Scout Scribbles – Mourinho’s Men Slip to Defeat

Chelsea’s Champions League dream is ended by La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid. Tottenham’s Andros Townsend is ruled out for over two months with ankle ligament damage, Gareth McAuley looks on course to return in time for West Brom’s double Gameweek, whilst Joseph Yobo is available for Norwich again as the Canaries attempt to drag themselves out of the drop zone:

CHELSEA CRASH OUT OF EUROPE

Despite welcoming captain John Terry and Eden Hazard back into the starting line-up for last night’s Champions League semi-final second leg, Jose Mourinho could do nothing to stop his side slipping to defeat against Atletico Madrid. The Chelsea boss made five changes from his side’s vital victory over Liverpool on Sunday, with Fernando Torres chosen to spearhead the team against his old side and Cesar Azpilicueta unexpectedly fielded on the right of the attacking three alongside Willian and the returning Eden Hazard. Torres grabbed the opening goal of the game courtesy of a cut back from Azpilicueta, but it was the Blues’ defence that let them down on night as they conceded three goals at home for the first time this season.

The Scout Says: With the momentum from their tactical masterclass over Liverpool still fresh in everyone’s minds, many believed that Mourinho’s men had it in them to reach the Champions League final last night. With their European dreams now over, the north London outfit only have two remaining games this campaign; they welcome Norwich this weekend before visiting Cardiff on the final day of the season as they look to defy the odds and climb above Manchester City and Liverpool to the summit of the table. Azpilicueta’s owners will be intrigued by his performance last night, as Mourinho opted to the play the 5.7-priced defender in his attacking three ahead of the likes of Andre Schurrle and Oscar, though the Spaniard returned to his normal left back position when the former was introduced for Ashley Cole in the second half. Whilst Azpilicueta’s owners will be intrigued by last night’s switch of position, it seems more likely that Mourinho will turn to his more attack-minded players for the last two league games, given just how porous both opponents’ defences have been this season – Hazard’s return to the XI may well persuade some to re-invest in the Belgian, with his price dropping from 11.2 to 10.3 in recent weeks. A further point of note from last night’s match is that for the first time in three seasons, we won’t have a double Gameweek 1 to get us underway when the 2014/15 campaign kicks off in August –the Blues’ participation in the European Super Cup in the past two years has previously forced a Premier League reschedule.

TOWNSEND OUT OF WORLD CUP

Tottenham midfielder Andros Townsend has been ruled out for up to ten weeks after it was announced that he will undergo surgery on an ankle problem later today. The England international picked up the injury against Stoke on Saturday and further scans on the complaint have confirmed that the ligament damage sustained will require surgery.

The Scout Says: A devastating blow for the young winger, who exploded onto the World Cup and Fantasy football stage earlier this season following an incredible debut in an England shirt swiftly followed by a first Premier League goal of the season back in Gameweek 8. Injury has since curtailed Townsend’s potential, with the Spurs man mainly reduced to substitute appearances since Gameweek 11 and devoid of attacking returns since that early-season strike, but there is no doubt he would still have been harbouring hopes of a seat on the plane to Brazil. The midfielder’s absence for the remainder of the campaign should see Cristian Eriksen and Aaron Lennon’s starting berths on the wings guaranteed for Spurs’ final two fixtures, with Tim Sherwood’s side travelling to West Ham this weekend before hosting Villa on the final day of the season.

YOBO BACK FOR RELEGATION SCRAP

Joseph Yobo has declared himself fit for Norwich’s two vital remaining Premier League games of the season. The on-loan centre-half has been sidelined since the Canaries loss to West Brom at the start of April with a calf injury, but has been given the all-clear for the visit of Chelsea on Sunday.

The Scout Says: Three clean sheets in eight appearances since his loan move from Fenerbahce in January had seen Yobo offer a viable route into the Canaries’ backline until his recently injury problems. A weekend return for the 3.9-priced defender will put the starting berths of Russell Martin and Michael Turner under considerable pressure, as Neil Adams will be desperate to keep his defence tight for Sunday’s match with Chelsea and next weekend’s trip to Arsenal in his hunt for Premier League survival.

MCAULEY BACK IN TIME FOR DOUBLE

Gareth McAuley is expected to recover from a calf complaint in time for West Brom’s trip to Arsenal this weekend. Teammate Steven Reid is rated ‘50/50’ for the Emirates trip after being withdrawn before half time against West Ham last Saturday with a groin problem, whilst Zoltan Gera and Liam Ridgewell are unlikely to recover from knee and hamstring injuries respectively for Sunday’s game, but could do in time for the Baggies’ trip to Sunderland next Wednesday.

The Scout Says: It is hardly surprising that West Brom’s defensive assets aren’t earning all that much attention ahead of their impending double Gameweek, certainly compared to the likes of the two Manchester clubs. Nonetheless, managers should note that the Baggies have managed two clean sheets in their last four games, and though another against the Gunners looks unlikely, a shut-out against Sunderland is a viable prospect, especially if the 5.1-priced McAuley is indeed fit to partner Jonas Olsson at the back. With a home game against Stoke to come on the final day of the season, once the double is out of the way, the Baggies’ rearguard might just tempt a few more investors before this Saturday’s deadline arrives.

