Referred to by some as the “Berlin Wall” the mountain of a defender known as Robert Huth may need a new nickname – one to emphasise his attacking abilities rather than (or at least in addition to) his imposing defensive stature. Huth has emerged as Fantasy gold in the first half of the season – 4 goals, 2 assists, 5 Bonus Points and 4 clean sheets in 21 games, adding up to an impressive 76 FPL points.

Prior to his recent suspension for 5 yellow cards, Huth’s score had climbed to 5th highest amongst all defenders. He’s dropped slightly after sitting out a game and a 1-point performance against Man United, but Huth still ranks as the 9th defender overall and ranks 6th amongst all defenders in terms of value (his current 5.3 price translates into 14.3 FPL points per pound) trailing only to Everton’s Seamus Coleman, Sunderland’s Phil Bardsley and Elmohamady and Fulham’s Aaron Hughes and Brede Hangeland.

Stoke have quietly climbed to 10th place after a run that includes 5 wins and 2 draws in their last 10 games. Not surprisingly the Potters’ recent results have been tied to improved defensive performances that bode well for Huth and the rest of Stoke’s defensive players. Needless to say a total of 5 clean sheets on the season is far from impressive, but the more recent statistics show 4 clean sheets in the last 9 games tell a different (and more promising) story. Given the slow start, Stoke will not match last season’s total of 14 shut-outs, but there is every reason to believe that the past two months are more indicative of what we can expect the rest of the way from Tony Pulis’ defence.

There was some sell-off when he hit his suspension, but Huth has seen a deservedly steady flow of “transfers in” over the past two months. He is now owned by 8.5% of FPL teams and has seen his price increase to 5.3. By contrast teammate Ryan Shawcross started the season as the Stoke defender of choice and is still owned by 9.4% despite selling off that has seen his price drop to 4.7. It would be foolish to disregard Shawcross entirely given the price differential hat has developed between them. However, there is no denying that Huth has dominated so far and should continue to be a constant presence in the attacking area on corners, set plays and long throws.

The only reason Huth is not higher up the Watchlist at the moment is a mixed run of fixtures over the next month (BOL, ful, liv, SUN, bir/ars, WBM, whm, NEW). But this schedule provides some prospect for clean sheet returns and Huth’s attacking exploits make him available for Fantasy play even if defensive returns are unlikely. In terms of other considerations, FPL is still not awarding or deducting point for facial hair so that is a non-issue, but Huth does remain the subject of rumors about a potential January transfer. Stoke are saying that they do not need to sell and would seem unlikely to accept a £5m offer that is less than what was paid for Huth in the summer of 2009 but, in any event, a move would likely not hurt Huth’s Fantasy prospects this season even if it did occur.

    Hello

I'm finding it more and more difficult to resist the force of wild card...long post, but if you mind looking my team, any help would be appreciated!

    fos/al habsi
    rafael, skrtl, coleman, djorue, evatt
    fab, nani, vdv, adam, nzog
    tevez, perpa, rvp

    Problems are;
    - strong front 8 - have to bench one every week (prob wrong one)
    - have to get rid of torres before his double gw (actually replacement in my starting 11 would be nzog and he might not lose that many point for torres in that double gw after all (captaining nani)).

didnt make a transfer in gw19 and 20. Used one free saved transfer in gw 21, thought I had another.
Can you only have 1 free saved transfer?
If so very confused by the following from te FAQ.

When playing your wildcard any saved free transfers (plural) will be lost, you will be given just 1 free transfer in the following gameweek.

You should have made a trade in GW20. You lost it in a way. It's that simple. You can only have 1 saved free trade.

That's not 100% right. You can have 2 free trades. You should have 2 frees for GW23 if you didn't trade much in GW22.

"When playing your wildcard any saved free transfers (plural) will be lost, you will be given just 1 free transfer in the following gameweek."

If you don't transfer one GW you get 2 free transfers - a saved one and a new one. If you still make no transfer you take 2 saved free transfers to the following GW and get no new ones.

The wildcard makes you lose those 2 saved free transfers and you get a new one given to you the GW after the wildcard.

