With another international break now upon us, we take a look at the fall-out from the weekendโ€™s matches. Sergio Agueroโ€™s form, Juan Mataโ€™s importance to United, Arsene Wengerโ€™s midfield and Villa’s lack of consistency are all amongst this eveningโ€™s topics.

Sherwoodโ€™s Villa remain a work in progress…
A home clash with Swansea seemed the perfect time for Villaโ€™s main assets to place themselves in the shop window ahead of the double Gameweek. Unfortunately for Tim Sherwood and Fantasy managers alike, the Midlands side failed to maintain the momentum that harvested three successive wins prior to the weekend as they slumped to a disappointing 1-0 loss. With Christian Benteke set to be assessed after limping off with a hip problem, investment in Villaโ€™s squad remains a risky tactic as they struggle to steer clear of the relegation battle.

Agueroโ€™s slipping closer to the exit door…
Up against ten-man West Brom for 89 minutes on Saturday, the Argentine was handed the perfect chance to get back amongst the points at the Etihad. Whilst David Silva dazzled and Wilfried Bony staked a claim for a regular role by opening his City account, Aguero failed to score for the eighth time in ten appearances since returning from injury. With just eight Gameweeks remaining โ€“ and at least three of them doubles โ€“ Agueroโ€™s place in our 15-man squads looks increasingly under threat. At a time when fellow big hitters Diego Costa and Daniel Sturridge both delivered again, and with in-form pair Harry Kane and Olivier Giroud racking up the goals, Aguero is looking the fall guy for many โ€“ over 33,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers have transferred him out since the weekend, with his price now dropping to 12.8; just 2.0 lessย than Kane and Giroud combined.

…but Costa’s fragility might just delay matters…
Forced off on 75 minutes with a recurrence of his hamstring injury away to Hull, the Blues frontman now enters another international break with question marks hanging over his availability. Costaโ€™s goal and assist at the KC continued his return to form, and with a double just around the corner, heโ€™s earmarked by many as the obvious Aguero replacement. With Jose Mourinho casting doubts over his availability to face Stoke, though, some may be prepared to wait on Costa in the short-term, despite the fact that the striker has missed only two league outings through injury so far. Thereโ€™s also the Suspension Tightrope to consider here โ€“ Costa (who has already missed four matches due to bans) is currently on eight yellows and has to avoid two more in the next couple of Gameweeks before the limit is extended from ten to 15 bookings. Essentially, if he is cautioned in each of the next two Gameweeks, Costa would then serve a two-match ban against United and Arsenal. Someone as canny as Mourinho will be more than aware of this and thereโ€™s a possibility he could turn to Loic Remy against Stoke or QPR to ensure Costa remains free of both injury and suspension.

Mata has played his way into Van Gaalโ€™s XI…
Louis van Gaalโ€™s decision to keep faith in the Spaniard and hand suspension-free Angel Di Maria a place on the bench proved pivotal as United clinched a vital win at Anfield. Mataโ€™s brace served a reminder of the talents that produced 162 and 212 points in his two seasons at the Bridge and saw him move past Di Maria as the highest scoring United midfielder this season โ€“ย despite starting just two of the last nine league matches. Di Mariaโ€™s assist off the bench suggests he could be set to oust Ashley Young from the XI next time out, but as United attempt to chase down second spot, it seems that Mata has finally convinced his manager heโ€™s worthy of a regular role.

Long deserves more pitch time…
Handed a second consecutive start through the middle as Ronald Koeman rolled out a 4-2-2-2 to accommodate Graziano Pelle up front, the Republic of Ireland international opened the scoring in the Saintsโ€™ 2-0 win over Burnley. Whilst Pelle retained a central role after the break, Long โ€“ along with Sadio Mane โ€“ย was shuffled onto the flanks as Koeman switched to a 4-2-3-1. The Italian yet again failed to score and has now fired 34 unsuccessful attempts from Gameweek 18 onwards โ€“ given that the Saints face five of the bottom seven in the next seven rounds of fixtures, Longโ€™s pace and eye for goal looks crucial if they are to maintain their bid for a top-four finish.

Murray warrants our attention…
With more room for manoeuvre in our five-man midfields, the likes of Wilfried Zaha, Jason Puncheon and Yannick Bolasie have overshadowed Glenn Murray as a Fantasy prospect in recent weeks. Zahaโ€™s second successive strike in a 2-1 win at Stoke hogged the headlines as he continues his return to form under Alan Pardew, yet it was Murray โ€“ with a goal, assist and maximum bonus โ€“ who was the Eaglesโ€™ chief protagonist at the Britannia. The 5.1-priced striker has now racked up four goals and an assist in his last four yet is owned by just 0.1% of managers โ€“ whilst double Gameweek targets will understandably take priority, clashes against Sunderland, West Brom and Hull in the next four give Murray the chance to continue his own renaissance.

