Our trawl through the press conferences and post-match reports returns as we fish for fresh, tasty sound bites. This week, Tim Sherwood talks tactics, David Moyes discusses Adnan Januzaj’s game time, Brendan Rodgers lifts the lid on Steven Gerrard’s new role, Arsene Wenger discusses his midfield options, whilst new managers Gunnar Solskjaer and Rene Meulensteen also have their say:

After his captain’s deepest average position of the season, Brendan Rogers addressed veteran midfielder Steven Gerrard’s new position in the first team. Gerrard has racked up fantasy points (87, or 5.1 ppg) in typical fashion despite missing several games though injury. Fantasy owners need not be overly concerned by his repositioning, with much of his attacking threat this season coming by way of set pieces – but, at 8.8, Gerrard remains Liverpool’s most expensive midfielder. Budget-friendly Jordan Henderson (6.4) and Raheem Sterling (5.3) both played the full 90, in spite of Daniel Sturridge’s return to action. Both sit on 3.4 ppg, meaning the case for Gerrard remains.

“He fits the profile of that controlling role. In the period out [with a hamstring injury], we had real success with a player in the controlling role and two guys pressing and playing in the central corridor. I just feel that the position is perfect for Steven. Firstly, he has the personality to play it. When you play in that controlling role, you need someone who can get on the ball. He gives us great variety in his passing. You saw it a couple of times today, he’d pick it up from deep, make a short pass and open the game up for us and he stretched the game with his vision and quality. I’ve spoken to him a lot on the subject and I think it was just about the timing really of when to play him in the role”
Brendan Rogers confirms Steven Gerrard’s future role for Liverpool.

Arsene Wenger revealed, somewhat surprisingly, his ambitions for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. With Theo Walcott forced out through injury, many managers may have earmarked Chamberlain (6.7) as a cut-price replacement but it appears Wenger has other ideas for his progression into the side. This could signal the mouth watering prospect of a 4.2-priced advanced midfield option in the Arsenal’s front line….

“At the moment he is still in formation. It is good for his education as he plays left, right and centrally when needed. After [the age of] 23 or 24 you settle in a definite position. He will be deeper as he has a good long ball, penetration from deep and a good quality to distribute and penetrate individually. Certainly he has the same qualities to Steven Gerrard. He is a bit of a Ramsey type.”
Arsene Wenger on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s positional prospects.

Wenger’s comments on Serge Gnabry look set to tempt Fantasy managers as they prepare for the return of a highly popular, budget-stretching Argentine up top. Selecting the exceptionally cheap young German looks a great punt, but a quick word of caution – with Arsenal looking primed for investment, a non-playing 4.2-priced midfielder could prove hard to shift for managers looking to accommodate a third Arsenal starter if Gnabry fails to get regular first team action.

“He has a lot in the locker… We are looking at a guy who has great pace, good individual talent, can pass people, is a good finisher who can finish right and left as he is two-footed, and he has a very good football brain, with good vision.”
Arsene Wenger talks up Serge Gnabry’s great potential.

Cardiff City’s new manager Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer explains his central defensive selection headache. The ‘baby-faced assassin’ took the sword to the usual back four by handing Mark Hudson a start – first in the midweek cup tie and then again in the league, as forum-favourite Ben Turner was forced to the bench. Budget-friendly Turner (4.2) had played every minute of the season before this weekend’s defeat by the Hammers but, with Hudson ousting the formerly ever-present EnglishmAn from Cardiff’s starting XI, doubts remain over the first-choice partner for captain Caulker.

“Mark has been on the bench all year but he was brilliant up at Newcastle, he was absolutely outstanding when Steven had to miss the game with a few knocks. So I opted for him and I thought Mark did really well. Ben has done nothing wrong all year. So I’ve got three good centre-backs there and we’ll need the depth of the squad.”
Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer on Ben Turner’s recent absence from the starting XI.

