Pre-Season

Sleeper – Matt Jarvis

Having tasted relegation with Wolves at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, Matt Jarvis was afforded the chance of a quick top-flight return with just a few days left of last summer’s transfer window. Costing West Ham a club record fee in the region of £10m, the winger was soon followed by the loan acquisition of Andy Carroll as Sam Allardyce looked to freshen up his front three in light of the Hammers’ promotion:

Initially, there was a degree of relative optimism that Jarvis – at 6.0 – could potentially rival Kevin Nolan as a genuine mid-price Fantasy contender in the Hammers midfield. Given that his final season at Molineux had harvested eight goals, six assists and 14 bonus points, for a respectable 142 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, Jarvis’ delivery from the left flank looked tailor-made for Carroll’s aerial abilities, with plenty of assists anticipated.

By the time the season had come to an end, however, Jarvis had proved a bitter disappointment for Fantasy managers. Despite a security of starts which saw him make 29 first XI appearances (in addition to three games off the bench), he found the net just twice and also chipped in with just a couple of FPL assists, ending his first term at Upton Park on just 92 points in the FPL game – a full 57 points behind Nolan, and 50 points less than his tally for Wolves the previous year.

The Prospects

In all likelihood, Jarvis’ displays over the course of 2012/13 should see his price drop further across the Fantasy games. Given his minimal impact, there’d be little surprise if the former Wolves man slipped down to 5.5 in FPL but, while last term’s returns are undoubtedly far from persuasive, his home form towards the tail end of last term, which harvested a goal and four bonus points in his final couple of Upton Park appearances, suggests he may be worth monitoring.

Furthermore, the number of chances created last season indicates he was more than a little unlucky not to pick up a far greater number of assists. According to the Opta definition, Jarvis failed to supply a single assist for his Hammers team mates but, over the course of the campaign, made close to 50 “key passes” – a clear indication that he maintained a steady source of creativity from the flank. Indeed, Jarvis supplied 10 more goalscoring opportunities than Theo Walcott over 2012/13, for example, though thanks to his team mates’ superior finishing, the latter picked up 13 FPL assists, or 10 according to Opta.

While Carroll is currently back at parent club Liverpool, Allardyce has already admitted that securing the big forward’s future on a permanent basis is a “big priority”. The Geordie’s impact towards the end of the season also suggests he found his feet after a patchy settling-in period and, if he does indeed arrive, could bolster Jarvis’s potential next time out if he continues in the same vein. Allardyce has also been linked with Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo as he looks to rectify a record that produced a mere 11 goals on the road all season – the worst away haul in the Premier League.

With Nolan set for an increase in cost after finishing the season with a flourish, it may well be that the Hammers skipper is priced out of our options in the mid-price bracket. Given that Mark Noble will remain the club’s spot-kick taker and offer us a budget midfield alternative, Jarvis is likely to stay firmly off Fantasy radars next time round. If he can maintain his creative endeavours, though, the winger will be optimistic of picking up more returns next time round and may be a real under the radar option as Allardyce looks to ensure his side avoid “second season syndrome” and improve upon last term’s tenth placed finish.

Following on from Roscola's post about rotation.

You 'could' have been potentially over 50 points better than if you had one of the keepers on their own. That is why rotation is good, you just have to get better at choosing the right keeper 😉

And, i'd like to reiterate, you have insurance against a bad patch of form/injury/card for one of the keepers.

So if you have foresight about which are the right keepers, then rotation works, otherwise it doesn't?

No, but even H/A or what most sane people would do will likely get you as many points as having one that plays every week.

If you happen to get the picks right then you have the potential to far exceed what would be possible with just a single keeper. I suppose it's similar to predicting form etc for attacking players, if you get it right you do well.

Just my 2 cents worth 🙂

Surely the trouble happens when you pick say Vorm and Marshall, and Swansea carry on conceding 1 goal every 2 games away whilst cardiff get hammered away put pick up home CSs.

Then you're jinxed....rotation could actually become damaging!

Whilst I dont think I would ever have done it, Everton under Moyes quite often produced results away to muck up the rotation systems. It was Moyes that broke Swansea at the Brittania two seasons ago and brought Vorm down to the level of a mere mortal for the rest of the season.

Agree, but he won't be imo, much more attacking than Noble, he effectively plays OOP in the front 3. I know he had a very poor season with 2 goals and 2 assists, but I would expect him to be 0.5 at least more than Noble.

