World Cup 2014

World Cup 2014 – Team Analysis – Spain

The final team in our analysis of Group B is the defending champions, Spain. Vicente del Bosque’s men get their campaign underway with a repeat of the 2010 World Cup Final against Holland on Friday June 13 at 8pm, before squaring up to Mexico five days later at 8pm and then facing the rank outsiders, Australia, on Monday June 23 at 5pm:

Road to Qualification

The Spanish topped a five-team group including France, Finland, Georgia and Belarus after winning six and drawing two of their eight fixtures. Defensively-sound, they registered five clean sheets and conceded just three goals, though they were relatively unimpressive at the other end of the pitch – scoring just 14 times, they netted more than twice on just one occasion, with a 4-0 win over Belarus.

Most Starts Sergio Ramos (8), Xavi, Sergio Busquets (7), Andres Iniesta, Pedro, Alvaro Arbeloa (6), Iker Casillas, Jordi Alba, Gerard Pique, David Silva, Cesc Fabregas (5)

Most Goals Pedro (4), Alvaro Negredo (3), Sergio Ramos, Jordi Alba (2)

Most Assists Cesc Fabregas (3), David Silva, Pedro (2)

The Key Targets

Recent friendly matches suggest Del Bosque’s side are struggling to rediscover their rhythm ahead of next month’s tournament. A narrow 2-1 win over Equatorial Guinea was followed by defeat to South Africa before the Spaniards edged past Italy 1-0 in Diego Costa’s first appearance up front. Last year’s 3-0 Confederations Cup Final defeat at the hands of Brazil perhaps hinted that some of Del Bosque’s ageing squad could struggle in the conditions but the manager is likely to stay true to his tried and trusted regulars.

At the back, Spain don’t have their problems to seek. Iker Casillas played just two league games for Real Madrid all season and has had to rely on cup competitions for minutes – he is available for 6.2 inFantasyiTeam. Alvaro Arbeloa is now retired, with Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta likely to take over the right-back berth, whilst Barcelona pair Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba (both priced at 6.4 in FantasyiTeam) have been blighted by injury and made just 26 and 14 starts in La Liga last season respectively. Azpilicueta should benefit from a lower price across the Fantasy games and is available for 5.9 inFantasyiTeam, though Alba, along with Sergio Ramos, netted twice during the qualifiers and carries a real threat down the left. Ramos arrives in fine form, having scored six times for Real Madrid this season, and costs 6.3 of your FantasyiTeam budget.

In the centre, Sergio Busquets offers little in the way of going forward and his appeal is limited to those games which reward defensive contributions. Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Alonso will surely continue as mainstays in Del Bosque’s XI; the former two are similarly-priced in FantasyiTeam at 7.4 and 7.6 respectively, with the Real Madrid man setting you back 6.0. Up top, Diego Costa – providing he can fully recover from a hamstring complaint – is the in-form forward at Spain’s disposal, having notched 27 times in La Liga for Atletico Madrid; his recent form is reflected in his price, though, with Costa setting you back 9.9 in FantasyiTeam.

The Long Shots

Top scorer in qualification with four goals and a pair of assists, Pedro started all but one of the last seven group games. The Barcelona star notched 15 times in the recent league campaign and could remain under the radar as many opt for Costa instead – certainly, he’s kinder on the budget at 8.7 in FantasyiTeam.

Both Cesc Fabregas and David Silva (7.2 and 7.5 in FantasyiTeam) started five of the qualifiers and produced three and two assists respectively. Neither are nailed-on in the first XI, though there’s every chance the former could operate as a “false nine” if Costa’s injury problems re-surface – the City man looks more of a punt but could still prove a canny acquisition off the bench if Del Bosque’s team are struggling to break down opponents.

I'm happy at Roma but at 27 I need to reflect regarding the big offers of clubs that any player dreams of: Barcelona, Bayern, Manchester City."

The things that the close season makes us do!

I have been playing Championship Manager 01/02 (available as freeware)

Playing as Wrexham when they were in League 1. Targeting young players "before they were famous". So far signed Rooney, Shorey, Britton, Joe Cole, Carrick, Defoe and Boyce!

