Scout Notes – Gameweek 36 – Sunday

Yaya Toure grabs a goal and assist upon his return from a groin injury as City end Palace’s winning run. A much-changed Chelsea blow the title race wide open with a resilient rearguard display at Anfield, whilst Connor Wickham bags a brace as Sunderland sweep aside Cardiff to climb out of the bottom three:

Toure Back in the Points
The Ivorian played a part in both City’s goals as Manuel Pellegrini’s side eased past Palace at Selhurst Park. Sold by over 500, 000 Fantasy Premier League managers after limping out of the first match of City’s double Gameweek 34, Toure’s immediate impact in yesterday’s vital win is set to get the bandwagon back underway ahead of next week’s pair of fixtures. Now down to 10.1, he faces Everton and Villa before a final day home encounter with West Ham, and with City’s bid for the title now firmly back in their own hands, we can expect Pellegrini to go on the attack as he looks to overhaul Liverpool at the summit.

Samir Nasri also chipped in with an assist to keep his tally ticking over. The Frenchman now has two goals and four assists in his last eight, but despite his consistent displays, some owners may still be eyeing up a swap for Toure – the latter’s 31-point haul in double Gameweek 31 is a reminder of his capabilities, whilst Nasri, by comparison, has managed just two sets of double figures all season.

Pellegrini Keeps Faith in a 4-4-2
Manuel Pellegrini continued with a two-man frontline for the trip to Selhurst Park as City ended the hosts’ five-match winning run. Edin Dzeko was handed the chance to partner Sergio Aguero once again, and whilst the latter drew a rare blank before being withdrawn on 78 minutes, the Bosnian justified his manager’s decision by scoring for the first time in four appearances. With Alvaro Negredo still struggling for form, Dzeko has now started each of the last two alongside Aguero and seems likely to retain his start for the double – priced at just 7.1, his 15% of owners may be persuaded to hold after yesterday’s impressive showing, though there’s no doubt Aguero and Toure will be the two main names on shopping lists this week.

Wickham the Black Cats’ Talisman
A brace from Connor Wickham took his tally to five goals in the last three Gameweeks as Sunderland’s great escape picked up pace. With an assist and maximum bonus also accrued in the 4-0 win over Cardiff, Wickham has now delivered 37 points in his last trio of appearances, and with a price tag of just 4.6, his exploits look certain to earn him plenty of new owners before next weekend’s double Gameweek deadline. Granted, the weekend trip to United is far from straightforward, but with a midweek home clash against West Brom and a Stadium of Light showdown against Swansea on the final day of the season, Wickham looks likely to play a major part in the last few fixtures for Gus Poyet’s side.

Borini and Giaccherini also in the Points
The Italian duo both chipped in with a goal and assist apiece in the rout. Borini benefitted from penalty duties for the second match in succession, having also slotted home a spot-kick in the win at Chelsea – priced at 6.2 and fielded on the left, though, he remains less likely to pick up new owners due to Wickham’s cheaper price tag and central role. Giaccherini’s contribution off the bench may be somewhat disconcerting for Adam Johnson owners ahead of the double, however. The latter served up a fifth successive blank yesterday, whilst Giacherrini has now produced a goal and three assists in three brief sub appearances – his displays may just persuade Poyet he is worthy of a starting berth, given Johnson’s comparative lack of form.

Bardsley on the Bench
Suspended for the previous two matches, the Black Cats full-back seems to have fallen down the pecking order after being handed a spot on the bench yesterday. Poyet opted for an unchanged defence and retained Santiago Vergini on the right of the back-four as Sunderland earned a first clean sheet since Gameweek 30. With an average of 4.6 points per game, Vito Mannone remains the best bet for those looking to invest in the Black Cats’ backline ahead of the double, though Marcos Alonso’s attacking threat is also an option – the 4.5-priced Spaniard looks the likeliest defender to deliver the points in light of Bardsley’s omission.

Jose Rings the Changes as Blues Shock Anfield
Earlier in the week, the Chelsea boss threatened to make sweeping changes to his starting XI for yesterday’s clash, and he was true to his word. With the second leg of the Champions League semi-final clash against Atletico Madrid now only two days away, Jose Mourinho made seven alterations to his line-up, drafting in previously peripheral figures such as Tomas Kalas, John Obi-Mikel and Ashley Cole in a 4-3-3 formation. Despite the loss of Petr Cech and John Terry to injury, Mourinho dropped Gary Cahill to the bench yet still managed to defy the odds with a counter-attacking masterclass as Chelsea served up their seventeenth shut-out of the season. Those holding the Blues main assets will be somewhat worried by yesterday’s line-up, though – if the London club progress to the Champions League Final, Mourinho – whose side now see out the season with games against Norwich and Cardiff – could well be set to continue with his rotation policy in light of yesterday’s success.

Liverpool Stutter as Sturridge Returns
The Reds’ 11-match winning streak came crashing to an end as Luis Suarez and co failed to break down the Chelsea defensive wall. Cahill’s late introduction saw Mourinho switch to a five-man backline, and with no way through, Liverpool’s title chances were dealt a huge blow as Demba Ba and former Brendan Rodgers target Willian grabbed the goals. Daniel Sturridge was fit enough only for a second-half sub role after a recovering from a recent hamstring problem and the England star looks likely to return to the starting line-up for next weekend’s crucial trip to Selhurst Park – a move to the midfield diamond looks on the cards as the Merseysiders attempt to re-establish their position at the summit after yesterday’s morale-sapping display.

