The Community Round Up

Tottenham’s new striker Roberto Soldado and the Fantasy Premier League game’s new Bonus Points System were among the key issues vexing the community over the past seven days. We take our weekly look back at the big discussions that have recently slipped off the Hot Topics widget, as well as catch up with the latest developments in our community leagues.

Hottest Topics

Transfer dealings have caught the eye of the community this week, with Mathmo running the rule over Tottenham’s latest recruit Soldado. Mathmo predicts he may take a little while to adapt to the English Premier League but once he does the goals are set to flow. Be warned though, it seems that Soldado is unlikely to rack up many assists.

Soldado and Wayne Rooney were the latest subjects of our resident video expert Brutus619, who has been analysing their performances to assess their key strengths. Turns out both could be set for ‘surprise package’ status this season.

The 3rd Turd has been at his abacus again to look closely at the FPL’s new bonus system and create one of our most popular ever comment posts. His analysis based on 2011/12 data gives a game by game breakdown of how the new bonus allocation would have affected players’ points during that season. Turns out that goalkeepers could be the surprise beneficiaries of the changes. Make a cuppa before sitting down and soaking this one up.

Fifth midfield options provided the inspiration for Kings of Lyon’s post, which sparked an interesting discussion about the best budget options in midfield.  Could Everton’s Ross Barkley be a surprise selection in teams? Athletico Timbo certainly thinks he’s worth considering. For Evs, Cardiff’s Kim could be a shrewd purchase at just 5m in the FPL game.  According to our resident Wales expert the word on the streets of Cardiff is that not only is Kim nailed on, but a role in “the hole” behind a lone forward beckons.

Ever wondered how the Premier League’s newest recruits would have fared under an FPL scoring model in their previous leagues? The Puntmaster was on hand to delve into the stats and create these remarkable tables of their progress if FPL points had been applied to leagues such as The Championship and La Liga.

Community Leagues

FFS UEFA’s Transfer Window Simulation (TWS) reached the second round of bidding for strikers last week. The best player in the round, Robert Lewandowski, moved to BonZ’s Cardiff, while the leaders of the game are now Norwich, under The Shadow’s guidance. This week, clubs will be looking to trade players amongst themselves.

Meanwhile FFS UEFA’s leagues return for their third installment, and along with it the live score site, press releases, matchday reviews and a lot more. If you want to represent a European club of your choice, be sure to check out the details and register here before the deadline of August 9.

    My season-opener

    Jääskeläinen
    Ivanna, Rat, Baines
    Cazorla, Schneiderlin, Coutinho, Snodgrass, Hazard
    Lukaku, Giroud

    Subs: Boruc, Anelka, Chester, Clyne

Jaakelainen rotates around with Boruc for the season. Rat and Clyne also rotate perfectly. Baines could be switched out for Vertonghnen once I'm a bit more confident about his fitness, and free up funds for up ahead.

Should I do something about defence? Beginning to have my doubts about Cazorla too, with him returning late to training from duty and what-not.

Isn't Anelka at home to Southampton GW1?

I would rather a 4.5 or 5.0 instead of Schneiderlin. Jussi at 5.5 for rotating is a lot. You could almost get Silva for Snodgrass if you downgraded those two.

5.5 is pretty steep for a 5th mid though, if he were 5.0 I'd consider him but I'm not so sure at 5.5

So you suppose I should stick with one of Boruc/Jussi and go for a non-playing?

I'm keen on Cazorla too but watch out for him playing in Spain's friendly in Ecuador a few days before Arsenal's game. He could be rested so I'm waiting until GW2/later for him.

Is he? I didn't know. Coutinho had a pretty strong end to last season, also a pretty storming pre-season. Not too confident of what to expect at Everton with Martinez at the helm so I'll wait out on that Mirallas decision, but that's a solid alternative - Thanks.

Some thoughts I had on Dzeko.

GW1 - Negredo may well be in the Spain squad. The game being MNF may help in terms of an extra days rest but I'd be suprised if Pellegrini starts him, I think Dzeko and Jovetic start (Aguero won't be match fit)

GWs 2and 3. I wouldn't like to predict whether he will start both, one or neither of these games. But City play car, HUL in these 2 games. I'd expect Dzeko to be involved in both at some point, and in games like these he could do some damage either way.

