Scout Report – Steven Whittaker

Norwich City’s first foray into the summer transfer market has begun with the acquisition of Steven Whittaker from Rangers on a four-year deal. The 28-year-old Scot becomes Chris Hughton’s first signing since joining from Birmingham last month and arrives on a free deal due to the cancellation of his contract at the crisis-hit Glasgow giants:

Although Hughton has stressed the new boy’s adaptability played a major part in his thinking, it’s likely that the move will address the problematic right-back area for the Norfolk club, with Kyle Naughton returning to parent club Spurs following the end of his season-long loan deal in 2011/12. The new man in charge revealed:

In Steven we have a player who is very versatile – he can play anywhere across the back four and anywhere across midfield, so there’s plenty of versatility there. It’s probably a good time for him. He has of course been used to playing at a very high level when he was at Rangers, and in a lot of big games with a passionate crowd behind him. So the stage of the Premier League is certainly one that won’t faze him with his experience.

The Statistics

A boyhood Hearts fan, Whittaker began his career at city rivals Hibs back in 2001/02. He lasted six seasons at the Edinburgh club but failed to nail down a regular role until his third campaign at Easter Road, when new boss Tony Mowbray installed him as first-choice at right-back. Whittaker made a total of 141 league appearances and scored four goals before securing a move to Rangers in the summer of 2007 for a fee of £2m.

Starting off as a left-back at Ibrox, Whittaker was afforded the chance to move to his more natural position on the opposite flank after the transfer of Alan Hutton to Spurs in January 2008. During his stint at the Glasgow club, Whittaker established himself in the national squad and racked up the silverware with as many as eight trophies accrued.

In total, he played 150 league games at Rangers, returning 19 goals and 16 assists, though the 2009-10 season was a particular stand-out as he grabbed 11 goals in all competitions. After objecting to the transfer of his contract from Rangers to a new company set up by owner Charles Green following the club’s recent financial meltdown, Whittaker was effectively a free agent and links up with compatriots Simon Lappin and Russell Martin at Carrow Road.

The Prospects

A regular role in Hughton’s back-four looks likely for the 6 foot 1 inch defender but Norwich’s problems in defence under Paul Lambert last time round need immediate address. The Canaries shipped 66 goals in the 2011/12 campaign – the joint-fourth worst record in the league – and picked up a mere three clean sheets all season, conceding in every one of their 19 fixtures on the road.

A price tag in the region of 4.5 can be expected but until we witness Norwich’s ability to keep out opponents, Fantasy managers are likely to steer well clear of their defensive assets. The fixture list has been particularly cruel to the Carrow Road club – Hughton’s first couple of months look horrendous and hand them just two decent looking matches – home clashes with QPR and West Ham – in the first eight Gameweeks of 2012/13.

Their first four road trips (ful, tot, new, che) could easily see them leave empty-handed, while the visit of Liverpool and Arsenal hardly entices investment. Essentially, then, it affords us a chance to sit back and assess Whittaker’s potential, analysing his ability to adapt to his new surroundings, while keeping a keen eye on the club’s progress under Hughton before we even begin to consider the prospect of drafting in the new boy or any of his fellow Norwich team mates.

Whats the thoughts on Spurs spending? I mean the only forward they have at the moment is Defoe, and he won't even be first choice. Any chance of AVB putting a word in at Porto for Hulk? Wouldn't be unlikely, and would be a nice subtle way ti say "Up yours Chelsea I stole your transfer target". They would also need another good striker seeing that VDV looks to be on the way out slowly. Sigurdsson should fill VDV's place. I reckon they'll go for a permanent contract for Adebayor or maybe bid for Sturridge on the cheap.(AVB seemed to have a soft spot for him when he managed Chelsea last season whereas RDM benches him). Maybe a young CBto replace King and a good midfielder and you're good to go.

Pompey, OK decent heads-up. He did look pretty comfortable at LB against England pre-Euros, although that was against England. That ability to cover BAE would certainly be handy given Danny's development failure.

I think Spurs might be one of the big winners of the transfer market this season. Remy, Ba, Vertonghen, Gylfi, Giu. Rossi, Krasic, Damiao, Moutinho, Sturridge, some of them are great footballers. Not so sure about AVB though..

Hello all. There's no chance of Hulk arriving at The Lane, the package needed would simply be too big for Levy to sign-off on, so let's put that to bed. And DVD leaving looks like mischief-making to me, I do not see him leaving even if Spurs pull off Siggy's signing.

