Champions League

Wednesday’s Notes From Europe – Matchday Three

Matchday Three of the UEFA Champions League (UCL) Fantasy Game locked its doors shut for another fortnight yesterday evening. Here’s our round-up of the main highlights from Wednesday night’s eight fixtures:

Ukraine and Russia Ignite

If you’re hot on the twitter button you will undoubtedly have seen Jonathan Wilson (expert on pretty much all European football East of the Rhine) pine over this Eastern Bloc fixture and the highlights we’ve seen certainly back this up.

Shakhtar midfielder Willian returned from an injury picked up in the summer and saw the Zenit goalkeeper only able to paw his curling shot into the top corner after quarter of an hour. Roman Shirokov then snuck in by the last man and goalkeeper to grab an equaliser from virtually on the bye-line for the visitors – his day wasn’t complete though as later on his timid penalty was saved, costing him 2 vital fantasy points.

Just before the break, Luiz Adriano was on hand to turn a shoot instinctively into the bottom corner, similar to Jermain Defoe’s strike in Sunday afternoon’s tie at Newcastle. A calamity at the back for Shakhtar allowed Viktor Fayzulin free on goal to level affairs with a chip, ending the goalscoring at 2-2.

Fernando at the Double

With his domestic ban still carried on into this weekend’s trip to QPR, Fernando Torres used last night’s game against Genk to further suggest a return to form under the guidance of Andre Villas-Boas. The Spaniard grabbed a double in the 5-0 romp over a weakened Belgian side, adding to an early opener from Raul Meireles as Chelsea equalled their biggest ever Champions League win with an eye-catching performance. Goals from Branislav Ivanovic and Salomon Kalou completed the rout, in a match that saw both Juan Mata and Daniel Sturridge given the night off with the game at Loftus Road in mind.

Tedium at the Velodrome

I did not enjoy this game in the slightest. If I could have a time refund I’d be first in the queue. However, from a purely Fantasy Football perspective, this moribund performance from Arsenal and Marseille at least gave the visiting side something to cheer about at the death. Something other than the final whistle, at least.

After missing last weekend’s Premier League fixture with an ever so slightly damaged hamstring, Aaron Ramsey returned with a 15 minute cameo from the bench and scored the solitary goal in a less-than-memorable game. As a result, the Welshman has been added to our FPL Watchlist with the Gunners’ kind run of domestic fixtures in mind. Carl Jenkinson picked up a knee problem in the game and will be monitored ahead of Sunday’s game against Stoke. Marseille have now carried their poor form from Ligue 1 into the Champions League but sit just one point behind the Gunners in second place in Group F.

Barca and AC Get The Job Done

Continuing the slow, inevitable march towards qualification to the knockout stages, both Barcelona and AC Milan notched relatively low scoring (2-0 in both games) victories over much weaker opponents, with all due respect, of Plzen and BATE respectively.

Lionel Messi was his usual magnificent best but only walked away from the game with a single assist despite all of his efforts. Some rather ridiculous quick one touch interplay between the Argentine and his team-mate Andres Iniesta resulted in the first goal while David Villa was on hand to slot home a loose ball after he was upended in the box 10 yards from goal.

Getting AC Milan into first gear was recent Barcelona departee Zlatan Ibrahimovic, when a rebounded ball into the box fell kindly for the big Swede to grab the first striker’s goal for our Watchlist. Not one to be outdone, Kevin-Prince Boateng scored a thunderous strike from outside the box.

All fairly routine but could, and perhaps should, have been more for both of these sides.

Apoel Stay Top With Stalemate

Another draw on Matchday Three sees Group G remain the tightest and most unpredictable of the lot. FC APOEL of Cyprus would likely have been written off by most long before the tournament began and yet, as things stand, after a 1-1 draw away at FC Porto yesterday evening, they find themselves in the plum spot ahead of Portuguese, Russian and Ukrainian champions.

Things looked to be going according to predictions when Hulk rifled in another almighty whallop of a free-kick inside the first quarter of an hour. APOEL’s 4.1m striking bargain Ailton never read the script, though, and grabbed an equaliser just a short while after to keep his side at the top of the group.

