The Weekend Team News

Olivier Giroud is back for Arsenal, though Aaron Ramsey fails to recover in time for the trip to Villa. Everton will assess three key defenders for Norwich’s visit, though Ross Barkley emerges as a doubt. Southampton could welcome back Artur Boruc for a home clash with West Brom. Liverpool’s Daniel Agger may be out for a month, Jonathan De Guzman and Dwight Tiendalli are sidelined for Swansea’s trip to United, whilst Norwich have mixed news on the injury front:

Arsene Wenger confirmed Aaron Ramsey is still sidelined for the trip to Villa, though Kieran Gibbs has “a little chance” of returning. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is available after a five-month spell on the sidelines – the winger played 45 minutes for the reserves last night and his manager admitted he “wouldn’t have any hesitation” of playing him against the midlands outfit. Olivier Giroud and Mesut Ozil are back in training and available, though Thomas Vermaelen is likely to miss out after coming off against Spurs last weekend with a knee problem.

Roberto Martinez will check over the fitness of a quartet of players ahead of the visit of Norwich. Ross Barkley is a doubt after picking up a toe problem in the FA cup win over QPR. In defence, Leighton Baines was missing against QPR due to a back spasm but Martinez expects the left-back to recover, whilst Sylvain Distin and Phil Jagielka “are close to making Saturday, but also on the verge of missing” after recent hamstring problems.

Southampton have been boosted by the possible return of Artur Boruc after a hand injury for the visit of West Brom. In his pre-match press conference, Mauricio Pochettino would only say the Polish stopper “may or may not play” this weekend. The Saints boss also revealed that Rickie Lambert and Gaston Ramirez are “recovering well” and will be assessed going into the clash against West Brom, after the pair were forced off in the cup last weekend.

Michael Laudrup will be without the services of Jonathan de Guzman (calf) and Dwight Tiendalli (hamstring) for Swansea’s trip to Old Trafford. Pablo Hernandez and Roland Lamah are also “two to three weeks” away from a return for the Welsh outfit.

Norwich boss Chris Hughton has confirmed Seb Bassong, Wes Hoolahan and Bradley Johnson are all fit for the encounter with Everton, after the trio missed the FA Cup tie with Fulham last weekend, Meanwhile, Michael Turner and Jonny Howson remain out with hamstring and back injuries respectively. Hughton also revealed Anthony Pilkington and Alex Tettey have returned to light training, and could be pushing for a recall ahead of Hull’s visit to Carrow Road later this month.

Liverpool have suffered a fresh blow in defence with Daniel Agger reportedly out for four weeks with a calf strain. The Danish international limped off in the closing stages of the FA Cup win over Oldham and has since revealed the extent of his injury to the Danish press.

Hull defender Paul McShane is sidelined for three to four weeks with an ankle injury. Sone Aluko (Achilles) and Robbie Brady (groin) are on course for a return at the end of January or early February.

Reports suggest Robin van Persie has returned to training for United but is expected to miss out again this weekend. We await David Moyes’ press conference at 2pm for an official update, however.

The Newcastle press suggest Yohan Cabaye has returned to the club’s training base and will be assessed today as he attempts to overcome an Achilles injury.

All this and more has now been updated in the Team News section ahead of tomorrow’s deadline. Keep an eye on our official Twitter Stream as breaking news unfolds.

    I made a similar post to this yesterday but it only looked at sub 4.4m, I've now expanded it to sub 5.0m.

    To try and find the best sub 5.0m Midfielder I've looked at all the players under 5.0m that have played over 50% of their teams minutes this year.

    I've then sorted them in order of an average of how many points they would score over 90 minutes. To do this I divide the points by minutes played and multiply this by 90. This is just an estimate as the points have come over different matches not always a full 90 in one game but it gives an idea.

    Here's the Top 20:

    Mutch - 5.48
    Steven Davis - 4.27
    Morrison - 4.14
    Amalfitano - 4.02
    Bannan - 3.84
    Brunt - 3.75
    Bacuna - 3.73
    Redmond - 3.62
    Puncheon - 3.53
    Jarvis - 3.44
    Diamé - 3.40
    El Ahmadi - 3.38
    Livermore - 3.36
    Parker - 3.34
    Kasami - 3.29
    Howson - 3.26
    Huddlestone - 3.26
    Ward-Prowse - 3.23
    McCarthy - 3.20
    Ki Sung-Yueng - 3.17

    Highest PP90 option in each price bracket:

    5.0 = Brunt - 56% with 3.75
    4.9 = Puncheon - 68.06% with 3.53
    4.8 = Ki Sung-Yueng - 70.94% with 3.17
    4.7 = Steven David - 53.83% with 4.27
    4.6 = Mutch - 62.06% with 5.48
    4.5 = Amalfitano - 64.72% with 4.02
    4.4 = Bannan - 52.11% with 3.84
    4.3 = El Ahmadi - 69.61% with 3.38
    4.2 = Ward-Prowse - 62% with 3.23

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

    As some players have fallen out of favour and some come back in I've done this again but looking at points and minutes over the last 10 games only.