Before the release of HC I was of the belief that when a new post came, the whole discussion thread would move along to that post or something like that.

Won't all these good sticky-discussions and Hot topics "disappear" now? Or are we supposed to go back to old posts and continue the discussions where they first originated?

Yes, but when I sort by sticky comments first, I only get the sticky comments for this post.

I like the Hot topics in the comment bar which gives a nice overview of these discussion, but would it be possible in some way to transfer the hot topics through to the newest post so that tese topics will always appear when we sort by sticky comments?

This is assuming most people "hang" in the newest post and switch back and forth between different sortings to get the best of both worlds.

Last night The Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas arrived for a medical in Liverpool and is set to become the latest in a long line of new Premier League recruits already signed this summer.

Other notable new recruits include Villa’s Aleksander Tonev and Man City’s Fernandinho.

But which of the many new Premier League recruits, who have already signed or are on the verge of signing, will be a hit and which will flop? Be great to get your views on this our first daily hot topic discussion.

Fernandinho's done well in a weaker league, but he's no spring chicken...can't see much resale value in him.

One book I go on about alot is Soccernomics, which details how Lyon have a successful transfer strategy, always with a keen eye on resale value and the value of their own players. they try and target early 20s players who have yet to peak and they sell on when someone offers more than their value. Man City are not following this model very well.

I think Thiago to Man Utd (to replace Scholes) could in potential be an awesome signing.

I could see Carrick and Thiago operating behind Kagawa with van Persie up front as a very strong attacking & high possesion scenario. I think then they could do well again in the champions league!

You can now vote for comments and this will give a rating boost or penalty to the comment, the weighting of which depends on your reputation which is maintained behind the scenes. You earn reputation by earning votes and generally posting good stuff that gets recognition from the community and us contributors and moderators.

So voting adds rating and you can now sort an entire thread of comments by that rating. This allows you to quickly catch up on the days most valuable, significant, informative or perhaps entertaining discussions.

You can also go straight to the key stuff by viewing Hot Topics. You’ll see a new tab on the recent comments widget – click this and you’ll view the last ten Hot Topics. These are discussions singled out by mods and staff members because we feel there’s value in reading them or perhaps they include information that we want visitors to take in.

You can also view another user’s profile and your own profile by clicking a username or gravatar.

For now, that’s all that you’ll notice that’s different, aside from a few badges and the general design changes.

Also I know that every once in a blue moon another Joga Bonito comes along, I've heard now that it's like highlander and there must be only one, how can I guarantee that I'm the only Joga bonito?

The rating/reputation isn't publicly viewable (unless you reach the next reputation level, in which case the 1 next to your name becomes a 2). It's just based on the up- and down-votes on your comments.

If you contribute to the community, the upvotes from other users will follow 🙂

So I know many people have been excited about Martinez being appointed as Everton manager and the prospect of Baines as a wingback. but in fact this may not be what we want.

this article breaks down the result of Everton playing such a system last season against stoke and it's tactical effects: http://theexecutionersbong.wordpress.com/2013/03/31/tactical-analysis-the-everton-back-3-experiment/

as you can see, a significant decrease in the number of crosses from 44 the previous time they played stoke (using their normal formation) to 20 with Baines as a wing back. this makes sense because baines as a wing back won't have an outside mid to combine with and overlap as he'll be the sole source of width on his side.

yes this is only one game but the way I see it, perhaps we're better off (fantasy wise) if Everton remain playing a 4411

I can't see how he can possibly be more attacking than last year anyway, he was essentially a wing back last season. Do you still not think that he'll be playing in a red shirt next season anyway?

Its not just the strategy but the manager who gives the instructions I think Martinez would give him more freedom under such a system

Pienaar played an important role in facilitating Baines attacking play. Their link up play, Pienaar's movement and unselfish play allowed Baines to get beyond him constantly and delier crosses. Baines would lose that protection as a wing-back and might need to be more cautious with his attacking runs.

Can we expect to see an even more attacking role for Pienaar then? Going by the 3-4-3 Wigan formation, will then Pienaar and Mirallas play as the two wide forwards?

exactly, Baines partnership with Pienaar is very important to the way he plays and is a key reason as to why he's able to attack so much and so effectively. without Pienaar to link up with, his attacking won't be as effective.

interesting about him lacking protection and needing to be more cautious. I never thought of that aspect but it's definitely one that could effect the way he plays

He might make less crosses, but is he getting in the box more etc – Boyce style.

