Jack Wilshere is likely to be ruled out of Arsenalโ€™s Champions League trip to Bayern with an ankle injury. Harry Redknapp hails Bobby Zamoraโ€™s weekend display, though is less enthusiastic over Adel Taarabt. Romelu Lukaku may be taken off penalty duties for West Brom, while John Ruddy edges towards a comeback for Norwich:

According to reports in the Telegraph, Jack Wilshere could be set to miss Arsenalโ€™s crucial Champions League game in Bayern on Wednesday evening. The midfielder is said to have picked up the injury in the Gameweek 28 defeat at Spurs and has been recuperating in Dubai since the north London derby defeat โ€“ given he has previously spent 14 months on the sidelines with a similar complaint, itโ€™s a real concern for Arsene Wengerโ€™s side after the youngster returned to first-team duties last October. Any possible absence for Wilshere would certainly benefit Lukas Podolskiโ€™s game time โ€“ the German international has been ousted from the starting XI in the last four after Wenger moved Wilshere to โ€œthe holeโ€ and shifted Santi Cazorla to the left flank at Podolskiโ€™s expense. Elsewhere, Kieran Gibbs could be set to return from a thigh injury for the match โ€“ he could fill it an left-back as new boy Nacho Monreal is ineligible, though may face a task to retain his starting berth for Saturdayโ€™s trip to Swansea.

Harry Redknappโ€™s comments on a couple of QPR players could hardly have been more contrasting after Saturdayโ€™s 3-1 win over Sunderland. Bobby Zamora was the recipient of plenty praise after he overcame a couple of injuries to take his place against the Black Cats. His availability afforded Redknapp the chance to roll out a 4-4-2 and saw his side win back-to-back games for the first time this term, with Loic Remy grabbing his third goal in four starts. Zamora was subbed off on 73 minutes โ€“ just three minutes after his side had taken the lead and his manager is clearly keen to manage his game time:

“Bobby’s got a bad hip and his ankle is very, very bad. He needed an injection but he has played through it. We won’t get Bobby 100 per cent fit this season with that hip but he wants to play through it – that is what you want. We had other players, one or two with little knocks, that weren’t fit. But Bobby puts it in for the team. You need people like that. It’s what makes your football club. You need characters.”

Redknapp was far less complementary when it came to Adel Taarabt, however. Dropped for the first time since Gameweek 7 last weekend, the Moroccan called off injured for the weekend match and watched his replacement Junior Hoilett provide an assist for the second game running. Hoilettโ€™s form aside, his managerโ€™s words certainly hint it may be difficult for Taarabt to regain his first-team place anytime soon:

“Taarabt wasn’t fit suddenly. So I picked people who were fit and wanted to play. What’s wrong with him? I don’t know, he’s got a little thigh strain or something. When will he be fit again? He should be fit tomorrow! I know the ones I can trust and the ones that are not quite with us.”

Steve Clarke has hinted he may change the spot-kick pecking order at West Brom after seeing Romelu Lukakuโ€™s penalty saved by Swansea stopper Michel Vorm in Saturdayโ€™s 2-1 win. The Baggies boss lauded the Belgianโ€™s display after he served up his 13th goal of the season but also went on to say:

“Romelu is improving all the time. Playing is good for him, which is why he came here. Iโ€™m sure heโ€™ll spend all next week practising penalties. But, who knows, he might not get the next one. We have got one or two lads who are ready to step in”.

The news has had little effect on Lukakuโ€™s popularity, with over 12,000 FPL managers already snapping him up ahead of next weekendโ€™s trip to Stoke. With Shane Long continuing to struggle due to an ankle injury, the Belgian looks set to continue in the lone forward role at the Britannia this Saturday โ€“ with seven goals and a pair of assists on his last eight, the Pottersโ€™ beleaguered backline could be set for a battering once again.

Fantasy owners of Norwichโ€™s Mark Bunn were given a heads-up yesterday after the stand-in keeper revealed main rival John Ruddy was edging his way towards a comeback. Bunn spoke to the press after the weekend goalless draw with Southampton:

“The main thing is the clean sheet. John’s fit in a couple of weeks so I’ll just keep working hard. I was a bit disappointed letting in four against Man United but I’ve been delighted with my form.”

His performances were also backed up by Chris Hughton, who went out of his way to praise the keeper after a string of saves kept Mauricio Pochettinoโ€™s side at bay:

“Heโ€™s done ever so well. Heโ€™s got that little bit of composure about him, plus because heโ€™s not one of the really tall goalkeepers he has got that agility. When they pressed quite well, he had to kick a few balls and he showed good quality in his kicking, and I think certainly overall heโ€™s done very well since coming into the team.”

With Ruddy sidelined due to a thigh injury since Gameweek 13, Bunn has picked up plenty of interest as a cut-price option between the sticks. Almost 6% of FPL managers have snapped up the stopper โ€“ he has risen from 4.0 to 4.2 and returned three clean sheets in his last five appearances, as the Canaries step up in resilience at the back. In spite of Hughtonโ€™s comments, Bunnโ€™s owners will be concerned, nevertheless โ€“ Ruddy is thought to be the Canariesโ€™ number one and once he’s 100% fit, Bunn is likely to find it difficult to retain his starting berth. Michael Turner or Russell Martin, at 4.2 and 4.3 respectively, look the obvious alternatives, though Ruddy is now down to 4.5 and with a strong schedule to end the season, could well benefit once available.

