although he should do), A Cole was only there until I was more sure of Chelsea back 4 (I never pay a lot for defenders), Everton are poor starters yet I failed to listen to what I already knew, Carroll swapped for Suarez, Rooney in, Bent in, Nani back in, Kompany out for Richards, Enrique in.....

I was hoping on igniting the money making machine. Accruing value has always helped me get an edge. I'm still waiting mind you!

There are no hard and fast rules about price changes. If a player really used their WC to make a bit of extra cash, then it's their fault that they a) didn't wait for thresholds to be confirmed, b) played it on a Monday night, c) didn't play it during an international break.

If I was you I'd save my transfer, will give a little more tome for teams to settle and the real prospects to emerge, plus the two transfers will be really useful

not really, it depends on how the games go in any given week, ie 60 was a good score last week, other weeks it could be pretty mediocre depending on who scores and how many goals are scored. too many variables to have a rigid threshold if you know what i mean

Warnock virtually playing reserves as not interested in cup tournaments.

Only playing Taarabt and Bothroyd because they need the run out especially after having virus on weekend.

Everyone I know who has an HTC hates it. Two people I work with have the Galaxy S (MK 1?) and they both love it. I was thinking about getting the Galaxy Ace as it's on contract with o2 for 10.50 a month which is quite cheap.

I'm in a very tricky situation so I'd be extremely grateful for any advice. Basically, despite all the RMTs I read over the summer, I followed a completely different policy. My team is as follows:
    1. 5 in bank

    Vorm
    Boswinga Cole Richards Kompany Baines
    Sess Brunt Walters
    Aguero Rooney

    Schwarzer Moses Dyer Holt

    In short, my question is:
    Holt + A Cole
    or
Suarez + Enrique and -4 points. I would wait (Cole has Norwich, International break etc.), but it's the darn price rises of Suarez and Enrique.
I would go without Bent despite new bonus system (too unpredictable to make cappo) and Silva who, whilst being a brilliant player, I don't think will continue his fantastic scoring rate IMHO. Apologies for the long post from a lurker and I'd be very grateful for any responses....

Not in terms of personnel, but the strategy of playing a strong 5 at the back every week wasn't popular (apologies for being patronising, but a forwards goal is the equivalent of a clean sheet - my team is obviously imbalanced but there is little value in mf this season). I feel if I had Suarez I'd have an excellent front 3, all cappo options (actually captained Baines this GW).

ah yes, sorry I hadnt looked that closely. strong back four. interesting to see how that pans out.

general consensus in past seasons has been 1 maybe 2 good defs then very cheap and cheap keepers.

capning defs usually ends in tears

I don't think you have too much of a problem. For me, in this GW you can't afford to play all 3 of those away from home, especially with Spurs having something to prove after Harry no doubt gave them a stern word or 2 last night.

If Moses is fit he's a good shout to play and so is Dyer. Both at home and with potential to score/assist and pick up BP's.

Maybe drop one of Richards/Kompany and Walters? Saves you taking a hit and then you can think about making 2 free during the int'l break.

Since we have no idea what's happening with price changes atm I'd be very slow to take a points hit on that basis. Those are my thoughts anyway.

Cheers Back on the Horse and Westonwaters. It's very tricky, if it wasn't for captaincies I think a strong defence would really pay dividends. I think I should have shown more restraint, but at least I don't feel compelled to wildcard and in the long term I think I will be rewarded. All my defenders have attacking potential (aside from Kompany, who is nailed on abd should get BPs). Much to ponder concerning this addictive game. I also vowed to minimise 4 point hits and chasing points this season. Struggling who to bench, too....

Anyone seen some the things Lukaku has said? He seems like a nice kid but he certainly does not lack confidence, its not 'cockiness' imo but he really does fancy himself. He looks like if he works hard enough, he could be world class which is great. I think if we sign Modric this will have been one of our best ever transfer window, if not the best.

Yeah, but watching manu last night and seeing how Fergie has developed good young players and kept a brilliant team mix year after year, makes me think Chelsea need to change its MO.

I guess we are now seeing the effect of the period when Abro took over and just bought players in. I think Chels anounced a strategy to develpo youth a few seasons back and obv it takes a while to take effect, but surely that was obvious anyway.

At least Wenger has been trying to do it all these years - he jsut has managed the age mix quite right

Had a bit of a shocker this last GW, so was wondering if you guys could impart some wisdom in ways to pimp my team over the next couple of weeks!

    This is my squad:

    Given/Ruddy
    Enrique/De Laet/Shawcross/Jagielka/Kompany
    Y Toure/Bale/Young/Moses/Ferguson
    Suarez/Torres/Bent

    Nothing left in the bank...

Unlike some people on here, I'm not looking to wildcard just yet... my first thought is to give Torres one more week, and if he doesn't sort his life out, bring in either Rooney or Hernandez (if fully fit). For that though, I'd need to find 1m from somewhere; my thoughts here would be to swap Toure for a cheaper midfielder, but it's just a question of who.

Any help would be much appreciated!