Let's face it his crosses are practically useless with the strikers they have atm, he's mainly getting assists from set pieces and when he's actually in the box.

Sticky comments are selected by the mods. Discussion rating is decided by our votes. In an ideal world the mods are selecting the comments which we are voting up as a community. Additionally, by stickying a comment it will be seen more and thus will receive more votes in a self perpetuating cycle.

Rating sorts by amount of upvotes/downvotes (remember - upvotes from those with higher rep are weighted higher).

Sticky sorts by the ones that have been stickied (i.e. turned green) by a mod due to the fact that they're particularly interesting.

I'm not really sold on Mourinho to be honest. I know it sounds crazy, how can I doubt the newly-dubbed "Happy One"? Here's why:

            - Chelsea have not been short of success recently, winning both European trophies in two seasons, competing in the Super Cup twice as a result. No doubt Mourinho can (and probably will) bring PL success, this time around Chelsea aren't in need of instant success.

            - Chelsea have a fantastic squad and a brilliant youth setup. Mourinho is known for his notoriously poor handling of relationships, where he leaves before anything major needs to be done about it. I would've thought a more stable manager with experience of youth players would be brought in to help the squad grow, leading to sustained success. Mourinho is used to unlimited supplies and being able to offload anybody he likes, but with the squad he has he doesn't have much room to change, how will this affect him?

            - Mourinho has never been at a club long, we all know this. Although in his press conference he suggested otherwise, what evidence is there really to show that he is ready to settle at a club?

I'm not saying he's not the right choice, or a poor manager, because he is one of the best out there, but there is a reason Ferguson chose Moyes over Mourinho. Stability is the key in football in my opinion, and Mourinho can't guarantee this.

Just my thoughts, it got me really thinking after his conference and i've only just found time to express it.

You could be right but only Mourinho knows.

It seems he's more interested in a long-term project but there's nothing to say he won't have instant success this season.

                Hi Tinkerman,

Success is relative, Mourinho's main problem is potentially being victim of the high expectancy than fans have of him. I guess that's why the Chelsea PR guys have played down his arrival as much as possible.

There will surely be some form of hangover to deal with. Sure he may have left Lampard and Terry as best buddies, but what about the rest of the squad? I am sure some fringe players still remember being badly treated by him, I bet Bertrand has a bone to pick with him.

Cheers for the replies guys. It'll be interesting to see if he can get rid of the 'instant success only' tag and finally commit to a club. Would be weird but nice to see 😛

Likely pairs for perfect Home/Away rotation:

            Swansea/Cardiff
            United/City
            Liverpool/Everton
            Newcastle/Sunderland
            Arsenal/Tottenham
            West Brom/Villa
            Chelsea/Fulham
            Palace/West Ham
            Norwich/Hull?
            Southampton/Stoke?

Newcastle and Sunderland could provide some nice budget rotation if they can rediscover their form.

That is probably right. Sunderland have problems, though, and Newcastle have DePardieu ... so ...

I would like to know what went so badly wrong with Newcastle. They got 15 cleanies under DePardieu the season before so he is capable of producing decent defensive performances. If it's all explained by injuries plus Europa then they should be better next season

I think there may be a problem with the training, with DePardieu. Or dressing room unrest.

Here's something to do when you have a quiet five minutes:

            1) click on your own username
            2) scroll down to your own comment history
            3) click on last page
            4) read your earliest comment
            5) cringe

Mine was unsurprisingly boring and generic:

I was bigging up O'Hara 2 seasons ago and he had a terrible campaign.

I was also discussing whether to get Zog or Bent for Villa 😳

I guess it was pre-season then so nobody really knew what they were talking about!

            Dear Mark,

I know you want to attract a better class of member so can I just apologise in advance for if any potentially new members go back and read my comment history then decide to steer well clear of FFS.

            Sorry.

p.s. i blame the mods for not doing their job properly.

I think the 'Post Comment' button should be on the right hand side. When you click 'Reply' and you finish typing a message. your cursor should still be on the right hand side where 'Reply' was. I know i'm splitting hairs here but I'm sure it will make the act of replying more streamlined.