Demichelis followed by Evra. Zabaleta is not a good pick I'm not sure why people insist he is. Gets a yellow card pretty much every other game which screws up his bap chances.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Next season's bargain defenders

This season West Brom and Stoke defenders and goalkeepers were overpriced after doing well in the previous season.

Next season it is obvious that Everton, in particular Coleman, as well as Chelsea defenders will face a hike or remain high.

But where will the bargains lie? Which defenders and goalkeepers from major teams will be kindly priced? Which teams will be a great source of value defensive points next season?

The promoted sides will be obvious contenders. But which of this season's current crop will become the bargains of 2014/15?

I think without the pressure of Europa League, Swansea could return to being a cost-effective source of defensive points. Assuming they stay up, West Brom have the players to provide clean sheets (and some goals) - they possibly need a different manager...

Hopefully Palace defenders come in at 5.0 rather than 5.5. No idea about promoted teams but I think Stoke might be a decent option as they've looked much improved this season and with Huth back etc it may make a big difference.

Spurs could be value as well if they get a decent manager.

      Leicester and Burnley defence worth a look. For me the Bargain Basement players to choose, much will depend on;

      1/ Pricing
2/ Transfers and how they will affect those we already know about.
3/ Fixtures for the cheaper teams.

Trippier at Burnley will hopefully be low priced. There will always be bargains at top clubs that step out of the shadow, Azpi?

But Trippier is the first name on my team sheet next year, lets hope he is 4 million so he can count as a sub defender as well.

I think Rodgers will improve the Liverpool defence and they'll be good value.

Migs looks likely to stay at 5.5 or even drop to 5.0, while Brendan seems to be determined to make his Sakho purchase pay off and he could be good value.

But we haven't been playing the same way. Where there was once Lucas there is now Gerrard, Henderson moved central. SSSC with Gerrard and Henderson behind leaves little protection bar the goals they score.

Next season's bargain defenders and goalkeepers will initially come mainly from the newly promoted teams, but I hope that Vito Mannnone's price does not increase too much.

Beyond that it depends too much on initial prices, new signings, unexpected improvements and injuries to make specific forecasts now, but don't expect to find any initial bargains in the major teams unless they are players transferred in from lesser teams after the prices have been announced (as Mignolet was this season).

      * Is there going to be a Scoutcast today? If there is, my question will be about which midfielders who have been playing out of position might be reclassified as defenders or forwards next season, and which out of position defenders and forwards might be reclassified as midfielders. (The major reclassifications for the current season were Coleman and Mirallas).

What a terrible buy he was - missed the second match of the last DGW through suspension (my fault for not looking at the tightrope) and then loses his place. Scoring me a grand total of 1 point (and most likely costing me a -4). This game... 😉

Prob start two chelsea, but just because I think they'll get more points. As we won't get a CS against UTD and coin flip whether we do vs West Brom. On the flipside Vergini will def play both games, no chance from Bardlsey coming back in considering how we'v played last few gaems.

I have to sell one of Ramsey and riksen to get Yaya. Currently I'm thinking to sell Eriksen, Also, Allardyce made some comments early this week that WHM needed to tighten at the back and get some CS again.

A lof of ifs here but say RVP stays at United next season, what price do you think he will start the season at?

He still has a decent goal to game ratio this season and if he can stay injury free then surely he is a no brainer at 11-12 million?

Who would be in your premiership all time XI. You can pick anyone you want and any formation you want.

    Schmeichel

    Neville Ferdinand Vidic A. Cole

    ------Viera Yaya ------

    Ronaldo Mata Bale

    ---------Henry---------

Didn't want G.Neville in my team but don't really recall any outstanding RB. Loads of players I would have liked but opted for these ones as I think they would work best together.

Dennis Irwin played left back if I remember correctly and was an excellent player.

Was torn between Keane, Scholes and Yaya but went with Yaya as Scholes can't tackle and I think Yaya has more to his game and gets booked less.

Wouldn't play Giggs in the hole behind the striker and from what I have seen Mata plays that position best. Other contender was Silva but went for Mata because he is more direct and you can probably see there is a lot of speed and directness in my 3 attacking midfielders.

You don't have to agree with my team and this was more meant for people to post their top XI

After Aguero's blank last week I am now more tempted to captain him this week as I know not many will in my ML. All my rivals captained him last week so captaining him this week could be a good differential. I know I've previously said he has been playing as if he is worried about the WC and doesn't want to get injured again but I was just talking to a City fan who was saying he always takes a few games to get back up to speed after returning from injury. City have definitely eased him in terms of mpg so maybe he will be ready to explode this DGW?

I was sure I was going to captain Rooney at the start of the week but I am starting to sway towards Aguero now.

Is everyone else sticking with Rooney?

RVP being back doesn't bother me that much if I'm honest as I don't think he will get enough mins to make that much of a difference but the Silva factor is definitely a huge plus.

This was posted last night mate and can be seen in the list of topics.