GW4 - City play Stoke away. This is game that seems tailor made for someone of Dzeko's aerial prowess.

So, is Dzeko a season keeper? No, not worth the rotation risk. But as 3-4 GW punt he is definitely worth it, as he could do some real damage. After GW3 or 4 it should be fairly simple to transition into Carroll/Berba/RvW etc.

Soldado will be a bit harder unless you can find 2m from somewhere (Hazard maybe?) But the point is the same, he should be good for those first few weeks at which point you hop off to the bandwagon of choice with hopefully a fair few points and maybe 0.1 or 0,2 extra in your pocket

For first 5 GW I think I'd rather have Arsenal than Liverpool tbh. Also, if you want Migs + Mert it's 11.0 but Ches + Toure is 10.5 and worth the punt as things stand.

Chesney could get dropped at any moment AGAIN

If Skrtel leaves, which is looking likely, Pool will buy a cb and Toure won't be nailed on.

Is Liverpool being hyped too much and is Newcastle going under the radar?

Are people getting over-excited by Liverpool defensive coverage for the first few fixtures? With the exception of GW1 (STO), I don't really see too many clean sheets after that until their fixtures ease up.

GW1: STO - Good prospect of CS here.
GW2: avl - Pretty average fixture IMO and I would be surprised if Tekkers didn't score against them.
    GW3: MUN - Always a tough game.
GW4: swa - Swansea have shown they can pretty much score against anyone.
GW5: SOT - Good prospect of CS here.

In comparison for example of other defences that are being overlooked:

Newcastle with 5.0 defenders (equivalent of Toure) but cheaper than Liverpool for the rest of players + GK.
GW1: mcy - No prospect of CS here
GW2: WHM - Good prospect of CS against a team that doesn't score many away from home.
GW3: FUL - Good prospect again against a team that doesn't score on their travels
GW4: avl - Not the best fixture, similar to above for Liverpool GW2 where Villa are likely to score.
GW5: HUL - Good fixture against a newly promoted team.

Not to mention of course that Debuchy/Santon carry a lot more attacking threat to Toure.

    Conclusion:
Of course the Liverpool defence is better than Newcastle's but people are going mental about getting Migs in to play him every game or even double up with Toure. Doesn't Newcastle potentially offer a better option for the first 5 GWs at least which is realistically what people should be planning for anyway. Indeed for GW5 onwards, Liverpool's fixtures ease up and I can see quite a few CS after that but, until then, Newcastle seem to have the advantage with the better fixtures, a usually solid defensive team and its options offer much more attacking threat at the same price.

In a season where they will no longer have Europe to worry about, Newcastle could surprise people and do quite well. With those starting fixtures, it would thus seem wise to invest and take a punt. Perhaps attacking players are questionable with Cisse (8.5) being overpriced compared to the likes of Giroud, etc, and position/injury question marks over Remy/HBA, but the defensive players look like a sound investment.

Good point regarding set-pieces, I hadn't noticed that. I wonder if Campana could take some off him though (pure speculation on my part). The new acquisition could be a good differential and may get goals. Of course, any Palace player ought to be a differential...

Dzeko and Lukaku are huge rotation risks

Lukaku has a DGW and his competition is Torres and Ba. So IMO is worth the punt

But Dzeko has to fight his place, against Negredo, Jovetic and Aguero, three of the best current strikers

Why so many people have him already? Wait a couple of weeks to see who is the most secure City striker

I hate City right now, too many choices, and NO really secure starters

IMO the best City coverage is Navas (there isn't any other RW in their roster), and he doesn´t score goals

I like DeGea + Manone, particularly since DeGea has tough opening fixtures. Didn't he do ok on save points last season?

I'm Cech and Boruc also. Makes it easier to avoid post DGW hits, and I have a feeling Mourinho's CFC will be tight at the back.

Usually I'm 2 rotating cheapo keepers at this stage, but different this year.

Surprised at the lack of Ravel Morrison in RMTs, he has really been tearing it up this pre-season. He's been instrumental in almost all of the games West Ham have played, scoring and creating goals so maybe Big Sam has knocked some sense into him.

He could be one of the bargains of the season at just 4.5 if he can continue this form when the real football begins. West Ham’s kind opening schedule gives him a good opportunity to make an immediate impact. So why the lack of interest in him?