Valencia Left Kicking The Dirt – And Themselves

After absolutely dominating the first half of their trip away at the BayArena, Valencia were ultimately left ruing their profligacy in front of goal as Bayer Leverkusen came back from a turgid performance and a goal behind to win the game 2-1. Valencia striker Roberto Soldado this time turned provider as his ball into the box allowed Jonas to give his side the lead from a few yards out.

The visitors then failed to capitalise on the advantage as they continued to spurn chances and not long after the break. Andre Schurrle and Sidney Sam made the Spaniards pay with two early goals in the second half turning the game on its head completely as Leverkusen wound out 2-1 victors and cemented their place in second place in the group at the half-way stage.

German Champions Crumble

Borussia Dortmund may have grabbed themselves a hard earned and much needed victory in the Bundesliga last weekend, but their new adventures in Europe continued down a far rockier road as Olympiakos soundly beat them 3-1.

Jose Holebas, Rafik Djebbour and Francois Modesto scored the goals for the home side with Robert Lewandowski having scored a lovely first half equaliser from a Mario Gotze cross.

Next Matchday’s reverse of this fixture becomes a must win for Dortmund if they stand any realistic chance of making it a step further. Good job We’ll have a Scout Report (see our previous instalments on Porto and Milan/Napoli) on their squad coming up next week.

    Afternoon Gents,

I've been putting some thought into this GB Olympic Squad. The following is probably as I'd personally have it. It's very England-heavy and I imagine there'll be slightly more of a spread in the finished article. What do you think, am I anywhere near?

Bear it in mind, it has to be an 18-man squad where 15 players are born on or after 1st Jan 1989.

    J Butland (E)
    D Cornell (W)

    K Walker (E)
    P Jones (E)
    N Taylor (W)
    +J Terry (E)
    C Cathcart (NI)

    B Bannan (S) Scotland
    G Bale (W)
    A Ramsey (W)
    J Wilshire (E)
    T Walcott (E)
    +D Beckham (E)

    A Carroll (E)
    D Goodwillie (S)
    +W Rooney (E)

I don't think they can completely boycott it, it's at the discretion of the players I believe. Although I know the other home nations have strongly urged their players not to feature.

The team obviously assumes that anyone is available...

Don't think they have, although Wales have said they can't stop the players that want to play from playing. I saw this morning that England have said that anyone who plays in the Euros won't be in the Olympics team as it's right after the Euros, so it'll be a lot lot different to that I'd imagine. Not that I actually give a toss. 😉

Really difficult guesswork this, since the FA has issued its "Euro clause", and that no Scots or Welsh are "allowed" by their FAs. This is my shot at the team

I think Wilshere, Welbeck and Sturridge will feature in the Euros

      Juniors
      GK: Decklan Rudd
DEF: Phil Jones, Smalling, Kyle Walker, Kieran Gibbs, and one more... Caulker maybe?
MID: Albrighton, Tom Cleverley, Rodwell, Henderson, Moses, Bale (he will ignore the WAF)
      FRW: Delfouneso, Connor Wickham

Seniors. With everyone going to the Euros, considering the team, Id take a goalie a, a forward and a team captain
      Ben Foster
      Jermain Defoe
      ... and... dunno... Dawson?

And good news: no Michael Mancienne!

I did Taarabt OUT Eagles IN last night and it feels so good that I really don't even care if Eagles does nothing most of the time, another Jimenez/SEB/Petrov (circa 2010-2011) bites the dust.

    Team for this week:

    Hennessey
    Enrique//Warnock//Bosingwa
    Nani//Eagles//Jarvis//Arteta
    RVP(C)//Rooney//Adebayor

    Vorm//N.Taylor//Dyer//Simpson

1.2m in the bank from the Taarabt move. Nice.

Yup, Arteta OUT Ramsey IN is the move of the week, Arteta is not pulling his weight but having looked at all of the chalkboards and heat maps last night, I am not convinced Arteta and Ramsey play different positions, on average they have the same amount of shots, one plays a little further than the other in some games, but I guess Ramsey has form on his side.

How is Sturridge a weak link? Starting Chelsea striker for 6.5m that allows you to bulk up your midfield.

Your subs would leave you with possibly the worst midfield of anyone serious about the game...

Your weak links are Dyer and Ferguson.