    Here's the Top 20 for those:

    Assaidi - 5.03
    Álex Pozuelo - 4.74
    Oviedo - 4.66
    Meyler - 4.56
    Parker - 4.49
    Mutch - 4.40
    Bannan - 4.39
    Puncheon - 4.33
    Steven Davis - 4.29
    Livermore - 4.18
    McCarthy - 3.95
    Mikel - 3.89
    Colback - 3.83
    Huddlestone - 3.80
    El Ahmadi - 3.70
    Morrison - 3.69
    Johnson - 3.68
    Bacuna - 3.61
    Diamé - 3.58
    Brunt - 3.51

    Highest PP90 option in each price bracket:

    5.0 = Brunt - 88.33% with 3.51
    4.9 = Puncheon - 73.89% with 4.33
    4.8 = Ki Sung-Yueng - 100% with 3.20
    4.7 = Assaidi - 63.67% with 5.03
    4.6 = Mutch - 88.67% with 4.40
    4.5 = Bacuna - 72% with 3.61
    4.4 = Parker - 89% with 4.49
    4.3 = Oviedo - 66.56% with 4.66
    4.2 = Álex Pozuelo - 54.89% with 4.74

        Not everyone has 5.1m to spend so this gives options to those people.

        Januzaj is at 5.28 over the whole season so less than Mutch and 4.40 over the last 10 so less than Assaidi, Pozuelo, Oviedo, Meyler, Parker and Mutch.

        That's not to say any of those are the better pick though as no doubt Januzaj is only going to get better and better.

      Flawed logic I'm afraid...

      You can't multiply points for playing over 69 mins by anything, as this is a binary outcome that doesn't vary beyond 60 mins and so not continuously variable.

        When looking at these cheap players it's always going to be hard to judge who is the best to pick.

        I did point out that the figures given are only estimates as those 90 minutes may come over 1 game or may come over 5.

        I still think it gives an good indication of the better picks and with only including players who have played over 50% of their teams minutes I believe the figures help somewhat.

    Twice in two days I have been the last post in a thread!

    Currently on:

    Krul

    Coleman Mert Terry Distin

    Hazard Ozil Whitt

    Rooney Suarez Lukaku

    subs: Shaw Cayabe Ravel (Lewis)

    1FT and 0.1 ITB.

    The only sensible transfer is Krul - Mannone isn't it? Unless Krul is confirmed 100% as fit.

      why dont u get mannone + marshall and have clyne in defense

      u can fund it by downgrading puncheon (the bench warmer is a bech warmer it doesnt need to be 4.9 it could be 4.3 ish)

      i just dont see southampton keeping that many cleannies with their many away matches

      Also, you talked about the possible impact of Pulis on Puncheon. I don't know if you've already figured this out but I thought I'd let you know of a nice thing to do with your new Members' status.

      Use the Comparison Tool to compare Puncheon for GW1-12 with Puncheon GW13-20 to see the impact of Pulis. Quite unequal minutes so tick the boxes underneath each for "Show averages per appearance".

      I won't reveal the results here 😉

          No worries 🙂

          It's good isn't it? You can use the same trick to compare the impact of other players (if you know stretches of gameweeks when they've played with and without eachother), or compare a player for this season against last etc etc

    Trying to get some insight on how the community works here.

    Usually I am lurking and trying to gather info to make my own decisions. Once in a while though, I'm really unsure and I'll ask a question on here. This has happened maybe 4 times since the start of the season.

    However, I've heard a lot (in general) that people say: "Help others, and they will be more inclined to answer your questions". I can understand that, but speaking for myself, I absolutely do not feel confident enough to answer the questions (this is proven by my overall rank). So while I could be giving out "advice", it may well be bad advice!

    So basically:
    Do you tend to look at who posts answers to your question, and check out their rank/history?
    And would you say it is better to not give advice, or give your opinion anyway, even though it may not be helpful at all.

      I weigh up advice basses on the reasons people give to back their opinion up. Answering a question with just A or B, I discard regardless.

      It is mostly gut instinct and what has gone one in the past. If West Ham, Palace and WBa go unbeaten from now til the end of the season and Arsenal, Citeh and Chelsea go on a losing streak then most of the advice will mean nothing in FPL terms. We are all going on what we percieve as most likely and what has been happening.