Rooney (classed as a FR for some reason) is banging in goals for fun as a 16 year old. I reckon the big clubs will come knocking soon.

    My latest Telegraph WC team

    Akinfeev
    Zabaleta Luiz Ramos Schar
Di Maria Pjanic Oscar Rakitic Okazaki
    Neymar

40 transfers to use throughout the tournament.

Planning to rotate the striker through the group stage, targeting top players against lesser sides.

Will probably also switch Oscar / Di Maria after their first two games to Robben / Muller for their last two games.

They might as well give me the mini league money now really.

Within each league there is only one of every real life player
Players are allocated prices by computer which fluctuate by demand for that player
It runs all year round-tomorrow is the transition of seasons-so everyone entering will get a new team tomorrow allocated by computer then you buy/sell/trade
Supported by scores in real life from who scored.com
Sounds weird but gets away from identikit teams
As I say you're welcome to build your squad in zombie period up to start of real life season
      Any questions please ask

Hi folks - since these threads have generally turned into into discussions of FiT and Telegraph lineups, I was wondering if anyone wanted to offer some advice/input on the fantasy league I find myself going into for this Cup. I think I know a lot about football (caveat: for an American) but I've never done a serious fantasy Cup league.

There are eight of us in a snake draft format - I pick 8th in the first round, 1st in the second, and so on - for 18 rounds, thus 144 players deep. While there are waivers and trades before the Cup starts, there are NO transactions during the Cup, so a big part of the strategy is figuring out what teams are going to do well and go deep into the tournament.

The only major roster caveat is we draft team keepers versus individuals, and scoring-wise, offensive statistics such as goals, assists, etc., are "prorated" across positions - so defenders get the most points for them, forwards the least, and midfielders obviously in the middle. Defenders get some credit for clean sheets, wins, etc., but less than goalies.

So, any help anyone wants to provide would be great! Players to get, players to avoid, sleepers, etc., would all be wonderful. The articles on this site have been useful but I could always use more suggestions. Thanks!

You'll always want a big hitter in the first round.

So you'd assume the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar etc. will be the ones to go first, so i'd select the second rate players that may still outscore their teammates, players like Higuain, Muller, Oscar are always overshadowed by the heavier hitters.

Pick your heavy hitting strikers and midfielders first then defenders and second rate attackers.

Don't underestimate the importance of a solid defence either, in short competitions like this the Spanish, Germany & Argentinian defence always score highly.

The best thing about defence is that even if you don't get the best option, there's still 4 options left if you include the keeper that will score about the same. So make sure you know the starting defence for the big sides.

Yeah, it's interesting. Generally, keepers and defense have been the "safer picks" so they tend to go first, but I'm not sure how it will be with such a wide-open Cup this year. They've tried to tweak the scoring to make them less valuable - in 2010, 4 of the top 8 scoring slots were GKs, and 3 of the top 10 were D. Of course, guys like Sneijder, Villa, Forlan were top 5 scorers - and the person who hit on Forlan late, of course, won. When they did the same for Euros in 2012, the Spanish defense was so good that 4 of the top 6 scorers were their keepers and three defenders (Ozil was the top outfield player). I'll note that they've tried to tweak the scoring a bit to lower the keepers, in particular, but also the defenders as well.

Based on the history of how well keepers have done, I would expect that the "projected semi-finalists" of Spain, Germany, Brazil and Argentina will probably all have their keepers taken before it gets to me. My thinking would be a top outfield player - Neymar, perhaps - and then a defender from a different side with the potential to score well (like Alba, perhaps).

Sure. http://mendhamgoldenballs.weebly.com/scoring-system.html is for this year. http://mendhamgoldenballs.weebly.com/scoring-system1.html is the scoring system they used for Euros (and I think WC 2010). The major changes is two fewer points for clean sheets and accordingly, one more for a win (and taking away points for a loss) - I think the goal being to have the keepers on a more even plane, if not necessarily to lower their particular scoring. I'm new at this (I'm technically "co-managing") so I haven't had any input into the scoring ot setup.