But the point hs been amde about the lack of options up front. Studge might be considered, but would depend on the package (he's on about 70k, allegedly), and there's Citeh's desperation to flog Ade which could work in our favour. But remember, 8 weeks of transfer window to run and lots of business gets done late, so I'm not terribly edgy... yet! 🙂

Oh no I didn't mean leaving, I just meant being replaced by . VDV had major hamstring problems last few seasons and at his age I dont see it improving at this stage. Cue Sigurdsson. Might not get a buyer for those dodgey hamstrings anyway.

Don't need a CB if we get Vertonghen as expected.
Need a central midfielder if Modric goes - would love Moutinho but don't see it happening.
VdV may go - I'd do what Sylvie told me to do.
Adebayor - wages still a stumbling block.
Sturridge is an awful footballer but at the same time fills two voids that we have - don't see it happening though.
No chance of Hulk we aren't that big league and Levy isn't that splashy with the cash.

I know this is probably a bit outrageous and controversial, but just thought I'd throw it out there. If Man City wanted to sell Kolarov, would he be a good LB for United as oppose to Baines? Or even a cheeky bid for Aly Cissokho from Lyon? Just can't really picture Baines at United. Even Evra at 31 looks like a better option than Baines. Not knocking them by any means just trying to be realistic. Baines is 27, surely United will want a younger LB.

No Scholes? Having a centre mid who can pass the ball and dictate tempo is handy, and bringing Rooney back nullify's attacking threat.

Is he a good LB full stop? I'm not sure he is, fine going forwards but his defending is pretty ordinary. Can't quite see why Citch bought him in the first place, certainly not for £17m-odd.

Still, makes a fun FPL player. 🙂

Baines' interception and blocks are the only average/slightly above average stats. Not even gonna count the goals as he is the penalty taker for Everto, if it was from open play fair enough. IMO Kolarov or Cissokho would be better.

The article reads to me like a warning against him - doesn't matter how good he is, most of a defender's points come from clean sheets and Norwich have serious problems with those

+1... Exactly how i read it. I can see much more value in the West Brom, Sunderland, Villa e.t.c. defenders. Norwich have a poor opening run of fixtures so we can wait and see anyway.

Too much faith in Villa at the start is a reason why I should do better 😆 but Cuellar at Sunderland like we mentioned yesterday is a good shout. McLeish is much more defensive than Lambert (obviously a huge difference between them) so although we can't defend much worse than we did last season, I can see the points being in the favour of players like N'Zogbia, Bent and Holman, although defenders may be a decent price to warrant one of them..

Not for me Laters. I think he's had his day, fitness issues unlikely to improve and Felliani looks more than capable of shifting into that Jelly support role. I'm sure Tim will still get games, but FPL appearances will count against him, and he'll be more expensive, I'd guess.

i suppose that might lead to ppl not posting in the fear that their post will be lost on the previous page

Interesting (for me, anyway) aspect to AVB - youth development. It must gall Levy to keep being asked to splash out on players when we have produced so little internally. In the last 5-7 years only Jake Livermore looks like he can become a genuine first team player, the likes of Townsend is Championship quality, same goes for Rose, while Harry Kane has struggled to make marks at either Orient or Millwall.

Pretty poor showing since Ledley King came through.

Over the same period Soton have produced Theo, Bale, AOC - two intl regulars and one seemingly about to start a long-term intl career. And they've got that new young hopeful whose name I cannot quite place as the minute, coming through.

United haven't produced much lately. Welbeck is obvious. Evans perhaps, but he's 24-odd. Did Cleverley come through? I'm not sure, but perhaps him, other than that...

Doesn't it come down to area codes? Can't a side only recruit from within 50 miles? This would mean that Southampton would have little competition for young talent in the area.

This and investment in a good youth setup produces the results

If it does which I'm not sure about, Portsmouth are right next door. Southampton just seem to be getting it right on the youth side.
Whether that is selection or training I don't know. I think they have a few useful sport oriented schools in the area.

Yes Tommy, each club has a 'catchment' area which they can source kids from. It was designed to stop United hooking Beckham at 15. But Soton is a city of maybe 200k. Even factoring in the 7/8 pro-London clubs, Spurs catchment area could be five-times as large, by conservative estimates.

          True that.

Southampton have also had to rely on their youth giving them exposure to get back where they are while Spurs are in a position where they can't take risks bleeding youth into the setup.

Most will go to Arsenal with their setup anyway

First we have too many foreign players in the Prem, hampering youth development, then we have too few.

    It's a sick-lical world we live in.

Do you guys think that racism could be at the heart of the continued tensions in the French National team? France is notoriously volatile with it being a white ruled state with a large population of arab and african people. I just wondered if that has spilled over into the National team with racial divide causing clashes between players and staff.

Absolute minimum I'd see Tevez coming in at is £11M. Just because his overall points total wasn't high, doesn't mean he didn't earn a pretty decent ppg (I assume he did anyway).