      I sometimes seek advice, but use gut instinct more. A lot of people's rank is down to a mixture of luck and judgement, but I just do not bother seeking their rank.

        i will get this one
        my advice would be just join in conversations when you want, don't worry about having an opinion most comments are just that. Just don't claim it as fact unless you can prove it.
        People will get used to seeing you post and respond as a result.
        members come in all shapes, some will take the mick, some will answer and some will never talk to you for whatever reason.
        You will get an idea what most people respond to on here and what time of day it is best to post certain types of things, such as RMT or survey type questions.
        everyone is friendly really so dont think you are getting ignored

        I tend to only give advice when I feel I have something to add (be it a better perspective on things from having seen more of a particular player than many, experience of having fallen into a trap someone is heading towards, etc.) but there's nothing wrong with giving your opinion whenever you have one. I usually just caveat anything I suggest by pointing out I'm not very good at this game 😉

        And in terms of receiving advice - I rarely seek it out but when I do I don't worry about the ranks of those giving it - some people give tremendous advice but just can't seem to apply it to their own teams!

        To answer the second part of the question when people ask for advice I think that they're seeking opinions, if you have one then nothing wrong with giving it. The whole point is that there is debate over the best courses of action. The game is based on statistics and the probability of certain players performing in a game of very high variance so there are not many black and white answers.

        I guess the concensus is that the most important thing is becking up your advice, be it with evidence or just plain (logic) reasoning.

        Additional question: does anyone of you actually even recognise me from my 0.05 posts/day? 😀

                In my opinion (caveat, caveat 😉 ) the most important thing if you want to be valued when giving/seeking advice is to be courteous and helpful in your manner. You seem to have that one down so I suspect you'll be fine 🙂

                Recognise the grav? No, the name seems familiar though - probably just unusual enough to lodge at the back of my head somewhere!

                      Albert Luque and Coloccini spring to mind as transfers to Newcastle. And Xisco, but that was no success, iirc.

                        Yup. Coloccini's the only one who worked out - Xisco was a joke (the manager didn't want him), Luque couldn't get fit. We also loaned Helder briefly but that was probably 10 years ago now.

                        At least Luque and Helder both scored against Sunderland! 🙂

                    every opinion is valid so just say what you feel, you can include facts if you like but there are lots of people do that for us already, plus members page offers that kind of stuff if you like.
                    you can also play to people's vanity by agreeing with them a few times and then they tend to like you.

                Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

                Unlikely season saviours

                In the 2011/12 season all looked lost for me after the first few weeks. I’d missed the bandwagons at the time. But about five weeks in I took a punt on Matt Jarvis from Wolves. He racked up 14 pts in the first week I had him and went on to rack up more assists and goals over a run that saved my season. By the time everyone else got him in, his points had dried up and I'd moved on.

                Which unlikely heroes have saved your season?

                  Steven Pienaar 11/12 season

                  January purchases for the team, almost no ownership and propelled me up in my MLs

                  Theo helped turn mine around this season, I had him for all his point hauls and captained him twice which helped me make up some lost ground.

                  I'm hoping someone new comes in this window I can take a punt on!

                  Brady helped me out this season, I got him in weeks 5 and 6 and Walcott got injured so I had 23 points off the bench. Then I sold him the week after and his points dried up. I wish it worked like that all the time!

                  In a my ML a couple of seasons ago, someone took a punt on Maxi, who then went and scored a couple of hat tricks for Liverpool and racked up a bunch of other points, he overtook me and about four other people.

                  Evans last season did me well, no one else in my ML would go near him.

                  Good daily topic. Upvoted.

                  I had both Cisse and Jelavic after they joined in January one season and they saved what was a crap season up until that point.

                  In 2010/11 I wasn't having a bad season that needed saving as such but bringing in Charles N'Zogbia at Wigan for the run-in at the end of that season propelled me to 14th in FPL. I think he scored 5 or 6 goals in the last few games, a memorable brace to sink West Ham included, and coming from a relegation threatened side he was something of a differential. I also had Demba Ba during that run-in and he was great too.

                  Hmmm, might have to consider some more attacking players from relegation threatened sides this season.

                  In a reversedw way, Demba Ba last season. I had him for the first half in my mini league, when no one else did. Solda him as soon says he went to Chelsea (thinking he wouldn't get as much game time) whereas everyone in my mini league out him in, stating Chelsea would provide him with greater goals scoring opportunities.

                  After that, most held onto him for longer then they should have, meaning I caught up ground.

                  I know it's not the conventional answer to the question, but it did save my season.

                  B, assuming injury hasn't made an averse impact on either of them. A would be safest for the next couple of weeks, which is what I'm doing as I'm on a WC, but I expect many people on here will end up with B. I've saved the cash for Negredo -> Aguero.

                      I wouldn't expect a lot of assits or goals from him. Over a entire season I'd say he's good for 2 goals + 5 assits or so. I'm from Norway.

                Nasti: how nailed is he for every gw, so as to pik him up for WC team?

                seems only Kompany is the only one nailed on every gw presumably.

                But Nasty would have to split minutes w/ Demichelis and/or Lescott? or maybe Demichelis will be saved for Chamipns League...