Martinezโ€™ switch to 4-4-2 is paying off…
The Everton managerโ€™s recent change of tactics has sparked a turnaround in fortunes and eased worries of a relegation battle. Martinezโ€™ move to a 4-4-2 set-up, with Romelu Lukaku partnered by Arouna Kone up top, has earned the Merseysiders back-to-back victories for the first time since Gameweeks 8 and 9 and moved the Toffees nine points clear of the drop zone. The new system seems to be getting the best out of their key men โ€“ Lukaku registered a season-high score against the Magpies last week, whilst Seamus Coleman’s 13-point haul at Loftus Road yesterday mirrored his best for the campaign. With five home clashes allied with trips to Swansea, Villa and West Ham in the final eight Gameweeks, Martinezโ€™ men are starting to suggest they could be set for a strong finish to the campaign.

Sterlingโ€™s wasted on the right…
The Liverpool youngsterโ€™s Fantasy fortunes continue to look bleak due to a move to the right wing-back berth. Brendan Rodgers ignored the many calls for Sterling to be reintroduced to the centre at the expense of Daniel Sturridge for yesterdayโ€™s visit of United and watched on as the midfielder turned in an anonymous display out wide. Whilst Sturridge has four goals and three assists in eight appearances since returning from injury, Sterling has managed just two attempts on goal in the last three Gameweeks since Rodgersโ€™ switch โ€“ย with a trip to Arsenal potentially preceding a Gameweek 33 blank (if the Reds progress past Blackburn in the cup), Sterlingโ€™s season is in danger of grinding to an abrupt halt.

Ramseyโ€™s form allows Wenger to tinker…
Last weekโ€™s 3-0 win over West Ham saw Santi Cazorla drop out of the starting XI as Arsene Wengerโ€™s decision to start the Welshman in his place was vindicated with a goal and assist. Ramseyโ€™s midweek strike in Monaco continued his fine form and persuaded Wenger to rest Mesut Ozil this time out โ€“ the German had a โ€œslight illnessโ€ against the Magpies as Olivier Giroud bagged a brace in the 2-1 win. With the FA Cup also to consider, thereโ€™d be no real surprise if Alexis Sanchez โ€“ย with one goal in seven โ€“ is next in line for a day off, given that Wenger has conceded he is โ€œtemptedโ€ to rest him. With home clashes against Liverpool and Chelsea in the next four, in addition to a blank Gameweek 33, many owners have already had enough โ€“ over 17,000 have sold on the misfiring Chilean, more than any other midfielder in the Gameweek.

Pearsonโ€™s playing havoc with our double Gameweek 34 plans…
When Leicesterโ€™s double Gameweek 34 was confirmed a few weeks back, Jeffrey Schlupp and Riyad Mahrez looked the stand-out candidates as nailed-on options out wide. Over the past two matches, though, Nigel Pearsonโ€™s line-ups have quickly cast doubts over the pairโ€™s potential โ€“ while Schlupp has been shifted to left wing-back, Mahrez warmed the bench in the 4-3 loss at Tottenham and was handed a brief 15-minute cameo. With David Nugent and Jamie Vardy serving up a goal and assist apiece at the Lane, the Foxes manager has plenty to ponder as he look to go on the offensive and take advantage of six home fixtures in the remaining nine matches.

There’s a bargain to be had between the posts…
We pondered the merits of West Brom’s Boaz Myhill but came out of the Gameweek with another budget option to consider. With Frazer Forster crocked in Southampton’s 2-0 win over Burnley, suddenly Kelvin Davis joins Myhill in the reckoning, offering two good reasons to carry out surgery on our FPL keeper spots. Myhill looks certain to be the Baggies’ custodian for the season run-in, enjoying home encounters with the bottom two โ€“ QPR and Leicester โ€“ย next. Priced at 4.4, Davis could be playing behind a back-four who registered their fourteenth clean sheet at the weekend, with the likes of Villa, Hull, Sunderland, Stoke and Leicester still to play. We wait on Forster’s prognosis but if Ronald Koeman’s pessimism proves correct, many of us will be eyeing up a change in nets.

Strengthen the defence this week and then Kun and Austin to Costa and Giroud next if you're feeling conservative.

Consider Mata or Rooney if you're feeling punty

Anyways. I meant to post this at the top of this page so everyone has a chance to see the light

    Time to be honest, FFS:
The only time it was ever "ballsy" or "gutsy" or "brave" or "bold" or "risky" to drop Sanchez, was back in January when he was injured in non-league competition when he should not have been playing.

You hemmed, you hawed, you decided to keep him. He's returned one goal and is now a shade of his first-half-season self.

Sell him now and stop talking about it. Your season ends in 8 gameweeks, so tell yourself to be "brave" or whatever and get on with it.

Sanchez out is simply a no brainer right now. Agreed, the best thing you could have done was not buy him at all when he returned 2 months ago

Aguero out on the other hand is still gutsy in my opinion. Although much less so than 2 weeks ago.

And what? That means they are a bad pick for next week?
If the ball bounced differently last week Aguero could have easily had double figure hall.
He hit the post and Myhills face from a yard.
Kane gets the most fortunate hat trick ever

Sorry just wanted to know where you are coming from. So you're suggesting that both are undroppable and it would be very risky to drop either?