If you get them both with 1 or more of VDV/Bale/RVP you better watch out for the DGW 27 as Spurs are away to Sunderland 3 days before going to Italy to play AC Milan and Arsenal play Barca a day later at home.

Then there's the 5th Round of the FA Cup a few days after that and the second game of the DGW the midweek after that.

So you might get really burned and be down to 10 players for 1 of the DGW games if any other players are hurt/rested and lose some captain points.

My plans are to have at least 3, maybe with Djorou too, unsure what games he'd be more likely to miss yet. So I will be open to getting burned a bit. Might swap Nasri for Cahill though by then if the Everton/Birmingham gets rescheduled in around there.

I know, that's why I'm considering using it now. If Gerrard wasn't suspended then I'd keep Nasri this week and probably sell Konchesky for Alcaraz.

Now I have more holes to fill thanks to Stevie G.

So, Camzy, you reckon wildcard now or wait till next week. Other option is take my first points hit in about 2 months and get Fabs and a defender for Konchesky?

Thanks to both of you for advice.

I've been building my team for GW24 for a few weeks now, so I don't think I should make drastic changes just now.

Foley is always going to play so he can always step in as a 3rd defender if Kolarov is dropped.

Fabs repays any 4 pt hit pretty much right away as well, if I decide to take a hit.

Patience and non panic is called for here, I fancy.

I want to hold off on the WC too, but it's still 5 days until the deadline and once RVP and Fabs protection ends they will be going up in price week by week I'm sure, as will other candidates you might want.

The more people wildcarding the worse it will be for the later ones. I'm going to try and hold off a bit longer though.

Cheers tosey. It's just mad that there's nothing in the rules - like when a player will increase or decrease in value (although at least that gets a brief mention - if not the answer). Maybe the protection thing is just a myth?

i cant really get any arsenal players before i wildcard so was very happy when they drew on sat, now hoping ipswich turn them over in the first leg weds so they have to play a few big guns in the 2nd leg

Personally I can only see Wenger resting big name players for WLV and POSSIBLY around the FA Cup replay if he's going to name his best team to play Leeds.

The FA Cup R4 and League Cup games should easily be handled by the reserves...

Someone who knows more about Arsenal / Sunderland I'd love to know...

Elmohamady's long term chance of keeping a starting place when (who?) returns from being injured. He seems to be great, both in FPL terms and out on the pitch but wasn't / still isn't a first team prospect? Also he's no long player out of position at the moment and is now playing in defence?

Djourou... Haven't really seen him but apparently he played fairly well... With Squillaci and Vermerlaen out I guess he's guaranteed starts at the moment but is there any chance of him holding on to one of the positions long term, Wenger seems to be able to put a fair bit of trust in youngsters but... at CB?

look at the tweets, wenger says he may buy a centre half, this shows he isnt 100% happy with djourou starting consistently yet, nice short term option but not long term

put RTG into google and youll get the sunderland forum, im going for sunderland defenders when i wildcard and wont be going for elmohamady, they tend t think hell be a bit part player and most dont rate him that much

tosey's right - although Elmohamady has skill, he's terrible at reading the game, and is often caught out of position ...

Tah, wasn't too sure how to read the Wenger comment. If Squillaci is out for a while it makes sense signing anyone just so you have SOME cover.

Guess I might consider Onouha then for WC and after, we'll see what happens between then and now...

mvtaylor, im going for bramble (solid pick and gets alot of bp's and if hes fit when i wildcard turner as hes a goal threat and 1st choice)

onuoha is a bit expensive for me

Yet strangely the Defenders overall list goes Baines, Vidic, Cole, Elmo in 4th place.

He's had 5 sub 90 min clean sheets, coming off the bench early to pick a couple of them up. A reverse Kolarov if you will. He leads a charmed Fantasy life.

He beats all the odds so far but I won't buy him back.

A Liverpool fan in work says that Gerrard's suspension does not come into effect until after the Blackpool game to allow time for appeal, whether Liverpool actually decide to appeal or not.

    Hope this is not right.

I think even Kenny knows it starts now, despite being out of touch with the rules going by his press conference. So your workmate mustn't have managed anyone for at least 15 years.