While Saturdayโ€™s result helped Norwich to their ninth clean sheet of the season, they have now scored in just two of their last eight league games, with a missed spot-kick from Grant Holt proving costly. Hughton has shifted formation in recent matches, moving from 4-4-1-1 to 4-4-2 in an attempt to address the problem โ€“ while this paid off against Everton in Gameweek 27, it failed to make a difference against a determined Saints backline on Saturday. Speaking to the clubโ€™s official website, Hughton admitted he is a little concerned over his sideโ€™s inability to find the net and is looking to strike a better balance between defence and attack:

“From a defensive point of view, if youโ€™re one of the four defenders or the goalkeeper, then youโ€™re delighted with the clean sheet. If youโ€™re an offensive player, then itโ€™s a little bit frustrating that you havenโ€™t managed to get a goal. Itโ€™s the balances that we have to work on week-in, week-out. At the moment weโ€™re seeing Queens Park Rangers winning games, so every team in that bottom group as such, probably up to ourselves, are capable of winning games. Youโ€™re never close enough to survival until itโ€™s impossible, and itโ€™s certainly going to be tense in these final nine games for everyone involved.”

*** If Van Persie joins United, will he share points with Rooney? ***

    *PPG Analysis*

    RVP (without Rooney) = 7.525
    RVP (with Rooney) = 6.42
    RVP (overall) = 6.9

To put this into perspective, Bale has 7.4 PPG, Mata 6.3, Suarez 6.9, Walcott 6.2.
Rooney has 6 PPG but has had so many sub appearances that it's hard to get an accurate reading. Points per minute would be uneven as well because he would get points for appearances when he only played a short while.

So Van Persie is evidentially not good value for his price when Rooney plays, but he still maintains one of the highest PPG rates in the game. However, the additional funds that replacing him generates, could be spent upgrading your team and increasing it's overall output. 1 goal in 6 games is a worrying stat for such an uber expensive player, and one we tend rely upon for consistent goals.

Imo you have to look at form and not overall PPG. Bale and Suarez are both miles ahead of RvP in the past weeks. So is Rooney. You should also look at chances created and touches inside the box in your analysis.

His recent output definitely doesn't warrant the expense - but it's the possibility of him bagging a hattrick against Reading - and everybody else captaining him but me that makes it easy to resist the temptation of transferring him out... but if the blanks keep coming that could change...

RVP was great early season when there were few consistent captaincy picks - having that 10-20 points to sit on (knowing most other people would too) was a real help and worth 13m+. However, now we have Bale and Suarez delivering those returns consistently AND will have DGWs galore until the end of the season I don't think RVP is "essential" (although this week will hurt).

IMO this debate is really for those who don't currently own either player. I think the main resistance of Rooney is coming from those who already own RVP. This debate isn't really aimed at you as it would be a waste to make suck a sideways move.

If you need the cash sell him. If you are chasing in a mini league, sell him. I you are in a good position to win your mini league then keep him. 6.whatever a game is a goal a game for a fwd. He has not scored in a while, has recently been given his first rest of the season and is pure class. He will explode soon with a hatttrick and an assist and not having him for such an explosion will end your season at this stage since most on your mini league will Capt him.

I see there's no mad rush for managers to bring RVP back into their fold (less people have transferred him in today than Downing believe it or not).

I suspect many have been frivolous with their freed up cash and now need to take a hit or two to bring this weeks captain of choice back into their squad.

he gets a lot of stick, but he was actually decent when at Villa. I think he had a lot of off-the-field issues which didnt help.. that said, the Twitter Q&A was just hilarious

that as well.. It's a risk, but analysing the facts it could prove to be a worth while one. Having watched every LFC game this season I really have to say he's been improving allot. Looking dangerous, both for assists and goals. And this from me who has never really believed in him :/

I think he will. But that still won't bring enough points to justify his price tag imo. People going Rooney over him are well aware he will score well, they are under no illusions, it's just they think they can grab more points by spending the cash more wisely. Rooney is also likely to be involved in RVP's goals.

I think SAF will play Hernandez more and more as the season progresses and RVP will lose gametime. I have a hard time believing that he cares whether RVP wants the Golden Boot or not when picking the team and the season is all but wrapped up/completely wrapped up. I seem to be the only one who think so here though.

i don't know why ppl are losing faith in RVP? he scored 1 in the last 5 ok but keep in mind his points return is 2,5,12,4,5 (a goal, 3 assists and 6 BAPS). Keep in mind madrid games were sandwiched between and he played 40 and 60 mins in his last 2 games. For someone going through a dire spell thats pretty decent. Remember Suarez went through a dire spell earlier in the season and return 5 consecutive blanks. rooney goes through many of these spells as well.

The fact is that RVP plays at home against the worst team and worst defense in the league and who lost their manager this week as well. ManU will also want to make a reaction after disappointing results against madrid and chelsea. With RVP not playing many minutes lately he should be fresh and if utd score 5 and rvp (c) returns a 30+ return u will want to kill urself ๐Ÿ™‚

suarez plays away from home and liverpool have disappointed away in some easy matches this season. Bale is playing against Fulham who have been in good form lately.

    I'm going with rvp(c)

I think, as someone said above, this debate doesn't really apply to anyone who already owns one of them. It would be beyond mad to swap RVP for Rooney.

But for those who have neither and want to bring one in, RVP is less of an obvious choice than it would have been a while ago. RVP's form & price are mismatched right now.