Perhaps its just me but i don't think he's saying anything thats untrue, nor is he criticising Chelsea.

I do think he is entitled to feel a little frustrated, particularly as Jose hates it when the lower teams play that way against him.

You are probably right but i do think the onus was on liverpool to break them down since they were at home and are top of the league.

    Aguero - Suarez - Rooney

How many are thinking about reuniting the SAS for GW38? Expected Liverpool to steamroll Newcastle even if the title was already confirmed, but if the whole thing is likely to go down to GD it could get messy. Suarez (c), Sturridge, Sterling for me.

It took a lot for Ba to be there in the right time to poach the ball, run through on goal and slot the ball away. Their game-plan was to sit back and wait for Liverpool to leave gaps at the back or pick up the ball high up the pitch and quickly attack and they did that. It's not pretty, but they did what they set out to do

    Ideas on this lot?

    Mannone / Boruc
    Coleman / Chambers / Ward / Olsson / Ivanovic
Mata / Ramsey / Noone / Eriksen / Yaya Touré
    Suárez / Agüero / Rooney

1 FT, £0.7m in the bank.

Anything look obvious? Willing to spend -8 at worst.

      Mannone
      Terry Collins Baines
      Yaya Ramsey Eriksen Hazard Cabaye
      Suarez Sturridge

Each of these have pulled out incredible points hauls for me to ensure I haven't had a single bad gameweek this season. Yes, even Collins - with his incredible 15 point haul in the first week I owned him. And the same for Cabaye - his short time with me ensured I had a great winter.

        Not necessarily.
Terry could have easily been replaced by Azpi or Ivanovic. Gerrard was consistent but hasn't quite had the essential status that Ozil or Rambo have and Howard's often been a poor pick if it meant you had to use one of your three everton places (ciompeting with Baines Mirallas and Lukaku). I'm also unsure of Rooney as consistency hasn't been a strong point of his, trying to get him in at the right times has often been difficult this season.

Boruc and Clyne combo served me so many points at the start of the season. Ward as well, had them three from GW 1 and it was a joy. Giroud deserve a mention for bagging the points early in the game.

Before we vote for the actual players in our FFS Team of the Year, can we please have a poll to choose the team formation? I would vote for 3-4-3 in preference to 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 3-5-2 etc.

I posted a team similar to the following 3 days ago but no-one replied. Amazing what a difference it makes being a daily hot topic - and perhaps also being more relevant now that the PFA team of the year has been announced!

      Mannone
      Baines - Coleman - Terry
      Yaya - Ramsey - Hazard - Gerrard
      Suarez - Aguero - Rooney

Bench: Boruc - Cahill - Mata - Sturridge

Can anyone remember the team we voted for last season?

I am pretty sick and tired of teams that whine about how Chelsea play. I have never, ever, watched us draw or lose a game to a team that defended for their lives and say “Why did they not attack?” Usually only get angry at our players and say “Why didn’t you score?” If someone doesn’t like a defensive strategy because it’s not entertaining or effective… fine. But opponents whining about how the team they’re facing isn’t playing in a manner that ensures their victory… that’s sour grapes.

Football is played in a million ways - defensive, offensive, wing-play, tiki taka, possession, etc… You beat whoever is in front of you. When we failed to beat Sunderland, West Ham, WBA etc… I don’t moan about them, but about our inability to score.

If a team defends heavily, you just attack even more and smash through them. No team is impenetrable. You failed if you didn’t score…come on Brendan, get over it.

Can't help but think selling Mata has cost us the title. His ability to break down defences, remain calm and control possession against simple opponents could have made the difference. No rush to sell him, but I guess the money was good.

Don't agree. I would have played him in no 10 role instead of Oscar, but so be it. I think lack of striker, maybe not loaning Lukaka? We have midfielders.... I think Jose thought Juan will take of pts from Liv and City. United and Moyes lost with 3 penalties. That is the key IMO

As a Liverpool fan I agree with this. We played poorly, and Chelsea executed a boring yet effective gameplan.

What I don't understand was why we played so attacking. A draw would have put us in a fantastic position to win the league. If Chelsea wanted to play so defensively, we should have played defensively too. Sure, would have been a boring game, but would have likely won us the league.

When you're pressing so high up the pitch that a midfielder is your furthest back player, you're playing too attacking if you don't need to win.

Here's the proof of my prediction, for what it's worth. I am not trying to brag. It just seemed like the most likely scenario to me, and I think Rodgers and Company didn't set up the best to stop it all from happening. http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2014/04/26/the-scoreboard-gameweek-36-saturday/?hc_page=22#hc_comment_7241131

Really want Yaya in so which would you rather do:

    A) Lallana + Zabaleta > Yaya + 4.0m (probably Baker?)

    B) Lallana + Suarez > Yaya + 10.4m forward (Giroud/Wickham :shock:/ other?)

    Cheers

Woke at 2.15 last night having forgotten to do my Gerrard/Distin --> Mata/Demi (-4)

In my semi conscious state I panicked over not having Yaya and did Gerrard/Eriksen/Ivanovic --> Yaya/Mata/Baker 😯 (-8)

Think it'll pay off or did I make a big mistake?

    B.) (-8)
    Koscielny, Chester, Yaya

I feel so sorry for Gerrard after that.. Same way I felt sorry for Terry when he slipped in the CL final, you just don't like to see someone make such a costly mistake, something as simple as keeping your footing like.. Shame the pinnacle of his career might all be decided on that one moment (think he wants the PL more than the CL).