Having started his tenure with a 4-4-2 formation, Spurs boss Tim Sherwood hinted at a possible change to accommodate more of the club’s summer signings. Spurs have won four out of their five league matches under the new manager but face mixed fortunes, hosting both Man City and Everton and facing three away fixtures in the next five. Fantasy owners of Christian Eriksen (7.3m), won’t be too concerned, given the Dane’s superb average of 7.2 points per game under the new leadership, though the likes of Roberto Soldado may have reason to worry if Sherwood reverts to one up front, given the recent impact of Emmanuel Adebayor.

“We’ve got Nacer Chadli – for me his best position is going to be off the front – and Erik Lamela. I think he will play in the hole behind the main striker. These boys are halfway through the settling-in period so I don’t want to bring somebody else in and knock them back. We will crack on with what we have got – and I believe in them. I believe they can do a job and we will change the way we play, maybe. I’m looking for a change of style, possibly, to freshen it up – and we have the options within the squad already.”
Tim Sherwood on a potential shift in style and personnel in Spurs’ starting XI.

Eden Hazard’s match-winning contribution against a resilient Hull City at the weekend prompted calls from Jose Mourinho, to award his star player’s form with a player of the month trophy. Fantasy owners will, no doubt, empathise after the young Belgian’s performance was rewarded with no Fantasy Premier League (FPL) Bonus Points, but there is cause for optimism amid the frustration. At 10.6 Hazard is the FPL’s stand-out midfielder – most expensive, most points and comfortably top of the ICT rankings. Having played a key role in the victory against Liverpool, Hazard now appears focussed on taking the responsibility of changing games ahead of a tricky tie against reigning champions Manchester United.

“He is playing very well for a long time. He is more than just a talented kid now. He feels and accepts the responsibility, accepts that a team player is more than a talented player. Without losing his fantastic ability he is giving us other things. Let’s see if the Barclays Premier League decide to give him a player of the month, because the kid is waiting and the trophy is not arriving. Maybe they don’t like to go to Cobham!”
Jose Mourinho talks up Eden Hazard’s consistency as Chelsea’s star turn.

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet moved to reinforce his prematch comments on Adam Johnson’s ‘match winner’ potential following his FPL player-of-the-week performance against Meulensteen’s beleaguered Fulham. His comments suggest that Johnson is now central to the teams attacking play and it would appear a shrewd move from the new manager. His remarkable performance banked 22 fantasy points, exactly one third of his total points tally and 75% of his seasons goals in a rampant 90 minutes at Craven Cottage. Sunderland play host in three of their next four fixtures (SOT, STO, new, Hull) – a favourable-looking run for the 6.4-priced winger.

“Johnno today, he would make the difference at any level. We were looking to get that style of play for him to take advantage and make the difference. Johnno needs to play for a team that keeps the ball, gives him the ball at the right time, gives him the space to break. We were trying, it wasn’t easy at first, but in the last two or three weeks when we’ve been passing better and the team has been more solid, that’s given him the freedom to perform.”
Gus Poyet on Adam Johnson’s ‘key player’ status at Sunderland.

Fantasy favourite, David Moyes – whose comments are typically shrouded in mystery – took time to elaborate on Man United starlet Adnan Januzaj’s increasingly obvious talent, after deploying him in a central role behind Danny Welbeck. Though the 5.2-priced youngster failed to register any significant FPL return, he is already the champions’ highest-scoring midfielder with 54 points. His out-of-position prospects may quickly diminish, with the potential return of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, but Moyes’ public recognition of Adnan’s versatility should serve managers with encouragement.

“Adnan can play in all the positions around the front. I speak to him a lot and he tells me he could play everywhere and he would have no problem. He’s not a nervous boy. I wanted to see if it would give us any more creativity, any more [attacking] positions, and help us. He needs teaching and understanding because he is still learning the game in a lot of the things he is doing. But his talent and natural ability is up there with the best and I think, in time, he will prove to be that.”
David Moyes on Adnan Januzaj’s versatility for Manchester Utd.