As we know, RvP may be returning from injury, so, how will this effect Rooney's points?

Rooney WITH RvP: 6.2 Points per game (93 in 15)
Rooney WITHOUT RvP: 7.4 Points per game (96 in 13)

Further to this, Silva may be returning from injury, so how will this effect Yaya Toure's points?

YYT WITH Silva&Aguero: 6.9 Points per game (69 in 10)
YYT WITHOUT Silva (with Aguero): 7.57 Points per game (53 in 7)
YYT Without Aguero (with Silva): 6.9 points (76 in 11)

Aguero is the third captaincy option, So:

Aguero WITHOUT Silva: 6.48 Points per Game (45 in 7)
Aguero WITH Silva: 8.7 Points per game (87 in 10)

          In conclusion - Tldr;
If you expect no RvP & No Silva = Rooney (c)
If you expect RvP & No Silva = YYT (c)
If you expect No RvP & Silva = Aguero (c)
If you expect RvP & Silva = Aguero (c)

Has this changed your mind on who you will captain? Interested to know! Hopefully it makes sense...

            Thanks for this 🙂

Didn't see it and its a great bit of work from whoever posted it originally.

The thing that makes it still a bit confusing is that I don't think RVP will play enough mins but there isn't much in Rooney's PPG with or without him tbh but with Aguero I don't think Silva will play the 2nd game in the DWG and there is a bit of a difference there.

At the moment its still Rooney (C) and Aguero (VC) for me but this may very well change come Friday night when I make my final decision.

So you would definitely go for Yaya over Aguero?

All three are on my radar and it is a tough choice. At the moment I would go for Yaya over Aguero as his recent form has been far better but this may change when I hear the press conference.

If I know Silva plays then I would probably put AGuero ahead of Yaya as he helps Aguero and hinders Yaya.

Rooney is my top choice though as I know he will play and they have the best fixtures. The only downside is RVP could impact on his points.

Also see below as IRISH MADRIDISTA makes a good point about Hernandez getting mins will definitely mean Rooney dropping deeper.

The more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards Aguero - he's due a big points haul 😉

There is a large amount of luck involved and no matter how much planning and calculating we do, we cannot ensure success, only increase our chances of it. 😉

I'm currently on Yaya, think he's bound to continue his form.

RVP back deters me enough from Rooney and Kun hasn't proven himself to be the explosive Kun we all know... yet. He has tough enough fixtures too whereas Yaya could bang in a goal or two no matter how tight the game.

In regards to tough fixtures I think Everton will be just as tight as the Sunderland game for Man U. In both cases the other fixture should make up for it but I can see Man City putting more past Villa than Man U v Hull - obviously this is just my opinion.

Yaya is by no means a bad shout as he does very well against the lesser teams so I think this week all 3 are great shouts. It's definitely the hardest captain choice I've had to make this season lol

For all we know they could all score well and it might be irrelevant who we captain out of those 3 🙂

          I completely agree.
Villa will also be fighting for their PL lives but they're not as solid as Hull and Man City are better than United imo..

Yep, I fully expect all 3 to do well! I'm not going to go with Rooney though simply as we don't know enough about Giggs' United and RVP is back now.. Rooney could play deeper. I also suspect Hernandez could get a game..

Yaya vs Kun then.. I really don't know, its so tough to call, but both will do well..

I might just end up joining you, I started off as Kun(C), then swapped to Rooney, now I'm on Yaya, but I have a feeling I'm not far away from going full circle and just ending up with Aguero (C), he's a fun and exciting (C) to have 😉

I'm feeling good about it now lol but that could change come Friday night/Monday morning.

I just hope all my rivals have lost faith in him after he blanked last week and captain Rooney this week and he only gets a goal or something.

I'm only leading my ML by 10 points so this needs to pay off!

    Mannone
    Azpi Alonso Ivan
    Nasri Yaya Ramsey Eriksen
    Suarez Rooney(c) Kun
    (Davis Punch Bruce Olsson)

Took a -4 to get this and have 1.0 left in the bank. Ideally I would really like to have Mata in but it's going to mean an additional -8 (-12 overall)?

Would have to do something along the lines of Eriksen & Ivan > Mata & 4.6 defender

Baines will play and I would ship out Coleman for Demi if you want to keep one of them. I did Coleman>Demi earlier in the week and I'm thinking of doing Baines>Terry as I think he will outscore him in the last 2 GW's and it allows me to upgrade my keeper to DDG

Atletico are not going to make it easy for us at all and Simeone will have them play it as if it's a world cup final.

I've never been one to follow my gut feeling, but I've just shifted the armband from Rooney to Aguero. I just have the feeling that he will outscore him. I know he has limited game time but I just think he'll have the bit between his teeth and will terrorise Villa.

    Am I an idiot? :-p

That surprises me. I thought he was looking really good, especially against WBA. But even against palace, when he blanked, he was still looking sharp and making all the right movements.

I wasn't impressed with him in the last match and he was out wide left far too often and not in and around the box as much as he should have been.

If Silva is back this will improve his scoring potential though and he should be playing more centrally.