Also start Simpson this weekend over Kompany.

      Arteta -> Ramsey, Ferguson -> a player.

Am I the only one not getting why people are transferring out Rooney?

I get that Man City are good defensively and the match at Old Trafford might be tight, but he's likely to score in this game as any other. After that, Everton are hardly keeping cleanies, and then it's very favourable fixtures after this. He was benched last weekend after an International break but there's no internationals for a while now. He's the most nailed on attacking starter for United and the most likely to score consistently, so to get rid of him for a week or two seems a bit illogical, especially as it might be difficult to get him back in to your team. I know a lot of people are doing Rooney to RVP and RVP is a good transfer but I would personally get them both, which I do have. I'd always take Rooney and RVP over the likes of Aguero and Torres, as there is always a risk of rotation with the latter two. Just saying.

I'm one of those people - doing Rooney and Long for Suarez and Adebayor (already have RvP). My thinking is that the City game could be tight, and Fergie often doesn't play Rooney away at Everton. I'll be getting him back in on my GW11 wildcard, but I'm not exactly happy about selling - just think that Suarez and Ade will outscore Rooney and Long comfortably.

I guess if you have a wildcard to play with then it's not so bad getting him back. I have Ade too so think that's a good move but Suarez just hasn't delivered the points to justify getting him over Rooney, RVP or Ade, though I do think he has massive potential. If he starts picking up the points then I might get him in for Ade.

    Taraabt -> Mata or VDV

For free, worth it or not?

    Given (Vorm)
Bosingwa, Enrique, Simpson (Gabbidon / DeLaet)
    Silva, Arteta, Sinclair, Taraabt (Moses)
    RVP, Rooney, Suarez

    My other problems are:

Im loving my front line! Its served me well so far, guess its all about timing.

Dropping Rooney would free up funds and im concerned his forms dipped abit, also worried that he might be shifted into a deeper role similar to last year when Hernandez and Welbeck are firing

Happened alot last year, Rooney playing behind Hernandez and as the game progresses Rooney seems to drop further and further back on the pitch.

When Rooney was brought on against Liverpool he was playing deep as well, both Hernandez and Welbeck infront of him.

Might be being abit overly sceptical about Rooney, im just trying to find a reason to get him out for Adebayor who i believe will be more prolific over the next 2 games.

Hey everyone, really struggling with where to go with my team atm.

    Currently my team is:

    Krul (Hennessey)
Simpson Bosingwa Kompany Enrique (De Laet)
    Ramires Nani Silva (Petrov Moses)
    Aguero Adebayor Suarez(c)

I have been thinking I want to get Sturridge in I think his run will keep going, probably bring him in for Aguero seeing as I have Silva for City coverage.

If I did that where/who should I upgrade? Could go Ramires > Gerrard but really unsure?

    Any help would be great!

I wouldn't rush to get Gerrad in just yet. He scored one free kick, which to be honest was a poor free kick and should have been easily blocked if the United wall didn't part like the Red Sea. He's just back from a very long lay off and even before the injury was inconsistent. At his price, I don't think he's worth the investment, not at the moment anyway.

    Krul (Vorm)
Enrique / Bosingwa / Kompany (Simpson, Ward)
Nasri / Young / Arteta / Cabaye (Dyer)
    Rooney / Suarez / Sturridge

I have 2 transfers and I need to maximise my score over the next 2 GWs (two legs of a knockout tournament I'm in).

    Considering Arteta > Ramsey
    Nasri > Mata

and then perhaps Rooney > Aguero the week after. Any problems with this?

you need some differentials. get rid of Aguero, Rooney and Adebayor.
      Replace with Torres, Heskey, Carrol.

just my opinion and you did ask for it 🙂

Gervinho, Defoe and Balotelli I reckon. Should give you enough cash to replace Brunt and Walters with Gerrard and Lampard.

Also thinking Silva's form could have hit a slump. What about Silva to Van De Vart? Or have I gone mental?

nah you are mental, altho I do see potential in VdV, they have some good fixtures ahead and tbh he will more than likely be scoring the fp's. My mid looks like this atm

        Petrov, Arteta, Silva, VdV (Moses)

My weak link is Arteta but will deal with him in gw11 wildcard