Fans of the west London side and their Fantasy investors need look no further than the January reunion of a formerly lucrative Fantasy combination – Clint Dempsey and a Fulham FC jersey. Meulensteen has been quick to acknowledge his loanee’s value to the club and we’d expect to see the 7.4-priced American back in the points soon. Dempsey delivered triple-figure hauls in six of his seven seasons in the Premier League and his final season at the club (2011/12) harvested an astonishing 209 points. This season’s 7-7.5 midfield price-bracket is packed with talent – Ramsay, Lallana, Eriksen and Cabaye attracting strong investment – but if Dempsey rediscovers his devastating form, he’ll make for a wonderful differential.

“Clint’s a fit boy and that comes pretty quickly… the more minutes and games he gets under his belt the quicker that will all come. It won’t take long for him to be right back up there… He’s just got to keep working, but that’s his character and that’s exactly what we know he will do.”
Rene Meulensteen, buoyed by the return of former Fulham favourite, on Clint Dempsey.

Can the new feature 'scorecard' be a live automated feature during matches. So basically you don't need to keep pressing f5 and all the FPL info just upupdates itself. Just want to know as this will be helpful rather than checking on FPL and TFPL

With home fixtures against: CAR, CHE, SUN, STK, AVL, FUL, SOT, WBA, WHM - Most are going with a city defender, Silva/Yaya and Aguer but to you see a double up in defence as an alternative to Silva? Zabaleta & Kolarov have 10 assists between them and with the fixtures, should get a lot of cleansheets.

The benefit is also you can bench one defender away from home and play 2 City players, whereas if you have Silva, he is unbenchable.

Plan is to have a Evans, so when City are away, Evans comes in for a home fixture. Same goes for Januzaj, switching from 4-3-3 to 3-4-3.

"Most" are going with a city defender? Not seen many WC teams with a city defender it's usually:

Baines or Coleman, Mert or Kos, Ward, Chester, Clyne

As the big teams are tightening up defensively, I would be keen to hear their points of view on the difficult decision between expensive nailed on players i.e. Terry, Kompany, Evra, Mert compared with the cheaper options i.e. Azpi, Kolorov, Evans, Kos? Especially when trying to Wildcard.

Is the 'injury assessment' feature from last season coming back? I cannot remember the exact name of it, but I remember it was a sports physiotherapist tried their best to assess a player's current injury and when we could roughly expect them to be back. It really was a very insightful feature and personally I found it very useful!

Seems like Spurs is finding its scoring form and we do not yet have a nailed on midfielder from Arsenal in terms of consistency since departure of Walcott.

What is the best way to cover attacking assets from both teams? In my opinion, one midfielder or forward has to be in my team. So what duo should it be?

      Ozil + Adebayor
      OR
      Eriksen + Giroud

The thing is, both Eriksen and Adebayor are pretty good, but having them both in the team can be a bit of an overkill. Confusions come into play when Ozil vs Giroud comparison is made, as Ozil has been giving blanks recently and mocking his price, while Giroud has just found his boots and gives no further guarantee of consistency, but he has the fixtures which will allow him to produce massive points if he plays in a way which is not "shitty".

So which duo to choose? DAMN!

No questions, but for this week and a few others in the series I'd like to start differently from 'Hello there, you're listening to another podcast from http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk, my name's Mark...' and instead let Granville start with a football chant. I propose the 'Jip Jaap Stam' one for this week. He should know the words.

What do they think of the idea of replacing the Main and January Wildcards with First Half-season and Second Half-season Wildcards? (I would prefer to only have one wildcard, but I don't expect FPL Towers would be willing to do that.)

What's gone wrong with Protection? It looks as if players whose flag changes from red to green might get 10 days protection, but that players whose flag changes from red to yellow, and then to green 3 days later do not even get 10-3=7 days protection. Is this really what FPL intends to happen, do they need to change their rules, or is it a bug in their program?

And how many flag and protection problems are caused by David Moyes's vague or misleading pronouncements, which appeared to prevent RVP's price dropping despite massive sales earlier this season?

I've now seen a suggestion that thresholds have been doubled and protection abandoned for the duration of the January Wildcard. If that is correct then it might explain everything!