Looking at the points scoring i'd be all over big hitting defenders and midfielders, particularly full-backs with attacking potential like Dani Alves & Jordi Alba. Midfielders playing in an advanced role like Muller and Robben are also likely to be profitable, seems like drafting forwards last might be the best option. Love the trophy by the way 😆

Yeah, I think that's probably not a bad strategy to have - as absurd as it sounds, taking Alba and Alves with the first two picks would probably set me up pretty well to not finish last, whereas I believe someone took Messi first in 2010 and that went SO well for him. I probably have a decent handle on strategy, at least early. Any thoughts on sleepers?

(There is historical data and scoring, etc., if you're curious. My friend who runs it even went over the top and did a Euro 2012 draft review. And yes, the trophy is hilarious, and it's been in my friend's apartment for four years and I honestly think his GF is rooting against him so it's not in their living room anymore.)

Don't think they'll be too many sleepers about mate.

Argentinian & Belgian defence may be underrated, same with the likes of Fred(Bra), de Bruyne(Bel), Pedro(Spa), Insigne(Ita).

I'd still try and get a decent attacker like Ribery/Aguero/Muller then get Alba & co.

FYI, I plugged in the revised scoring system to the spreadsheet and the results are not hugely different, but there are some changes. In 2010, 4 of the top 8 scorers were keepers - with the revised system, 2 of the top 3 are (Spain and Germany, Sneijder was #1 overall) - but there were no other GKs in the top 10. For Euro 2012, rather than 4 of the top 6 being Spain GK and Spanish defenders - they were still rated highly (top 2 scorers) but the others dropped to 8 and 9, with 3-7 being attacking players (other than than the English keepers).

TL;DR - GK and D are still safe and potentially extremely high scoring, especially if you ride the winning squad, but their point potential is dampened and the above average ones are no longer great picks. it will change my draft strategy just a bit.

Such an enormous ask winning on another one of the Dominant footballing continents. Only Brazil have ever done it, and even then Sweden managed to get runners up on their home soil. The USA, Japan/S Korea, S Africa tournaments have clouded the issue a bit but the point remains as strong as ever...Brazil or Argentina for me.....

Leicester and Palace keeper rotation? Seems a little odd to me. I understand Palace, although I have always felt that the value lies with Pulis' CB's rather than keepers. But Leicester? I thought we all agreed never to punt on a championship club between the sticks. The risk is great with a defender but that is mitigated by the bench option to a far greater degree

Dann interests me for the right price. I just feel that unless Palace get Ruddy their keeper will be 4.5 whilst their defenders will be 5.0

So, thinking of signing up for the members stuff. Got a few questions about the RMT tool.

How accurate do you think its is? Obviously its about aproximations and projections but do you actually find it useful? Is it accurate enough to have merit?

Have you ever relied on it for a decision and its cost you badly?

Have you ever relied on it for a decision and its come up trumps?

It's more of a long term tool. Won't be useful for single gameweeks really, unless you use it as a tie breaker when you can't choose between 2 players.

I didn't take any notice of it, but that's because I go solely on my own judgment and choose my own players every time.

        ^This

Long term its pretty darn too close to the bone. That said it hasnt quite got some of the match up stats bang on yet. "what players had for breakfast" hasnt yet been programmed in so it cant work out when Ruddy has had weetabix and such the CS is incoming.

You also have to remember that the predicted scores are about half what you actually expect.

It can never accurately predict when any player might actually come up with the goods...but safe to say if it reads that you have a GW score of a predicted 55 pts then you have a strong team..anything below 50 pts and you probably need to act...

Yeah you should...very often you can see a run of predicted scores that read

          54.2 57.1 53.3 47.2 45.1 46.0

That would be a sure indication that one or two of the good picks in your squad are coming into a tough run...make a couple of fictitious transfers and it will even it up, if they are the right picks of course. You still have to hope they do it on the day though

Sell it to me god damn it! 🙂

Does it factor in injuries to other players in the squad for example - in terms of both changes to the number of minutes a player will play as a result (for example, Coutinho being injured makes Sterling a MUCH better pick) and how well the team itself does?