I may have been exaggerating. I guess its easy to suggest that Sanchez is much easier to drop than Aguero, which is more to the point. There is certainly merit to keeping but I'd err on the side of suggesting its somewhat against the grain to keep Sanchez now.

                      The blank is a factor.
You only as good as your last game is a factor
No great need for money is a factor on the flip side.
He's still more capable of getting a 15 pt haul than most. Were he to do that next week,,,, a lot of people quickly change the tune

Liverpool this week is a tough game, then there is the threat of finally getting a rest (Burnley?). Blank after that and suddenly is it really worth keeping an 11m dud on your team? I think if you can afford a FT Sanchez has to go. If you can't afford a FT because of problems elsewhere then keep.

I can't look at him and ever see a dud. I accept his recent returns are not what I'd like them to be, but I have also seen what they could have been and have been.
I've looked at replacements. No one stands out head and shoulders above him.

We all know he needs to go, the problem is the lack of stand out alternatives if you already have Hazard, Silva and Eriksen.

I don't prioritise one thing over any other, rank is a factor but it's not the only thing. I can look at your GW history and see where you've finished in the past to asses if it's just a bad season.

I also set different criteria. I've done a lot of these and have often been on the same teams as people more than once, so I often look to recruit thise people as I know what I'm getting.

So in my case, this is the first season I've been this interested in FPL, and my other seasons were just for fun where I was terrible. But since there seems to be several empty spots on different teams, do you think I have a chance?

My current rank is 72 k, and my best rank of this season is 48 k.

He'd scored well in the two league matches since Sherwood took over.

Well that's the problem. If I was hell bent on selling Aguero last week it should've been for Rooney or Costa. This was always the week to bring Tekkers in if having a punt.

Not sure man. To me Tekkers is only useful because of the DGW. Would always have Aguero over Tekkers in a 1 v 1. Costa on the other hand would have been a good option considering he doesn't have a blank and has a DGW.

The plan was to downgrade to get Ivan. Then downgrade a mid and get Costa or Rooney for him in two weeks. Was always too short term and destined to fail. I'm now .1m short of Rooney.

Walcott to a cheapie mid to free up some cash (maybe Phillips or Delph).
              Benteke to Rooney.
Giroud to Costa in GW 32 or 33.

I know it's a -4 but worth it I think. I have been looking at Rooney's goalscoring record. He has scored more goals against Villa than against any other team. He also has a very good record against City.

I may be in the same situation if Costa is unfit. In which case I'll do Costa to Rooney for a hit.

It's a no brainer. But it still makes me sick to my stomach.

Well I don't know. He actually was injured, how seriously is not yet clear. But I suspect he'll miss the Stoke game.

I'm sick about doing Rooney to Costa instead of Aguero to Costa. Even though I came out better last weekend. I hate how my team has drifted into quite a template arrangement after the Spurs DGW. Most of the differentials I had have been caught up with. Really I want Rooney, Costa (if fit) and Kane.

The good thing is I will wildcard in GW 34 and will have a very different looking team then.

Hazard has now scored in 5 of the last 6 away matches - not such a home boy anymore.

With ars/lei in the DGW, there's been a lot of talk about Costa being a necessity for the armband - I can't see past Eden though.

I think looking at home/away records can be very misleading - the sort of patterns we read into to feel like we're making an informed decision, when fixtures and form always play the much bigger role.

Assuming scans and international injuries prove OK. Aguero is going this week for Costa I think they have similar potential and I can always get Aguero back at a later date once Austin's DGW is out of the way. Going to bring in Siggy (for Walters) too as i need better options for GW 33 and he will shore up a week midfield I have this week. I have 2 FT's. What do you think?

    1. Diva
      • 11 Years
      10 years, 10 months ago

I've not given up on Agüero just yet given his underlying stats this week, but my faith has been shaken a little. Costa is a pretty good replacement though.

The Costa move looks solid given the DGW coming up. Not so sure of the second move though. Might be inclined to save the FT. Is walters injured?

Nope but I could do with him this week and GW 33 in particular. He is away to Chelsea and then at home to Southampton. By comparison Swansea play Hull and Leicester

Yeah I'd just be wary of spinning too many wheels with transfers on the same spots in your lineup at this point.

Hey DZ. Any ideas of a good 8.3M midfielder or under for the rest of the season? Getting them in next gameweek. So far I have got Mane or Coutinho shortlisted. Who would you go with?

    Planning on doing:

    Sanchez>8.3M or under
    Austin>Costa

    after the DGW

2FT and £1.5m in the bank. Help me with a plan over the next couple weeks plz, looks like Bellerin gotta go this week and Austin next week after the double. I was looking at Berahino for a 2 week punt before my WC in GW34. but just realised I'd have too many WBA unless I sell!

    Clichy Ivan Bellerin

Nice, still a good pick though fwiw. And as far as I'm concerned, that 3rd/4th spot for the milfs is up in air right now, no de-facto "optimal" 4th mid right now. Now more than before, a lot of it is down to personal preference really, Ozil still has great underlying stats and has been central to nearly every decent chance the Gunner have had as of late. There's no rush to sell IMO.