What effect is Cortese's departure likely to have on Southampton? How long before Pochettino goes too?

Will Assem Allam quit if he doesn't get his own way with changing his team's name to Hull Tigers, and what effect would it have if he leaves?

And can Ole Gunnar Solskjaer form a successful partnership with Vincent Tan, or will he be forced to only sign players born on 8.8.88?

Does playing fantasy football prevent you from being able to relax and enjoy Premier League matches for their own sake? (I can barely remember what it was like to watch football without anxiously monitoring my/my rivals' players. Even when it's the FA Cup, etc. I'm still painfully aware of any possible injuries/suspensions.)

Do you think you'll ever reach a point in your lives when you stop playing fantasy football?

      Hi Jonty

Can Mark / Granville clarify whether it's technically possible for a player to rise more than 0.3m in a gameweek?

For example, a player drops 0.3m at the start of the GW.

Then you buy him and for some miraculous reason NTI suddenly sky rocket and the player goes from -0.3m to +0.3m, e.g. over an international break.

Does this mean a 0.6m rise that GW or just a 0.3m rise, (i.e. would you only start getting the benefit once the player goes into the positive).

I've had some mixed responses to this question.

      Cheers

First of all, apologies for the length of this post and it's format, it looked really bunched together without the spacing.

Question: what are the changes you'd would like to see in next seasons game? For example:

      1) A role for the defensive midfielder, i.e both attacking at defensive slots in midfield?

      2) Changes in bonus points, amounts of points relating to a goal/assist/clean sheet?

      3) Goalkeepers rewarded differently, place more value in saves/clean sheets?

      4) Differing amounts of slots? 6 midfielders? 4 strikers? Buy an extra slot for say -30 points?

      5) 50% points awarded to bench players, encourage a squad game?

      6) The ability to 'buy' out your Saturday captain, -5 points to swap to another captain for the Saturday evening/Sunday/Monday games?

      7) Similar to point 2, but changes to points scored by position? e.g a defender could score 4 points for an assist, a goalkeeper 10 points for a goal?

      8) Should fullbacks also have a separate classification if the current bonus system is to remain?

      9) Free transfers continually rolling over, not just a limit of 2?

      10) Manager points? Points awarded for a substitute scoring?

      11) Players on as subs get more points per goal/assist?

      12) Extra bonus for a player scoring a hattrick/hattrick of assists, say +5?

      13) Man of the match points?

      14) Extra points for a match winning goal when the game is won by a one goal margin?

      15) Start the game with a pot of free transfers (say 3-5) separate to wildcard for a differing tactical element?

Now some of these seem ludicrous perhaps, I'm also aware Mark has touched on certain potential viable changes in the past, just wondered if anything here could provoke discussion. If any idea is any good perhaps the community could all e-mail FPL towers or something.

    Would appreciate some more perspectives...

Current WC team. £0.5m free to improve depth.

Ranked in the top 1k, so not taking big risks.

    Mannone (Davis @ 3.9m)
    Coleman. Sagna. Martesacker. (Chester @ 3.9m. Whittaker @ 3.9m.)
Silva. Hazard. Yaya. Eriksen. (Johnson @ 4.1m)
    Suarez. Aguero. Sturridge.

    Thoughts on:

Silva to Lallana and Sagna to Baines?

    Would leave me £0.3m free.

    Thanks

        thanks for your response mate.

i'd not want double "passive" everton defence.

but i see those two as attacking defenders, ie not fully reliant on clean sheets, capable of picking up bps, etc...

.3 short on davis to marshall. i actually like boruc and had him and davis for the first half of the season.

            boruc swap would give me:

            guaranteed 90 mins
            (cheap double cover)
            good fixtures.

          yes. pretty strong arguement.

silva is class, better than lallana. but that gives me 3 attacking city players (good?)

baines / colemen are almost like having another couple of mids, albeit with a different scoring profile.

and having both is a differential.

My advice is to look back over your GW history and see how often your 8th attacker comes off the bench. It's a lot more than you think. Someone coming off there with 0 points is useless.

                    tbh, that's a possibilty mate!

i also have a higher than normal risk profile, by using hits (33 transfers so far this year).

but i'm ranked in the top 1k, so it seems to be more or less working.

      1) Baines and Coleman is an excellent combination. I wouldn't be put off this by anyone.
      2) Lallana is looking better and better each GW, definitely worth your consideration.

Here is what i think about those moves.

Silva and Sagna are both home in very favourable conditions while Everton and Saints both travel this GW

NEXT GW, Everton have a derby against in form Liverpool, Saints host Arsenal. City travel to Spurs. None of them have particularly great fixtures.

Why not stick, save next weeks FT and do it for the week after depending on injury news etc.

The latest on the Southampton saga, for those of you keeping up on the day's gossip. Earlier I posted about Cortese's supposed resignation/break down in relationship with the owner. SSN since reported that he had submitted a written resignation. Now Southampton's local daily, The Daily Echo, is denying such reports, though they do admit that the relationship between owner and chairman may be beyond repair:

was going to put this is the scoutcast question section but i want to give my own answer!

2 theories i've seen crop up, giroud without walcott, and ramsey without walcott.
i personally think both are myth/coincidence. i think giroud hit a slump which would have been so with or without walcott playing, whilst ramsey stopped scoring simply because it's abnormal for centre mids to score 30 goals a season

My arsenal defence double up killed me last week but it could work well against Fulham.

    Mign (Mannone)
    Coleman. Sagna. Kosc. (Ward, chester)
    Silva. Hazard. Sterling, Ozil (Janu)
    Suarez. Ade, Lukaku
    £1.2m

Suarez brace guaranteed. Thats at least 26 points to get us going. City will score at least 4. If you own 2 or 3 of Silva Yaya Navas Aguero Negrado you're golden. Arsenal may struggle against Fulham. I reckon 2-0 but another 9 pointer for Giroud. All in all 70's-80's GW

The implications of a Cortese/Pochettino departure for FPL managers:

I've seen a few people discussing not investing in Lallana as a result of these rumours. Those on a WC have suggested potentially going for other mid-priced options such as Eriksen or Cabaye who don't have these club issues to deal with. But IMO, it's those with Boruc/Shaw/Clyne/Lovren/Fonte that have most to worry about.

What Pochettino bought to the Premier League was a high pressing game, with tough tackling across the pitch. Subsequently, with a fit squad at the beginning of the season, our CS were the foundations of our success. Take away that high-pressing game in return for a more conventional philosophy and it may be the CSs that go down the pan.

Our fluidity across the attacking midfield positions probably isn't so unusual. For example, Chelsea play a similar system, with 3 attacking midfielders supporting the lone striker (whoever Mourinho seems to fancy on any given day). We played the same system with Lallana/JRod/X (X depended on selection) behind Lambert. An in form player like Lallana may be more resistant to the changes as the attacking approach may be similar under new management.

In May, when Cortese was first rumoured to be leaving, Pochettino pretty much said he'd follow him out of the door out of loyalty. I don't know if that's the same now but I would expect so. Pochettino and Cortese have had a very good relationship and they have a past that extends beyond Southampton, according to Pochettino.

SSN seemed to imply it was a done deal and he was gone. Very sad.

BUT in the last hour, there's been a retreat and the local papers are reporting that he hasn't actually resigned but the relationship between owner and Cortese is irrevocably broken.

            http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/saints/news/10938125._/

So everything I've written above is definitely not for certain and all based on rumour. No one should shift Saints players on until we have more definite news. Just thought I'd address some of the worries this weeks WCers were having.

There is an assumption that if one goes the other will follow. I'm not certain this is the case despite of any previous statements, they are not joined at the hip. Furthermore should both head for the exit door it is impossible to predict what impact it would have on the club in terms of pitch performance, I doubt a new manager would be employed with a view to adapting a new style of play, if anything one would be sought who has the qualities to build on what already exists there.
